News@8pm: Facebook iPad and Apple's social network

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

LA Noire: Rockstar games has unveiled the trailer for the forthcoming ‘The Nicholson Electroplating case’ DLC pack which will explain the explosion in Los Angles. It follows just weeks after LA Noire’s initial release and will help keep the game dominating the charts. Its close competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops has had its own ‘annihilation’ DLC pack leaked. Coming first to Xbox live users and then to PC and PS3 gamers.

Facebook has indicated that it will finally release its official iPad application. Massively spearheaded by facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and after 12months of development, this will easily become a must-have app.  40-year-old Joanne Fraill has been jailed for 8months for ‘contempt of the court’ having befriended a defendant on the social-networking site while on jury duty.

More features are being revealed about Apple’s iOS5 and the latest rumour is of an iOS-exclusive social network allowing users to meet new compatible ‘buddies’ in their vicinity. Angry Birds developer Rovio has officially launched the latest ‘Mine and Dine’ update adding 15 new levels to its original app in the latest expansion.

The man behind legendary titles Doom and Quake and the forthcoming Rage has revealed the PS4 and Xbox 720 are only a few years from release and could be up to ten times more powerful than their predecessors. The online teaser for the forthcoming Sony's S1 and S2 next-generation Android tablets, ahead of their September 2011 release date certainly whetting the appetite.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 handset to hit the UK in Q4

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 08:46 AM PDT

Nokia to launch its Windows Phone 7 handsets in the UK later this year, alongside Microsoft's Mango OS update

The first Nokia handsets to run Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system are to launch in the UK later this year with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop confirming the handsets will land in Q4.

Following on from the announcement earlier this year that Nokia had partnered with Microsoft to be the primary supplier of Windows Phone 7 handsets in an attempt to turn round its dwindling market share and poor smartphone showing Elop has confirmed that six European markets will launch the device this year.

Forgoing to big US launch to kick off its Windows Phone 7 debut, Nokia has revealed that despite omitting its native Finland, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Holland and Italy will all see networks stock its devices before the year’s end.

Microsoft officially detailed the upcoming Mango update to its Windows Phone 7 platform last month with hundreds of new features set to hit the fledgling OS in September, a release that is to be quickly followed by Nokia’s handsets.

Will the company’s partnership with Microsoft and Windows Phone 7 save Nokia from its slippery slope or is it all to late for the Finnish phone manufacturer? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The BBC announces it will launch a news app that will provide Samsung Smart TV owners with on-demand services and news bulletins

The BBC has announced that it will launch a News application for Samsung Smart TVs with other platforms set to follow.

The BBC News app offers owners of Samsung's mighty-fine connected sets an on-demand, 20-25 minute bulletin, which the Corporation claims will be just like the ones shown on BBC One.

The application was built using HTML meaning that any other connected TV platform can adopt the BBC News creation, but Samsung is the official first partner.

Samsung already has video apps from the BBC iPlayer and the movie-streaming LOVEFiLM player, so the BBC News on-demand channel fits nicely within that portfolio.

Samsung has also now shipped 2 million of its Smart TVs and app downloads across the globe while the BBC says that the tablet that is becoming the second TV in many homes in the UK.

iOS 5 features Apple's iOS exclusive social network?

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 07:09 AM PDT

Apple patent outs company's plan for an iOS social network to challenge Twitter and Facebook

A newly emerged Apple patent has revealed the company’s plans to launch a new social network exclusively available to users of an iOS touting device.

Described by Apple in its patent filing as “ad hoc networking based on content and location,” the iOS based service, if brought to devices in an update of the mobile operating system, would allow users to meet new compatible ‘buddies’ in their vicinity as handsets communicate wirelessly.

With Apple revealing it is to fully integrate Twitter in iOS 5 when it launches later this year, the new patent filing shows that the Cupertino firm could soon be set to offer its own social offering with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users all able to meet and communicate with fellow iOS users either at their current location or in regions they have recently visited.

