The smartphone market remains in the grip of the Samsung Galaxy S II as statistics today revealed that the handset has sold over 3 million units since its launch just 55 days ago. Not content with its current dominance, the Korean electronics manufacturer is also expected to release a Windows Phone 7 version of the Galaxy S II. Samsung has also confirmed that the eagerly anticipated Honeycomb version of TouchWiz will shortly be coming to Galaxy Tab 10.1 users.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1, however, is one of four Samsung products that Apple claims have infringed on its patents. Apple filed on Friday for the prohibition of sales of many Samsung products in the US, with a view to halting production entirely. Perhaps distracted by the ongoing legal saga with Samsung, Apple has not stepped in to stop the sale of an early iPhone 4 prototype that has found its way onto eBay.

Today also sees Zumba Fitness stay ahead of the competition at the top of the UK gaming charts for yet another week. Sony has extended the availability of its PSN ‘Welcome Back’ package, and the compensatory freebies are now available to PSN users until Tuesday. Simultaneously, there are reports suggesting that Taiwan-based technology manufacturers are readying for work on the PS4, as Sony may be aiming for a 2012 release date.

Twitter hack sees Fox News declare 'Obama is dead'

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 08:21 AM PDT

Fox News' Twitter feed has been hacked it an attack that has declared "President Barack Obama is dead"

Hackers have taken control of a Twitter account run by US news outlet Fox News using the reputable social media source to falsely declare US President Barack Obama had been assassinated.

Twitter feed @FoxNewsPolitics was hacked in the early hours of this morning with hackers looking to mar America’s Independence Day celebrations with rumours that Barack Obama has been shot dead.

The first tweet, which was placed by the hackers at 7:14am GMT, read: "@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July, indeed. President Barack Obama is dead.”

Four further tweets sent over a seven minute period looked to detail how Obama had been shot twice whilst dining at Ross’ restaurant in Iowa with gunshot wounds to the lower pelvic area and neck causing the President to bleed to death. Looking to spread the news past the single Twitter feed the hackers posted a message which read: “#ObamaDead, it's a sad 4th of July. RT to support the late president's family, and RIP. The shooter will be found.”

Whilst the tweets have yet to be removed suggesting hackers still have control of the account the last message posted to the news outlet came at 7:29am GMT reading: “We wish @joebiden the best of luck as our new President of the United States. In such a time of madness, there's light at the end of tunnel.”

In an official release Vice President and General Manager of Fox News Digital Jeff Misenti announced: "We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts."

The latest in an ongoing series of high-profile hack attacks, the Fox News Twitter feed appears to have been targeted by a group referring to themselves as The Script Kiddies with a number of tweets appearing from an account by that name before being quickly suspended.

"More than anything this act of sabotage demonstrates the power of Twitter not just to inform but to misinform on a massive scale if infiltrated by rogue elements,” said Mike Essex of digital marketing and social media specialists Koozai on the attacks.

He added: “With the likes of LulzSec and Anonymous focusing so heavily on hacking big brands, it’s worth noting these same big brands are also present on Twitter, where they can be manipulated to say anything the hacker wishes.

"People automatically trust these big name Twitter accounts, especially those that are ‘verified’ such as @Foxnewspolitics, giving their tweets decidedly more gravitas."

Will the attacks on the Fox News account spark a new breed of Twitter hacks or are companies already aware of the threats posed? Let us know what you think via the T3’s own Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows Phone app news: Foursquare gets revamp

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 07:52 AM PDT

Foursquare goes for second time lucky with WP7 application.

Foursquare has unleashed a new version of its Windows Phone 7 application, which has been completely redesigned for the coming-of-age mobile OS.

Foursquare 2.0 arrives on the App Marketplace after the original version was pulled from the store due to the lack of features and a poor use experience.

The app has been redesigned in collaboration with Microsoft and the UI mimics WP7's Metric design and panoramic interface set-up.

Foursquare 2.0 features a host of newly-integrated features, including tap-and-hold check-ins, LiveTile and the opportunity to view specials that friends nearby have checked-in at.

The new version of the app is available to download from the Windows App Marketplace now and joins the 25,000 applications now available in the store.

