News@8pm: iPhone 5 pictures leak and Modern Warfare 3

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

Apple's hotly anticipated iPhone 5 handset has reportedly leaked online, as images of a device appeared on the Apple.pro blog. The pictures are said to have come from a Weibo user, who claims they are of a prototype iPhone 5. In other mobile news, Nikkei claim that its Fujitsu IS12T handset will début the Windows Phone Mango OS, when it launches in Japan in August.

Twitter last night smashed its record for total tweets per second, with help from the Women's World Cup Final. The match between USA and Japan caused Twitter to reach a staggering 7,196 tweets per second, or 431,760 tweets per minute. Elsewhere in the world of social media, a new survey points to 'Circles' to be Google+'s killer feature, suggesting that the functionality poses the greatest threat to Facebook.

Retailer GAME has revealed that Activision's upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to became the most pre-ordered gaming title in history as it looks to challenge the record set by its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops. If pre-orders continue, the title may even topple Zumba Fitness from the UK All Format Gaming Charts, when it is released in November. Zumba Fitness again held the top spot this week, as Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 failed to make a substantial impact.

Netflix is finally headed to the UK next year claim sources speaking with Hollywood Bible Variety; the US movie streaming service is reportedly pegged for an early 2012 launch. Apple also looks to be accommodating film fans, with its new LED Cinema Displays, which are to be released as part of Apple's refresh of its Mac range. Pictures of the screens appeared on the company's website today, but were quickly removed.

T3 Gadget Awards 2011: Votes tied ahead of shortlist stage

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 09:13 AM PDT

T3 Gadget Awards 2011 sees App of the Year category tied just days ahead of the shortlist announcement

With just days left until the longlist for the T3 Gadgets Awards 2011 comes to a close, your votes are needed to determine the finalists with less than ten votes separating which products will make the cut in a number of categories.

Following an incredible reaction from you the T3 reader that has seen more than 300,000 votes already cast, a final push is needed to help determine which products make the final shortlist for the 2011 T3 Gadget Awards with App of the Year and Digital Media Service of the Year two categories that are currently too close to call.

Due to be unveiled this Friday, July 22nd, the Gadget Awards shortlist halves the number of products up for the coveted T3 awards with the ten longlist candidates cut down to a final five finalists in each category.

Whilst there is currently four votes separating two products on the cusp of progressing to the shortlist for the Computer of the Year, Digital Media Service and App of the Year are even closer with a single vote separating the Digital Media prize whilst the fifth and sixth apps up for the App of the Year gong are currently tied on 1,066 votes apiece.

"We've seen an amazing response to the T3 Gadget Awards for 2011. Well over 350,000 user votes have been cast to help find the products, brands and personalities that have captured the imagination since October last year,” Editor of T3.com Kieran Alger announced.

“The public vote and the competition to grab a place in the final has been closer than ever. It's testament to the depth and breadth of innovation we've seen in the past 9 months that just a handful of votes separate those bidding to make the cut and those that look set to fall by the wayside. I can't wait to see the results when the finalists are announced on the 22nd July."

With just four days until the shortlist is announced, time is quickly running out for you to make a difference on the fate of your favourite tech whilst also giving yourself the chance to win a Samsung Smart TV or an Apple iPad 2 tablet. Head on over to the T3 Gadget Awards website now.

Samsung Galaxy Q to launch at IFA as 5.3-inch handset?

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 07:51 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy Q to launch as smartphone, tablet hybrid at IFA this September?

Samsung is preparing the release of a new addition to its Galaxy range that will bridge the gap between smartphone handsets and standalone tablets, new reports have suggested.

Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Q, the new device will reportedly boast a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED display and fall between the company’s largest current smartphone which lines up at 4.5-inches and its smallest tablet device at 7-inches.

Expected to make an appearance at the Samsung press announcement during this year’s IFA conference in Berlin this September, the Samsung Galaxy Q will look to emulate the success of its Galaxy S II handset brethren whilst offering a host of tablet-esque features.

Whilst the company behind the reports, Yahoo in Samsung’s native Korea, have yet to reveal any official word on confirmed specifications and pricing it is expected the hybrid handset will land sporting a powerful dual-core processor and slim line, desirable form factor.

Is 5.3-inches too big for a smartphone and too small for a tablet or the perfect size for a transitional device? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad app news: iUsers adds accounts for joint iPad users

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 07:05 AM PDT

App for jailbroken iPads might give Apple a decent idea.

Every now and then an application comes along where you think 'Why didn't Apple think of that?' Well the iUsers app for iPad certainly fits that category.

The free app, which works for jailbroken iPads only, allows users who share an iPad to have different accounts. It works by adding a simple user account login screen on the iPad's homescreen like those seen on Windows 7 and Apple Mac OS X.

