CES 2011 Day Two: Mac App Store and Motorola XOOM

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Your daily round-up of all the biggest CES 2011 news, plus all the other headline-grabbing tech stories of the day

Apple Corp. opened the virtual doors to its long-awaited Apple Mac App store today. Taking the lead from the phenomenal success of the mobile-centric iOS App Store, the Mac equivalent already showcases over a 1,000 Apps and you can check out our Apple Mac App Store hands-on to see our first impressions.  A free download is only available to those on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. More news from the Cupertino Company as Apple files a patent for a gesture controlled, touch-sensitive case for its Nano.

Panasonic made a series of announcements during their CES keynote with its Panasonic Viera tablet offering topping the bill. Panny also unveiled a series of new TVs which are available up to 60-inches. Elsewhere, 12 hi-def camcorders were released and Panasonic bulked up their imaging arsenal with eight new snappers. Staying with cameras and the Olympus’ Pen E-PL2 looks to have been outed ahead of an official CES unveiling. The camera packs an MSC lens with a 28-44mm lens and ISO up to 6400, so at £500,  we’re sure there will be a few takers.

Android Tablets continued to cut a swathe through Vegas tech showcase. Motorola had a series of covetous glances cast in its direction with the Xoom tablet launched on Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Moto's 10.1-inch tablet is powered by a Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and notably features a 5.0 megapixel camera. Next up is LG, who announced their 10.1-inch LG Slate Android tablet was on the way, with that tablet-friendly OS, Android 3.0 Honeycomb on board. Last, but certainly not least is the BlackBerry 4G Playbook. Boasting the de rigueur 10.1-inch screen, the Playbook claims to deliver speeds 10 times faster than standard 3G. The downside is the lack of 4G networks in the UK means we’re unlikely to see it here in Blighty anytime soon.

Sony unsuprisingly unveiled its's usual array of sleek tech with 3D very much heading the feature queue. First up was the ‘world’s first consumer 3D camcorder' providing  double full HD with two 1080p sensors and two processors. Next up was the Bloggie camcorder which can offer HD 3D recording. Keeping with the ubiquitous 3D theme, Sony also paraded its 3D head-mounted displays, which took style pointers from Back to the Future. Another, admittedly smaller company hoping for a slice of 3D pie, was our very own Cambridge Audio, who unveiled their first 3D Blu-ray player, the 751BD which comes with the usual array of multi-media support.

Windows Phone 7 gets native Flickr app

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 10:09 AM PST

Storing your photos on Microsoft's Azure service.

It seems that barely a day goes by without a big name app arriving on Windows Phone 7. Yesterday Amazon Kindle finally turned up on the Marketplace and now a native Flickr app has also been announced.

The new native photo sharing app from Yahoo boasts a what looks like massively slick interface, a little smoother than the one available for iOS devices. You can see it in action in the video below.

The app, which will also be available for Windows 7 tablets, will allow users to sync their account with other devices, easily view your friends recent activity, as well as the feedback from your own photos.

Flickr for Windows Phone 7 and Windows 7 tablets and PCs will store photos using Microsoft's cloud-based Azure servers, which is strange considering the resources already available to Yahoo. Flickr says that using Azure helped them to get the app finished quickly.

In saying that, the software still wont be available to download until the end of this month. Once that's done, any chance Flickr could get on with building an official app for Android? HTC Sense does a decent job of syncing with your account but beyond that it's something the platform is badly lacking.

The best of the rest from the opening day of CES 2011

Tablets and 3D trinkets aside, CES 2011 is shaping up to be a classic opening to yet another year filled with tech breakthroughs, ground breaking ideas and some light-hearted optional extras. Having had a quick look-see around the halls on the opening day of the Consumer Electronics Show, here are some of the less publicised products taking our fancy...

iPad accessories galore as the must have gadget of 2010 continues its power trip adding a fest of new add-ons. Leading the iPad accessories charge, peripherals master Griffin has come out all guns blazing with the launch of multiple Apple tablet bound devices including the StompBox, an iPad connectable pedalboard that works with a range of apps to offer guitarists an effects pedal setup to run through their market leading tablets. Less tech savvy but equally stylish of the Griffin iPad offerings is the Arrowhead stand, a sleek, ultra-portable dual footed rest.

