Tech Today: iTunes Match arrives, Xbox 360 rules at E3

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 04:14 PM PDT

On one of the busiest tech days in living memory. Here's what happened in the States on an action packed Monday evening, from E3 and WWDC

iTunes Match finally brings Apple music streaming
The headline news from Apple's WWDC keynote was the launch of the iTunes Match segment of the new iCloud platform. For a remarkably cheap $25 a year, Apple will scan your iTunes library and match them up with the corresponding tracks from the iTunes Music Store. It'll then give you the same privileges as if you've bought them from the iTunes and upgrade them to 256Kbps and make them available for download on any of your iOS devices.

iTunes in the Cloud
iCloud will link up with 9 apps (including Contacts, Calendar, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Mail and Photos) but another fine piece of functionality is iTunes in the Cloud. Now, anything you buy from iTunes will be automatically available to download on all of your iOS devices, completely free.

iOS 5 will arrive in the autumn with the iPhone 5?
Apple also lifted the lid on iOS 5 today, but won't be making it available until the fall, presumably to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 5 hardware. iOS 5 looks absolutely monumental though. iMessage might spell the end for BBM, while Notifications have been revamped, Twitter has been baked-in, and Safari has been given a much-needed overhaul. We just wish we had it now!

Xbox dominates day one at E3
Away from the Apple furore, gaming fans are having their own mid-year Christmas with the E3 gaming expo in LA. Microsoft dominated day one with news that Xbox game saves will now be stored on the cloud, there'll be a new Halo trilogy of games and there'll be Kinect support for FIFA, Madden and Tiger. On top of that there's another new Xbox experience and Live TV coming to your console later this year. Oh, and there were Modern Warfare 3 and Tomb Raider demos.

HTC Flyer gets a minor update
You'd have to be insane to release something major against the E3 and Apple press tidal wave, which is why HTC announced a minor software update for the HTC Flyer, which promises to improve performance. Although an improvement is undoubtedly a good thing, the people want Honeycomb, HTC

Halo Combat Evolved anniversary edition inbound

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:38 PM PDT

Master Chief gets remastered for a new generation of Halo fans.

Bungie might have moved on from the series after Reach, but Master Chief's battle against the forces of the alien Covenant aren't over by a long thread if Microsoft have anything to say about it. Not only did we hear from E3 today that Microsoft are launching another trilogy of Halo games featuring the mean green space marine, but also that they will be re-releasing the original Halo: Combat Evolved, with updated graphics and a half dozen recreated favourite multiplayer maps.

Fans of the original needn't worry, according to the bods at Microsoft - the physics engine is set to be exactly the same as the one found in the first Halo, meaning vehicles will still handle the same, weapons will keep their effects and Covenant corpses will still fly through the air in loyal tribute to the original.

The announcement of the remastered Halo will be released on November 15th, and you can check out the trailer below. In the meantime, stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest coverage from E3 in L.A.

FIFA 12 will be a 'game for the world'

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:24 PM PDT

EA Sports at E3 wouldn't be complete without a FIFA update, and this year was no exception.

EA Sports has showcased its latest FIFA 12 at the E3 conference in LA, showing off new online features and gameplay technologies.

Starting with gameplay the new incarnation will have three new features in place; Tactical Defending, Precision Dribbling and the Player Impact Engine. The Tactical Defending feature requires the player to put more effort into completing a succesful and stylish tackle with timing and aiming being both key to success. Precision Dribbling follows a similar route, enabling the player a more accurate method of passing and running with the ball, while the Player Impact Engine is a physics engine which makes every players movement more realistic.

The second big announcement was the EA Football Club, an online service which is cross-platform and adds a completely new social and competative dimension to FIFA online. By choosing a team you can then watch your team progress through challenges and against your friends online, while showing you stats of how well you're doing.

According to EA Sports this is just the iceberg, with more features to be announced as the months go by. This is certainly the first step by a games publisher to create a service which is compatible between devices. Either way to see a full round-up of the new features, check out the video below.

