News@8pm: iPhone 5 release date and PES 2012 release

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

Today, Konami finally confirmed the Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 release date with the latest instalment in the Japanese developer's footy franchise to be made available to purchase on October 14th meaning that its closest rival FIFA 2012 will be on the shelves a whole two weeks before its release. In more gaming news, Codemaster’s popular rally driving sim DiRT 3 has a new DLC bringing two all new Rallycross tracks.

In an act of desperation, Nintendo has been forced to cut the price of the 3DS worldwide by almost a third of its original RRP following a report of having sold just 710,000 units in the three months leading up to June.

More iPhone 5 case pictures were released today. As with yesterdays leaked photo, the new pic again suggests that the iPhone 5 will have curved edges and also that the mute button will be repositioned on the opposite side. These leaks have been further supported by a Chinese newspaper which reported a iPhone 5 release date of mid-September.

Just in case you needed any more convincing, a representative of mobile phone retailer Phones 4u hinted that the iPhone 5 would be getting an end of September release. Finally, in other Apple news, EA’s CEO reported today that the iPad is currently the fastest growing gaming device platform.

How to rebuild civilisation

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 09:29 AM PDT

It's a question we often ask: what tools would we need to survive a nuclear war?

British grafitti artist, Boxi has thankfully come up with the answer.

As part of his debut solo exhibition at the Lazarides Gallery on Rothbone Street in London, he has created "Time Capsule", an in-depth picture of all the toosl one might need.

From axes, spanners, even books on forgotten worlds are in the drawing.

Sadly, no iPhone 5 was included.

Other work at the exhibition includes “THE WANDERER (after Caspar David Friedrich)” involves painting an entire white wall using meticulous cutting techniques and an extensive pallet of muted colours to portray a dystopic urban scene.

FIFA 12 cover revealed with Rooney and Wilshire as stars

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 09:16 AM PDT

FIFA 12 release date to see Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshire appear as FIFA 12 cover stars

Just hours after Konami made the PES 2012 release date official, EA Sports has hit back unveiling the art work for FIFA 12 revealing both Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshire will feature as the game’s cover stars in the UK.

With a FIFA 12 UK release date pencilled in for September 30th, three days after the game launches in the US, EA has officially revealed the football sim’s box art with Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney making his seventh consecutive appearance on the game’s cover.

Joining Rooney for the first time as a FIFA cover star is fellow England star and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshire with the two plays set to appear on the UK, Irish, Scandinavian and Middle East renditions of the market dominating game.

Whilst EA has improve the collision engines for FIFA 12 to bring added realism to tackles and impacts, Pro Evo developer Konami today revealed the PES 2012 release date as October 14th, two weeks after FIFA 12, whilst announcing its title “is a massive advance for the football genre.”

iPhone 5 release date hinted at as 'end of September'

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Exclusive: Phones 4u representative hints to T3 that the Apple iPhone 5 release date is coming at the 'end of September'

With new iPhone 5 rumours landing daily and many expecting the mooted handset to launch in a matter of weeks, a representative of mobile phone retailer Phones 4u has hinted to T3 that the iPhone 5 release date will be towards the ‘end of September’.

Speaking with T3 a sales representative of Phones 4u in Caernafon, Wales has hinted that the iPhone 5 will officially launch in the UK around the ‘end of September’ whilst refusing to give any further information on Apple’s expected next-generation handset.

“Unfortunately we are unable to announce any details on the iPhone 5 release,” the Phone 4u representative said before adding: “If you were due an upgrade at the end of September lets just say you would be quite happy.”

Whilst back in May a Phones 4u customer sales representative in St. Albans adamantly declared to T3 that the iPhone 5 release date was set for November 21st, the company now appears to have moved that date forward by two months.

Seemingly made with little backing the end of September iPhone 5 release claims should be taken with a pinch of salt whilst recent rumours of a 1GHz dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera landing in the iPhone 5 appear to have more backing.

When do you think we will finally see the iPhone 5 made official? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the iPhone 5 release date.

PES 2012 UK release date officially confirmed by Konami

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:25 AM PDT

The Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 release date is confirmed as October 14th

Konami has officially confirmed the PES 2012 release date with the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC renditions of the latest Pro Evolution title to touch down on October 14th.

Boasting a heavily revamped AI PES 2012 is to launch in the UK two weeks after long term rival FIFA 12 as the “most ambitious and advanced football game ever,” at least according to the game’s developer.

"PES 2012 is a massive advance for the football genre, truly the most ambitious and advanced football game ever," Konami’s European PES Team Leader Jon Murphy announced alongside the PES 2012 release date.

He added: "The additions we have made in terms of Teammate Control, Active AI and Off the Ball Control and elevate the level of play to new heights. No other game allows users so much control over their team, and PES 2012 ensures that the days of gaps in defence and shouting at teammates to make a run are long gone.”

