iPad app news: Skype app officially arrives Posted: 02 Aug 2011 12:21 PM PDT
Long wait over for iPad owners. Skype has finally launched its official app for iPad, meaning tablet-owners no longer have to get by on the iPhone version.
The free to download Skype for iPad app appeared on the App Store on Tuesday with a completely new, tablet-optimised user interface.
The application will offer video chat for those lucky enough to own an iPad 2, as well as VoIP calls and instant messaging with all of your Skype contacts.
The new interface presents your contacts as cards, which can be opened and then it's easy to choose whether you want video chat, IM, voice calling or SMS.
All of the activities can be performed over 3G or Wi-Fi, across all platforms, which gives Skype an edge over Apple's own FaceTime app, which only offers Apple-to-Apple conversations over Wi-Fi.
You can get your hands on the official Skype app for iPad from the iTunes now. Earlier today, the Skype app had appeared in the App Store before disappearing. We're pleased to say it appears to be here to stay now.

Sony PlayStation Vita to double as PS3 controller? Posted: 02 Aug 2011 06:57 AM PDT
Sony PS Vita to support PS3 controller capabilities? The upcoming Sony PlayStation Vita handheld games console might feature as a stand-in PS3 controller for a range of games, new reports from a Sony representative have suggested.
Speaking at a recent developers conference R&D manager of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Phil Rogers revealed the Vita will double as a PS3 accessory.
He added: "You can run software on both devices and use the network to sync the game states. And that's pretty good, because you then have the processing power of PS3 doing that work, Vita [doing] fancy graphics – however you want to do it. You're not sacrificing the PS3′s CPU to be able to have a rich experience on Vita."
Reports earlier this week suggested that the Sony PlayStation Vita release date is being readied for October 28th after Blockbuster stock materials seemingly leaked the console’s arrival.

Google Chrome now second most popular UK browser Posted: 02 Aug 2011 04:41 AM PDT
Thanks to super-fast browsing and those nifty TV adverts Chrome is chasing Internet Explorer Google Chrome has beaten the competition to become the second most popular internet browser in the UK, second only to Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
According to web metrics firm Statcounter the browser captured 22 per cent of users in the UK, beating Firefox in third place and truly trumping Safari with it's 9 per cent share in the UK user base.
With the browser catching up fast, Microsoft will surely be looking to find new ways at making their browser more appealing because while still in the top spot, this is in part down to the fact that Internet Explorer comes pre-installed on almost all the computers sold in this country.
Boasting super-quick browsing and a minimal footprint on your hard drive Chrome is the first product by Google to be advertised on British TV, showing off a querky but interesting take on how a browser operates.

Battlefield 3 to become Andy McNab book Posted: 02 Aug 2011 04:00 AM PDT
Andy McNab, the ex-SAS advisor in all things war-related is apparently putting Battlefield 3 onto the pages. A blog devoted to all things Battlefield 3 has discovered the listing of a Battlefield book on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble, prompting specualtion as to it's contents and purpose.
The 400-page book is set to be released on the same date as the game and is listed as being co-written by DICE member Patrick Bach as well as ex-SAS soldier and published author, Andy McNab.
It's not as yet clear as to the contents of the book, although speculation is suggesting it could be a 'making of' or in fact the novel of the single-player campaign.
The game itself has been causing quite a stir with the revelation of the new Frostbite engine and it's potentially chaotic multiplayer, becoming a fast contender to beating Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the game of the year.
What do you think, will Battlefield 3 be able to beat Call of Duty:MW3? Let us know what you think by heading over to the T3 Readers Poll and have your say. After that why not head over to Facebook and Twitter to continue the debate.

Duke Nukem Forever 'most disappointing' game release Posted: 02 Aug 2011 03:52 AM PDT
Duke Nukem Forever has been voted the most disappointing game release of 2011, beating Dragon Age II and LA Noire
Duke Nukem Forever has been voted the most disappointing gaming release of the past 12 months, snatching the unwanted gong from other worthy winners such as Dragon Age II and LA Noire.
Following a 15 year wait, gamers were seemingly left bitterly disappointed by the arrival of Duke Nukem Forever with 41 per cent of 1,671 gamers questioned by comparison website Playr2, describing it as the ‘most disappointing release’ of the past year.
Dragon Age II came in second place, followed by Crysis II, LA Noire and Brink.
Completing the top 10 list of games which disappointed during the past 12 months were Killzone 3, Dead Space II, Need for Speed: Shift 2, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – Fate of Two Worlds.
“Given all the bad reviews that surrounded the release of Duke Nukem Forever, it wasn’t surprising to see it clinch the top spot as the most disappointing game for the past 12 months,” Simon Kilby founder of Play2r said. “I think fans and reviewers alike felt let down by the storyline and graphics, with it failing to impress many.”
What was your most disappointing game of the past 12 months? Did it make this list’s top ten? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

HTC Evo 3D will land on Vodafone Posted: 02 Aug 2011 03:04 AM PDT
Taiwanese tech giant doesn't confirm UK release, however. Last week’s news that Vodafone was set to ditch plans to release the forthcoming HTC Evo 3D were met with incredulity. But now it seems the Taiwanese mobile maker will be partnering with the network to sell its 3D-centric smartphone.
In a statement, HTC said Vodafone would be releasing the next-gen handset in “six major European countries”. However, it did not specifically mention a UK release. Seeing as Blighty is one of the most important smartphone markets going, surely Vodafone wouldn’t choose to release it on the continent but not here?
The Evo 3D has garnered plenty of attention since its announcement. Its 3D screen will be capable of screening three dimensional flicks via HTC Watch, as well as packing in the latest versions of Android and HTC Sense.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Australian sales stopped following Apple lawsuit Apple has won a legal battle with Samsung that will see the Samsung Galaxy S II manufacturer unable to sell the latest version of its Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia.
The latest twist in a longstanding legal dispute comes just days ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 UK release date which is set for this Thursday, August 4th.
Official unveiled at Mobile World Congress back in February, the Samsung Galaxy S II was given a complete design overhaul in the wake of the iPad 2 arrival dropping millimetres from its form factor and losing its 8-megapixel in favour of a slimmer lower-res model.

