CES 2011 Day Three: iPad 2 spotted and HTC 4G phones

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Your daily roundup of all the biggest CES 2011 news, plus all the other headline-grabbing tech stories of the day

Apple’s Mac App store got off to a flying start with over one million downloads in its first 24 hours of business. This was despite the attentions of hackers trying to disrupt Steve Jobs’ red-letter day by finding a way to download Apps for gratis. You imagine the current 1000 free and paid-for apps are going to swell somewhat in the coming months. In more fruity news from Apple, word is spreading that 50,000 iTunes accounts were up for sale on TaoBao, the Chinese equivalent of eBay. This security lapse is despite Apple upping its security features and warning users to protect their data.

Apple’s iPad has had its successor spotted, allegedly. Although not present at the giant CES shindig, Apple accessories are ubiquitous and some eagle-eyed Apple fan boys spotted this mock up of the iPad 2 complete with a rear-facing camera and larger speaker grill and a slimmed-down design. Interesting. Continuing the game of hide and seek for sightings of the iPhone 5, these new pencil drawings have been spotted in the wild. The drawings show very similar design to iPhone 4, but we’re sure Jobs and co. will have fixed the death grip issues, won’t they?

Sony’s PlayStation phone has finally been uncloaked from its veil of secrecy with a new hands-on spotted in China. It looks like the PSP phone packs Android, a 4-inch LCD and 5Mp camera and when you strap on its awesome gaming skills, well you have some piece of kit. A Qualcomm Snapdragon processor has even been mooted. In other gaming news, there have been worrying noises coming out about Kinect and the feared Xbox red ring of death. Even though it has announced shifting 8 million Kinect units, overheating and other console-crippling issues have been thrown at the Big M. As for Microsoft, well they’re denying any correlation between the two issues. None whatsoever.

HTC's 4G fest. HTC have announced three new 4G phones at CES. The HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Inspire 4G and HTC Evo Shift 4G. Both the Thunderbolt and Inspire tote extremely similar specs to our very own HTC Desire HD, with the difference being the Thunderbolt boast sa front-facing 1.3Mp camera for lots of Skype-based fun. The HTC Evo Shift is a dead-ringer for the Desire Z, complete with sliding keyboard, while a mid-range HTC Freestyle has also been launched. In more phone news, Motorola has laid down the gauntlet to all comers with the Motorola Atrix which they claim is the world’s most powerful mobie. It’s hitting the UK later in 2011 on Orange.

Also at CES 2011: iCade iPad gaming and Alienware 3D

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:14 AM PST

The best of the rest from the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show

Tablets and 3D TVs aside, CES 2011 is shaping up to be a classic opening to yet another year filled with tech breakthroughs, ground breaking ideas and some light-hearted optional extras. Having had a quick look-see around the halls on the opening day of the Consumer Electronics Show, here are some of the less publicised products taking our fancy...

Alienware goes 3D with the unveiling of its first 3D capable gaming laptop the M17x. Sporting a 17-inch screen and a choice of Intel’s new i5 or i7 processors the M17x is set to launch across the UK from January 10th with a hefty starting price of £1,799.

Star Wars Blu-rays are no longer secluded to a galaxy far, far away as the high-definition renditions of the full film saga are to land from September. Packing in all the Death Star destroying, Wookie hollering goodness, Darth Vader himself took to the stage to announce the imminent nine disc collection.

Small in size, hefty in nature describes the Modular Xi3 computer announced at CES this week. Packing a AMD motherboard, and up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, the Xi3 is divided into three compact sections so that it fits snugly into its micro cube-chassis.

Taking iPad gaming back to the 80’s the iCade cabinet for iPad adds an arcade air of gaming mystique. Set to be compatible with a range of upcoming vintage remakes the iCade is to hit UK shores with a £79 price tag and hours of gaming delights.

Samsung showcases largest transparent AMOLED display

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:24 AM PST

Samsung unveil more future tech AMOLED displays

Adding to the 4.5-inch flexible AMOLED display showcased at CES earlier this week, Samsung has outed the world’s largest transparent AMOLED screen.

Measuring in at 19-inch across the ‘production prototype’ transparent AMOLED display offers around 30 per cent transparency whether in use or tuned off and is touted by Samsung for future use in laptop monitors and as television screens.