Zumba Fitness tops UK All Format Gaming Charts again

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 07:15 AM PDT

Zumba Fitness continues its dominance at the top of the UK gaming charts

505 Games' Zumba Fitness remains top of the UK's All Format games charts, having managed to outsell its four closest competitors combined.

This is the sixth time that the title has been top of the UK gaming charts since its release in November 2010 and it remains way out in front of its nearest rivals.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean has had a strong week, jumping up to second place to push L.A.Noire and F.E.A.R. 3 down into third and fourth respectively. Meanwhile the second week of the Wimbledon Championships has inspired further sales for Top Spin 4 and Virtua Tennis 4, the latter of which moved up fifteen places to round out this weeks Top 5.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has jumped up into sixth position, no doubt as a result of the huge advertising campaign behind the forthcoming blockbuster. DiRT 3 has been pushed down into seventh, with Top Spin 4, Brink and FIFA 11 making up the rest of this week's top 10.

Of this week's new releases, only two made the top 40 and both failed to make the top 20 chart. Capcom's Resident Evil Mercenaries reached second position in the 3DS chart but fell just outside the All Format chart in 21st position, whilst THQ's UFC personal trainer was a place below in 22nd spot.

Samsung Galaxy S II Windows Phone 7 handset incoming?

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 04:41 AM PDT

Samsung is expected to launch a Windows Phone 7 version of its Galaxy S II handset alongside the upcoming Phone 7 Mango update

Samsung is expected to launch a Windows Phone 7 rendition of its market leading Samsung Galaxy S II handset, new reports have suggested.

Having today announced that the Android 2.3, Gingerbread, powered Samsung Galaxy S II handset has notched up a company record 3 million unit sales in just 55 days, reports have emerged the Korean tech giant plans to launch a Windows Phone 7 version of the powerful handset to coincide with the arrival of the operating system’s upcoming Mango software update.

The reports have surfaced after a new Samsung handset, dubbed the Samsung SGH-i937 turned up on the Bluetooth SIG, sparking rumours Samsung had a replacement for its first WP7 handset, the Samsung Omnia 7, in the works.

The Samsung Galaxy S II has been the highest selling smartphone in the UK for the past two months toppling Apple’s iPhone 4 thanks to a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording credentials and a super slim form factor.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform is growing rapidly with more than 25,000 Windows Phone 7 apps now available in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

Microsoft’s new mobile platform Windows Phone 7 now sports more than 25,000 applications in its native application marketplace, new figures have revealed.

Whilst Microsoft has yet to make a formal announcement on the matter, app tracker WindowsPhoneApplist last week revealed that the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace now hosts an impressive 25,076 apps just eight months after the mobile platform launched.

With free applications reportedly accounting for half of the content in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, games and books are the most populated sectors.

Despite racking up over 3,100 additions to its app offering every month, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 OS still lags dramatically behind rivals Apple and Google on the app front with Google’s Android platform recently recording its 4.5 billionth app download whist the Apple’s iOS App Store now boasts more than 500,000 apps, 100,000 of which are iPad native.

Will the Windows Phone 7 platform kick into a higher gear when Nokia’s WP7 handsets land later this year? Let us now what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:53 AM PDT

A PS4 release date has been set as pre-Christmas 2012 as Sony prepares to begin production of the next-gen gamer this year

Sony is to begin production of the eagerly awaited PlayStation 4 console later this year ahead of 2012 release date, new reports have suggested.

Having unveiled the Sony PlayStation Vita at E3 last month, Sony is expected to officially unveil the PS4 at next year’s Los Angeles based industry showcase ahead of a pre-Christmas 2012 release with Microsoft Kinect styled movement-based gaming.

Free PS3 games PSN Welcome Back gift extended

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:39 AM PDT

Sony extends access to the PSN Welcome back package which includes a selection of free PS3 games

Sony has announced that it is extending its PSN Wecome Back package which includes a series of free PS3 games and access to PlayStation Plus, until Tuesday.

Originally, Sony had intended to end the deal just after midnight on July 3rd. The company has now given UK PS3 gamers until 5pm to get their hands on a selection of PS3 games which includes Little Big Planet, Infamous and Wipeout HD. PSP gamers also have a freebie selection to choose from which includes Killzone Liberation and ModNation.