Arkham City: Villains on the loose, Catwoman playable

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:01 PM PDT

The streets of Gotham are a playground for the Dark Knight in Arkham City.

Exclusive footage from E3 has revealed first glimpses of Batman's return to Arkham, this time hot in pursuit of a cadre of comic book supervillains sprung from Arkham Asylum at the end of the last game.

Confirmed to be making an appearance in this latest game are the eponymous Penguin, maniacal chancer Two Face, The Riddler, serial killer Victor Zasz and, of course, the grinning face of Gotham's criminal underworld himself, the Joker.

But Arkham Asylum isn't all about dishing out rubber-bodysuited justice. This time, players switch between fighting crime as Batman and causing mischief as Catwoman, who marks the series' first playable character other than the Dark Knight himself.

Clips of gameplay revealed at E3 show that Catwoman boasts a whole new combat style of her own, leaping and twisting through crowds of burly henchmen slashing at them with steel claws and tripping them up into the air with flicks of her whip. While the super-macho Bruce Wayne might be able to go toe-to-toe with Gotham's hardest criminals, the slender Catwoman - more Michelle Pfeifer than Halle Berry - has to outmaneuver lumbering aggressors, deploying claws and caltrops to disable opponents.

The combat system from either character's perspective looks just as fast and fluid as in Arkham Asylum, with both Batman and Catwoman chaining together attacks, blocks and counters to dispatch crowds of enemies. Of course, tackling Gotham's underbelly head-on is only half the story, with Batman retaining his x-ray-style detective vision and stealth takedowns for a more tactical approach to dispensing law and order.

One marked change from Arkham Asylum is the openess of the environment - unlike its predecessor, Arkham City is a grimy, neon-lit playground from the get-go. As Batman explores the rooftops and city streets, new objectives will present themselves which players can choose to accept. Batman can still glide from elevated positions, making for easy exploration, but he can also now dive toward the ground to gain momentum before swooping up or into unsuspecting enemies for an extra-powerful takedown.

We'll have more on Batman: Arkham City as we see more at E3. In the meantime, check out the trailer below, and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest announcements as they happen.

OSX Lion, iCloud and iOS5 - T3 readers respond

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:56 PM PDT

iPhone 5 fails to appear at WWDC but software arrives in spades

The dust has settled, and another loaded Apple WWDC keynote from Steve Jobs has passed.

Apple has fired off a series of software challenges to the rest of the industry in just a few minutes – iOS5 with it’s Android-esque notification bar and OTA support, OSX Lion and iCloud’s terminal de-tethering of Apple devices.

Reaction so far has been positive, with s few exceptions. Below is a flavour of some of the best –

Looks like the end of tethering. Icon with a massive pair of scissors cutting a cable just appeared on the Keynote @Stevemills4

iMessage > the slayer of Blackberry Messenger. Kids worldwide rejoice. @Ch3ukl1

Thanks for the efficient coverage of wwdc! You kept me totally upto date. Looking forward to iOS5! @ankisubhan

iTunes Match > scans music library and adds them to your iCloud doo-da. And. Will upgrade your crappy songs to 256k /sweet!!/
@sbobby

I've missed the iCloud announcement. Is it basically a slightly evil, blander Spotify? @charltonbrooker

If iCloud is free and MobileMe is dead - what happens to the subscription people have paid for MMe?
@plummers

Ok, everything Steve is saying is pointing towards Apple redefining the home media server. @Elansyssa

Bing voice search coming to Xbox 360

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:28 PM PDT

Tap on that Xbox 360 controller no more...

Microsoft announced that it will be integrating its Bing search engine into the Xbox 360 which will allow you to use your voice to search for products, videos, music, games and more.

Revealed at Microsoft's E3 2011 press conference, Xbox 360 users can also look forward to Xbox Live TV with the UK partnership with Sky set to strengthen bringing voice recognition support for news, sports and local channels.

