Look out TomTom, because Google Maps Navigation may no longer have to rely on an internet connection to search for a new route. Dutch site All About Phones reckons that Google may be about to remove the requirement for that data connection in order to use the all-conquering GPS app.

Vodafone drop original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:32 AM PDT

Slim Samsung Galaxy Tab ends life of original design

Samsung’s original and portly Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been canned by exclusive retail partner Vodafone with the network provider opting instead to offer the revamped slim model.

Having officially unveiled the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Mobile World Congress back in February with a 10.9mm thick form factor and hefty 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera, Samsung was forced to rethink its tablet plans in the wake of the launch of the super slim Apple iPad 2.

Reacting to the release of the iPad 2 Samsung outed a revamped Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the freshly designed tablet dropping its snapper to a 3-megapixel offering in favour of an 8.6mm thick design.

Whilst Samsung had previously confirmed Vodafone would continue to stock the original, fatter, Galaxy Tab 10.1, customers of the red-hued mobile network who registered interest in the device have started to receive notifications stating the retailer will now only offer the updated model, ending the life of the original 10.1 before it hit stores.

Is there still a market for the chunkier Galaxy Tab 10.1 with its impressive snapper? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 07:58 AM PDT

App sensation Angry Birds sees update land for movie tie-in

App developer Rovio has released an update for the hugely popular Angry Birds Rio with the software release bringing 15 new levels and a new bird type to the mobile movie tie-in.

Dubbed Carnival Upheaval, the update is the second pack of additional levels to hit the Angry Birds release since the app first launched back in March with two further ‘Coming soon’ sections still awaiting additional content.

Once again targeting a band of mischievous monkeys, Angry Birds Rio Carnival Upheaval sees users firing a fleet of miffed birds this time in front of a crowd of carnival goes with levels set atop brightly coloured parade fleet.

Available as a free update to those Angry Bird fans who already have the Rio release on iOS or Android devices, the latest update allows users to play as the movie’s Blue macaw character for the first time.

Does Angry Birds still posses that magic touch or has its shine been buffed off in recent months? Share your thoughts on the mega app via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Wii U games footage taken from Xbox and PS3 releases

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 06:51 AM PDT

Nintendo confirm Wii U launch gameplay footage was taken from Xbox and PlayStation releases

Nintendo has confirmed that the gameplay footage used during its unveiling of the Nintendo Wii U was taken from its competitor’s current generation machines with content coming from Xbox 360 and PS3 releases.

Having officially revealed the Nintendo Wii U at E3 in Los Angeles with what was believed to be an insight into the upcoming console’s graphical capabilities, Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed in an interview with GameTrailers that the footage was actually of existing PlayStation and Xbox titles.

Whilst Fils-Aime was keen to stress that the Wii U will deliver Full HD 1080p graphical content that will at least match that of the current Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 consoles, the content stealing revelation will be a blow for the image of the console that is still over a year away from launch.

Unveiled a year after Nintendo outed the pocket friendly Nintendo 3DS, the Wii U was shown off with a multipurpose controller that combines a full button array around an expansive display that can mimic what appears on the connected TV or provide users with additional gaming content.

Will the Wii U be able to emulate the success of the original Wii or will its haphazard lack of direction and traditional form put users off? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Wimbledon finals confirmed as first BBC 3D broadcasts

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:48 AM PDT

Free-to-air 3D Wimbledon broadcast to mark BBC's first extra-dimension exploits

The BBC has confirmed that it is to move into the 3D broadcasting market with the finals of this year’s Wimbledon Championships to be its first foray into the extra dimension.

Set to broadcast the women’s and men’s Wimbledon finals in 3D via the BBC HD channel on Saturday July 2nd and Sunday July 3rd respectively, the free-to-air 3D broadcast will mark a first for the Beeb and a content coup over rivals Sky and its dedicated Sky 3D channel.

"We're bringing audiences a new way of getting close to the action," said Head of BBC HD and 3D Danielle Nagler on the company’s announcement of its forthcoming first 3D broadcast.

She added: "I'm sure that 3D will only add to the drama as the world's greatest players compete for the championship."

With an audience of 5.6 million tuning in to last year’s Wimbledon men’s final on the BBC and with Briton’s Andy Murray once again searching for a first major win on home soil the BBC’s Executive Sport Producer, Paul Davies, declared: “This unique 3D transmission is the latest innovation to bring to life all the tension, drama and excitement on one of the most iconic sporting arenas in the world."

Have you already adopted 3D technology into your home, will you be watching the Wimbledon finals in the extra dimension? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad app news: OnLive Player app confirmed for iPad

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:15 AM PDT

App will bring the likes of Duke Nukem Forever and Homefront to the iPad.

Online gaming sensation OnLive will be heading to the iPad this autumn with the company confirming it will release an official application for Apple and Android tablets.

Last week we received confirmation that the popular streaming service will launch in the UK in October and that is likely to coincide with the launch of the OnLive Player app for iPad and various Android-infused tablets across the world.

On Tuesday at E3, OnLIve confirmed that release saying that the new app will "provide far higher performance, richer gameplay and deeper social integration than any console announced for 2012, with more than 100 games available today."