With the FIFA 12 UK release date set as September 30th, football fans looking to splash out on the latest sporting sim will have to avoid EA’s temptations and hold on to their cash for two extra weeks if they wish to forgo FIFA for PES.

HTC Vigor specs leak with 1.5GHz CPU and 720p display

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 06:50 AM PDT

The HTC Vigor leaks as HTC's next premium handset

A new HTC handset has reportedly leaked in America with the mooted HTC Vigor attributed to the Verizon network in the US with a hefty processor and 720p display.

Far from official the HTC Vigor is claimed to be heading for release in the States on a yet unknown date with its previously leaked 6-megapixel camera to be joined by Google’s Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS and a 1280 x 720p display.

Whilst the screen size does not accompany the display’s mooted resolution, the leaked information also suggests the handset will land with a 1.5GHz processor that it is assumed will be of the dual-core variety.

The leak, which we suggest should be taken with a somewhat liberal pinch of salt, comes from the Android Police tech blog which has suggested its ‘anonymous’ source also revealed the handset will feature a Qualcomm Adreno GPU. Release details and pricing as well as UK launch information has all yet to be announced.

Could the mooted HTC Vigor challenge the Sensation as the company’s new flagship handset? Let us know what you think and stay tuned for all the latest via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:51 AM PDT

A new DiRT 3 DLC has been released by Codemasters to celebrate X-Games 17

Developer Codemasters has release a new DiRT 3 trailer outing gameplay footage of the racing titles latest DLC release, X-Games Asia Track Pack.

The two new tracks are given an X-Game tilt each combining aspects of tarmac and dirt courses and close-quarters racing set in the urban surrounding of a central Tokyo backdrop.

Officially released earlier this year DiRT 3 spent a number of weeks atop the UK All Format Gaming Charts combining its classic off-road racing roots with a flurry of new features and content including the all new Gymkhana mode made famous by the game’s poster boy Ken Block.

Have you already splashed out on DiRT 3 and its following DLC packs? Let us know what you think of the rally-based title via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo 3DS price cut to see a third dropped from RRP

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:14 AM PDT

Nintendo slash 3DS price worldwide after poor quarterly sales

Following poor second quarter sales Nintendo has announced it is to dramatically drop the price of the Nintendo 3DS with the portable console’s price to be slashed by around a third.

Having revealed earlier today that just 710,000 3DS consoles had been sold in the three months to June 2011 Nintendo has confirmed that in an attempt to bolster sales in the coming months it is to cut the device’s price from $249 to just $169.99 in the US with a similar UK drop to be announced.

"We can confirm that Nintendo of Europe will be reducing the European trade price of Nintendo 3DS to retailers by around a third from 12th August 2011, as part of a global trade price reduction initiative,” a Nintendo Europe spokesperson announced.

They added: “The ultimate price to consumers is, of course, determined by retailers, however we look forward to consumers benefiting from much lower retail prices very soon."

Would a cut price point tempt you into picking up a Nintendo 3DS or goes the gimmick of glasses-free 3D still not appeal? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Motorola planning Nike+ watch rival

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:28 AM PDT

No word on when Moto will go official with new piece of kit.

Motorola is plotting a new, watch-like fitness device that takes direct aim at Nike and TomTom’s SportWatch, not to mention Apple’s own iPod nano.

The new device, which hasn’t been named, was unearthed by a tipster from a Moto private document. Word is it’ll have a “smart music player”, designed to play tracks that are perfect for the gym or when you’re out running. It’ll also rock GPS smarts for tracking your jogging sessions.

The design is sure to have Apple taking a close look, seeing as it clearly resembles the current, pared down design of the iPod nano.

Tell us whether you’d stump up for this new Motorola gadget over on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

The Xperia X10 looks set to catch up with the Android pack as a Gingerbread update rolls out worldwide…

Anyone who bought the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 last year may have felt a bit let down by the fact that it launched with Android 2.1 (Éclair), and looked set to stay there while the rest of the Android brigade rushed past.

Now some good news has filtered out of the SE HQ, as the company has revealed that it’s ‘listened to customers’ and planned in an imminent update to Android 2.3 – otherwise known as Gingerbread.

- Android 2.3 (Gingerbread): Best features

The jump up will bring the Xperia X10 in line with the current crop of Android smartphones, and allows better gaming, a new look and a slicker UI. Sony Ericsson says that the update – which will only be available via computer sync – will be rolling out across the world imminently, but it’ll depend on country and network as to exactly when you’ll be able to upgrade.

Apple iPad 'fastest-growing game platform' says EA head

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Apple iPad 2 troubling the games industry thanks to gaming apps

Apple’s market dominating iPad tablet is currently the fastest growing gaming platform, the CEO of industry developer EA has announced.

