Also, Apple adds cloud-based storage locker for purchased TV shows
Effectively, Apple just added iCloud functionality for TV shows. That mimics the iTunes in the Cloud service Apple announced at WWDC

Nokia ditches the alphabet
Ailing smartphone giant Nokia has decided to, once again, alter the naming conventions for its line of handsets. This time the company has gone old school, by adopting a numbers-only approach, ditching the alphabet. It's not so long ago Nokia thought it was a wonderful idea to have N-Series, C-Series, X-Series and E-Series phones which grew in stature as numbers rose between 1-10. Obviously customers felt otherwise.

iPhone 5 release date now set for October not September?

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 09:46 AM PDT

Apple's iPhone 5 release date looks to have moved as new iPhone 5 rumours put the launch in October

The riddle of Apple will release the mooted iPhone 5 has taken yet another twist with the rumour mill now suggest the iPhone 5 release date will be in October, not September as previously thought.

Whilst a September iPhone 5 release date has floated around for a number of months, new iPhone 5 rumours from All Things D, the Wall Street Journal’s tech blog, have claimed the eagerly awaited handset will actually touch down one month later in October.

Citing “sources with knowledge of the situation,” All Things D has claimed that reports of September iPhone 5 release date are “misinformed” with the actually arrival to be on a unspecified date in October.

Recent reports have suggested that the iPhone 5 release will see the handset launch with a 1GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities whilst claimed iPhone 5 pictures have suggested the handset will have a new slimmer form factor.

iPhone 3GS to be discontinued following iPhone 5 release?

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 07:39 AM PDT

Apple iPhone 5 release date to mark the end for the iPhone 3GS?

Currently available to buy alongside the iPhone 4 dwindling stocks of the iPhone 3GS suggest the aging handset will be discontinued in the wake of the iPhone 5 release date.

Citing “reliable sources at a major European iPhone carrier,” Apple blog 9to5Mac has reported that mobile network providers are running unusually low on iPhone 3GS stocks with fewer handsets coming through to replenish the low levels.

With the iPhone 5 release date expected in September, latest iPhone 5 rumours have suggested Apple will sell the mooted 1GHz dual-core processor touting handset alongside the current iPhone 4 with the iPhone 3GS being killed off after two years on the market.

Adding further fuel to the fire 9to5Mac continues that “a tipster at an Orange UK store in London has let us know that the carrier has told employees that the iPhone 3GS is no longer available.”

What features would you like to see land in the iPhone 5? Is there any need for the 3GS to remain on the market with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 available? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC to ship 13.5 million handsets in Q3

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 07:04 AM PDT

HTC to set record third quarter sales thanks to new Android and Windows Phone 7 smartphones

HTC has announced it intends to ship 13.5 million handsets during the third quarter of 2011 having revealed record figures for Q2.

Shipping 12.2 million smartphones during the second quarter, just 4.5 handsets less than Nokia, formerly the highest handset distributor in the world, HTC has said it intends to continue its rapid growth and post the lofty Q3 figures that would mark a 98 per cent year-on-year growth rate.

Having made its name shipping high-end Android handsets, HTC reportedly now sees 30 per cent of its product sales made up from its range of Windows Phone 7 touting devices, a range that is set to be expanded in the coming weeks with a mooted 12-megaxpiel camera boasting smartphone set to land alongside the WP7 Mango update.

HTC’s increased sales are set to be driven by its latest flagship handset the 1.2GHz dual-core HTC Sensation and its first 3D capable device the HTC EVO 3D. With the HTC EVO 3D being delayed until September mobile network provider Vodafone has revealed it has dropped its plans to stock the 3D phone marking a major blow to the Taiwanese manufacturer.

Does HTC make the best smartphones on the market or does the likes of the Sensation fall short of Samsung’s Galaxy S II and Apple’s iPhone 4? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

It means that footy fans with an iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone, Nokia or BlackBerry device don't have to wait until Match of the Day, or Sky's Football First shows to see the action from games that aren't shown on live TV.

Aside from the goals, the ESPN app will also feature video highlights from games, video match previews, live scoreboards, and push notifications alerting fans whenever a goal is scored.

