News@8pm: iPad 2 recalls and Battlefield 3 DLC

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

EA has announced it is to launch Battlefield 3 with a DLC 'Physical Warfare' pack that will only be available to consumers who pre-order the release from physical high street retail outlets such as GAME and gamestation.

Those hoping for the new Macbook Air to be released tomorrow are to be disappointed, new reports suggest with the end of the month now appearing a more likely. Taiwan’s Economic Daily has quoted industry sources as saying the first shipment, packing the new Air with Sandy Bridge processors and super-fast thunderbolt connection  is expected in late June. Together with the current model, 460,000 models are expected to ship this month.

Airbus offered an insight into flying circa 2015 today unveiling concept plans for the aircraft of the future. The concept cabin offers unrivalled panoramic views and the walls change colour as you fly.  There is also holographic pop-up gaming displays. Oh and the in-flight entertainment system? Powered by passenger body heat.

One of the biggest tech court cases between Apple and Nokia has finally been agreed. Apple is to license tech from Nokia, paying a one off fee as well as ongoing royalties.

Facebook has hit back at claims of its decline, insisting that an estimate of the reach of Facebook advertisements is not an accurate indication of its overall growth rate and that they are “very pleased with growth.”

Could the Wii U graphics be better than the Xbox 360? Although there is no official Nintendo information, Ubisoft has insisted that the “large memory capacity” will make this super-powerful.

Finally, if the iPad is not the exclusive device you hoped. Camael Diamonds has released an 18 carat gold model that boasts an impressive 300 carats of diamonds worth a hefty $1.2 million.

Android app news: Google Maps used more than Facebook

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 08:24 AM PDT

No room for Twitter in the top 20 most used connected apps.

Google Maps is the most-used connected app in the UK with over 6.4 million people using the handy-navigation app during the month of April alone.

In new research unveiled by comScore and GSM, Google Maps proved almost twice as possible as its nearest rival with Yahoo Weather (3.6m users) surprisingly beating Facebook into third place (3.5m users). Google Mobile, YouTube and eBay round out the top six.

Google Maps' surge to the become the most used app in the UK is obviously aided by being pre-loaded on all iPhone and Android devices, while Yahoo was able to beat Facebook due to it providing the weather data for the iPhone.

Sky also had a strong showing with four of its apps, Sky Live Football Centre, Sky News, Sky+ and Sky Sports all appearing in the top 20, while novely app Talking Tom Cat made a surprise showing at #15 with 422,000 users in the UK.

The top 20 most used connected apps has one notable exception: Twitter.

Apple recalls 'extremely small' number of iPad 2 tablets

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 06:53 AM PDT

Verizon iPads recalled by Apple

Apple has confirmed it has recalled an unspecified number of its iPad 2 tablets in the US with the Verizon-carried devices reportedly suffering connectivity issues.

Following reports last week that the Cupertino tech giant has been halting shipments of its market-dominating tablet mid-transit from production plants in China, Apple has now confirmed that “an extremely small number” of iPad 2 tablets are now being recalled.

“Duplicate MEID codes were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad units for the Verizon 3G network,” announced an Apple spokesperson confirming the product recall. MEID codes are a supposed one-of-a-kind numerical code used to identify a device when securing its connection to a CDMA network.

“Apple has given all the stores a list of serial numbers to scan, if it’s a match we were told to set aside and ship back to Apple, these are only for Verizon iPads,” said an Apple store employee in the US. “This was to be done on Monday and continue to scan all shipments thru June 11. I had over one hundred to send back.”

Whilst Apple has failed to reveal exactly how many devices have been recalled, the issue which only affects users of the Verizon tied tablet will see users who have bought a faulty unit given a free replacement.

Can anything topple the iPad 2’s market dominating success atop the tablet charts or has Apple already run away with the market and recreated the iPod affect? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo 3DS sales top 1 million mark in Japan

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 06:43 AM PDT

After 13 weeks of sales, Nintendo has shifted its one millionth 3DS console

After 13 weeks of sales, Nintendo has shifted its one millionth Nintendo 3DS console in its native Japan, Japanese newspaper Mainichi has reported.

The seemingly impressive sales figures slump in comparison to the pocket 3D console’s predecessors, however, with the DSi and DS Lite devices taking just seven weeks to hit the one million milestone. The original Nintendo DS took a mere four weeks to wrack up one million unit sales in Japan.