Watch specialist Casio has appeared on the floors of CES 2011 touting a range of new devices that include a prototype watch that features new Bluetooth Low Energy Wireless Technology, Why you may ask, well, so users can sync their wristwatch with their smartphones for wireless push notifications of incoming emails and a variety of other handy bits of information.

Groundbreaking tech releases are what CES is all about and living up to the challenge this year is iRiver which has unveiled the world’s highest resolution 6-inch eReader in the form of the iRiver Story HD. Offering up an impressive 768 x 1024p resolution display the Story HD also reportedly touts “faster page turns than the competition”, an important feature when you just can’t wait that extra fraction to reveal the cliff-hanger suspense.

3D Helmet cams arrive as helmet camera guru GoPro unveils the 3D Hero expansion, a dual-camera rig harness that offers budding extreme sports stars the opportunity to capture their daring escapades in that oh-so-glorious extra dimension.

Samsung flexible AMOLED displays show future at CES

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 08:27 AM PST

Samsung outs future of bendy displays

Bringing the future to reality Samsung has demoed its prototype flexible AMOLED display that could soon find itself the screen of choice for the company’s smartphone and tablet devices.

Measuring up at 4.5-inches across and less than 0.3mm thick, the bendy AMOLED display boasts a WVGA 800 x 480p resolution and can be rolled up to a cylinder just one centimetre across.

Despite being a reported five years from entering consumer available products, this malleable future tech opens up new avenues in portable devices with bendy displays increasing the possibility of clothing incorporated technology and more rugged, lifestyle-friendly gadgets.

Currently being demonstrated in a fully functional media player, Samsung’s flexible AMOLED display might have been overshadowed by the company’s unveiling of the TX100 tablet slider or the MacAir inspired ZX310 but is likely to have the greatest impact on our future tech use than any other product adorning Sammy's CES 2011 stand.

What gadgets would you like to see given a flexible display makeover? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 CES 2011 website for all the latest from the Consumer Electronics Show.

Apple patent to add touch controls to iPod casing

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 06:55 AM PST

Gesture controls to expand beyond on screen commands

Having added a multitouch capable touchscreen display to the latest generation iPod Nano, Apple looks set to remove the device’s screen entirely as a new patent reveals plans for a gesture controlled, touch-sensitive case.

Despite using a Nano in its included patent illustrations, the company’s trademark registrations pose claims of a touch-responsive shell to be adopted by devices for future iterations. Such patents are not a new development, however, with Apple filing trademarks on similar technologies as early as 2007.

The latest patent filings would see users able to control music play and track selection on a screen-less device such as the iPod Shuffle with simple gestures representing a variety of commands. According to the Apple patent, a single tap on the responsive casing would play or pause music whilst a double tap would skip playlists forward one track.

Other finger motion controls for the mooted product shells would see a triple tap skip back a single track and a clockwise or counter-clockwise circular motion increasing or decreasing the playback volume respectively. It has yet to be revealed when Apple expects any such technologies to appear on consumer products.

Could touch-sensitive cases find a way to replace touchscreens on certain devices? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest from the Apple camp.

Mac App Store opens: Hands-on screen grabs

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 06:52 AM PST

Apple turns the iPhone's best asset up to 11 for Mac owners

It’s here, after a festive period spent waiting for Apple’s Mac App store, the software shop has landed on Mac via software update. We’ve just made the leap, and here’s what’s on offer:

Once you’ve installed the App store and either set up or logged in with your Apple ID, you’ll be taken through to the ‘Featured’ section of the app store, which looks a like a cross between its iPhone counterpart and the iTunes store, as you’d probably expect.

Apple Mac App Store:
- Hands-on screens from the new software shop

You can then search for either paid or free apps, as well as by categories or for any updates. Interestingly, several categories don’t yet have images to accompany them, which is a bit of sheen missing from an otherwise sturdy looking Apple roll out. All apps allow user reviews, although at the time of writing none have been posted.

