Zumba Fitness retains UK All Format Gaming Chart crown

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 04:04 AM PDT

Zumba Fitness has recorded its fourth consecutive week atop the UK All Format Gaming Charts

505 Games' Zumba Fitness remains the UK's best selling game, successfully fending off competition from DiRT 3 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon to record its fourth successive week atop the UK All Formats Gaming Chart.

Codemaster's DiRT 3 rose from its ranking of seventh last week to claim second spot, just ahead of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The Transformers title also saw a rise in sales, moving it from 6th to 3rd as its film counterpart continues to dominate at the Box Office. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean and LA Noire rounded off the top five, placing fourth and fifth respectively.

Virtua Tennis 4 ranks sixth, with tennis fans eager to rewrite the end of the disappointing Wimbledon tennis tournament; 2K's Top Spin also appears in top ten games of the week claiming the final chart position.

Call of Duty: Black Ops leaps from a quiet 17th position last week to a strong showing in seventh, marking an impressive shift for a game released more than seven months ago, and showing Activision's dedication to map packs is paying off. Brink shows up in eighth, after a similar performance to last week, but FEAR 3 struggles to maintain sales, falling from fourth to ninth.

Apple HDTV release incoming as 1080p Full HD movies leak

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 03:33 AM PDT

Apple HDTV is expected to launch in September after leaks suggested it is to begin offering Full HD 1080p movie downloads on iTunes

Apple is to up the quality of its downloadable content and offer Full HD 1080p movies for download from the iTunes store ahead of the launch of Apple HDTV later this year, new reports have claimed.

Quoting “people familiar with the matter” Apple blog AppleInsider has claimed that a number of feature films will hit iTunes later this year available in Full HD form with a 1920 x 1080p resolution.

“A handful of feature films being submitted to the iTunes Store for a release in the September and October timeframe are being sent with documentation for an optional 1920x1080 resolution,” the sources have claimed.

Currently available in standard definition forms at 480p and HD at 720p, Apple has long been criticised for offering sub-Full HD content be it by digital download or via the lack of Blu-ray player in all Mac and MacBook devices.

Looking to turn Apple’s already hefty offering of expected September arrivals, AppleInsider has suggested that Cupertino firm is working on a new Apple TV unit capable of support the 1080p content playback being touted. Expected to land a year after the current model’s arrival, the mooted Apple HDTV set is to replace the current A4 processing chip with the faster, dual-core A5 model.

NFC and mobile payments worth $670bn by 2015

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 01:46 AM PDT

For those who are feeling a bit wary about NFC, you may well be fighting a losing battle as these figures reveal..

The mobile payments market, including NFC payments will nearly triple in value in just a few years with the market jumping up to a staggering $670bn, at least that's according to tech analysts Juniper Research.

According to Juniper we can also expect to see NFC and other digital payment methods accounting for 40% of the market by 2015, hinting towards a future where having a wallet may even seem old fashioned.

With phone companies like Samsung and BlackBerry both embracing NFC it appears as though the ball is very much already rolling, and with 20 countries expected to launch NFC services in the next 18 months it's showing no signs of slowing down.

Is NFC the payment method of the future, or do you like having the security of a card? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable not licensed

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 01:22 AM PDT

Got a new MacBook? Want to play HD movies on your TV with it? HDMI has other ideas.

The company behind HDMI has said that any manufacturers that make the Mini DisplayPort to male HDMI cable should cease production immediately as the product isn't in fact licensed.

Talking to TechRadar the company revealed that it was indeed now contacting all those companies and informing them that such a cable was not testable under their specifications and therefore should not be produced or sold.

What is allowed interestingly is a Mini DisplayPort to female HDMI dongle which then allows you to plug a licensed HDMI cable inbetween. So while it may not be the end of the world for us as a consumer, it is another cable to add to the collection.

Of course HDMI has recognised that there is very much a need and demand for the original specification and has confirmed that it will be looking into finding a solution which will allow the cable to go back on sale. For now though it looks as though your best bet is to hit the stores now before stock dries up.

What do you think, is HDMI making a grave mistake here or just protecting it's technology? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse revealed

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 12:53 AM PDT

If you thought that Microsoft's Arc Touch Mouse was perhaps a bit 'showy' then this may be for you, all the features, simple design.

Microsoft will be releasing a new addition to it's 'Touch' range of mice in the form of the Explorer Touch Mouse which will offer you all the bells and whistles but with an air of modesty about it.

Unlike the Arc Touch, the Explorer Touch is somewhat more bulky, losing the eye-catching design it instead adopts the ethos of productivity over looks, sporting a basic but comfortable-looking design.

Don't be fooled into thinking it's not got the grunt to back it up though. The Explorer has haptic feedback in it's touch-sensitive scroll-wheel just in case you miss the days of old.

It also includes Microsoft's Blue Track Technology which will let you use the Explorer on pretty much anything from a pair of jeans to a pebbled beach (though we're not sure about that last one).

The Explorer Touch should be hitting the shelves by the end of July and will cost £69.99 making it the sensible twin of the Arc Touch.

Has Microsoft's new range won you over or do you long for the scroll-wheel of the past? Join the debate at Facebook and Twitter.

Nyko Zoom for Kinect release date confirmed

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 12:21 AM PDT

Kinect is fun but also heaped in safety red tape, Nyko would rather you just had fun, no matter what size your living room.

Nyko's Zoom peripheral for Microsoft Kinect is to get a release date of August 23rd with the add-on offering gamers the ability to play Kinect almost anywhere.

While they may look like night-vision goggles for your Kinect, what Nyko's pair of 'specs' does is in fact very clever. By using a series of lenses, the Zoom will reduce the Kinect's required playing area to just 4 feet rather than the fairly lavish 8 feet.

It has no power source because it is essentially a pair of glasses for your Kinect, and doesn't affect the performance of Kinect's motion-tracking in any way, so as far as we can see, it's a win win situation.

It's a simple but brilliant solution for those who just don't have that kind of floor space but still want to go flailing their limbs around every once in a while. At $30 it's also not badly priced, however there's no word on whether it'll be coming to the UK, so for now, it's over to internet shopping.

Is the Nyko Zoom enough of a reason for you to get a Kinect now? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Acer pico projectors unveiled

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 11:57 PM PDT

Acer has decided that the UK still needs pico projectors, as such they've given us two more.

Acer is to launch two pico projectors at the end of this month, the C110 and C112, both of which will offer you mobile viewing whether it's on the back of a chair or in the wall of an underpass.

The C110 is the more primative of the two, powered by USB and offering a WVGA screen resolution of 854x480. What it lacks in power it makes up for in other areas with a bulb that will supposedly last you 20,000 hours and a booting up time of five seconds.

At the slightly higher end of the spectrum is the C112, offering you the same resolution but this time throwing in some serious portability with a 2-hour battery pack and a internal speaker, however for those extras there is a hefty premium of £128.

Both will be out later this month and will be priced £199 and £229 respectively. Have either of them caught your fancy or is the pico projector just another gimmick? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.
