LG: More smartphones to adopt Retina Display

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 04:20 AM PDT

LG says no to OLED, hints at iPad 3 Retina Display.

The iPhone 4's super-crisp Retina Display will not remain an Apple exclusive, according to LG Display chief executive Kwon Young-soo.

Speaking to reporters in Korea, Young-soo said that Samsung "is misleading the market" when it comes to mobile displays, "because OLED displays are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios for smartphones and tablets."

Sour grapes or not, instead of going after the OLED technology that's doing so well for the Samsung Galaxy S2, Young-soo said that LG Display - the branch of LG which manufactures the Retina Display for Apple - will instead start sharing out the LG technology to other smartphone producers. And just to give the iPad 3 rumour pot a bit of a stir, he also mentioned that LG Display were in talks with Apple over incoporating the Retina Display technology into the next iteration of the iPad.

However, this doesn't mean LG is done with OLED technology altogether: "LG Display may release a 55-inch OLED TV set sometime in the latter half of next year", he added. Now that we'd like to see.

LG Optimus 3D lands on Three

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 03:30 AM PDT

LG's flagship 3D mobile available from £35 per month.

LG's flagship handset, the LG Optimus 3D, has officially touched down on Three. After going on sale at the Carphone Warehouse at the beginning of July, that makes Three the first official carrier of the 3D-rocking smartphone.

The Optimus 3D, which we first caught wind of at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, packs not only a 3D, glasses-free display similar to the one found on the Nintendo 3DS, but also dual 5MP cameras on the back for shooting 3D video and snapping 3D stills.

Also under the hood is a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and the now somewhat dated Android 2.2 FroYo.

Three are offering the handset on a 24 month contract from £35 per month, which includes a gratis Optimus 3D, 500 minutes, 5000 texts and 1GB of data.

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

App of the Year: Finalists announced
The crusade to find the T3 Gadget Awards App of the Year moved a step closer this week with the announcement of the finalists. Yes, the fat has been trimmed, leaving just the top six to battle it out for the coveted prize. Will it be GarageBand, Skype, Flipboard, Instapaper, Tiny Wings or Sky News that wins out? It's up to you to decide.

iPhone app news: Google+ makes it onto the App Store
The rise of Google+, the newest social network on the block, gained more pace this week with the Google+ app for iPhone officially landing on the App Store. The free app immediately rose to the top of the iPhone download charts. Presumably, quite a few of the 20m Google+ users have iPhones.

Android app news: NASA launches official app
The Space Program might be at an end now the shuttle Atlantis has returned to Earth, but NASA is keeping busy in the app department, launching an official app for Android. BlackBerry app news: Android App Player leaks early
RIM has been promising a solution to its chronic lack of native PlayBook apps for months now, in the shape of an Android App Player that would enable users to port compatible Market apps onto the BlackBerry tablet. The first signs of that appeared this week with a switfly-removed Beta version of the player appeared on the BlackBerry website.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART

This week we focus on the latest and greatest Android apps

Android app review: Samsung Smart TV
Samung has developed an awesome app for those select few folks who own a Samsung Smart TV AND a Samsung Galaxy SII smartphone. If you tick both of those very distinct boxes you can turn your phone into a TV and take it anywhere in the house. No more pausing Corrie when you go to the toilet.

Android app review: Zombieville USA
This port from the classic iPhone game is an extremely welcome arrival on the Android Market. The premise is that zombies have taken over your town and its your job to stop them by mowing down the undead with a weapon of your choice. This is 2D smartphone platforming at its finest. Android app review: CNN
The US purveyor of quality news has arrived on Android with this mighty fine app. "The app offers a comprehensive account of what is going on in the world day to day, alongside decent photography and a nice dollop of proper journalism," says our reviewer. Read the CNN for Android review

LG's 2011 handset roadmap leaks online

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 02:32 AM PDT

Android, Windows Phone Mango and new Prada handset incoming.

LG's near-future mobile lineup has leaked onto the interwebs, according to the bods at Pocketnow.com. With the Optimus 3D battling it out with the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Sensation for the mobile top spot, LG looks to be going after the middle ground in the smartphone market with its next rash of handsets.

The list of leaked mobile includes the LG Fantasy (pictured), the LG Univa, the LG Victor and the LG Gelato. Luvvies can also look forward to another iteration of LG's Prada phone, reportedly named the "K2".

Hardware specs are a little thin on the ground, but none of these handsets look to be stealing any of the Optimus 3D's thunder. The Univa and Gelato reportedly pack an 800MHz processor and Android 2.3, the Victor a slightly chunkier 1GHz processor. No specs are available for the LG Fantasy, although unlike the other offerings, it will apparently come running Windows Phone Mango.

All these handsets will reportedly rear their heads at some point in 2011, along with another, reportedly more high-end handset known at present as the LG "K".