So, if you have one iPad per household and you don't want her shopping history cluttering your browser records, and you don't want her looking at your you-know-what history then this is the perfect app for you.

The iUsers app will also protect app data, meaning that your logins and high scores will be protected also. The developers say they're hoping to completely separate apps, music and all iPad content in further versions of the software.

Check out the video below to see iUsers in action, and cross your fingers that Apple will introduce this feature in a version of iOS sometime soon.

Google Plus: Circles should worry Facebook, says survey

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 06:18 AM PDT

We asked and you told: What Facebook has to fear from its new Google rival

‘Are you on Google+?’ is the buzz phrase pulsing through the T3 office at the moment, as we all come to terms with having a new social network to belong to, update and worry about. Google’s answer to Facebook has certainly made headlines since launch, but is it worth the effort?

- Poll: Which Google+ feature should Facebook be most worried about?

That’s the question we put to you last week. Or, more specifically, we wanted to know which of the Google+ feature set Facebook should be most afraid of. The results were varied, but the majority (44.81 per cent) said that ‘Circles’ are the killer Google+ feature. Circles is the social network’s defining aspect, letting users categorise their friends and only update to select groups.

‘Hangouts’ (group video chat) came in second place, garnering 23.81 per cent. While Gmail integration and Sparks mopped up the rest, 15.58 per cent of you think that Facebook has nothing to worry about.

On Facebook itself, the conversation was just as varied. “Personally I don't like it,” said Peter Potter. “However, you must think that Google are in a great position to force this upon web masters by threatening rankings.”

A different view was taken by Mark Chesterton, who claimed that “many friends are already taking advantage of the invites I've sent out and everyone seems to like it. Judging by all the various feedback I've read, Facebook should be worried about everything!”

Got further views? Let us know which social network will come out on top on the T3 Twitter feed or Facebook Page.

iPhone 5 pictures leak as prototype handset is outed?

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 04:35 AM PDT

Ahead of the iPhone 5 release date a prototype iPhone 5 handset has reportedly leaked online

Apple’s next-generation smartphone handset has reportedly been caught on camera as Apple blog Apple.Pro points to a Weibo user who claims to have a prototype of the mooted iPhone 5.

The handset touted as the long awaited iPhone 5 is pictured sporting an iPhone 4-esque form factor and running an Apple test software not the iOS 5 operating system expected to land on the mooted iPhone 5 device at its expected September arrival.

- iPhone 5 pictures: Click here to launch gallery

Reportedly boasting a 5-megapixel camera and the A5 processor found in the iPad 2, the leaked handset appears more in line with the rumoured iPhone 4S handset that is claimed to be heading for release alongside the iPhone 5 as a budget iPhone device to target the hoards of affordable Android handsets in the market.

Recent iPhone 5 rumours have suggested the currently mythical handset will launch on August 16th not in September as previously thought and will come equipped with a 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording capabilities and a new slimmer form factor.

What features would you like to see touch down on Apple’s iPhone 5 device? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Zumba Fitness maintains UK Gaming Chart top spot

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:45 AM PDT

Zumba Fitness has once again topped the UK Gaming Charts ahead of movie tie-ins Transformers and Harry Potter

Zumba Fitness is celebrating its fifth consecutive week atop the UK All Format Gaming Charts as new entry Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 fails to make an impact.

Notching up its eighth week in total at the top of the UK Gaming Charts the danced based fitness game has once again beat out competition from the likes of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and DiRT 3 which has exchanged places in this week’s chart to line up second and third respectively.

As Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 breaks pre-order records its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops continues to feature in the top 10 moving up from seventh in the past seven days to fourth ahead of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean and Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars.

Looking to capitalise on the recent movie release of the same name, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 failed to make a dramatic impact on the charts landing in seventh place with EA Sports Active 2, Brink and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood rounding out the top 10.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders break records

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:02 AM PDT

COD: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders are set to break records already surpassing the figures set by Call of Duty: Black Ops

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release date might still be more than three months away but the eagerly awaited gaming release is already lining up as a record breaker, retailer GAME has revealed.

Available for pre-order now ahead of a November 8th release date Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is on course to break the pre-order records set by its predecessor and last year’s COD release, Call of Duty: Black Ops, the highstreet and online retailer has claimed.

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders are already tracking significantly ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops at the same time last year,” Tome Devine, managing director of GAME Group UK announced.

He added: We know that the Call of Duty brand and franchise has the most amazing fan-base and we’ve got some great surprises lined up for those who pre-order with us. We’re looking forward to an incredible launch on 8th November."

Officially unveiled earlier this year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to be a globally popular and globally traversing game with the title’s first video trailer revealing it will boast levels set in New York City, London, Paris and Berlin.