Microsoft also announced that YouTube will be integrated into Xbox LIVE giving you access to 'Web original' content like gaming tips and the latest videos, all of which you can control/search using your voice.

Microsoft confirmed it is also adding more content partners for its on-demand services such as Zune, ensuring that you never have to look anywhere else for content.

While a host of new Kinect games and a certain Halo 4 stole the show, Microsoft has also significantly upped the ante in the bid to deliver the entire entertainment package.

Like the sound of Bing voice search for the Xbox 360? Is YouTube a great addition to Xbox LIVE? Let us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

Kinect is star at Xbox E3 conference

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:20 PM PDT

The message we certainly got from Xbox's E3 conference was this: If you don't have Kinect, you're missing out.

According to Microsoft and Xbox, this will be the year for Kinect, and not just for kids either. The main focus has in actual fact been on putting Kinect in some of the Xbox's more hardcore titles such as Fable, Mass Effect and Ghost Recon.

Mass Effect 3
This was one of the more impressive Kinect demo's we saw at the conference. Instead of going for all out Kinect control, what Mass Effect 3 is planning on doing is enhancing the current experience. By adding voice-recognition you can use your voice to control the flow of dialogue when talking to other characters. This is then also used when you engage in combat by being able to command your team through the voice control. It's incredibly slick and definitely doesn't appear to take over the experience, rather letting you spend more time on the tactical side of things than feeling like you're doing too many things at once.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
Definitely one of our favourite demo's here at T3 Towers the Ghost Recon demo actually included very little actual gameplay, instead going for a nicely melodramatic trailer featuring opera singing vocals and incredibly satisfying headshots. While this was all nice and dandy it was what followed that impressed us most. Called Gunsmith it's a Kinect-based feature that allows you to customise your weapon to an astounding degree. By using Kinect gestures that bordered on a 'Minority Report' level of cool you can pull your gun apart, tell the game to select certain features then using your body as the weapon, take it out onto the test range.

Ryse
Very little is known about this game from CryTek and to be blunt, from the incredibly short trailer, it's still hard to know much. What we do know is that it's based in Ancient Rome and at present has been solely controlled by Kinect, showing very responsive attack gestures and movements. As soon as we know more you'll know more.

Forza Motorsport 4
This was probably one of the more well-known Kinect titles that was announced having been previewed late last week. By uitilising head-tracking and voice control you can look around inside the car cabin as you drive and control the game through voice as well.

Fable: The Journey
Fable's latest incarnation will utilise Kinect in perhaps a more traditional way than the others by letting you use your hands to control the reigns of a horse or caravan (as shown in the demo) or to cast spells. Focusing on the story that Fable's world is dying, you play a tribal dweller who can harness magic and create weapons all through using Kinect. It looks very similar to the style used the latest Harry Potter game but of a much more advanced nature.

Xbox Dashboard
Last but not least we have the Dashboard and OS itself on the Xbox 360. With a totally new-look interface the Kinect-friendly Dashboard now has full voice-control, increased gesture controls and Microsoft bing search capability. By using bing and voice-control the idea is that you can search anything within the Xbox Live universe and download or play it straight away.

Impressed by what's on offer or is Kinect still just a gimmick for you? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Skyrim will have 300+ hours of gameplay, 150+ dungeons

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:15 PM PDT

Bethesda Game Director reveals the size and scope of Skyrim.

According to Game Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda, Todd Howard, the developers of the sequel to 2006's best-selling Oblivion have "stopped counting" the number of hours players will be able to invest in the world of Skyrim.

Talking viewers through exclusive footage shown on E3 partners Gametrailers.com, Howard revealed that the gameworld will be roughly the same size as that of Oblivion, but with much more variation in the landscape. Players will track through seven different environments across Skyrim, from underground caves and dungeons (of which Howard estimates there are "more than 150") to rolling tundra complete with free-roaming wooly mammoths.