As well as holding a controlling stake in the tablet market EA CEO John Riccitiello has revealed that the Apple iPad and iPad 2 is making waves in the gaming sector becoming the fastest growing platform for the games industry in less than two years.

“Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn't exist 18 months ago,” Riccitiello announced. "Consoles today are 40 per cent of the game industry, so what do we really have? We have a new hardware platform and we're putting out software every 90 days.”

With EA having already published more than 30 iPad titles Riccitiello believes the tablet industry and Apple’s offering will help progress the games market. He said: "I would argue that there's more to be provided in terms of value for the consumer in micro-transactions and social experiences and driving those better in cross-platform gameplay between a console and a PC and a handheld device and a social network than there is supercharging graphics."

Earlier this month Apple revealed there are now more than 100,000 native iPad apps in the iTunes App Store with games proving the most popular apps with iPad adopters whilst the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 recognised the iPad’s gaming credentials with the Apple tablet making the finals for the Gaming Gadget of the Year award.

iPhone 5 case leak: more pics surface

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 02:30 AM PDT

Curved edges and moved mute button for new iPhone?

The recent leak of iPhone 5 case design schematics caused plenty of buzz among Apple fanatics earlier this week. And now an image of the case itself has leaked online, backing up claims of a redesign for the next-gen blower.

The bright green case, pictured here, suggests the iPhone 5 will have curved edges, as opposed to the sharp, flushed look of the current iPhone 4. The buttons appear to be in the same place, although the mute key has been moved to the other side of the device.

Case leaks used to be a huge boon for Apple watchers trying to second guess Jobs and co’s next move. But Cupertino has recently clamped down on third parties leaking their case designs.

Nintendo 3DS sales slump in Q2 with just 710,000 units sold

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 02:28 AM PDT

Nintendo 3DS sales drop announced in second quarter profits call

Nintendo has officially announced its second quarter earnings revealing it sold just 710,000 3DS consoles in the three month period blaming a lack of hit titles for the flailing sales.

Following the global launch of the Nintendo 3DS earlier this year Nintendo has confirmed that second quarter sales of the glasses-free 3D portable games console have struggled with the standard definition Nintendo DS and DSi consoles outselling the latest device with 1.44 million units sold worldwide.

“During the three months ended June 2011, for the Nintendo 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D was launched and favourably received, but the Nintendo 3DS has few other hit titles,” the official Nintendo announcement stated.

It went on to add: “As a result, the worldwide sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and Nintendo 3DS software were 0.71 million units and 4.53 million units respectively.”

Whilst the 3DS continues to struggle Nintendo has reported that sales of the Wii have risen over the past three months with lower priced bundle deals seeing the now aging motion gamer shift 1.56 million units.

The dwindling sales report comes in the same week it emerged Amazon had dropped the 3DS from its US store following a series of customer complaints.

Apple iPhone 5 release date now in September?

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 11:39 PM PDT

Apple has given its iPhone 5 device a September release date, according to a Chinese newspaper that also claims Apple has ordered 4m handsets to be made by its Far Eastern suppliers

Rumblings around the iPhone 5’s potential release date are continuing, with a Chinese newspaper now claiming the revamped device will not be out until the second week of September.

The China Times says Apple has ordered four million of the devices from its Far Eastern suppliers, with production only now beginning to ramp up. Word is there are 400,000 trial models being made first.

What’s more, it seems Apple's so-called iPad 3 will not be unleashed at the same time, with tight component supplies apparently pushing the release of the Retina Display-packing slate back to November.

iPad app news: iPlayer app launches in Europe today

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 11:00 PM PDT

Global iPlayer will be exclusive to iPad for one-year trial.

The long-awaited international expansion of the BBC iPlayer begins today with the launch of the service in 11 European countries exclusively via the Apple iPad app.

The global iPlayer service will be available only on the iPad during a one-year trial, during which the US, Canada and Australia will also gain access at some stage.

The BBC is pushing the global iPlayer as a video on-demand portal rather than just the catch-up TV platform we've become accustomed to on domestic shores.

The app will feature that month's new content, including the likes of Top Gear, Dr Who and Eastenders but will also feature on-demand access to classics from the BBC's 60-year catalogue. Yes, that means Only Fools and Horses.

The iPlayer app will debut with 1,500 hours of programming, but the Beeb plans to add 100 hours every month. On top of that, the Corporation has also agreed deals with independent studios to screen content originally aired on ITV or Channel 4.

"We think we have a load of unmet demand for BBC and British content internationally," said BBC.com MD Luke Bradley-Jones.

"This is not a catch-up service: this is a video-on-demand service. We will have content from the last month, but also the best from the catalogue stretching back 50 to 60 years."