Have you already pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or are you holding out for the release date deals and price wars that are likely to ensue? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Fujitsu IS12T set to be first Windows Phone Mango handset

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:01 AM PDT

New phone comes ahead of mooted September launch.

Windows Phone Mango looks set to make its debut in Japan in August, a month ahead of Microsoft’s much-mooted launch date for the new OS. Nikkei claims that the first phone packing the OS will be the Fujitsu IS12T.

The Japan-only blower, set to be released on the KDDI network, will pack a 3.7-inch LCD panel, with Microsoft’s update operating system keeping things ticking under the hood.

The news certainly comes as a surprise, seeing as the Big M had said itself that winners of its Imagine Cup student competition would get the first updated Windows Phones in September. It had also been suggested that Nokia’s new Windows Phones would be the first to come loaded with Mango.

Women's World Cup Final helps Twitter to record figures

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:34 AM PDT

Twitter records new milestone figures following Women's Football World Cup Final

Social networking site Twitter has announced a new record has been set on the micro-blogging service with a staggering 7,196 tweets being sent per second.

The figure, which equates to 431,760 tweets in a single minute, was recorded last night at the culmination of the Women’s Football World Cup Final that saw Japan defeat tournament favourites USA in a penalty shootout.

"New Tweets per second records! End of the #wwc final: 7196 TPS. And today's end to the Paraguay/Brazil game is now 2nd with 7166 TPS," Twitter’s own official feed announced.

Netflix UK launch coming in 2012?

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:13 AM PDT

Early 2012 launch pegged for UK Netflix.

Netflix looks as if it could finally be making its way to UK shores. That’s according to sources speaking with Hollywood bible Variety, who claim the movie streaming service is planning to launch here in 2012.

While Netflix refused to comment, sources say the company could unveil its UK business in the first quarter of next year. However, with Lovefilm currently sitting pretty on a string of smart TVs and its DVD rental business motoring, it will have difficulty convincing UK punters to join up.

The news is surprising given that just a few weeks ago Netflix released a list of 43 countries it was targeting for expansion. The UK was not among them.

Would you use Netflix if it launched over here? Or are you happy to stick with Lovefilm? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple LED Cinema Display update leaked

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Apple yanks pics from its own website ahead of launch.

Apple’s epic refresh of its Mac range, due as part of its move to OS X Lion, appears to include a new LED Cinema Display. The classy monitor is now a dead cert for an update after an official image on the company’s site appeared to show one connected to a MacBook Pro.

How’s it different to the current model? Well, this new LED Cinema Display is connected to the top-end laptop using Thunderbolt. That tech is not available in the current version of the slick display.

What’s more, the official snap shows the display with the OS X Lion background, rather than Snow Leopard one. That’s now been tweaked, with the UK store showing the current model using the soon-to-be-defunct OS.

Stay tuned right here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for all the details on Apple’s forthcoming updates.

Apple on top of iPad 2 demand at last

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 11:28 PM PDT

Supply of Apple's slate finally in line with demand.

The iPad 2 might have been on shelves for four months, but the Cupertino company has only now got on top of a vast backlog of orders. Punters who want the best-selling slates now only need to wait between one and three days for one to ship from Apple’s online store.

It was only a fortnight ago that Apple was able to bring an end to shipping times of up to two weeks. Even then users were having to wait five days to get their hands on their new purchase.

The wait has been put down to extremely high demand, coupled with parts shortages owing to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami earlier this year.

Is this all you need to convince you its time to stump for an iPad 2? Or are you waiting to see if Apple rolls out a new version, as rumoured, later this year? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

THQ shuts down; three new firms emerge

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Three start-ups from one closure

After Kaos Studios closed down last month, THQ has now finished the notification process for its THQ Warrington studio, which is now closed down.

However, three companies have formed following its closure. One is named D3T, another is a concept team called Alien Apple Studios and the third is unnamed and headed by THQ's former creative and production directors.

Fifty employees were let go, out of which 10 are still working on the PSN release of Warhammer 40K: Kill Team, aimed to come out later in the summer. 36 were let go immediately.

Colin Bell, the studio founder, will be taking a break from the games industry, and told Develop that THQ has done all it could through the consultancy period and has treated its staff with respect.

He said he was proud to have set up and run the studio, and has no regrets. "We've provided around 400 man years of employment over the last eight years and that is no mean feat," he added.

Bell hopes Warhammer 40k Kill Team will be a worthy parting product from the studio.

Google accounts for 92% of all UK internet searches

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 02:30 AM PDT

Google has come out on top in the UK

Analysts Experian Hitwise have released data showing June was Google's best month of 2011, with over 92% of all searches by UK internet users being carried out on its search engine.