Featuring a 960 x 540p resolution the 19-inch prototype, can be seen in the included image running images of a woman’s face whilst sat in front of a dolls house setup.

Due to the technology’s increased image clarity, colour contrasts, response rates and power efficiency, it is expected that AMOLED displays will make the jump from the current spate of market leaded smartphones to replace LCD and Plasma panels in larger home entertainment gadgets.

Mac App Store tops 1 million app downloads in opening day

Mac App Store overcomes hackers to top one million downloads

Following its long awaited official opening yesterday, Apple has announced that the Mac App Store has seen more than one million app downloads in its opening 24 hours of trading.

Launching with over 1,000 free and paid-for apps the Mac App Store is available as a free download for all Mac OS X Snow Leopard users and features desktop and laptop friendly applications across a number of categories including Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle and Productivity.

“We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. The Cupertino based company’s big wig went on to add: “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.”

Following on from the hugely successful App Store that supplies content for the company’s iOS devices, the Mac App Store allows users to browse available applications via new a noteworthy header as well as staff favourites and current popular downloads.

Despite these staggering opening day download figures, the opening 24 hours of the Mac App Store’s existence was not entirely plain sailing for Apple with hackers cracking open the service and finding a devastatingly simple way of downloading paid-for applications without having to pay.

iTunes accounts hacked for illegal sales in China

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 06:40 AM PST

50,000 fake iTunes accounts on sale in China

Around 50,000 hacked iTunes accounts are up for sale on TaoBao, the Chinese equivalent of eBay, with victims of credit card fraud fronting the bills for the illegally downloaded content.

With accounts available for as little as 1 yuan (10p) each, wannabe buyers are promised unlimited iTunes downloads for up to 12 hours after purchase before the fraudulent accounts are closed down.

Having recently upped its iTunes security features and warned users to protect their personal data following a number of system attacks, Apple has failed to comment on the tens of thousands of reported iTunes accounts doing the rounds in the east.

First reported by the China’s Global Times newspaper, the auctioneers of the illegally acquired accounts are touting users will be able to “go after anything they like” suggesting “software, games, movies, music and so on” be downloaded.

News of the fraudulent account sales comes on the same day it emerged that just hours after its official launch Apple’s long awaited Mac App Store has been hacked with all paid-for applications able to be downloaded for free via a simple file moving process.

Does the recent spate of breaches to the iTunes setup concern you when using the Apple service to download content? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 design drawings leaked?

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 06:21 AM PST

Antenna looks to have been moved, confirming Apple's plans to finally fix phone's killer flaw.

New design drawings of the iPhone 5 have apparently surfaced, showing off a very similar style to the current iPhone 4 model. The pics come on the back of a video earlier this week which showed new iPhone parts with the antenna breaks clearly moved to prevent ‘death grip’ issues.

GALLERY: SEE THE IPHONE 5 DESIGN DRAWINGS NOW

Apple had the clip pulled from YouTube and doubtless Steve Jobs will be none too pleased to see Jony Ive’s scribblings for the next-gen iPhone hit the web too.

The drawings suggest the next iPhone will not be that far removed from the iPhone 4, with a subtle leap similar to the shift from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS. The new phone is expected to land this summer.

Lady Gaga and Polaroid team up for Grey Label goodies

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 03:26 AM PST

New Polaroid efforts look the part.

CES product launches are generally pretty staid affairs: men in suits, a gaggle of fanboyish hacks and a windowless room are pretty much par for the course. But Polaroid is clearly none-to-keen on this tiresome approach.

A year after the camera clan wheeled out Lady Gaga as its Creative Director, its returned with the diminutive diva in tow and brought along some stunning new products, dubbed the Grey Label Line.

Undoubtedly the coolest thing in the range is the pair of GL20 Camera Glasses, donned by Gaga herself. They rock a Polaroid snapper as well as two LCDs that cover your peepers. The Lady then took a snap of the CES crowd and printed off her handiwork on a new GL10 printer using Polaroid’s Zink printing tech.

But our favourite is definitely the GL30 camera. Its design is stunning and it’s enough to make us believe that Polaroid is finally back from the wilderness after a rocky few years.