The compensation was in response to a series of PlayStation Network attacks where initially PSN services went down for over 24 hours. This outage went on to last for over a month with 77 million members having details stolen including including names, birth dates, email addresses and passwords.

Sony apologised for the PlayStation Network hack at E3 last month and offered the Welcome Back package which also included access to PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited services.

If you haven't done so already, your free games can be accessed in the PlayStation Store now.

Apple tries to prevent US getting Galaxy Tab 10.1

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:11 AM PDT

Just when you thought the fight was finally over, Apple wants to get back into the ring.

Apple has filed an injunction on Friday which it hopes will ban the sale of four of Samsung's biggest products in the US.

Claiming that the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, Infuse 4G, Droid charge smartphones and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 all infringe four of Apple's patents, Cupertino not only wants to ban their sale, but also halt their production entirely.

While this may seem like a lot, Apple are, according to them, holding back, with the company apparently stipulating that if and when it becomes a problem, they also plan to seek injunctions against the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and the Galaxy Tab 8.9.

Unsurprisingly Samsung has dismissed all of Apple's claims saying that the injunction has no legal grounding and will fall through. This is just the latest in a series of legal disputes between the two companies in which neither side has managed to gain a stronger foothold.

iPhone 4 prototype goes on sale

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 01:44 AM PDT

Ever wanted to get your hands on a pre-production prototype of the iPhone 4? Don't expect it to sync with iTunes though.

A early prototype of the iPhone 4 has become available on eBay, making it the first time an Apple prototype has been available for sale without Apple stepping in.

The handset is believed to be of the same generation that Gizmodo managed to get its paws on before the iPhone 4 was announced. Containing different internal components to the model which you can buy in the shops, this particular iPhone 4 also features an identity code on the front, matching it with the assigned member of staff who has unfortunately misplaced it.

Aside from lacking any '+' or '-' marks on the volume buttons you'd be hard-pressed to notice any difference whatsoever. Finally and most importantly however, the unit is in fact almost unuseable, with the handset refusing to communicate with iTunes, making it either a very attractive/expensive paperweight or a serious challenge to unlock.

At £502, would you pay that much for a piece of Apple history, or is that price pushing it a bit? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 apps will be non-exlcusive

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 12:48 AM PDT

In a move that will surprise many, Nokia has announced that with Windows Phone 7, everyone is a friend, regardless of brand.

Nokia's Senior Vice President of Developer and Marketplace Marco Argenti has revealed that many of Nokia's Windows Phone 7 apps will not be exclusive to their own handsets, with customers being able to install them on any Windows Phone 7 handset.

While it's confirmed that every app will be available on any handset, there will of course be some features which Nokia will want to be hanging on to, a full version of Ovi Maps for example.

Ditching Microsoft's Bing Maps (or at least quietly placing it in a corner), the Nokia handsets will take full advantage of the company's previous expertise in the field, utilising 3D mapping and directional navigation.

Unfortunately it's not yet known just how many of these features would be carried across, if at all onto a HTC Windows Phone 7 handset for example, but what is clear is that Nokia is taking a completely different stance on Windows Phone 7 and the development and sharing of their own software.

Will you be embracing Nokia and Windows Phone 7, or have they just no won you round? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 outsells original to set record

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 12:11 AM PDT

Despite having the iPhone 4 and its own sibling breathing down its neck, the Samsung Galaxy S 2 has managed to defy the odds.

Samsung has revealed that after just 55 days its flagship handset, the Samsung Galaxy S 2, has sold over 3 million units, swiftly surpassing the company's previous record set by the original Samsung Galaxy S.

The smartphone which measures in at just 8.49mm thin has received widespread praise for its huge power in the form of a dual core processor and excellent Super AMOLED Plus screen which, according to some, could even rival the iPhone 4's retina display.

This is clearly great news for the South Korean company as it means that just on Galaxy S 2 sales alone, they're moving on average one handset every 1.5 seconds. Hardly a statistic to be sniffed at.

So is the Samsung Galaxy S 2 still the king of the hill, or will the upcoming iPhone 5 be able to topple its reign? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.
