Nintendo 3DS battery life only 3-5 hours

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:38 AM PST

Short battery life and lengthy recharges could spell trouble for Nintendo 3DS.

Along with the grim (and unfounded) murmurs about its 3D screen's effect on your eyes, the other rumour plaguing the Nintendo 3DS' release was that its battery life could never compare to those of its predecessors. Now we can report it for sure: gaming time on a fully charged 3DS will be between three and five hours, or five to eight hours if playing an old DS title on the new handheld.

This puts the 3DS, with its adjustable, glasses-free 3D effect, firmly in last place in the battery life stakes when compared with the older DS models, with the DSi XL clocking in at between thirteen and seventeen hours, and even the original Nintendo DS managing to go at least ten without gasping for a wall-socket.

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata warned of the drop in battery life back in October, saying that "it is inevitable that the Nintendo 3DS will be a device which requires more frequent charging than the Nintendo DS." Charging which itself takes anywhere up to three and a half hours. Yikes.

The extra juice is required not only for the 3DS' 3D visuals but also for its WiFi connection, which Nintendo have previously said will be used for updating the 3DS remotely and for fighting piracy.

Razer shows off new Xbox 360 Onza controller

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 03:41 AM PST

Another victory for 360 owners in the battle against n00bs.

This year's CES has had a lot for gamers to get excited about: a 3D gaming laptop from Alienware, Apple's super-retro iCade and AMOLED TVs just peeking over the horizion. But Xbox 360 owners have something more immediate and affordable to take away from CES 2011: the Razer Onza controller for Xbox 360.

Top on the list of upgraded features on the Onza are analogue sticks that can be tightened or loosened to increase the resistance of each stick, making aiming more accurate. Every button on the controller is completely customisable and can be remapped as the player likes, and the controller is available with a non-slip rubber coating which provides "optimal grip even if your hands get sweaty." Lovely.

The Razer Onza, in the tradition of gaming mice, lacks wireless and instead connects to your Xbox 360 via a 15-foot USB cable. It's also compatible driver-free with PCs, for those whose n00b-pwning prowess cannot be constrained to just one platform.

No word on whether or not PS3 owners can expect a similar device in the future, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. The Onza for 360 and PC is available for pre-order on January 17th, for £35 for the standard edition and £45 for the "Tournament" edition (with the adjustable analogue sticks and the anti-sweaty-hands coating).

Apple iPad 2 to be announced on February 1st?

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 03:01 AM PST

Web guru Kevin Rose reckons a February 1st announcement for Apple's iPad 2.

CES has brought us a fairly convincing mock-up of Jobs & Co's iPad follow-up, but Apple are, as always, keeping schtum about when we can expect it to arrive.

Step up Digg founder, Apple prophet and T3's 80th-most-influential-person-in-tech Kevin Rose, who posted the on his blog at kevinrose.com: "I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next "3-4 weeks", possibly Tuesday February 1st."

Rose, well-known for his previous Apple predictions, also wrote that the iPad 2 will feature front and rear-facing cameras and a higher resolution display (although apparently not a retina display as found on the iPhone 4).

Hardly groundbreaking revelations, but logical steps for Apple's next tablet. Whether we'll get anything else out of the iPad 2 may, then, be revealed February 2nd.