Not just for existing friendships the patented Apple network will see users remotely paired with other iOS users based on music preferences, video plays, pictures snapped, websites visited and applications they have downloaded.

Would Apple’s planned social service improved relationships with new people or be a massive unwanted invasion of privacy? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News: Holy iPads, toilet tech and massive Tetris

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 06:30 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days

Holy iPad!

We’re not sure on God Almighty’s feelings towards Apple. Each has its own following with similar levels of loyalty and devotedness, so are they rivals? Not according to ‘Father Gadget’, who has his iPad handy at all times to help spread the word of God. Religion? There’s an app for that…

SEGA’s hopes go down the toilet
Mad Japanese thing of the week: SEGA Toylets. Rather than entering back into the console frey, SEGA’s been busy building games machines designed to sit in the base of urinals. The aim? To help you aim, of course. The device is shoved into pub toilets and reads your, erm, ‘accuracy’.

Duke Nukem Never
You’re promoting a game that’s been 15 years in the making, and suddenly scores of poor reviews start hitting the media. What do you do? Act out of ‘pure emotion’ and have a Twitter hissy-fit, of course. …And then immediately get sacked for your bizarre lack of professionalism.

Unfortunately not
The guidebook for Apple Store employees has been leaked, and contains an unsurprising level of psychological manipulation. Apparently, store staff members aren’t allowed to say ‘Unfortunately’. ‘As it turns out’ is more appropriate. As in: ‘As it turns out, your iPhone isn’t compatible with this version of iOS.’ They’re also not allowed to correct people’s mispronunciation of Apple kit as it’s deemed patronising. But then, if you pronounce ‘iPod’ wrong, you probably deserve to be spoken down to.

The $1.2million iPad
Whenever Apple brings out something new, a ridiculous Stuart Hughes bling-encrusted version is never too far behind. This time it’s the iPad 2, which has been swathed in gold and encrusted with diamonds. Price to you? A mere £731,172. That’s a bargain, if you ask us, although the gold may, ‘as it turns out’, make Apple’s claims that the iPad 2 is significantly lighter than its predecessor slightly redundant.

Tetris: The enormous edition
When Tetris landed on the original Game Boy it did so on a tiny grey-scale display with meagre 8-bit graphics. Fast-forward twenty-odd years and you’ll be able to find it on TV’s around the 50-inch mark packing vivid colour and more tech than the ship that took a man to the moon. In other words: Samsung’s Smart TVs have landed, and the selling point is currently a game from the late 1980s.

Popular thing is popular
Last week Google unveiled one of its most innovative and successful ever logo doodles. The Les Paul inspired playable guitar strings were an instant hit. When it was removed the next day a collective moan went out so large that Google was forced to find a permanent home for it. That’s people-power for you. Or, more specifically, people-moaning-about-an-irreverent-noise-machine-power.

And finally…

Sony goes cinematic

How would you launch an iPad rival? Obviously you’d make an incredibly cinematic video ad that in no way explains what the product is capable of. Launching two iPad rivals? Same rule applies:

Facebook iPad app official release date imminent

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 04:27 AM PDT

Facebook will release its official Apple iPad app in the next few weeks after 12 months in development

Facebook is set to finally launch an official Facebook application for Apple’s market dominating iPad tablet following more than 12 months of development, new reports have suggested. The news comes amid rumours Facebook is launching a HTML5 app store for Apple iPhones, codenamed Project Spartan.

With Mark Zuckerberg reportedly taking the helm in helping to develop his company’s Facebook for iPad application, the social networking powerhouse has apparently trialled a number of design iterations before deciding on the final layout which it is claimed will hit the App Store within weeks.

Whilst much of the functionality of Facebook’s full web service is available to iPad users through the Safari browser, the official Facebook for iPad app is said to completely revamp the service’s Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups services.