Games on both iPad and Android will be compatible with the new OnLive Wireless Controller, meaning there's no messing about with an awkward touchscreen control interface, which diminishes the enjoyment of many of the top games already rocking the app store.

Already in existence is the OnLive Viewer app for iPad, which currently only allows tablet owners to view the live action taking place online, but the OnLive Player is what gamers have really been waiting for.

OnLive currently allows gamers to stream a number of top-tier titles from the internet, to buy them outright, rent them, or pay a monthly subscription fee for unlimited use. Currently the service is compatible with most Macs and PCs or on your HDTV though the OnLive Games System set-top box.

Steve Jobs unveils plans for 'spaceship' Apple HQ revamp

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:13 AM PDT

Steve Jobs pitches Apple HQ plans to Cupertino council

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has unveiled plans for the company’s new campus having made an appearance before the Cupertino City Council following his WWDC keynote speech and software unveiling.

Having officially revealed iOS 5, iCloud and the new OS X Lion to a San Francisco based audience on Monday, Apple’s talismanic leader Steve Jobs, who is still undertaking an indefinite medical leave of absence from his fulltime roll, pitched the company’s plans for a revamped headquarters to the Cupertino City Council.

The curved-glass circular ‘spaceship’ HQ showcased in Jobs’ plans is said to be a “human-scale” four-story building that will house 13,000 employees on a site that was previously the original home of HP’s computer systems division. Having already acquired the land that now houses little more than asphalt car parks Apple has claimed it would plump its green credentials by restoring landscape coverage from 20 to 80 per cent with apricot orchards topping the list of natural installations.

Further fighting the eco front, Jobs declared the planned Apple HQ; a facility he said would be the “best office building in the world,” would utilise natural gas and other clean energy as its primary power source. Apple intends to begin production of its new Cupertino home next year ahead of a 2015 move.

iOS 5 jailbroken just one day after release

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:46 AM PDT

iOS 5 gets opened up right out of the gate.

iOS 5, which you'll recall was announced but a day or so ago by Steve Jobs at WWDC, has already been cracked open by serial jailbreakers, iPhone Dev Team (just a confusing name - they're nothing to do with Apple's actual iPhone developers).

A member of the group tweeted on Tuesday night that the beta release of iOS 5, which had so far only been released to app developers, is vulnerable to an already-existing exploit in iOS software.

Jailbroken iDevices allow users to install modified versions of Apple's operating systems and run third party apps not hosted on the App Store. Two screenshots posted by the jailbreak group show what they claim to be an iPod Touch running a jailbroken iOS 5, evidenced by the icon for the Cydia app store - a separate app store only available on jailbroken Apple devices.

It's not all bad news for Apple, though - iOS 5 won't be released to the public until the Autumn, and if part of the point of beta testing is to spot flaws in the final product, then iOS 5 is performing its job admirably.

Facebook facial recognition now worldwide

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:23 AM PDT

Formerly US-only "tag suggestions" service rolling out worldwide.

Facebook users in the US have had the company's facial recognition technology since December last year, but Facebook have just confirmed that the tech has rolled out to the rest of the world now, too.

The software scans photos uploaded to Facebook and stores information on which faces are tagged with which names. The idea is to let Facebook then suggest users' names as tags in photos, rather than the uploader having to tag each person in a photo one at a time.

As per usual with any story which can connect the words "Facebook" and "privacy", Zuckerberg et al. came under fire for failing to announce the update when it was made, with web security firm Sophos the first to break the news that Facebook was now storing facial recognition data on users outside of the US.

Facebook have responded on their blog, saying that "While tags are an essential tool for sharing important moments, many of you have said tagging photos can be a chore. (Like that time you had to tag your cousin and her fiancé over and over and over again in 64 different pictures of their engagement party, and then go back and tag the guests.)"

So, nothing outwardly nefarious going on, but those Facebook conspiracy theorists still convinced something shady's going on will have the option to opt out of the tag suggestions service in their Facebook settings.

iPad 3 to launch this Autumn alongside iOS 5?

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 11:51 PM PDT

New iOS 5 SDK says "maybe".

It seems the developer build of the upcoming Apple iOS 5 has revealed more than Apple had bargained for (or did it?). Hidden in the code are references to "iPad3,1" and "iPad3,2", the most explicit hints we've seen so far of the next Apple tablet.

iOS 5 was announced at WWDC just a couple of days ago, with Steve Jobs telling gathered Apple fans to expect the new mobile operating system in Autumn. With no iPhone 5 announcement, this led many, including us, to speculate that the iPhone 5 will be launching in the Autumn as well, but with these iPad-shaped nuggets of code appearing so early in iOS 5's life, could the rumours of an early iPad 3 launch actually have some weight?

There's been a lot of back-and-forth on the quesiton of Jobs & Co. rolling out the next generation iPad before the end of the year, breaking the usual yearly cycle, but last we'd heard, those rumours had been debunked by the companies that supply Apple components. Certainly, making the iPad 2 old hat after just six months would rightly infuriate its early adopters, but if the no-show iPhone 5 has taught us anything, it's to never be too certain.
