Android app news: Samsung Smart TV app launched

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 09:20 AM PDT

Great companion app, but you'll need a Galaxy S II to make it work.

Samsung has launched a great little mobile companion for its butt-kicking range of Smart TVs that will allow users to transfer footage between their TV sets and their Samsung Android handset

The Samsung Smart View app, which sadly is only available for the Samsung Galaxy S II (with other Samsung devices like the Galaxy Tab to follow) let's viewers send content over Wi-Fi from the Smart TV to the phone.

It doesn't matter whether you're streaming content from the internet, watching a Blu-ray, good old regular TV or even footage from their camcorder; it can all be sent to the Galaxy SII.

The transfer needs to take place over the same Wi-Fi Network, so it's perfect if you want to carry on watching when you're in another room.

So next time your bowels go during an Andy Murray 5-setter at Wimbledon you won't have to miss the moment when he inevitably limps out with a double fault.

While the Samsung press release claims you can watch on the 'device of your choice' that's not really the case is it? This is a great little app and it would be nice to see Samsung loosen-up and make it available to all of the Android community.

After all, isn't the idea to encourage more people to buy the excellent Samsung Smart TVs rather than make existing Smart TV owners buy Samsung Phones?

iPhone 5 release date leaked as September with A5 chip

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 07:42 AM PDT

New reports have suggested the Apple iPhone 5 will launch in September with the A5 dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera

Apple is to officially release the iPhone 5 in September with the same A5 dual-core processor found in the iPad 2, a new report from Bloomberg has claimed.

Contradicting claims from yesterday which suggested the mooted iPhone 5 would touch down in August with a radically redesigned form factor, the Bloomberg report suggests the next-generation Apple blower will land in September as the company’s first dual-core smartphone.

Citing “two people familiar with the plans,” the latest reports claim the iPhone 5 will boost its hardware credentials with the 1GHz dual-core processor from the iPad 2 and an 8-megapixel camera that would see the device challenge the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S II handset.

Set to run the recently unveiled iOS 5, the iPhone 5 is the most eagerly awaited smartphone set to hit the market with the undisclosed sources also reporting that Apple is also “testing a new version of the iPad that has a higher resolution screen, similar to the one now used in the iPhone 4.”

When will Apple finally end the seemingly endless rumours and launch the iPhone 5? August? September? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 and iPad 3 releases remain off limits to Samsung

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 03:55 AM PDT

A US judge has refused Samsung access to Apple's unreleased iPhone 5 and iPad 3 devices as part of an ongoing court battle

Samsung has been refused access to unreleased iPhone 5 and iPad 3 prototypes after a US judge ruled the Korean company had no legal right to see Apple’s upcoming products.

Having ‘demanded’ access to Apple’s unreleased tech after the Cupertino firm was granted access by a US court to view unleashed Samsung devices as part of an ongoing legal patent row, Samsung has been refused a viewing with the mooted devices in order to check if Apple has infringed on its patents.

Despite refusing Samsung access to the Apple devices, Judge Lucy Koh has announced the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1 maker will still be able to use the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 in its legal dispute once the device are released to the public.

"Samsung is free to argue, for instance, that there is little likelihood of confusion because consumers will not encounter its products side-by-side with the iPhone 4 or iPad 2, but rather with Apple's next generation iPhone and iPad,” Koh announced.

"Similarly, as to proximity, Samsung is free to argue that because the iPhone 4 and iPhone 2 will soon be outmoded and reduced in price, they are not being sold (or very soon will not be sold) to the same class of purchasers who are likely to buy new Samsung products.

"By choosing to allege infringement only of its current products, Apple opens itself up to these arguments."

Whilst confirmed release dates for the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are being kept the industry’s most well kept secrets, last reports suggest the iPhone 5 will be officially unveiled and released this August sporting an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities, a 1GHz dual-core processor and a radically redesigned form factor.

Apple Time Capsule: 3TB model revealed

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Wireless back-up device gets upgrade after two years.

Apple has lifted the lid on a new 3TB version of its back-up focused Time Capsule. The new top-of-the-range hard drive will set you back a whacking £399, but will let you wirelessly save all your documents seamlessly.

The 2TB model is now £249, with the old-school 1TB model being discontinued. Clearly Apple reckons that users are stashing stacks more data these days, hence the more capacious disk space.

The Time Capsule works in conjunction with Mac OS X’s Time Machine feature, automatically storing copies of documents, projects and media files so there’s always an up-to-date back-up available.

