Google Chrome 13: print preview and instant pages

Posted: 18 Jun 2011 05:40 AM PDT

Chrome 13 beta is here

The latest beta release of Chrome, Chrome 13, has been released with new features.

Chrome 13 now supports Instant Pages and Print Preview mode. The Instant Pages feature loads the top search result in the background while users choose which link to click, and is meant to save more time on searches.

This is done with technology called prerendering, where some search results will load almost instantly after it's clicked.

What Google calls Issue number 173, is the much-requested Print Preview mode. Now, Chrome's built-in PDF viewer can show the page users would like to print and updates automatically as print settings are changed. Any webpage can also be saved as a PDF file.

There have also been additions to the omnibox. According to Google, it has "added some awesome to the omnibox by suggesting partial matches for URLs and page titles from your browsing history". So if users have watched a video on YouTube but can only remember a part of the title, typing that part will load suggestions based on the browser history.

20% of UK population received phishing calls, says Microsoft

Posted: 18 Jun 2011 04:18 AM PDT

If someone calls and asks for your PC's password, say no!

According to Microsoft, 20% of UK's population have had an IT-related phishing call.

The survey by Microsoft shows that many have received a call from a fake IT security firm in order to get money or personal details.

According to a Dynamic Markets poll, 15% out of 7,000 people across UK, US, Canada and Eire, have received a phishing call. Out of this, 20% of the phishing calls are in the UK.

Out of the 15% from the overall survey, 22% have given away personal details or paid cash to the scammers.

"Security software is constantly being improved and so cybercriminals are resorting to deception tactics to trick people into revealing important details or gaining access to their computers," said Stuart Aston, Chief Security Adviser, Microsoft UK.

"Many scammers even claim to be from legitimate companies or their partners. We would like to remind users of Microsoft software that the company does not keep track of consumers that purchase their software and does not directly contact consumers for any reason whatsoever," he added.

Aston also asked people not to trust callers claiming to be from Microsoft and asking for access to the home PC.

SEGA hacked; LulzSec offers to help track hackers

Posted: 18 Jun 2011 02:30 AM PDT

Who hacked SEGA?

SEGA is the latest in the line of gaming companies attacked by hackers, after Nintendo, Sony and Codemasters were hit recently.

The company took the service offline and has told gamers that personal details may have been compromised after hackers broke into its system. Names, email addresses and dates of birth that were on the SEGA Pass database were accessed by hackers.

However, credit card details were not taken, SEGA stressed.

The hacking group Lulz Security (LulzSec as it's popularly known) seemed to imply it had nothing to do with the hack. In a public tweet, it asked SEGA to contact the group as it loved Dreamcast and wanted to help them take the hackers down.

The tweet said: "We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down."

In the email SEGA Pass users received, SEGA said: "Over the last 24 hours we have identified that unauthorised entry was gained to our Sega Pass database. We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers' data and isolate the location of the breach. We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems."

Users are being advised to change their passwords immediately, even though password details on SEGA were encrypted as opposed to being in plain text.

Are you concerned by the wave of hacks on gaming websites? Does it affect your online gaming habits in any way? Let us know via T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in for more updates as they roll in.