Nintendo announced in March it had sold just over 3 million units of the 3DS globally to date following the international rollout of the glasses-free 3D gaming device.

With the 3DS’ slow rise to popularity being marred by continued health warnings and worries and a weak offering of launch titles, the console’s uptake could be set to rise with big titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D and Super Mario all set to appear in the near future.

Following the official unveil of the Sony PlayStation Vita recently, Nintendo will be hoping that native and international sales of the 3DS pick up ahead of the arrival of the PSP replacement later this year.

Will the 3DS become a must buy addition to the mass public’s gadget arsenal or slowly disappear into nothingness? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BBC iPlayer to launch in Western Europe as iPad app

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 04:32 AM PDT

BBC iPlayer to be subscription based iPad app in Western Europe

The BBC is set to make the BBC iPlayer service available to a Western European market with the catch-up service to launch as a pay monthly subscription based iPad app.

Whilst UK users of the iPlayer service are granted access to the BBC back catalogue free of charge though the compulsory television licence fee, Western Europeans, like their American counterparts, will be required to pay a monthly subscription in order to access such content.

With wannabe European users of the iPlayer service expected to have to shell out in the region of $10 (£6) per month to use the service, Jana Bennett, the BBC’s President of Global iPlayer, has described the European service as “a different proposition” from the UK’s catch-up offering with an amalgamation of old and new BBC content to be accessible.

"The freedom from catch-up means that we've got a lot more flexibility in terms of what we put on there and how we present it," Bennett is expected to tell the Banff World Television Festival later today.

Although limited to an iPad application at launch, the Western European and eventually global iPlayer offerings will be offered in multiple formats in due course with open internet access a likely endpoint.

Duke Nukem Forever tops UK All Format gaming charts

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 04:09 AM PDT

Duke Nukem Forever beats LA Noire to top gaming charts after 15 year delay

Duke Nukem Forever has stomped its way to the top of the UK All Format Video Game Chart more than 14 years after it was first announced.

Having hit stores on Friday following a near 15 year delay, Duke Nukem Forever went straight to the top of the gaming charts pushing Rockstar’s LA Noire down to the number two spot with the dance fitness craze Zumba Fitness rounding out the top three.

Recording 56 per cent of its sales for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, Duke Nukem Forever also recorded strong sales for both the PS3 and PC platforms with the two mediums accounting for 30 and 14 per cent of total sales respectively.

Infamous 2 and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean ended the week fourth and fifth in the UK All Format Gaming Charts respectively with DiRT 3 in sixth and Brink in seventh. Red Faction: Armageddon, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Portal 2 completed the top 10.

Facebook membership decline: Social giant responds

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 03:59 AM PDT

A Facebook statement hit back at claims of Facebook phenomenon beginning to lose momentum

Although Facebook continues to move towards 700 million users worldwide, reports have emerged that the rate of growth has slowed for the second month in a row.

The Inside Facebook blog suggests that Facebook lost roughly 6 million users in the US, falling from 155.2 million to 149.4 million. Meanwhile, 100,000 of the 30 million UK users reportedly switched off.

Now the company has bitten back. A Facebook statement this morning implied that the data retrieved offers only a broad estimate of the reach of Facebook advertisements and is therefore not designed “to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook.”

The statement then continues: "We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook. More than 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day."

These stories do seem to crop up at the same time every year and the explanation may not be Facebook ‘fatigue’ but rather due to improving weather and a raft of hacking stories increasingly breeding a sense of online fear.

What do you think? Is bubble beginning to burst, do you still love the FB, or have you just been enjoying the sun? Tell us the T3 Facebook page or T3 Twitter feed.

Apple iPad gets $1.2 million gold and diamond makeover

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 03:26 AM PDT

18 carat gold and 300 carats of diamonds used to spruce up aging iPad

Despite Apple’s iPad 2 being readily available for as little as £399, Camael Diamonds has announced it is to release an accessorised rendition of the original Apple tablet for a hefty $1.2 million (£731,172).

With the monstrous price tag made up from an 18 carat gold coating topped off with more than 300 carats of flawless diamonds, the Camael Diamonds finished tablet will see its exclusive owner stand out from the hoards of iPad touting commuters.

Arcing back to the original Apple tablet the blinged out creation forgoes the dual front and rear mounted cameras and 1GHz dual-core processor of the second-generation Apple iPad instead opting to utilise the original model’s thicker form factor and untainted rear casing.

