News@8pm: iPhone 5 release date and Amazon drop 3DS

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

A teaser video has been leaked revealing the Samsung Galaxy R, displaying much of the functionality possessed by its sibling the Galaxy S II in a marginally smaller shell. In a similar vein, an Android 2.3 update is now available for Samsung’s original tablet the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Despite the rather recent release of OS X Lion, Apple has unveiled a beta version of OS X Lion 10.7.2 complete with iCloud functionality. As well as picking up widespread T3 reader approval for the upgrade, early figures indicate that the new OS is somewhat of an overnight revolution, astonishingly picking up over one million downloads in just 24 hours.

After a string of negative reviews mainly revolving around reports of mass nausea caused by its apparently not so impressive glasses-free 3D screen, Amazon.com has removed the Nintendo 3DS from its online store. On the opposite end of the scale, Microsoft gets set to release the Star Wars themed Xbox 360 console at a potentially bypass inducing £350.

A release date for the iPhone 5 has just been leaked by a ‘reliable source’, possibly hinting for a September 5th arrival. Incidentally, Apple is apparently looking to employ extra staff between August 15th and September 15th, which makes the release of the iPhone 5 extremely likely.

iPad app news: Facebook for iPad found in iPhone code

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 10:28 AM PDT

Hiding in the code of the iPhone app, it's Facebook for iPad.

iPad fans have been waiting for an official Facebook app for going on 18 months now one tech blogger appears to have unearthed the app - hidden within the code of the official Facebook application.

MG Siegler of TechCrunch delved into the back-end of the iPhone app and found a fully executable version of a Facebook iPhone app which he was able to load onto his device.

Siegler, who has been testing out the new, yet-to-be-announced application on his iPad, reckons it uses the tablet format to offer a completely new navigation system, with a menu on the left hand side of the screen. He also reports that when you flip the iPad horizontally your friends lists appears so you can chat with them using the site.

Places arrives in the shape of a big map, on which you can view all of your friends, and the photo viewing experience to that of the iPad's own photo app, according to Siegler.

Facebook is yet to confirm if and when it will be launching an application for iPad, and it's not yet certain whether this will be the version that arrives on the App Store, but you can see a host of screenshots of the hidden Facebook for iPad application here.

Kudos to Mr Siegler. That's some mighty fine detective work.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 UK release coming one day early

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:53 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 launching ealier via Currys and PC World

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is to launch in the UK next week with retailers Currys and PC World to offer the Android tablet a day early through the flagship store on London’s Tottenham Court Road.

Pegged with an August 4th nationwide launch the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is to be made available through the central London location from 5pm on August 3rd allowing eager Londoners the chance to be the first in the UK to pick up the Android Honeycomb device.

Originally unveiled at Mobile World Congress back in February alongside the Samsung Galaxy S II the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has undergone a complete overhaul prior to its overdue release in order to make the tablet more competitive with Apple’s iPad 2 offering.

Having done away with the original form factor that Samsung staff now affectionately refer to as ‘fat tab’, Samsung slimmed down the 10.1-inch tablet whilst removing its impressive 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera in favour of a 3-megapixel offering.

Are you tempted into snapping up the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or is Apple’s iPad 2 too far ahead of the crowd to be challenged? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition confirmed

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 07:54 AM PDT

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition confirmed by Infinity Ward

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 developer Infinity Ward has released the first pictures of the Hardened Edition of the upcoming COD release.

Outing the collectors edition of the next addition to the Call of Duty franchise Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling released a picture of the minimalist packaging design that will host a copy of the game alongside a series of yet unannounced goodies.

"First look at the #MW3 Hardened Edition," Bowling wrote on Twitter, alongside a photograph of the box. "Literally on the factory line. Details on it coming at Call of Duty XP.” Call of Duty XP is to take place in LA on September 2nd and 3rd.

