News@8pm: HTC Sensation release and Black Ops DLC Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Samsung has followed in Apple’s footsteps in offering an external USB hub for its tab. Priced at $20 (£13) in the Samsung marketplace this performance enhancing peripheral should widen the appeal of the 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. In other news, a second-generation 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab has been leaked by Italian gadget blog, HDBlog. The 7-inch tablet will apparently feature 1GB of RAM along with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and Google’s 2.3.4 Gingerbread version of Android.
A WSJ journal has revealed that Apple retail store 'Genius bar' employees are forbidden from uttering the term "unfortunately" for fear of negative connotations. Elsewhere on the Apple front and the Cupertino tech giant is apparently intent on preventing music piracy and free access to gigs with new details of an Apple filed patent revealing the company is to block iPhone's video recording capabilities and live gigs and sporting events.
In video games, the former PR team behind Duke Nukem Forever has made a public apology for threats made via twitter to reviews who had given the heavily delayed game a hard ride through reviews. Sticking with gaming and Call of Duty: Black Ops is to receive its third downloadable content pack later this month with the ‘Annihilation’ map pack to hit Xbox Live on June 28th ahead of a PS3 and PC rollout, leaked in-store advertising has revealed.
Phone retailer, Phones4U has revealed that HTC’s first dual-core Smartphone, the HTC Sensation, is to land on O2 and Orange network plans from July 8th. Away from smartphones and on to tablets and Sony’s iPad-competing tablets, the S1 and S2, are set to arrive in September which could mean direct competing with the iPad3.

NFC coming to the UK as major networks join forces Posted: 16 Jun 2011 08:50 AM PDT
The UK's biggest mobile phone networks Vodafone, O2, Orange, Everything Everywhere and T-Mobile will join forces to create a central m-commerce system that will allow customers to pay for goods using their mobile phones O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile are set to work together to launch a NFC payment system that other businesses will be able to take advantage of.
In a joint venture that, "will deliver the technology required for the speedy adoption of mobile wallet and payments," subject to clearance the mobile wallet system should be ready for a rollout in late 2011.
Near Field Communication, which will allow phone users to pay for products and services using their phone, has already been introduced to the smartphone arena after the Samsung Nexus S was officially unveiled late last year with a NFC chip built into the handset.
Google launched its Wallet payment system last month, however, the service is only available in the US. Orange and Barclaycard also launched its Quick Tap NFC service in the UK last month, but this announcement is likely to be more significant for UK businesses and consumers.
Commenting on the joint venture Tom Alexander, CEo of Everything Everywhere said, "The benefits [of this joint venture] will be felt across the whole industry, allowing people to manage their money and make payments using their handsets, helping advertisers reach their customers on the move, and helping banks provide their clients with an easy and convenient way of making payments.
Vodafone UK's Chief Executive Officer Guy Laurence, added, "Currently people take their mobile, wallet and keys when they leave home.
"In the near future, people will now start leaving their wallet at home, and in the mid term their keys may also be integrated into their mobile as NFC allows the mobile to act as a digital access card. The joint venture is the next phase in realising that ambition."