Ensuring the diamond and gold encrusted gadget is still recognisable as an Apple branded device, Camael Diamonds have finished the home button and Apple logo found on the rear of the tablet with limited black diamonds.

What gadgets would you like to see given the pimped-out, blinged-up makeover treatment? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Battlefield 3 Physical Warfare DLC exclusive to high street

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Battlefield 3 DLC to be exclusive to in-store pre-orders

Developer EA has announced that its upcoming Battlefield 3 release will land with a “Physical Warfare” DLC pack exclusive to gamers who pre-order the release through physical retail outlets, sparking outrage with gaming fans.

Set to launch in the UK on October 25th, Battlefield 3 is to challenge the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for the title of game of the year with those looking to snap the release up for a cut-priced fee online unable to acquire the “Physical Warfare” DLC that will bring exclusive weaponry and accessories.

Available to gamers who pre-order the first person shooter through high street outlets of GAME and gamestation, the Battlefield 3 “Physical Warfare” pack which features the Back to Karkand map pack will offer those who shun online orders a feast of exclusive content.

"Type 88 light machine gun with bipod for superior firepower and total zone control, the SKS sniper rifle flash suppressor that provides increased stealth abilities for Recon soldiers, and the lethal armour-piercing flechette ammo for the DAO-12 semi-automatic shotgun that is sure to tear through anything in its path,” are all included in the Physical Warfare pack according to EA.

"Also included is day one access to the highly versatile DAO-12 semi-automatic shotgun itself."

Is EA right to push gamers back to the high street and away from continued online ordering? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Wii U graphics: Better than Xbox 360 and PS3?

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 02:49 AM PDT

Increased internal memory may boost performance

Since its announcement last week, there’s been a lot of talk about the Wii U’s graphical capability. Although none of it’s come from Nintendo themselves. Indeed, the world’s been at a bit of a loss as to exactly how powerful the new machine is. Allow Ubisoft to shed some light…

One of the company’s top technical architects, Marc Parenteau, has spoken to Geeky-Gadgets about the new machine, in reference to porting its games from the Xbox 360 and PS3. He says that “the multi-core architecture of the console is a natural fit for our in-house HD engines, such as the Anvil engine used in Assassin’s Creed.”

This means that the standard of graphics is at least as good as on its current-gen rivals. But is it any better?

“In addition,” continued Parenteau, “the large memory capacity of the console will be used to bring performance enhancements, such as pre-calculating data or increasing our cache sizes.” So that internal flash memory might make for nippier rendering and more sheen than on the PS3 and Xbox. Good, but it’s not an overwhelming report.

Parenteau closed in diplomatic form, claiming that the Wii U’s innards “will allow us to reuse our assets across platforms and make sure that the graphical quality is top-notch.”

Is the current-gen spec of the Wii U something of a let down? Check out our exclusive Wii U hands-on review video below and then let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Airbus reveals future flying concept

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 01:21 AM PDT

A quick 18 holes at 3,000 feet? Go on then.

This is the plane of the future, according to Airbus.

The concept cabin features an ‘intelligent’ membrane that can be made see-through for unrivalled panoramic views as you fly. (Though maybe not so great to for those scared of heights.) The walls change colour according to lighting conditions, and it features holographic pop-up gaming displays to keep yourself occupied while you fly. And the traditional inflight entertainment system? It’s powered by the passenger’s body heat.

It’s how we’ll be flying in 2050, according to Airbus, and was unveiled yesterday at a press conference in London.

Other features include the ability to read bedtime stories to the kids back home over Wi-Fi, and you can play a round of virtual golf or take part in interactive conferences. The structure of the concept cabin mimics the efficiency of bird bone.

First, economy and business classes will be replaced by zones for relaxation, work and socialising, the latter coming equipped with a fully stocked bar. The only way to fly.

HP launching rival to Apple's iCloud?

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:54 AM PDT

So expect to see more of Dr. Dre and his Envy laptops

The dust may still be settling on Apple’s iCloud announcement last week, but now HP looks set to get in on the game with its very own cloud-based entertainment service.

According to Billboard, HP is in talks with all the major music labels about the service, which will also offer movies and TV shows, just like iTunes.

Discussions started a few months ago, the report says, and precede the launch of HP’s Touchpad tablet, which launches in a couple of weeks. Reportedly marketing presentations of the Touchpad noted it would include HP stores for music and movies, as well as allowing Touchpad owners to stream music they don’t own, a la Spotify. (HP already offers the App Catalog, its own app store, via the webOS it acquired when it took over Palm.)