Modern Warfare 3 to beat Battlefield 3 says T3 poll Posted: 02 Aug 2011 02:37 AM PDT
There can be only one, and according to you, it's CoD, just. Quite simply, we asked you yesterday which game will be better, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3, and already we've had a staggering response, 72,883 votes in all.
At time of writing we can confirm that it is in fact the latest in the Call of Duty series that you think will be the better of the two, grabbing 52 per cent of the votes with 38,297 collective seals of approval.
With 47% however Battlefield 3 is not far behind, most probably aided by anticipation for the new Frostbite engine which was wowing both PC and console users at E3 this year.
Of course with its trademark cinematic gameplay and storyline, Call of Duty has once again laid down the gauntlet for blockbuster action, something which Battlefield will have to match, if not exceed.
With the poll still open it's fair to say this is not the final call, so head over and vote which you think will be better.
Poll: Battlefield 3 vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
It's a debate thats had gamers all over at loggerheads, but which is truly better? Join the debate on Facebook and Twitter.

Samsung Galaxy S II retains its crown as the UK's most popular smartphone outselling the Apple iPhone 4 New figures released by the uSwitch Mobile Tracker have revealed that the Samsung Galaxy S II has outsold the iPhone 4 and a flurry of HTC handsets to become the UK’s highest selling handset for the third consecutive month.
With Samsung confirming the Galaxy S II sold more than 5 million units in its opening 85 days the dual-core smartphone has maintained its position as the UK’s most popular handset outselling the iPhone 4 into second position and eclipsing five separate HTC handsets that helped make up the UK’s top 10 handsets.
Whilst the original Samsung Galaxy S rose three places to become the UK’s third most popular handset in June, the Samsung Galaxy Ace climbed five places ninth in the charts. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 was RIM’s sole representative in the top 10 lining up in fifth.
Last week Samsung confirmed the existence of the Samsung Galaxy S II White with the lighter toned handset to land on September 1st sporting the same 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and 8-megapixel camera as its black hued sibling.

Apple iCloud.com beta opens up Posted: 02 Aug 2011 02:22 AM PDT
Chance for developers to get busy with forthcoming cloud storage service. Apple has thrown open the virtual doors to its iCloud.com beta, allowing developers to get to grips with the MobileMe replacement. Devs can now sync contacts, calendars, mail, iWork and track their iPhone via iCloud.com.
The service itself isn’t due to launch until the release of iOS 5, widely expected to break out of beta in September. It comes alongside the new iCloud service, which will let Apple users store media in the cloud and sync it across different devices seamlessly.
On top of the beta release, Apple has also revealed iCloud storage costs for US punters. 10GB costs $20, 40GB $40 and 50GB $100. Users get 5GB free and stuff purchased from iTunes doesn’t count against storage space.

App hits App Store, but is then promptly pulled because of 'premature release'. Skype for iPad has finally landed. The VoIP app has been a long time coming to Apple’s best-selling slate, and sneaked out last night, before being pulled by Skype, saying it ‘went live prematurely’.
However, the web calling giant says the app will be back soon. And with it will come an iPad-centric UI which can handle breezy contact access, phone calls and video. What’s more, you can even use instant messaging while you’re on a video call.
The iPad 2 gets the full gamut of functionality, while the original tab can only receive video, seeing as it doesn’t have a front-facing camera.
We’ll be keeping our eyes on the App Store today to check just when the Skype app returns. And rest assured that when it does rock up, you’ll be the first to know. Check back here or take a look at our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nintendo 3DS in-game purchases primed Posted: 01 Aug 2011 11:41 PM PDT
Aim to extend life of top-end games with quality downloadable content. Nintendo is set to bring in-game purchases to the 3DS later this year. That’s according to head honcho Satoru Iwata, who revealed the news during an earnings conference call late last week.
Iwata said that the system would be rolled out to developers by the end of 2011, letting them figure out how it’ll work in practice. However, he was keen to insist that Nintendo would only allow top extras, like new levels, to be sold.
What’s more, it seems a similar system will be available of the Wii U, which is due to land in spring on next next year, with Iwata confirming plans. This could finally give Ninty a decent foothold in the online gaming world, where the Xbox 360 and PS3 reign supreme.
Would you buy in-game extras on your 3DS? Tell us what you think of Nintendo’s plans on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia reveals new naming strategy Posted: 01 Aug 2011 11:26 PM PDT
The higher the number, the better the phone. Nokia has unveiled a new naming strategy for its entire portfolio of phones, ditching the C, E, N and X series monikers in favour of a numerical approach. Essentially, the higher the number, the better the phone.
The news comes just a day after Nokia revealed its first 1GHz smartphone, the Symbian Anna-packing Nokia 500. While this currently sits atop of the Symbian tree, newer phones with higher numbers look set to gazump it. Nokia’s Windows Phone handsets will surely have the highest numbers of all.
Nokia says that the move to this new numerical strategy will help users understand how good a phone really is. In an official blog post on Nokia Conversations, the company said, “People understand the logic behind ‘the bigger the number, the more you get’ philosophy.”
But with Symbian and Windows Phones both getting the same treatment, the chance for confusion is ripe. Will this really help Nokia clamber back to the top of the smartphone tree?