The big pull of Skyrim is, of course, the dragons, making their return to the mythical world of Tamriel after centuries of absence. According to Howard, the dragons' appearances in Skyrim will be unscripted and will occur from early on in the game, with the creatures swooping down to pick off friends and foes alike, tossing them into the air or blasting them with fire and ice.

Players in the game won't be totally defenceless against Skyrim's leathery fire-breathers, however, with the inhabitants of Skyrim now able to dual wield any two single handed weapons in the game, rather than the standard Oblivion sword and shield combo. Players who favour magic over swordplay will be pleased to discover that the dual wielding also extends to Skyrim's arsenal of magic spells, letting aggressive players unleash chains of attacks with weapons, magic, or mix and match the two.

The final tool in the player's arsenal are the still-mysterious "dragon shouts", hugely powerful spells that can, as shown in the footage, rain lightning from the sky to decimate groups of weaker enemies or bring down dragons in flight. To use them, however, players will have to quest around the expanse of Skyrim and learn the secrets of their power.

There are several games vying for the title of biggest game at E3 2011, but from what we're hearing from the bods at Bethesda, Skyrim has a serious claim to stake.

We'll hear more about Skyrim as E3 progresses. The game will be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11th this year. Check out the official gameplay trailer below.

Apple iMessage launch will go head-to-head with BBM

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:04 PM PDT

Apple iMessage launch threatens to take a bite out of BlackBerry's BBM pie.

Apple today unveiled iMessage, a new data-based push messaging service for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch as a direct rival to BlackBerry's popular BBM.

The new "BBM for iOS 5" service - announced at Apple's annual developer's conference WWDC 2011 - lets users send text messages, photos, video and contacts to anyone on an iOS device. It works over WiFi and 3G, supports group chats and integrates with the new iOS 5 Notification Centre to deliver instant updates on incoming new messages. The instant chat app will also notify users when messages have been delivered and read.

The news will make RIM bosses sleep a little less easy tonight, despite the fact that they've already had to contend with BBM competitors on the app market, including Kik and PingChat! These apps enable you to chat across Apple and Android devices and have led to rumours that RIM might make BBM available on other platforms also.

One thing is certain, with the iMessage launch Apple will have tooled up its iOS devices with one of the most often quoted reasons for buying a BlackBerry over an iPhone.

Apple has pinned the iMessage release along with the release of its new mobile operating system, iOS 5, this Autumn.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 gets E3 debut

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 11:07 AM PDT

The latest in the franchise has made an explosive appearance stealing the no.1 slot in the Xbox Future Revealed conference.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has made a extravagant debut at E3 by showing off almost 10 minutes of gameplay footage at the start of the Xbox: Future Revealed Conference.

Two trailers have so far been seen at E3, the first showed a special forces team take down a Russian submarine by planting underwater mines and then storming the crippled behemoth. Once above the water it was clear that this was set in one of their key locations New York, and it had most certainly seen better days. The city had been turned into a battleground with fighters up above and fleets of ships in the river, all of which seemed to be exploding.

In the second of the trailers more of the new features found in CoD:Modern Warfare 3 could be seen. Swappable sights allows the player have multiple types of sight on the same weapon, increasing the functionality of the weapon. We also saw the return of controllable vehicles such as the Reaper Drone, allowing you to reign down destruction. Last but not least was the suggestion that environments have become more destructible, showcasing a grenade launcher taking down a satellite dish.

In what was set to be a Kinect dominated conference the game still managed to produce a few gasps after it showed the sheer scale of what was to be expected from the latest in the Call of Duty franchise.

Are you even more excited about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or holding out for one of the other games at E3? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

Halo 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary leaked

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 07:56 AM PDT

Ouch. After being so quiet there were reports that Microsoft would be announcing something big, unfortunately, they weren't planning on leaking it themselves

Halo 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition are among the titles that have been leaked by Microsoft afer it was found that a 'preview' page was mistakenly published on the Xbox homepage.