Whilst the Hardened Edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came with a hardbound art book alongside a download token for Call of Duty Classic, last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Hardened Edition featured a premium steelbook casing, an exclusive avatar outfit, old Zombie maps and a Black Ops emblem medal.

With the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release date set as November 8th, retailer GAME last week revealed Modern Warfare 3 is on line to break the pre-order sales currently held by Black Ops.

Will Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 be the best game ever released of fall in the shadow of its predecessors? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

A video teaser of the currently unreleased Samsung Galaxy R handset has leaked online outing the specs of the budget Samsung Galaxy S II handset.

Leaking online ahead of its expected post IFA launch the Samsung Galaxy R teaser video, shown running on the handset itself, has revealed the Android device will land with a slightly smaller screen than its Galaxy S II sibling.

iPhone 5 release date set as September 5th in the US?

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 04:49 AM PDT

Apple iPhone 5 release date leaks ahead of launch hinting at September 5th arrival

Apple is to give an iPhone 5 release date of September 5th new reports have claimed after the handset’s launch date was leaked by a European retailer.

Speaking with Italian iPhone blog iPhone Italia mobile network provider Swisscom revealed it is to launch the next-generation Apple handset on October 5th, reportedly one month after the device is to touch down in the US.

Quoting a “very reliable source” in the form of a senior executive at Swisscom the touted September 5th iPhone 5 release date would fall in line with the many rumours of a September launch that were seemingly backed up by Apple during a quarterly profits call last month.

Whilst a September arrival is expected for the mooted iPhone 5 that is tipped to be launching with 1GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera and a slimmer form factor, the reportedly leaked September 5th arrival would see the handset land on a Monday casting doubts over the validity of such claims.

When do you think we will see the Apple iPhone 5 release date set for? August, September, couldn’t care less? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo 3DS dropped by online retailer Amazon

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 03:36 AM PDT

Amazon has removed the 3DS from its US store after a number of customer complaints

The Nintendo 3DS has been dropped by Amazon in the US with the glasses-free portable 3D games console described as ‘Under Review’ by the online retailer.

Whilst Amazon.co.uk continues to stock the 3D gaming device US gaming fans turning to the online outlet to purchase the portable Nintendo console have found themselves facing no official listing for the 3DS.

"While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page,” the Amazon listing reads, “it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!) We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible."

Having launched in the UK and US in March, the Nintendo 3DS faced a number of issues around its release with health concerns surrounding the device’s glasses-free 3D party piece as users reported feeling nauseous, dizzy and suffering from blurred vision having used the device.

Has the Nintendo 3DS lived up to expectation or fallen wide of the mark? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and vote for the 3DS as the Gaming Gadget of the Year in the T3 Gadget Awards 2011.

Mac OS X Lion upgrade well worth it, says T3 readers

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 03:16 AM PDT

Votes in favour eclipse those opposed to Apple's new operating system

The dust has settled on Lion. The furore has calmed as those clambering for the new Mac operation system are now quietly getting on with exploring its ins and outs. But has everyone upgraded, or are people worried that it might crash their Macs?

Early figures showed that the new OS, available only from the Mac App Store, had in fact gone down a storm – with download numbers exceeding 1 million in just 24 hours. Prior to launch, we asked you to vote on how excited you were about the new OS – the results stack overwhelmingly in Lion’s favour.

77.77 per cent of you voted that you couldn’t wait to upgrade, agreeing with the statement that a new OS for under £30 was absolutely bargainous. A further 6.66 per cent conceded that Lion was the OS that would convince them to swap from PCs to Macs.

The remaining two poll options mopped up the rest of the votes near equally: 8.35 per cent said they were happy with their current version of Mac OS X, while just 7.22 per cent were in opposition to the Mac way, flying the flag for Windows.

Look out for a fresh poll tomorrow in T3’s features section. Have you got any further thoughts? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Apple TV to launch in 55-inch OLED LG displays in 2012?