Remaining tight lipped and cagey on the existence and upcoming release of a Facebook iPad app, the company’s communications manager Jamie Schopflin announced: "We have a great relationship with Apple that is exemplified by our iPhone application, but with regards to an iPad application we have nothing to announce now, and cannot comment on future Facebook products.”

Would you favour an official Facebook for iPad application or are you satisfied with the fleet of existing imitations? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook juror jailed for 8 months for contempt of court

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 04:04 AM PDT

Juror Joan Fraill receives 8 month jail sentence for contacting defendant Jamie Stewart via social networking website Facebook, making it the first case of its kind in the UK

A woman juror who contacted a defendant during an active court case via the social networking site Facebook has been jailed for eight months for contempt of court.

In the first ruling of its kind, 40-year-old Joanne Fraill was handed the sentence after admitting to contacting defendant Jamie Sewart while sitting on the panel at her drugs trial, causing the £6million pound case to be thrown out.

"I hope it will act as a deterrent," Solicitor General Edward Garnier announced following the court’s decision to jail Fraill. "It's important that the integrity of our justice system and the integrity of our jury system is maintained and preserved and seen to be so."

During the course of the drug trial that took place last August, Fraill contacted and proceeded to exchange frequent messages with Sewart via the social media outlet. Discussing the jury's deliberations with Sewart, Fraill wrote: “Can’t get anywaone to go either no one budging pleeeeese dont’ say anyhting cause jamie they could call ammiss trial.”

In response Sewart said: “ha ha ur mad I really appreciate everthin.” Adding later: “Keep in touch and i’ll get you a nice pressie.”

The following morning, Sewart, of Bolton, confessed to her solicitor, leading to the judge halting the case. Lord Judge also found Sewart in contempt of court but gave her a two-year suspended sentence as she had already been separated from her daughter during the crown court trial.

Should Facebook and Twitter be off limits to jurors during ongoing trials? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

RIM to cut jobs after posting 12 per cent decline in Q1

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 03:08 AM PDT

BlackBerry maker to cut jobs following loss in revenue

Research in Motion the Canadian tech firm behind the BlackBerry brand has announced it is to slash jobs after it revealed its 2011 Q1 revenues had dropped 12 per cent on the previous quarter.

Announcing that the year had “gotten off to a challenging start,” RIM’s co-chief executive Jim Balsillie revealed that the company responsible for the BlackBerry PlayBook has made earnings in the region of $695 million for the year’s opening quarter from revenues of $4.9 billion despite reportedly strong sales of its first tablet device.

With Balsillie confirming that RIM’s downward spiral looks set to continue throughout the year’s second quarter the co-chief executive revealed that not only would the company be forced to reduce its headcount, BlackBerry products being primed for launch would be delayed until the “very late part of August.”

Despite reportedly shipping more than 500,000 of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablets during the opening quarter with sales set to increase further following the device’s UK launch yesterday, RIMs woes continued as sound specialist Dolby announced it is to sue the North American firm over unlicensed use of its technology.

Covering the use of Dolby Laboratories’ audio compression technologies in a series of BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook, the lawsuit has been filed in the US and Germany with RIM reportedly failing to acquire full licenses for the tech.

Will RIM and the BlackBerry brand recover from its latest stumble or is it on a downward spiral? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PS4 and Xbox 720 '10 times more powerful'

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 03:02 AM PDT

Developers will have to work even harder to make games stand out on next gen consoles.

The PS4 and Xbox 720 are just a couple of years away and could be up to ten times more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360. That’s according to John Carmack, the man behind legendary titles Doom and Quake and the forthcoming Rage.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Carmack said, “The next-generation will be here soon, a couple of years. It'll be another ten times as powerful as this generation. I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possibly do on there."

His comments come as chatter about the Xbox 720 reached new heights earlier this week, with Crysis 2 developer Crytek saying the hub would be outed at next year’s E3. Sony has already admitted that it’s started work on what will likely become PS4.