While rumous have been circling for sometime concerning a remastering of the Xbox classic it was never officially confirmed until now. As if to place a Master Chief sized cherry on top the page has also leaked that Halo 4 will be arriving under the direction of new studio 343 Industries. The page teases Halo fans by confirming the 4th incarnation is on its way but ends by saying 'But that's not all...'.

Alongside these will be the arrival of Kinect Sports Seasons 2, Gears of War 3 and the official Kinect Star Wars title, however to find out more stay logged on to T3 where we'll give you all the latest from Microsoft's official announcements at E3.

Will Halo 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary steal the show, or are Ubisoft still on track to gain the crown with Assassins Creed: Revelations? Join the debate on Facebook or Twitter.

Apple iCloud in legal battle with German company

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 06:44 AM PDT

Despite the fact it hasn't even been officially unveiled, iCloud and Apple are already in hot water.

Just hours before the iCloud service is announced in LA, Apple has apparently come under the scrutiny of the German legal system after German company Simfy said their rival product was being delayed approval by Apple until after iCloud is released.

The German company has complained to their equivalent of the British competition authority the Bundeskartellamt saying that Apple is deliberately stalling the approval of their product. Simfy say this is because their product could be seen as a rival to the iCloud service which will be announced later today.

Simfy offers a service very like that of Spotify and is only available in certain European countries. It offers over-the-air streaming of music on mobile-devices, online and on the desktop. Simfy is looking to expand this further with an app in the Mac App store, but as yet, no approval has been granted.

Nintendo Wii 2 controller with touchscreen?

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 03:25 AM PDT

Nintendo’s Wii 2, due to be announced at E3 tomorrow, is rumoured to feature a six-inch touchscreen, according to a new source.

Nikkei, a Japanese website, which has successfully predicted a number of Nintendo releases over the years, has confirmed the next Wii controller have a six-inch screen, an onboard camera, and tablet like controls.

A release date of mid-2012 has also been mooted by the website.

Other rumours have suggested games could stream directly to the touchscreen, effectively making the next generation Wii a gaming hub that can be played on a TV or the controller’s screen.

Nintendo are due to unveil the Wii 2 at a press conference at E3 in Los Angeles tomorrow evening.

iPhone app news: Instagram updated with liked photos

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:42 AM PDT

'Like' album adds a new dimension to hit photo app.

Popular social photo sharing app Instagram has updated its 'wares to include a new section dedicated to photos you've previously liked.

The free iPhone which has been a revelation among hipsters looking to assert their retro cool by adding ragged, Polaroid-esque effects of various hues to their snaps before posting them online.

Now, as well as a general speed update which keeps things ticking along at a brisk pace, developers Burbn Inc have added a way to keep all of the photos that you've liked from various users.

This was a rather empty gesture, except to pay tribute to the  noble photographer, now you can revisit your favourite shots with the "my liked photographs" tab in the profile section.

Other minor improvements include the ability to add your website name to your profile and auto complete for hashtags. The makeover isn't of the extreme variety, but Instagram is the best app of its ilk and it just got a little bit better.

WWDC 2011: Tech experts' launch predictions

Posted: 05 Jun 2011 11:40 PM PDT

WWDC 2011: iOS 5, OSX Lion and iCloud but what else is coming? UK tech experts' WWDC predictions

In a few hours, Apple will expand on the unexpected bean-spilling of its next-generation software: iOS 5, OSX Lion and iCloud at WWDC 2011 live.

It's the first time in T3's 14-year history that we can remember Apple shouting about a new product or service before its keynote, which leads us to question whether the phrase 'one more thing' may pass the lips of Steve. Who better to opine, then, than some of the the biggest names in the UK tech press. Here are their predictions and possible surprises.