Google Sites saw a 1.50% increase in market share of searches in the UK in June, whilst Microsoft Sites lost 1.38% during the month. Yahoo! Sites also lost market share by 0.11%.

"Google has certainly been dominant in search for the last ten years but even by Google’s high standards, to capture 92% of the UK search market is quite an achievement," said Robin Goad, research director, Experian Hitwise.

"In other markets like the US the search distribution is much more even, but in the UK Google has woven itself into the core fabric of Internet usage so much that other players are struggling to keep up. The interesting challenge for the future is how other search engines will react to compete with Google’s ever expanding list of propositions, including the new Google+ social platform," added Goad.

Facebook still retains its position as market leader in its field, but it still remainds UK's most popular social network, and accounts for nearly 54% of all UK visits to a social network.

"Our research has revealed that for every one fan acquired on Facebook, retailers can expect to receive 20 additional visits to their website over the course of a year, so investing in Facebook has real tangible benefits to website traffic, and hence online sales," said Goad.

Apart from Google's 92% market share, 2.88% searches happen with Microsoft's Bing, and 2.96% with Yahoo.

Search engines affecting memory, says research

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 05:37 AM PDT

Poor memory? Blame the internet.

According to research from Columbia University, using internet search engines has affected the way a person's brain remembers things.

The ability to find anything you want on the internet by using search engines like Google makes people remember less.

According to Betsy Sparrow, psychologist, Columbia University, people tend to forget things they can easily find on the internet.

Her paper is titled, "Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips" and the research was carried out in four studies.

In one test, participants were told to type statements; when they were told what they typed was saved, they made less of an effort to recall the things they typed, than when they believed nothing was being saved.

"Perhaps those who teach in any context, be they college professors, doctors or business leaders, will become increasingly focused on imparting greater understanding of ideas and ways of thinking, and less focused on memorisation," said Sparrow

Vodafone mobiles vulnerable to hackers?

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 04:04 AM PDT

Do Vodafone users need to worry or not?

A group known as The Hacker's Choice (THC) has come out with a report saying Vodafone's Sure Signal femtocells can be used to intercept voice calls and text messages.

The Sure Signal femtocells are base stations people can install in their houses if the mobile coverage in the area is weak.

"THC is now able to turn this femtocell into a full-blown 3G/[UMTS]/W-CDMA interception device," the group said in a blog post, with the femtocell having to be within 50 metres of a mobile phone for it to be used to listen to traffic.

A detailed account was given on the blog on how THC modified the femtocell, which could also be used for call fraud and accessing voicemail.

Vodafone issued a statement saying it had already released a patch for the vulnerability in Sure Signal in 2010.

"Overnight on July 12, a claim appeared that hackers had found security loopholes in Vodafone Sure Signal which could compromise the security of Vodafone's network. This is untrue: the Vodafone network has not been compromised," said the statement.

Vodafone said the issue was detected at the start of 2010, and a patch was issued a few weeks later automatically to all Sure Signal boxes.

"As a result, Vodafone Sure Signal customers do not need to take any action to secure their device," the statement added.

It's not very often the folks at RIM get to celebrate much these days, but this week the company announced the 1 billionth BlackBerry app download. Apple is currently at around the 15 billion mark, while Google can boast 4.5m downloads from the Android Market, but that's beside the point. Well, no it isn't really, but still. Yay RIM!

Android app review: Crazy Snowboard
The key to this brilliant extreme sports adventure is its simplicity. Hotmail to block weak passwords and spot spam

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 02:30 AM PDT

Hotmail is beefing up its security in the fight with spam.

Microsoft is now implementing a policy to ban the use of common passwords such as '123456' and 'ilovecats' and 'gogiants' in an effort to prevent hacking.

"This new feature will be rolling out soon, and will prevent you from choosing a very common password when you sign up for an account or when you change your password," said Dick Craddock, group program manager, Hotmail.

Users already using passwords on Microsoft's list of being too common, will be asked to change it to something stronger.

In addition, a new feature has been introduced to Hotmail, where users are allowed to report an account that seems to be sending spam, as being hacked.

The feature will allow users to flag an email as "My friend's been hacked!" which lets Microsoft know of the suspected hacking. Whoever's account user's flag with being hacked will also be sent an email, asking them to change their password.

The spammer will be blocked from using account, and the real user will have to go through steps of recovery to gain control of his/her email again.

Microsoft will expand this feature to other email platforms, saying alerts will also be sent to Google and Yahoo! when a Hotmail users receives spam from either of these mail accounts.

"We’ve had this feature turned on for only a few weeks, and we’ve already identified thousands of customers who have had their accounts hacked and helped those customers reclaim their account," said Craddock.

Which provider do you have an email account with, and what's the spam control on it like? Let us know at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in for more tech news.