Apple to block iPhones being used to record videos at gigs Posted: 16 Jun 2011 07:08 AM PDT
Apple iPhone users may soon find their devices blocked by infrared sensors while at music gigs as the consumer electronics giant steps up its bid to clamp down on music piracy Apple hopes to put an end to iPhone touters using their smartphone to film music gigs, a patent filed by the Cupertino company has revealed.
Filed back in 2009, the patent outlines how iPhone handsets will wireless communicate with infra-red sensors at live gigs and sporting events, automatically disabling user’s video recording capabilities if the device is held aloft with the camera enabled during the show.
Apple’s anti-gig camera patent details how “using the camera to capture a second image that includes an infrared signal with encoded data” would “disable a record function” or brand the footage with a compulsory watermark.
Would the lack of ability to film live music shows and sporting events put you off buying future iPhone renditions? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone app news: Pizza Express outs payment app Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:48 AM PDT
A guilt-free way to leave a stingy tip High street eatery Pizza Express has joined forces with PayPal to launch a new iPhone app that allows customers to pay their bill using the smartphone. Bills, which can be requested at any time during the meal, will now feature a 12-digit identification code, which can be typed into the app. Once that's done, users can log into their PayPal account and settle-up immediately.
Pizza Express says the free, new app allows customers to complete payment within a minute and will be supported by the company-wide roll-out of free Wi-Fi, via The Cloud service.
The app is designed for those folks who don't have the time to wait for their service staff to unload another round of £6.50 Peronis on the table next door before collecting the bill.
So, if you're in a business meeting and need to get back to the office, as soon as you've polished off your last slice of Quattro Formaggi, you can pay-up and move out.
The app also allows users to locate Pizza Express restaurants and also book a table prior to arrival. You can also check out the menu and keep tabs on your receipts from previous visits.
All in all it's a neat innovation that will surely be embraced by many more restaurants in the near future.

Facebook to release HTML5 Apple iPhone app store with Project Spartan? Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:17 AM PDT
Facebook is rumoured to be working on a HTML5 app store codenamed Project Spartan for Apple iPhone's Safari browser, in response to Twitter's integration in iOS 5 Apple’s stranglehold on the iPhone market is hard to miss; the App Store is currently the only way to get apps into iPhone, meaning Apple are the only people aside form the developer who can take any cut. Now Facebook looks set to try and change that, with a web-based app store of its own. The new market, codenamed ‘Project Spartan’, will be built on HTML5 and will run in the iPhone’s safari browser. Facebook has reportedly been working on it for the last couple of months and will be looking to launch it in a few weeks. According to sources, it’s already signed up about 80 developers, including Zynga. makers of FarmVille. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Motorola Milestone 3 not coming to UK Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:03 AM PDT
Clove.co.uk says UK version of Droid 3 will not be released. Getting primed for the release of the Motorola Milestone 3 here in the UK? Well this morning brings bad news, with online retailer Clove.co.uk claiming that the phone will not be launching on these shores.
In a blog post, the mobile emporium says, “The recently leaked Motorola Droid/Milestone 3 will not see a UK release. Of course, these things are open to change, but the message that we are receiving at the moment is that it will not be launched in the UK.”
No reason has been given for the decision, which is likely to upset those after a top-end new Android phone with QWERTY skills and no annoying custom skin slathered on top of Google’s OS.
The good news is that the Motorola Pro, revealed at MWC 2011 as the Euro version of the US-only Droid Pro, will now be released in July. That phone had also been expected not to make the trip to Britain.

Kinect for Windows set for roll out Posted: 16 Jun 2011 02:09 AM PDT

iPad 2: three jailed over leaks Posted: 15 Jun 2011 11:51 PM PDT
Accessories manufacturer used contacts at Foxconn to get illicit info. Three people have been convicted and jailed in China over the leak of confidential information relating to the iPad 2. Lin Kecheng, Hou Pengna and Xiao Chengsong were given sentences ranging from 12 to 18 months, as well as hefty fines, for their roles in stealing the information.
Mr Xiao, owner of the accessories maker MacTop, is said to have paid Ms Hou to get details of Apple’s then unannounced tablet. Hou had previously worked for Foxconn, the company which assembles Apple’s devices. Hou in turn paid Mr Lin to take photos of the back of the iPad 2 so Mr Xiao could develop accessories for the device ahead of his competitors.
Xiao was given 18 months in prison and a £14,300 fine, Hou 12 months and a £2,900 fine and Lin 14 months and a £9,500 fine.
Apple has not commented on the developments, with Foxconn saying, “We cannot comment on matters of internal security, but Foxconn takes its commitment to protecting its intellectual property as well as that of its customers very seriously and undertakes all appropriate actions to safeguard against any violations.”