Name: Shane Richmond

WWDC predictions: If iCloud is merely a service that charges you for storing music that you already own then it will be underwhelming. I think Apple will have learned from its mistakes with MobileMe and won't simply replicate the cloud music offerings from Amazon and Google. We'll see a service that combines with OSX Lion and iOS 5 to move management of all your devices into the cloud. I'm expecting apps that update automatically, wireless syncing between devices and, I hope, the ability to store all your media in the cloud - not just those you've bought from iTunes.

One more thing: I think there could a hardware surprise at the end of this keynote but I don't think it will be a new iPhone. I think we'll see an updated Time Capsule that enables the iCloud services and, perhaps, allows you to run an iOS device without linking it to a computer.

WWDC predictions: Of course we know there'll be Lion in great detail, iOS 5 and details of just how iCloud will work. I think there'll be heavy emphasis on integration of all three and how the software-hardware complete experience will become even more important, emphasising what Apple does like nobody else can. And how all these software elements will come together on the next iPhone, whenever that is...

It's always the understated elements that are the most interesting. When the first iPad was announced, almost nobody mentioned Steve Jobs's comment that 'it's all our own silicon'. But the A4 and now A5 chips have since become centre stage. Expect other ground-breakers to slip in under the radar.

One more thing: There's always one more thing. Except when there isn't. There wasn't at the iPad 2 unveil, for instance. If Mr Jobs pulls an iPhone out of his hat I'll eat mine. Instead I think it'll be: Lion will be available to download from the Mac Store. Today.

WWDC predictions: iCloud is likely to be the big story, and will put a lot of Apple's most popular software products online and accessible from any computer with a browser. You'll be able to get your music (if you've bought it from iTunes) and stream it to any device. As well as taking iTunes online, I think we could also see online versions of Keynote, Pages and Numbers. There's also likely to be the option to automatically back up the documents from your Mac to the iCloud.

The new version of iOS could also see the iPhone getting its biggest change since it was introduced, with a new look and feel. Hopefully, we'll also see Apple overhauling the notifications system.

As for the desktop, the big surprise could be that Lion, the latest version of Mac OS, is made available in the Mac App store as soon as Jobs steps off stage.

One more thing: Apps on Apple TV could be a surprise addition.

WWDC predictions: I've been following Apple's resurrection from the dormant tech giant it was to the global household name it is today. In those transformative years, we've seen it create brand new product categories, re-shape how media industries do business and completely redefine how people interact with modern technology. Our primary focus to date has been its stylish, innovative hardware. This is what built a cult.

Today's software announcement will demonstrate how all of its products (and your content) can work in unison – iOS 5 for portable devices, Lion for computing, iCloud to tie them together - without you having to think twice about it. This is what will build an army. However, if iCloud replaces MobileMe and adds wireless content syncing across all of its products (plus streaming any media from a home computer or TimeCapsule) how much will that cost? The primary function of Mobile Me (£59 a year) is/was to synchronise relatively small files such as calendars, contacts, bookmarks and email. Add megabyte-hungry MP3, MP4, photos, Apps and iWork documents to the mix and your yearly bill could be run into three figures. And what of your ISP's data restrictions?

Perhaps iOS 5 will have a Spotify-esque 'offline' mode for caching content. Perhaps the need for high-speed wireless internet connectivity everywhere will become even more pertinent. Whatever the outcome, you can be sure that the other tech megacorps will be watching closely. If the boffins at 1 Infinite Loop get this right, and manage to attract the floating voters who are still undecided whether to go Apple or Android, it could be years before their iCloud contract expires.

One more thing:
I'm torn. I'd love to see a glimpse of the iPhone 5, Retina Display iPad (see this month's issue of T3), or a brand new MacBook AirPad, but agree with my tech colleagues – if we do see any hardware, it's likely to be one that complements the iCloud ethic. Can I get a whoop, whoop for TimeCapsule 2.0? No, thought not. Can I get a standing ovation for Steve's official retirement? Quite possibly...
