News@8: The Apple cult continues & Updates all round

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

The chaps at Apple have been busy of late, heating up the race to catch them. The International Data Corporation’s quarterly report on all things mobile seems to suggest that by 2015, Windows phone will have greater market share than Apple’s iOS.

That brave assessment won’t hold much stead if the massively-anticipated iPhone 5 lives up to expectation. September is when it is expected to drop. Another report claims that Apple is capable of updating its iPhone and iPad offerings twice a year from here on in. The Apple cult surely won’t mind.

Still on Apple, it seems as though the MacBook Air is ready for its refresh this Wednesday. Renowned Apple leakster Chronic has claimed the ultra portable laptops are likely to see increased storage space on the machine’s solid-state drives and a boost to Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors.

We love it when firms improve their software to further utilise the hardware capabilities. An update for the Nokia N8 enabling smoother playback and video capture, while also ensuring continuous playback, is top news for N8 owners, but does it make up for Symbian?

Speaking of upgrades, it seems the Xbox 360 will soon be shipped with a more efficient processor to allow developers to eke more from the aging console. Sony’s been talking removable innards, meanwhile, with leaked shots of the PSP Vita’s removable storage media showing up.

Lastly, our weekly ‘What’s on the editor’s desk?’ competition returns tomorrow.Keep it locked to the T3 Facebook page from 10am-3pm for your clues and a chance to win.

iPad app news: TS Eliot's The Waste Land hits the iPad

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:41 AM PDT

Influential and confuddling peom gets a new life on the iPad.

TS Eliot's The Waste Land, one of the most celebrated pieces of poetry ever written, has arrived on the App Store, complete with audio readings from a host of famous faces.

Despite its importance, The Waste Land, first published in 1922, has often been considered difficult to make sense of due to the sheer amount of obscure references, metaphors and difference voices speaking throughout the text.

The new iPad app from Touch Press, priced at £7.99, hopes to bring a greater understanding of the poem, by presenting it with a filmed live performance of the entire poem, along with Eliot's annotations of the literature.

Perhaps the coolest aspect of this app is the read-along audio tracks from the likes of the late Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars and Viggo Mortensen (Argaorn from Lord of the Rings) as well as a reading from Eliot himself.

There's also 35 video perspectives of The Waste Land, from experts, filmed in collaboration with the BBC.

If reading The Waste Land has been on your bucket list for the last twenty years, but you've been too scared to dive in head first, the iPad app is the perfect companion. Let us know when you make sense of it.

Nokia N8 camera firmware upgrade to bring 30FPS video

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 07:06 AM PDT

Will it help Nokia's tumbling shares?

Got a Nokia N8? Potential good news: this weekend’s brought speculation of a software update for the snap-happy mobile, to better utilise the cameras capabilities. Improving on the already impressive cam, 30FPS will enable smoother playback and video capture, while continuous auto-focus will also join the fray.

Accessed through the Nokia website, the update will further the credentials of a phone already praised for its impressive hardware capabilities, despite the much-lambasted Symbian OS still dragging things down. The update will no doubt try help sales and aid Nokia on its hard-fought uphill battle against tumbling shares and lowering profits.

All well and good then, but surely further improving what’s already the N8’s strong suit is still negating underlying issues with the OS? Nokia insists that the phone, its flagship, is as impressive in its camera capabilities as the markets’ latest compact camera, but as a phone the N8 still has a way to go if it wants to play against its rivals.

Does this update make any difference? Do you disagree with our Symbian hating? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Sony PlayStation Vita storage media pictured

PSP Vita memory cards snapped with four storage variants

Memory cards for the upcoming Sony PlayStation Vita have been caught in the wild with four storage options snapped doing the rounds at E3.

Whilst Sony has yet to formerly unveil what form its new portable console’s game cartridges will take, memory cards spotted at the Vita E3 showing have revealed Sony plans to release four sizes of memory card for the device with 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB offerings all available.

Looking very much like standard microSD cards, the memory cards will bolster the Vita’s standard inbuilt flash storage that will allow developers to produce programmes befitting to the console’s minimum performance capabilities.

With Sony revealing last week that Vita consoles are not likely to be region locked, allowing for seamless pairing of peripherals, the leaked memory cards are to allow gamers to download and store gaming content from the PSP store without slowing the device.

Will the new Sony PS Vita take the portable gaming market by storm or fall to Nintendo’s 3D touting 3DS offering? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release date nears as phone enters final testing

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 06:16 AM PDT

iPhone refresh to see 5 land in September with new iOS

Apple is to officially launch the much mooted Apple iPhone 5 in September as new reports suggest the handset has entered the final stages of testing.

Having opted to do away with its usual annual product cycle in failing to unveil the iPhone 5 at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference that ran in San Francisco last week, Apple is believed to be heading for a September reveal with MacRumors claiming the Cupertino company has just entered the final stages of testing for the heavily rumoured handset.