Sources say HP is also looking to extend relations with labels to get better access to artists who can promote their products, like it has with Dr. Dre and his Beats tech as featured in its Envy line of computers.

So, while discussions seem in the early stages still, HP could soon be offering its own rival to iTunes, Amazon Uncrate, and Spotify. But would you dance to its tune? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter.

Apple/Nokia court case ends in license agreement

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:17 AM PDT

Espoo and Cupertino kiss and make up

It was one of the biggest tech court cases of recent times, with two of the largest companies at loggerheads over patent infringements. And now it’s come to a close with a whimper rather than a bang, as Apple has agreed to license tech from Nokia, paying a one off fee as well as ongoing royalties. That’s right, all patent litigation between the two companies has ceased, and they’ve agreed to play nice.

The specific details of the deal are confidential, but Stephen Elop, president and chief executive of Nokia said in a press release, “We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees. This settlement demonstrates Nokia's industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”

Nokia was accusing Apple of infringing no fewer than 46 of its patents, through the ITC, US, Dutch, German or British courts.

So, at last some good news for Nokia, following its recent woes.

Apple MacBook Air coming later this month

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:48 PM PDT

The new MacBook Air was rumoured to be here as soon as tomorrow, but sadly that’s not looking like the case. Rather, we’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to wait yet, as it's looking like it'll launch at the end of June, according to new reports.

Taiwan’s Economic Daily has quoted industry sources as saying the first shipment is expected in late June. Together with the current model, 460,000 models are expected to ship this month.

The new Airs are expected to come packing Sandy Bridge processors (Intel’s latest and smallest, packing a punch without taking up space), with i5 and i7 chips, as well as Apple’s super fast Thunderbolt connection.

So, unlucky for anyone expecting a new laptop tomorrow. So what can we expect come Wednesday? Unlocked iPhones in the US, according to the rumour mill.

Cello launches £499 3D TV

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:23 PM PDT

3D comes down in price, now mainstream

Cello, purveyor of budget TVs (and makers of one of the first iPlayer-enabled sets thanks to its iViewer proprietary tech), has released a 42-inch 3D TV that costs just £499 - that’s the cheapest at that size, by our reckoning.

The company is also releasing a 47-inch model, selling at £699.

Both sets feature LG’s passive 3D LCD panel, and come with four sets of glasses each - enough for all the family. Additional pairs can be yours for just £19.99 a pair. They’re 1080p HD, with two HDMIs, EPG, and two USB sockets for loading on your own shows and films.

Both models will be on sale this month on the high street via Marks and Spencers, as well as Freemans, Grattans, expressgifts.com and ebuyer.co.uk.

And with 3D TVs now in store at M&S, it’s proof 3D is mainstream, and no longer the preserve of the early adopter.

What do you think? Will you be getting your next TV while you buy your pants? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter.

Tech Today: Duke Nukem panned, Steve Jobs comic

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 07:52 PM PDT

It's the tech news that broke after you logged-off.

Commercial success but a critical kicking for Duke
Gamers who have waited 13-years for the release of Duke Nukem Forever sent it soaring to the top of the UK gaming charts following its release on Friday. However the commercial success has been tempered by a critical beating as the first reviews to creep out have largely panned the game.

HP to launch an iCloud rival?
Everyone seems to be jumping on the cloud music streaming bangwagon with reports on Tuesday claiming that HP is in talks with record labels over the launch of its own rival to Apple's iCloud. However any launch would unlikely to be in time for the HP TouchPad tablet, which arrives in just a couple of weeks.

Facebook juror charged with contempt
Now we all know someone who has been in trouble for using Facebook on the job, but when you're the juror on a multi-million pound drugs trial then it's probably best that you don't contact the defendant using the social networking site. New MacBook Air now set for July
After initial reports suggested that the MacBook Air refresh might arrive as soon as Wednesday, comes news that they're unlikely to arrive until next month. Sources had predicted an early arrival, but that's now set to be the launch of unlocked iPhones in the US. New Airs are likely to have Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt I/O tech.

News@8: Monday saw a rather brazen prediction from industry analysts that Windows Phone will overtake Apple by 2015, while other far-fetched reports suggest that Apple will begin updating the iPhone and iPad twice a year. Away from Apple, Nokia is upgrading the camera for the N8, while the Xbox 360 is set to receive a processor boost.
