Location-linked mobile apps soon, says Adobe

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 04:45 AM PDT

Apps to auto-suggest based on where users are

Adobe chief technology officer Kevin Lynch said the future of the smartphone would be location-based apps, and would notify users of relevant apps when they enter a particular area.

Speaking at the Open Mobile Summit, Lynch demonstrated the technology on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, where he showed how the real and virtual worlds could be linked, where smartphones and tablets could sense where the user is at the time.

The tablet sent a notification as if he was arriving at the Tate Modern, and offered an app for the museum with information about the paintings and exhibits. He was able to order food at the museum's café using the tablet and use it to browse movies in his hotel room.

"There's a strong future for us with this social- and location-based kind of computing enabled by mobile," Lynch said.

Lynch said the demo isn't far away from the capabilities of current technology, already available in Flash and AIR, and demonstrated a chess application running on Android, BlackBerry and iOS devices, with no changes made for each platform.

Launches galore! OSX Lion, iCloud, iOS5, PS Vita, Nintendo Wii U

News of the Week

Apple’s WWDC saw the launch of iOS 5, OS X Lion and the much speculated iCloud. The full specs of iCloud were revealed, including a feature that will let you upgrade your iTunes library to free and then share it across all your iOS devices. Apple also revealed its integration-heavy iOS 5 will hit the UK this autumn

A hell of a lot went down at E3 this week, one of the biggest stories being Sony Playstation’s unveiling of the PSVita. As well giving us a good look at the console and some of the upcoming game play, the full specs of the handheld were released, as well as the Vita’s price, and expected time of release – expect the Vita to be on the shelves for Christmas this year.

Nintendo launched their follow up to the Wii - the Wii U, at E3. The new console controller will come with a 6.2” touch screen, that will bring a new dimension to the gaming experience. Although controversially it was later revealed that game footage from the launch was actually taken from existing Xbox and PS3 games

There was plenty of other news for gamers as well, with CoD: Modern Warfare 3 revealing more game play video, showing missions on the streets of New York, Ghost Recon Future Soldier showing off some pretty impressive Kinect integration, and BioShock revealing the floating city of Columbia, the setting for the next release in the franchise – BioShock Infinite.

UK-based Codemasters latest to be hit by hackers

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 03:30 AM PDT

The latest in a string of hacker attacks is Codemasters.

Another gaming company has been hit by hackers, with UK-based Codemasters admitting to be attacked.

An email sent out by Codemasters has admitted to its customers that details have been compromised by hackers on June 3.

Personal data including user names, encrypted passwords, addresses, emails, names, order history and telephone numbers are believed to be stolen. Codemasters said that since no personal payment information was stored with Codemasters, credit card details were not at risk.

Codemasters stated in its open letter that as soon as the "unauthorised entry" was detected, the website was taken offline immediately.

It also said the website will remain offline for "the foreseeable future"; all traffic will be sent to its Facebook page, with a new website to be launched later this year.

The company has advised users to change passwords for other accounts that uses the same login information.

It said: "Unfortunately, Codemasters is the latest victim in on-going targeted attacks against numerous game companies. We assure you that we are doing everything within our legal means to track down the perpetrators and take action to the full extent of the law."

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART

iPhone app review: Super 8
With the stupendously-awesome-looking Super 8 movie set to rule the summer, the movie producers had a nifty idea of launching an app that turns your iPhone into a Super 8 camera. You can now create your own vintage movies with different lenses and filters and arrange the clips them how you wish.

Android app review: Scott Pilgrim
Fresh from the Scott Pilgrim movie, comes an Android app featuring the original comics. If you enjoyed the movie then this app is well worth checking out, but at £3.49, it's a little bit pricey. Scott Pilgrim for Android app review.

iPad app review: Keynote
Apple's iWork school of productivity apps has been knocking around on the iPad for a while. The launch for iPhone last week brought them back into the news. Here we have a Keynote for iPad review, which allows users to create presentations on the go. Sadly, it fails to live up to the excellent Mac app. Find out why in our review.

Angry Birds cookbook to land in bookstores near you

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 02:10 AM PDT

Angry Birds cookbook to teach us how to make eggs.

Rovio has announced their plans to launch a cookbook at the Open Mobile Summit in London.

The company, based in Finland, has not revealed much more about the impending cookbook other than the recipes in the book will be centred on eggs.

It will target families, will be self-published and be distributed by online retailers such as Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble. It will be available in book and e-book formats.

When the book is released, it will be the latest to add to the franchise's expansion into the gaming merchandise world. Peter Vesterbacka said the book is just one of Rovio's plans to make the game a major brand and franchise around the world.

Rovio has already sold more than three million Angry Birds plush toys and 30 million t-shirts. Its also planning a movie based on the Angry Birds game to be produced in-house.

Would you shell out cash (see what we did there?) for an Angry Birds cookbook or is the merchandising going too far? Let us know what you think on T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for more gaming news.