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 02:49 AM PDT

Apple to further target home entertainment with LG branded Apple TV sets

Apple is to incorporate its Apple TV service into full television sets by the end of 2012 with a 55-inch LG OLED unit the first in-line to sport the iTunes streaming service, new reports have claimed.

Following the re-launch of Apple’s ‘pet project’ last September, Apple TV has risen to popularity with new rumours suggesting the on-demand content service will land in LG television sets next year.

As Apple’s legal battle with Samsung continues to escalate LG, manufacturer of the iPhone 4 Retina display as well as iMac and iPod Touch screens is being tipped as the Cupertino-based company’s likely partner for the first Apple TV incorporating sets.

“There is also speculation that Apple has held discussions with LG Display the Company that makes display screens for MAC products, about the possibility of getting access to a new 55 LG OLED panel that will be used in a new Apple TV that will be capable of delivering music, Video & TV shows over an IP network,” Apple blog 9to5Mac has reported.

Further recent reports have suggested that ahead of the 2012 Apple TV set release Apple plans to launch a Apple HDTV service which will allow users to download and stream Full HD 1080p video content direct from iTunes.

Would an Apple TV set be another must own item from the iPad creator or an overpriced set that offers little new functionality? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple confirms iMac replacement programme

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Apple contacting owners of new iMacs to offer replacement.

Apple has confirmed that a ‘small number’ of iMacs released between May and July this year have faulty hard drives. The 1TB Seagate disks are being replaced by Cupertino at no extra cost.

Users who are affected are being contacted by Apple if they registered their machines with a correct email address when first using the computer. Those who didn’t can check to see if their iMac is faulty by entering the serial number on the replacement programme’s page on the Apple website.

There’s no hurry to get this seen to, as Apple says it’ll replace any dodgy hard drive until 23 July next year. However, we’d suggest getting this sorted quick smart and ensuring everything’s backed-up, just in case the worst does happen and the HDD fails.

Has your iMac got one of the faulty Seagate hard drives? If so, tell us about your experience on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iPhone 5: Apple hiring extra staff in August and September

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 11:45 PM PDT

US staff being hired at same time as extra UK workers.

Apple is looking to hire extra US staff between 15 August and 15 September, suggesting the company is plotting a major launch for the middle of next month. The insider info, snagged by MacRumors, follows the recent discovery that Apple is hiring more UK-based staff from the 16 August.

Of course, this could just be because Cupertino is giving added attention to students heading back to university in the autumn. But where’s the fun in that? Chatter about an August iPhone 5 release has really ramped in recent weeks and it’s hard to deny that Apple’s recruitment drive isn’t related to the introduction of its next-gen blower.

The iPhone 5 continues to be the subject of rampant speculation, with talk of a slight redesign, improved camera and NFC tech. Hopefully all will be revealed in the next few weeks.

Let us know what you think of this story now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony Cyber-shot TX55: world's thinnest compact camera outed

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 11:32 PM PDT

SD card support finally lands on a Sony compact.

Sony has officially pulled the wrappers off of its new Cyber-shot TX55 compact camera, a shooter it claims is the thinnest compact on the market. The 12.2mm thin snapper may be size zero, but it’s fully loaded with top-end specs to make images and movies look stunning.

Under the hood you’ll find Sony’s latest Exmor sensor, packing in 16.2 megapixels for high resolution shooting. That’s amped up to 42.9 megapixels when using high resolution mode as part of the camera’s Intelligent Sweep Panorama feature.

Full HD recording is also on board, with support for 16GB Memory Sticks or 8GB SD cards, so you can cram it full of your hi-def handiwork. You can also take 3D stills and clips using the cameras dedicated three-dimensional features, while the 5x optical zoom can be ramped up to 10x using the ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ function. The Big S reckons this boosts magnification without hitting the pixel count. We’ll see about that when we take one for a spin soon.

A series of special filters to give your pics a unique look, without having to tweak them in Photoshop, complete the package. The TX55 is due to land later this summer, with Sony yet to reveal official UK pricing.