Apple Mac App Store hacked within hours of launch

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 03:19 AM PST

Crafty hack makes all Mac App Store apps free to get

Just hours after Apple opened the virtual doors on its new desktop and laptop based Mac App Stores the system has been hacked with users able to download the full array of paid-for apps free of charge.

Despite the team of hackers originally responsible for pirating their way to free Mac-based applications announcing they would not be making their hacking software public until next year out of respect to developers, a number of mimickers have revealed online guides on how to trick the newly launched online store into coughing up free applications.

In what appears to be a surprisingly simplistic process, Mac App Store users can fool the system into believing it has purchased paid-for applications by transferring three files from legally downloaded free applications into the content information of yet to be downloaded purchasable content. We must remind you that such practices fall on the shady side of the law and are not recommended or condoned.

The mysterious man behind the original hack announced: “We don't want to devalue applications and frustrate developers." He added: "Most of the applications that go on the Mac App Store will be decent, they'll be pretty good. Apple isn't going to put crap on the App Store as soon as it gets released. It'll probably take months for the App Store to actually have a bunch of crappy applications and when we feel that it has a lot of crap in it, we'll probably release [the software].”

Officially launched yesterday with more than 1,000 applications already available, the Mac App Store was dated for arrival back in December with Apple’s head honcho Steve Jobs announcing: “The App Store revolutionised mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on 6 January.”

PlayStation Phone: new hands-on throws up more details

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST

5MP camera, super bright screen and new hands-on snaps.

Sony has clearly given up all pretense of hiding the PlayStation Phone. A new hands-on in China has just served up a welter of new details and images, showing the Android-packing phone in all its glory.

With a whacking great 4-inch LCD, with 854x480 resolution, and a 5Mp camera, this looks like it’ll be a natty phone even without its gaming skills. There’s microSD support also, as well as chatter about a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor keeping things speedy under the hood.

There’s also signs of an app called “PlayStation Pocket”, suggesting this is the place where you’ll snag games for the blower. What these will be isn’t clear just yet, but with a launch date pegged for Mobile World Congress, we won’t have long to wait.

Can’t wait for the PlayStation Phone? Or think it’s total bobbins? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iPad 2 spied at CES

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 02:42 AM PST

Camera, larger speaker and tweaked design all in evidence at accessories stand.

Apple doesn’t bother itself with CES. But that doesn’t mean the iPad 2 isn’t causing a stir out in Las Vegas, with mock-ups of the forthcoming slate sequel making an appearance at accessories makers’ stands.

The pic here, snapped by iLounge, gives a pretty good idea of what we can expect from the iPad 2. There’s a rear-facing camera, larger speaker grill (a dead cert if leaked case designs are to be believed) and a flatter design.

The mock-up from Gopod Mobile has been used to show off a foldable rechargeable battery pack. It follows other iPad 2 fakes at the show, with one by case maker Dexim causing a stir at the start of the week.

Kinect issues spark red ring of death as sales top 8 million

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 02:41 AM PST

Red ring returns as Microsoft shifts 8 million Kinect units

Microsoft’s recently released controller-free motioning gaming peripheral Kinect has reignited the company’s issues with the dreaded Xbox red ring of death, new reports suggest.

Attributed to many varying issues throughout the years including over-heating problems, the red ring of death, which is estimated to have affected close to 30 per cent of all Xbox 360 consoles since launch, appears to have returned with a number of new Kinect owners claiming the console-crippling issues appeared after just a few short uses of the must-have Christmas peripheral.

Believed to affect the older white Xbox 360 consoles as apposed to the newer ‘Slim’ models, users of Kinect have reported that using the motion gaming add-on caused irreversible damage to their Xbox consoles within a few hours of first use.

Flatly denying claims of a link between Kinect and the increased red ring issues, Microsoft has declared in an official statement: "There is no correlation between the three flashing red lights error and Kinect. Any new instances of the three flashing red lights error are merely coincidental."

Speaking during his keynotes speech to open the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed that more than 8 million Kinect units had been sold across the world in the first 60 days from launch.

Have you faced any issues with the red ring of death since adding Kinect to your gaming setup? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