Will you be snagging a 3TB Time Capsule? Or don’t you fancy that hefty price tag? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nintendo Wii U controller was nearly a standalone handheld

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 02:56 AM PDT

The Wii U could have been a handheld games machine sans console, says Nintendo's Satoru Iwata...

Nintendo’s Wii U could have turned out a lot different to how it looks today, claims Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata. Chatting to Gamasutra, the gaming boss said that round table discussions could have seen the machine turn into a standalone handheld console, without the need for a set-top machine.

"During the roundtable discussions there were such arguments about should we make it capable of being a standalone system or should we make it work only with the [base console] system," said Iwata. He also claimed that this standalone handheld may have linked to a separate, small LCD display that could be stood on a coffee table.

"Considering how expensive screens were then, it did not make sense to have this big-sized LCD,” Iwata claimed.

Things changed, though, when the Nintendo consensus "came to the conclusion that this controller is only going to show the images generated and processed by this hardware unit [console] - and sent from the hardware unit wirelessly. That means sharper graphics. A battery [-powered controller] couldn't do that."

This change of heart is obviously a necessary one, but for more than one reason: If the Wii U controller were a standalone machine it would undoubtedly eat into already-slow 3DS sales.

Is the Wii U the sequel you were hoping for? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

PSN: Sony now 'hyper vigilant' says boss

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 02:17 AM PDT

Interview comes as former Anonymous member held by police.

Sony is now “hyper vigilant” about its security following April’s major hack on the PlayStation Network. That’s according to SCEE boss Andrew House, who told CVG that the company was being more stringent about looking after user’s data.

“[It’s] a responsibility we now take even more seriously than we did before. We'll try our absolute best to try and make our system as secure as we possibly can,” said House in a video interview with the gaming site.

Sony is not the only gaming giant to suffer at the hands of hackers, with Sega attacked last week. House added that Sony was, “…genuinely humbled and extremely grateful to those consumers who have continued to put their trust in us.”

Are you still using PSN? Or has Sony’s response to the crisis meant you’ve switched to allegiance to the Xbox 360? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

OS X Lion could require Snow Leopard for clean install

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 01:13 AM PDT

Lion will not be released in physical form, raising questions about clean install.

OS X Lion may require Apple’s Snow Leopard software in order for it to be clean installed when users want to put the forthcoming operating system onto a new hard drive. The suggestion comes from an email sent by Cupertino chief Steve Jobs.

Jobs was answering a missive from a MacRumors reader, which said, “I'm really exited [sic]about Lion, but I'm a bit anxious about the absence of any physical media in the event of a crash where I need to do a clean install. Will Lion still provide a way to make a bootable image in the event that I need to start from scratch?”

In a one line reply, Jobs said, “You can clean install Snow Leopaard [sic] first.” Lion is only being made available on the Mac App Store, with Apple eschewing physical media for its new OS release.

The new OS is set to hit virtual shelves in July, costing £20.99. Just make sure that you have a copy of Snow Leopard to hand in case the unthinkable happens and you do need to perform a clean install.

HTC Puccini tablet set for 27 June

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 11:45 PM PDT

Is HTC about to unleash Euro version of Android Honeycomb tablet?

HTC’s much-rumoured Android Honeycomb tablet, dubbed the Puccini, has been pegged for a 27 June announcement. The Taiwanese tech titan is set to hold a special event in London on that date.

With the phone maker already releasing a stack of new phones in 2011, the Puccini appears to be the safest bet when it comes to new HTC kit. A 4G version of the tab is already being primed for release in the US.

The Puccini is said to come with a 1GHz dual-core processor, 10-inch panel and the latest Google software. HTC’s current 7-inch tablet, the Flyer, only comes with Gingerbread under the hood.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more on this as we get it. Stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for all the latest.

Nokia Windows Phone coming 26 October?

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 11:15 PM PDT

Espoo confirms dates for London-based gathering.

Nokia’s first Windows Phone looks set to be unveiled on 26 October. Why? Because that’s the opening date for the mobile maker’s annual Nokia World event, which has just been officially confirmed.

As in 2010, the bash will be taking place at London’s ExCeL centre, with a keynote speech set for 9am on the opening day. The gathering will continue until 27 October, taking in developer workshops and meetings.

Last year saw Stephen Elop make his first appearance as Nokia CEO. This year he’s likely to show off the first Nokia Windows Phones, which Espoo has already said will be outed in the fourth quarter of this year. Just this week Elop said he remained “confident” at least one Microsoft-backed Nokia device would be on shelves in 2011.