Apps fly into straight the dock as they download and install, and are ready to use in a flash. Click the link above to see our gallery of hands-on pics.

Microsoft Avatar Kinect unveiled

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 06:27 AM PST

Face tracking coming to Kinect later this year says Steve Ballmer.

Microsoft’s annual CES keynote wasn’t full of killer new announcements. But one which really did stand out was Avatar Kinect, a ramped up addition to the ace motion control camera which promises to bring even more futuristic fancies to your front room.

Leaked earlier this week, Avatar Kinect will track your facial expressions, from nods and winks through to frowns and yawns. It’ll even create a more distinct Avatar of your own mug, which you’ll then be able to send off into a virtual world of other Avatars.

Steve Ballmer talked up the idea of Avatars holding conversations with each other, meaning you need never actually chat with  a real person again. We joke, but the possibilities for virtual meet-ups are pretty much endless.

Avatar Kinect is coming in Spring and will be included as part of Xbox Live Gold membership. Yet another reason to snag the uber-selling motion camera. For more, head to our CES Microsite now.

BlackBerry 4G PlayBook unveiled

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 06:15 AM PST

Slate will work on Sprint network across the pond.

The BlackBerry PlayBook still hasn’t been pegged for release, but that’s not stopped RIM from outing a spanking new version. Dubbed the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook, it’s set to land on US network Sprint, using the company’s 4G network to deliver speeds around 10 times faster than standard 3G.

Other than the speedy 4G skills, everything else is the same as the forthcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. There’s a 1GHz processor, BlackBerry Tablet OS, Flash 10.1 support and 1GB of RAM.

RIM will only say that the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook is out this summer, meaning US gadgeteers could have a lengthy wait on their hands. A UK version is unlikely, with 4G networks still some way off on these shores.

We’ll be getting some hands-on time with the regular BlackBerry PlayBook at CES this week, so stay tuned to our CES microsite for vids and pics.

Samsung ZX310 9 Series is Mac Air alike

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 04:36 AM PST

Samsung ZX310 9Series laptop set to be slimline sensation

Samsung has launched a stunning new slimline ZX310 laptop along with a slew of other cutting-edge tech at CES2011.

The 13-inch ZX310 - - or 9-series in the US - crams in a second-gen Intel processor, alongside a ‘SuperBright Plus’ panel which the Korean tech cobbler says is twice as bright as regular displays.

There’s no doubting that the ZX310 is all about looks, with Sammy saying its been inspired by top end sports cars. It’s made from duralumin, which is twice as tough as aluminium and used in aircraft design. This thing is hard as nails as well as looking drop dead gorgeous.

Under the hood, Samsung has included a new Intel Core processor for ace visual skills, while RAM can be ramped up to an impressive 8GB. You’ll be able to nab 128GB and 256GB SSD versions, while Samsung even claims it’ll fire up in just 12 seconds thanks to its ‘Fast Start’ tech’.

Battery life will last ‘three times longer than a typical notebook’, although Samsung has been less forthcoming when it comes to actual stats to back this up. Either way, this is a machine that’s bound to be compared to Apple’s sexy MacBook Air. From first impressions, it has every chance of giving the Cupertino-made effort a run for its money.

We’ll be tracking down the Samsung ZX310 later, so stay right here for hands-on pictures and first impressions.

Apple Mac App Store to open virtual doors today

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 04:07 AM PST

Desktop and laptop bound App Store imminent

Having decided to once again forego the Las Vegas convention halls and the global hubbub of the Consumer Electronics Show, fruity tech company Apple is to open the virtual doors of the Mac App Store later today.

Following on from the phenomenal success of its mobile-centric iOS App Store, Apple will launch its desktop and laptop aimed application offerings within the next few hours with many industry analysts predicting a 9am PST rollout, 5pm here in the UK.

Speaking back in December on the upcoming Mac App Store arrival, Apple’s formidable leader Steve Jobs said: “The App Store revolutionised mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on 6 January.”