The only time you won't be able to catch the action is between the UEFA protected window of 2:45-5:15pm window on Saturdays, but after that, the action will flow.

Last season the app cost users £3.99 a month or £29.99 a season, so this new and enhanced free version of the app represents some fantastic value for smartphone users.

Nokia 500 announced as the company's first 1GHz phone

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 04:55 AM PDT

Nokia's Symbian Anna mobile operating system makes a comeback as the company unveils its new Nokia 500 handset phone

Nokia has unveiled its new Symbian Anna powered Nokia 500 handset.

Sporting a 3.2-inch nHD capacitive touchscreen with a 640 x 360p resolution display, the Nokia 500 measures up at just 14.1mm thick and comes equipped with 2GB of internal storage. As if that wasn't enough, it also boasts a tech-friendly 1GHz processor - the fastest processor to feature in any handset by the Finnish phone giant.

Pitched at the entry-level smartphone market, the Nokia 500 has been pegged with a pre-tax €150 (£130) price tag ahead of an August or September UK release date.

Whilst Nokia moves into offering MeeGo powered devices in the form of the recently unveiled Nokia N9, and with the company’s first Windows Phone 7 handset on the horizon, the 500 handset is evidence the Finnish firm isn’t done with its Symbian mobile operating system just yet.

Having referred to Symbian as a burning platform in the past, Nokia CEP Stephen Elop appears to be standing by the clunky operating system despite the company reporting a £323 million loss in profit.

Can the Nokia 500 and its speedy processor help save Nokia and its flailing Symbian operating system? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Desire Gingerbread update available to download

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 03:53 AM PDT

HTC Desire handset now comes with Android 2.3 as HTC and Google both decide the Gingerbread mobile operating system is most popular with customers

HTC has made the Android 2.3 update available for the HTC Desire for the first time, with owners of the former smartphone powerhouse now able to download the Gingerbread operating system (OS) for their devices.

Following a will-they-wont-they moment earlier this year that saw HTC openly declare the Desire handset would not be getting the Android 2.3 update, the Taiwanese company quickly bowed to consumer demand, backtracking on its previous statement to reveal it will offer the latest Android OS.

“Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire,” HTC declared in June before adding a month later: “We have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire, our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July!”

Having cited sizing issues as the reason why the now aging Desire would not be getting the Android 2.3 update, HTC has had to squash the software release down with those looking to update from FroYo being warned about the possible loss of previously installed applications.

Have you already added Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS to your HTC Desire? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon stop app submissions following Apple lawsuit

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 03:15 AM PDT

Apple 'App Store' lawsuit sees Amazon Germany stop app submissions

Amazon has been forced to stop accepting submissions to its Android application store in the US after Apple filed a lawsuit against the retailer’s use of the term ‘App Store’.

With a judge in the US dismissing Apple’s attempted legal battle with Amazon over the trademarked use of the term ‘App Store’ the Cupertino-based company took its legal action to Europe where the German arm of Amazon has now been made to cease operations of its Amazon AppStore.

“We wanted to notify you of a recent change to your Developer Portal account; for the time being, we are not accepting new app submissions from developers located in Germany,” Amazon told a number of applications developers via email.

“We have been forced to impose this restriction due to a legal action filed by Apple in Germany seeking to prevent us from using the term “appstore.”  We believe Apple’s claim is without merit and are actively contesting it.”

The retailer went on to add that: “It could be possible that we will see similar things happening in other European countries, and Amazon may be forced to stop taking application submissions in those countries as well until the various court cases reach their conclusion.”

Should Apple be able to own the rights to the term ‘App Store’ or is it too generic a term to be trademarked? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple's Foxconn factory hiring 1m robot workers

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 02:13 AM PDT

Foxconn keeping schtum on how this affects its current fleshy workforce.

Foxconn, the Chinese company responsible for churning out Apple's laptops and iDevices, is to bring one million robots onto the factory floor in the next three years.

Foxconn chairman Terry Gou said the robotic workers are being brought in to handle simple assembly line tasks. Foxconn already makes use of some 10,000 robots, with plans to deploy another 290,000 in the next twelve months.