What do you make of Carmack’s comments? Will new consoles really be here so soon? Give us your tuppence worth on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Watch Sony's S1 and S2 Android tablet teaser

New online teaser shows Sony's S1 and S2 next-generation Android tablets, ahead of September 2011 release date

Sony’s finally starting to ramp up towards the launch of its S1 and S2 Android tablets. Just months after T3 posted pictures of the Sony S1 and S2 tablets, a new teaser vid has been released online, showing off the new slates in all their glory.

The clip, which you can check out below, is somewhat on the arty side, detailing the love affair between each model. It’s not your usual tech teaser trailer and is all the better for it if you ask us.

The Sony S1 and S2 have been pegged for release in September, going up for pre-order first in August. The S1 has a more conventional design, while the S2 is Sony’s unique clamshell effort. Each comes with Android Honeycomb on board.

LA Noire DLC trailer revealed

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 01:00 AM PDT

New case up for grabs from arson desk.

Rockstar has pulled the wrappers off of a new trailer for LA Noire’s first piece of downloadable content, the Nicholson Electroplating case. The clip, seen below, teases a new add-on which sees gamers try to find out just what caused a major explosion in the middle of Los Angeles.

In an accompanying blurb, Rockstar says, “Detectives Phelps and Biggs race to the site of the former Nicholson Electroplating plant to find a pile of unanswered questions. What caused the explosion? What were Nicholson's employees working on? And where are chief chemist Dr Harold McLellan and his mysterious female assistant?"

The DLC follows just weeks after LA Noire’s initial release and will doubtless help keep one of the year’s hottest games at the top of the charts. The new case can be snagged from 21 June from the game’s arson desk, for 360 MS points on Xbox 360, $3.99 from the PlayStation Store or free to those who have a Rockstar Pass.

Sony Ericsson Walkman W8 Android phone not hitting UK

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 11:39 PM PDT

Sony Ericsson announces its W8 Walkman phone will not launch in the UK, following in the footsteps of Motorola's Milestone 3 handset

More bad news for British mobile fanatics this morning, with the news that Sony Ericsson has killed off plans to launch its sleek, but basic W8 Walkman phone on UK shores. The news comes just a day after Motorola announced it  won't  be launching its Milestone 3 handset in Britain either.

In a statement, SE said, “We can confirm that the W8 Walkman phone will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The Walkman branding and the legacy from previous Walkman phones is very strong in these particular markets and therefore we decided to launch the phone in these markets.”

The W8 isn’t exactly stacked with next-gen features. There’s a low-res 320x480 screen, Android 2.1 and a 3.2 megapixel camera round the back. With better budget options up for grabs in the UK, including Samsung’s Galaxy Mini and the HTC Wildfire S, perhaps Sony Ericsson didn’t fancy its chances much here in Blighty.

Kinect for Windows SDK official

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 11:24 PM PDT

Microsoft releases non-commercial software development kit for Kinect which allows skeletal tracking and could revolutionise Windows 8

Microsoft has officially released a non-commercial software development kit for Kinect on Windows. The motion-sensing camera, currently only able to kick it fully on the Xbox 360, now looks set to become a key peripheral in the world of PCs.

The official announcement follows intense speculation about the SDK’s release. The new software allows developers to create apps for Windows 7 using the likes of skeletal tracking, advanced audio smarts and raw sensor streams in order to amp up Kinect’s depth sensor, colour sensor and microphone set-up.

Essentially, this means users could soon be able to use bodily movement to control everyday items on their PCs. That could be as simple as opening a menu or tinkering with a Powerpoint presentation.

The Big M says it’ll be releasing a commercial version “at a later date”. However, you can bet that even if that doesn’t land soon, Kinect will form a key part of the company’s forthcoming Windows 8 platform. Tell us what you think of Microsoft's plans now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