In keeping with the company’s tried and tested methods, , the Mac App Store will allow users to "browse new and noteworthy apps, find out what’s hot, view staff favourites, search categories and read customer ratings and reviews.”

To be made available as a free download for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users the official Mac App Store announcement last month revealed that ‘Lite’ or free apps will not appear on the PC-based store declaring to developers: "Your website is the best place to provide demos, trial versions, or betas of your software for customers to explore. The apps you submit to be reviewed for the Mac App Store should be fully functional, retail versions of your apps."

What apps would you like to see land in the Mac App Store when it goes live later today? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest from the upcoming Apple arrival.

Motorola XOOM tablet officially unveiled with Android 3.0

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 03:08 AM PST

XOOM zooms into CES 2011 as first Android 3.0 touting tablet

After a lengthy period of teasing Motorola has officially unveiled its first tablet device, a 10.1-inch offering dubbed the Motorola XOOM that will run Google’s tablet-centric Android 3.0 mobile operating system, Honeycomb.

First spotted when Google’s Andy Rubin took the device on stage to demo the upcoming Android 3.0 software, and later confirmed by a leaked patent filing, the newly named Motorola XOOM features a healthily plump set of specs with an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor running a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display capable of handling 16:9 cinema-spec video content.

Touted by Motorola as a product that “redefines the tablet device category by providing more ways to have fun, connect with friends and stay productive on the go”, the XOOM will attack the tablet market crown through the inclusion of a number of features omitted from Apple’s iPad. Sporting two cameras, a 2-megapixel front-facing number alongside a 720p HD video recording capable 5-megapixel snapper on the rear, the XOOM will play host to one of the iPad’s biggest pitfalls as the new Android 3.0 OS allows for full Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility.

Packing 32GB of in-built storage, expandable via SD card, Motorola’s Android powered tablet is to land in the US during the first quarter of 2011 with in-built Wi-Fi and 3G as standard. At present UK release dates and pricing have yet to be announced.

For all the latest on the goings on from CES 2011 stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 CES 2011 websites including a full hands-on with the Motorola XOOM and Google’s Android 3.0 OS.

CES 2011 Day One: Android 3.0 demoed and tablets galore

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 04:31 PM PST

Samsung unveil a 72-in LCD TV, Android 3.0 Honeycomb teased, Fujifilm line-up, LG Optimus Black

CES 2011 has kicked off in true manic fashion with the biggest players in the world of gadgets competing in tech-based brawl to see which will dominate the coming 12 months. Showcasing a flurry of exciting gadg and previously only rumoured and fantasised products, here are the highlights from the opening day of the Vegas convention halls:

Sony Ericsson has unveiled its new flagship mobile handset in the form of the Sony Erisson Xperia Arc. Teased to the public ahead of Sony's CES opening conference, the sleek, slightly curved device is set to rock a 4.3-inch 854 x 480p screen, 1Ghz Qualcomm processor and somewhat surprisingly Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb has broken cover with Google prematurely pulling the wrappers off its upcoming tablet-friendly operating system via a tasty teaser video. Previously demoed by Andy Rubin on the soon to be launched Motorola tablet, the Honeycomb OS is set to bring a more refined user interface to Android's larger deviced users.

The B&W Zeppelin is back with an added kick as Bowers and Wilkins add Apple's AirPlay technology to the iconic iPod dock for a range of new wireless streaming features.

Sharp tablet expands its horizons as the company unveil the Galapagos tablets are to be given a global rollout over the coming year with magazine and newspaper subscriptions to be made available via the company's e-bookstore. Elsewhere on the Sharp front and there are a bevy of new 3DTVs coming from the firm including the 70-inch LE935.

LG pushes 3D as it announces the upcoming launch of new 3DTVs and Blu-ray players, highlight of which is the company's new 4.3-inch glasses-free portable 3DTV. On the larger, home-bound front, LG has announced a range of 50- and 60-inch Plasma 3DTVs that, through a downloadable app, will allow iPhone users to use their smartphones as the unit's primary remote control.