Having unveiled iOS 5 ahead of its announced autumn rollout it is believed Apple will launch the fifth generation iPhone handset to coincide with the hefty software update with September having been repeatedly leaked and rumoured as the device’s launch period.

With Apple’s product cycles usually seeing September as the time to refresh the range of iPod devices, this years autumn opener could see a bumper offering with the iPhone 5 expected to touch down with an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities and the same A5 ARM processor as found in the iPad 2.

What features would you like to see included in the iPhone 5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Xbox 360 given processor update by Microsoft

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 04:41 AM PDT

SoC processor makes its way to future Xbox 360 consoles

Microsoft has announced it is to utilise a new processing system in its Xbox 360 slim models with the new CPU to provide better power efficiency to the leading console.

Dubbed the system-on-chip (SoC) processor, Microsoft’s new energy efficient system will see the console’s main processor, graphics, memory and I/O logic all compiled into a single powerful chip.

As well as improving battery efficiency, the new SoC system will reduce internal heat levels as well as reducing manufacturing costs of the console, a reduction that will hopefully be passed on to consumers. The latest in a long line of updates since Microsoft first launched the Xbox 360, the SoC processor will join the refreshed motherboard and small power supply units found in the new slim models.

Whilst Microsoft has yet to announce when the first SoC touting consoles will hits stores it has been keen to stress to users that the new processor will not face any compatibility issues with existing software.

Would a lower price point tempt you into snapping up a new Xbox 360 slim console? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple to launch new iPhone and iPad every six months

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 03:11 AM PDT

Apple to begin rolling out two iPhone devices per year

Apple is to radically alter its formerly rigid annual product cycles and release new iterations of the iPhone and iPad every six months, an industry analyst has claimed.

In a bid to counteract the influx of new and strongly performing Android smartphones and tablets, Apple is reportedly to do away with its former annual refresh plans instead opting to update its market leading iPhone and iPad devices twice a year, Adnaan Ahmed of the Berenberg Bank in Germany has suggested.

Despite being launched almost a year ago, Apple’s iPhone 4 handset recently became the best selling phone ever with Apple shifting 18.65 million iPhones during the opening quarter of this year suggesting its current annual product update is working.

With Apple having scrapped its annual refresh of the iPhone in failing to unveil the iPhone 4’s successor at WWDC last week with focus now shifting to a September arrival, Ahmen, who also predicts Apple will unveil a new budget iPhone, could see his claims come to light later this year.

Will Apple start releasing two iPhone handsets per year or are Ahmed’s predictions wide of the mark? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple MacBook Air refresh to land this Wednesday?

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:39 AM PDT

Ultra-thin MacBook Air to get updated this week

Apple is to rollout the 2011 refresh of its ultra-thin range of MacBook Air laptops this Wednesday, renowned Apple leakster Chronic has claimed.

Proclaiming the update via his Twitter feed the repeated Apple tipster announced he is “100 per cent sure” the MacBook Air will undergo its yearly refresh this week, adding to a spate of rumours that an overhaul is in the works.

Expected to maintain the same minimalist form factor as the 2010 models, the mooted updates to the 11.6- and 13.3-inch ultra portable laptops are likely to see increased storage space on the machine’s solid-state drives and faster dual-core processors.

The latest claims follow recent reports that Apple has placed an order for 400,000 new MacBook Air machines to be produced during June with high sales expected to follow the refresh of the machine that measures in at a mere 30mm slim at its thickest point.

Will Apple officially unveil its new range of MacBook Air devices this week or are the continued reports and rumours wide of the super slim mark? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows Phone to overtake iOS by 2015, claims report

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:38 AM PDT

But Android will be out in front of both

How’s this for some wishful thinking? The International Data Corporation’s quarterly report on all things mobile has bravely suggested that the Windows Phone platform will have more market share in 2015 than Apple’s iOS.

The report claims that the added clout of Nokia will work in Microsoft’s favour, propelling the mobile OS to a 20.3 per cent market share within four years. That’s a far cry from the 3.8 per cent it will achieve by the end of this year.

IDC reckons that Apple will slip into third place in 2015, with a market share of just 16.9 per cent. This’ll leave Android with a far superior market share of 43.8 per cent, which will be achieved due to its diversity and range of handsets.

The report also claims that in 2013, 1 billion smartphones will ship worldwide, which is more than double the total expected for 2011. Is IDC right, or are these projections way off the mark? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Spotify sign up Universal ahead of US launch?

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:24 AM PDT

Spotify in the USA moving one step closer?

Spotify and its streaming music service could be nearing launch in the US with reports that it has now secured a licensing deal with major music label Universal.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Spotify already has EMI and Sony on its side while also being in "advanced discussions" with Warner in anticipation of a breaking out of Europe.

There are no details yet of whether the Swedish based company is in talks with the independents but it is likely that getting them on board would be key to its success.

In the most recent developments to its current service in Europe, iPod syncing, wireless iPhone sync and a MP3 store arrived in a major update earlier this year which also included more restrictions for Spotify Free users.

Do you think Spotify will be a success in the US? Let us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.