There's no word on how the introduction of these cybernetic co-workers will affect the livelihoods of the 1.2m human workers at the company, but those numbers can't be reassuring.

Tech Today: Apple to launch 3 HDTVs in March 2012?

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 05:55 PM PDT

In a busy Sunday of tech news, rumours grew of Apple's plans to enter the HD TV market, while an iPhone 4 price cut will interest those in the market for the iPhone 5. There's news from Google and Nintendo too in our Tech Today round-up.

Apple to launch HDTV in March 2012?
Here's another Apple rumour that just won't go away. Reports on Sunday claim that the Cupertino-based giant will launch  HD TV sets in March 2012, which will come in three different sizes. Wall Street analyst Trip Chowdry says the anticipated telly will be similar to the Bose VideoWave, in that it will have a built-in sound system. Using information he has culled from various developer events, Chowdry reckons Spring of 2012 is the most likely timeline for arrival.

Google TV gets massive price cut following sales flop
Although Google TV is yet to reach the UK, the chances are that when it eventually does, it's not going to be the premium-priced set top box we all assumed it would. The Logitech Revue box, one of the only Google TV-compatible devices has been slashed in price from $299 to a mere $99 US dollars. That's about sixty quid in real money.

iPhone 4 price cuts mean iPhone 5 is imminent
Both Radio Shack, a sort-of higher-end US version of Maplin, and Target... well we don't have an equivalent to the awesomeness that is Target, are all set to cut the price of the iPhone 4 handset on Monday, which usually means the arrival of the next generation model is imminent. Leaked documents suggest that, from tomorrow, yanks who sign up for a two year contract on the AT&T network will get a 16GB iPhone 4 for $169 instead of $199.

Orginal NES games to be updated for 3DS
Nintendo announced a while back that it would be offering Nintendo Entertainment System games on the new 3DS console. What they didn't let on until now is that these just won't be haphazard ports of Mario and Zelda, but full upgraded games for the new era. Now, these NES classics will boast new features like multiplayer. The announcement comes as part of the new Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program, which rewards those console owners with a host of free games.

Google Chrome overtakes Firefox in the UK
In a rather surprising turn of events, Google Chrome is now the UK's second most popular web browser, following Microsoft Internet Explorer. Chrome has overtaken Mozilla Firefox by snatching 22 per cent of the UK market, just three years after launch. A heavy advertising campaign has been credited, but it might have something to do with the latest version of Firefox being a massive turn-off for some.

Nokia N9 release date September 15th?

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 03:57 AM PDT

Further evidence that the N9's release worries are behind us.

Just days after websites in Russia and Kazakhstan were reporting that Nokia's upcoming N9 smartphone would touch down mid-August, Orange's official Swiss website has put the N9 release date at September 15th.

Alongside a "coming soon" image of the N9 and a list of features, visitors to the N9's page on the site are met with the message: "This product is not yet available but will come soon. Check out its features and get ready for its launch on the 15.09.2011."

The Nokia N9 comes with an 8MP camera on the back, standard VGA camera on the front and a 1GHz single-core processor, which despite lacking the oomph we've come to enjoy on handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S2 still performed admirably in our hands-on preview. It will also be the first handset to run the new Meego OS - a big step up from the ill-fated Symbian of yesteryear.

Of course, a September release date in Switzerland doesn't guarantee a September release for us in Blighty, but those of us waiting breath bated for the first Meego-powered mobile can take the announcement as another welcome sign that the N9 is on its way.

Sony PS Vita release date October 28th?

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 02:33 AM PDT

The Sony PS Vita release date may have been outed as October 28th 2011, if publicity materials from Blockbuster are to be believed.

Sony's follow up to the PSP handheld cropped up on a list of upcoming Blockbuster big holiday releases including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Assassin's Creed Revelations and Gears of War 3.

According to the flyer (pictured), the WiFi and 3G versions of the PS Vita will both launch on the same day, priced at 229.99 and 279.99, respectively.

The PS Vita was announce by Sony at this year's E3 after months of speculation on the existence of a "PSP 2". According to the Sony press conference, over 80 titles are in development for the handheld, with "virtually every publisher" signed on to produce their own Vita games.
