Android app news: Official Scrabble app finally arrives Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:22 AM PDT
With an free, official Scrabble app, is the game up for Words With Friends? Team Apple and the Android Army have been going at each other all year, but now the two stables can settle their differences in more civilised fashion - on the Scrabble board.
Yes, Hasbro and EA have finally launched an official Scrabble app for Android which will allow cross-platform battles between Google phones, iDevices like the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, and Facebook gamers can rage on.
It's easy to track down your dictionary deficient foe by username or email and up to 50 games at a time can be played over Wi-Fi and 3G. If your battery dies amid frenzied word-making, the app will save your last word.
You can also play against a random opponent online, or you can play a two player game on the same handset, with the Pass & Play mode. The app doesn't feature the option to play against the CPU a la iOS.
The arrival of an official Scrabble app threatens the dominance of the Words With Friends imitator which has enabled free, cross-platform play for some time now.
The app is free to download, (while the iPhone version is £1.79 and the iPad HD iteration is £5.99) from the Android Market.

Apple patents reveal 3D gesture control plans Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:51 AM PDT
A new patent filing placed by Apple has emerged in the US with the Cupertino firm reportedly looking to register the exclusive use of 3D gesture controls for touchscreen devices.
Whilst current multipoint gesture controlled touchscreens allow users to utilise a series of multi-touch gestures to select and manipulate onscreen content, Apple’s latest patent filing looks set to add an extra dimension to such controls.
Whilst it is unknown exactly when Apple intends to rollout such 3D technologies across its touchscreen touting devices it is not expected the patented tech will feature in the upcoming iPhone 5 release date that is also expected to see the arrival of the iPad 3 or iPad 2 Plus as well as a new iPod Touch device and a HD Apple TV unit.

It is not the first time Moscow's most famous tourist attraction has featured on the Google homepage, however, with the famous landmark also appearing in the 2010 Christmas doodle. iOS 5 beta 3 reveals Assistive Touch skills Posted: 12 Jul 2011 03:01 AM PDT
Latest beta rolled out to devs. iOS 5 is getting ever closer to its official September release. But devs who’ve already got their hands on the beta of the next-gen operating system have just been served up the latest version, which brings so-called Assistive Touch skills to the iPad.
The new system aims to give one tap access instead of the iPad’s usual gesture controls. A menu can be brought up by pressing on one corner, which will then give users the chance to swipe through screens, lock the rotation tool, use pinch-to-zoom and control the volume.
This might seem a tad bizarre for those who think the iPad is the breeziest device to use in the world, but it seems Apple has had feedback suggesting some users are keen for such a feature.

Google apologises for Google+ notification spam Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:13 AM PDT
Big G owns up to notification error, says it didn't expect to be so popular so quickly. Google has apologised for a notification error in its new Google+ social network, which saw users receive stacks of emails telling them the same thing repeatedly. The issue was caused by a lack of disk space.
Taking to Google+ to say sorry, Google’s Vic Gundotra said, “For about 80 minutes we ran out of disk space on the service that keeps track of notifications. Hence out system continued to try sending notifications. Over, and over again. Yikes.”
Gundotra added, “We didn’t expect to hit these high thresholds so quickly, but we should have.” Despite receiving a relatively lukewarm critical reception, Google+ remains the most talked about tech story of the moment, with punters desperate to see what all the hype is about.

iRiver Story HD: Google eBooks supported e-reader imminent Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:01 AM PDT
US book lovers get first dibs on iRiver's new digital reader. The iRiver Story HD, first spied back at CES in January, is finally heading to shelves, the company has announced. But while that in itself might not get you too het up, the news that this is the first e-reader to support Google eBooks definitely should.
It means that users can easily connect to and snag books from Google’s eBook store, previously the preserve of PCs and tablets. There are thousands of classics and stacks of new titles to choose from, meaning the iRiver Story HD should give the predominant Amazon Kindle a run for its money.
Specs-wise, the Story HD packs a QWERTY keyboard for browsing your library and searching out new tomes, a 1024x768 e-paper panel and 2GB of space for stashing books.
Sadly, it’s US only for now, costing just $139 (£87). That’s likely down to the fact the Google eBooks are only for sale in the States. Here’s hoping when the virtual book shop’s doors finally open in the UK, the iRiver Story HD’s on hand too.

iPad 3: Apple bringing new manufacturer on board Posted: 11 Jul 2011 11:34 PM PDT
Cupertino expecting surge in sales ahead of Christmas. Apple is said to be planning a tie-up with a second Far Eastern manufacturer as the release of the iPad 3 nears. Digitimes reckons that Cupertino is looking to ramp up production soon, and that Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology could be in line to benefit.
The move is said to be a result of a fire at Foxconn back in May. Foxconn is Apple’s chosen manufacturer for the iPad, but has been the subject of intense media interest in light of revelations about poor working conditions.
The same report says sources are confident the new iPad will be out later this year, pointing to recent tittle tattle about the new model being dubbed either the iPad 2 Plus or iPad HD. The new slate is expected to have an improved screen, but pack the same innards as the current iPad.