Some of the content will be free of charge and supported by pre-rolls and sponsorships, but the main bounty will come through a monthly subscription fee of 6.99 Euros or a yearly fee of 49.99 Euros.

The application will allow users to watch over Wi-Fi and 3G and download programmes for offline viewing. The BBC says that if the trial is successful the app will expand to the iPhone, Apple TV and perhaps Android tablets if they enjoy success.

The 11 launch countries are Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

News@8pm: iPhone 5 case and Battlefield 3 Beta details

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

Leaked online today was an apparent iPhone 5 case design, suggesting that the handset will have a stylish curved back. Elsewhere on the iPhone front a recent survey of 3,000 customers has revealed more than half stated that they already had intentions on purchasing the iPhone 5 despite not yet having solid details about the phone.

Apple has recently leaked its fifth generation iPod Touch device, confirming that it will pack all new 3G capabilities. In its fight to make its products as compact as humanly possible and following on from the MacBook Air, it is reported Apple will be releasing a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Air-styled thinness.

In gaming news, eager FPS fans can now sign up in anticipation of the Battlefield 3 Alpha Trial. The game’s developer DICE has also released information regarding its Beta test which will apparently commence in September before its October release. In other gaming related news, Microsoft has just revealed a new Bluetooth headset for the Xbox 360, designed not only to be compatible with consoles only, but also PC and mobile users too.

Today brought bad news for Vodafone customers with the HTC EVO 3D phone pulled from the website, a misfortune that has apparently occurred because of mystery ‘delays’. On the other end of the scale, however, Vodafone officially unveiled the Vodafone 555 Blue, a budget Facebook phone that is to take the social network to the core of its propriety OS.

iPhone app news: Google Shopper app adds local deals

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 08:27 AM PDT

Google enters the location-based deals arena with updated Shopper app.

Google has updated its Shopper app for iPhone by adding a host of location-based deals into the mix for certain cities in the United States.

The newly-equipped version 1.5 of the app now features a tab called Offers, which brings up a host of deals from businesses and restaurants in your locale that are trying to tempt you in by submitting deals through their Google Places page

Deals don't have to be used there and then. If you spot a restaurant offering a free desert, but you just had a massive Thornton's Ice Cream, you can save it to "My Offers" and redeem it at a later date.

Unfortunately the deals are only applicable in the San Francisco Bay area, New York City and Portland, with Google promising that more cities will follow as the scheme rolls out.

The new tab mimics the Facebook Deals functionality which also brings location-based offers through Check-Ins using the company's smartphone app. The arrival of local offers from Google is also a challenger to the likes of Groupon and Living Social.

HTC Sensation to face Samsung Galaxy S II and Apple iPhone 4 after being granted a wildcard entry in to the T3 Gadget Awards 2011

HTC’s latest flagship smartphone the HTC Sensation is the only wildcard entry in the finals of the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 as the dual-core device looks to challenge for the title of Phone of the Year.

Targeting the upper echelons of the mobile market the HTC Sensation was officially unveiled in April ahead of a late May launch falling outside the cut-off period for the 2011 T3 Gadget Awards shortlist.

However, due to the HTC Sensation’s impressive array of specs the handset, which sports a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 768MB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera alongside a 4.3-inch display, was granted a wildcard entry into the final of this year’s awards.

Battling for the Phone of the Year award the HTC Sensation will go up against its sibling handset the HTC Incredible S as well as facing off against the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and the Motorola Atrix.

The two handsets most likely to challenge the Sensation for the coveted prize, however, are the Apple iPhone 4 and Samsung’s own 1.2GHz dual-core offering the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Which handset would you like to see leave the October awards show as the T3 Phone of the Year 2011? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and make it official by voting via the T3 Gadget Awards site.

Fifth generation Apple iPod Touch to launch as iPod Touch 3G following leak

Apple has seemingly leaked its fifth generation iPod Touch device with an image on the Apple UK website showing an iPod Touch with 3G capabilities.

Following a series of rumours that have suggested Apple’s next-gen iPod Touch will sport 3G capabilities the Cupertino-based company has appeared to make the claims official with an image of a iPod Touch with 3G connectivity used to promote the latest iTunes software offering.

Pictured alongside an iPad 2 the iPod Touch 3G can be seen sporting the same form factor as last year’s super slim fourth-generation iPod Touch with the on screen display showing the iPhone familiar 3G connectivity icon.

Expected to be officially unveiled and launch alongside the mooted iPhone 5 in September the iPod Touch 3G will allow users to download music and apps on the go without the need for a Wi-Fi connection.

Whilst the iPod Touch 3G has appeared on the Apple site in picture form already the touchscreen PMP has yet to be officially confirmed with pricing and 3G data plans currently unknown.

With smartphones being so ever present is there still room for the iPod Touch let alone an iPod Touch 3G? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
