iPhone 5 case design offers new form factor hints
A case design claimed to be for the iPhone would see a huge design departure from the iPhone 4. The cases, made by a Chinese manufacturer would suggest a larger home button a bigger screen and curved edges similar to what we saw with the iPhone 3GS. We're not too convinced.

Motorola Xoom price cut sees Android tab drop below £400

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 08:40 AM PDT

The Motorola Xoom UK price has come

Online retailer Amazon has slashed the price of the Motorola Xoom with the first device to sport Google’s tablet-centric Android Honeycomb OS now available under the £400 mark.

Previously priced at a smidge under £480 those looking to forgo the market dominating Apple iPad 2 and plump for an Android tablet can now pick up the 32GB Wi-Fi only Motorola Xoom for just £394.95.

As well as running Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS the Motorola Xoom boasts a 1GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM, a 10-inch 1280 x 800p display and 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities.

Whilst the 32GB Wi-Fi Xoom is now available below £400, the price cuts, which come a week ahead of the launch of the Google Honeycomb powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, also see the Wi-Fi + 3G model lose a few pounds dropping from £580 down to £554.99.

Can the Motorola Xoom or other similar Android tablets truly compete with Apple’s iPad 2 or is the Cupertino device too far ahead? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad 3 release to see Apple cut component pricing?

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 08:05 AM PDT

Apple's iPad 3 is reportedly set to feature cut-priced parts to make it more competitive

Apple is to use lower priced components in the iPad 3 to ensure the third-generation tablet remains price competitive with the influx of new Android tablets, new reports have claimed.

Whilst the retail cost to consumers remained the same Apple reportedly saw component prices increasing from the original iPad to the second-generation model thanks to the inclusion of cameras and a reduction in available touchscreen panels. New reports, however, suggest the Cupertino-based company is to once again reduce costs.

“Apple is now “more willing” to ship various integrated circuit modules from Taiwan-based IC design houses as a way of reducing iPad’s bill of material,” anonymous sources to a Digitimes report have claimed.

They added: “Apple is now more willing to adopt IC solutions from Taiwan-based IC design houses as it is adjusting the cost structure for iPad tablets in order to compete with an array of tablet PCs to be launched by rivals in the second half of 2011.”

Expected to stick to its annual product cycle and launch the iPad 3 around May of next year, recent rumours have suggested Apple will add a Retina display to the next-gen tablet, a feature that will no doubt up the device’s price point.

What features would you like to see included in the mooted Apple iPad 3? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The Gadget Show hosts battle it out in the T3 Gadget Awards

T3 Gadget Awards 2011 sees Suzi Perry, Jason Bradbury and Pollyanna Woodward fight for Gadget Personality of the Year

With the finalists for the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 announced last week, hosts of the popular Channel 5 tech series The Gadget Show are battling it out for the title of the T3 Gadget Personality of the Year.

Having won the coveted prize during last year’s T3 Gadget Awards, Gadget Show host Suzi Perry is looking to make it a double in 2011 whilst co-hosts on the hugely popular Channel 5 show Jason Bradbury and Pollyanna Woodward look to take the prize for themselves.

Making new consumer tech and a flurry of gadget upstarts easily accessible to a mass audience the three Gadget Show hosts made the cut from the longlist due to their unwavering knowledge of all things tech and their ability to start tech trends within the UK.

Whilst the Gadget Show hosts make up a large portion of the 10 category finalists they will not have it all their own way in a bid to take the Gadget Personality of the Year award back to the broadcaster. 2009 winner Stephen Fry has once again made the final whilst globally recognised musicians Lady Gaga and Dr. Dre make the cut thanks to their headphone lines and tie-ins with tech companies.

In a battle of the broadcasters the BBC’s Spencer Kelly and Rory Cellan-Jones both make the final 10 with Virgin head Sir Richard Branson and Facebook founder Marc Zuckerberg completing the Gadget Personality roll call.

Who would you like to see leave the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 with the Gadget Personality of the Year award? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and head on over to the T3 Gadget Awards site to make your vote official.

Apple App Store to be passed by Android Market in 2012

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 04:40 AM PDT

Google's Android Market is to become the leading App provider in 2012 reports suggest

Apple’s App Store is to be overtaken in terms of quarterly sales by Google’s Android Market before the end of 2012, new figures from Strategy Analytics have claimed.

Having pioneered the mobile application industry and sparked a flurry of imitation services, Apple’s App Store is set to be surpassed by Google’s Android offering next year as the growing number of third party Android app outlets offer users more ways to fill their mobile and tablet devices.

Whilst Apple earlier this month recorded its 15 billionth app download Android ended June by revealing its 4.5 billionth app download having claimed the final billion downloads were recorded within just 60 days.

Strategy Analytics last week claimed that Apple’s share of the tablet market dropped by almost 30 per cent during the past quarter a period that reportedly saw Google’s Android OS make waves on the tablet scene thanks to the likes of the Motorola Xoom, HTC Flyer and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Apple outs iOS 4.3.5, iOS 5 nears

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 03:19 AM PDT

iOS 5 expected to make debut in September.

iOS 5 might be the talk of the town right now. But Apple has just released its latest version of iOS 4. iOS 4.3.5 doesn’t offer a major boost, but offers beefed up security for the iPhone and iPad.

The security issue relates to certificate chain validation and the update is advisable for all iOS users. The software boost works on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, both the iPad and iPad 2 and the third and fourth generation iPod touch.

This will likely be one of the last updates to iOS before the big release of iOS 5 in the next few months. That change will bring improved notifications and deep Twitter integration to the mix.

HTC Bliss Android phone spied

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT

No specs, but plenty of gossip surrounding gimmicky Android blower.

HTC’s roster of Android phones looks all set to expand, with a new female-focused Android handset, called the HTC Bliss, leaking across the web. This is the first pic of the device, which as you can see comes with its own cradle.

The image, snagged by Pocketnow, backs up plenty of chatter surrounding the device. Word is it’ll have a special notification charm attached to the device so users know when they’ve got an email, text or calendar reminder. The idea is that it’ll make it easier to pull the phone from a bag.

The Bliss is apparently being lined up for the Verizon network in the US. Whether it’ll catch on when most gadget makers have realised that female-focused products are largely redundant and in most cases downright offensive remains to be seen.

Tell us what you think of HTC’s plans for the Bliss over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Microsoft releases Avatar Kinect

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 01:08 AM PDT

Free for all Xbox 360 users until 8 September.

Microsoft’s Avatar Kinect, trailed way back at the start of the year and talked up at E3, has finally gone live. The new service allows users to have virtual meet-ups, with the Kinect camera tracking facial expressions to make chats realistic.

What’s more users can record their virtual chats and see themselves as their avatar on what the Big M is calling its 3D stages. There are 24 different themed 3D stages where users can hang out.

Microsoft is hoping that users will download and share their virtual hook-ups, showing the world just how great Kinect is. With millions of the motion-sensing cameras already sold, it’s unlikely that many young gamers need convincing.

Avatar Kinect is for Xbox Live Gold members only, but is free for all until the 8 September. Let us know how you get on with it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

New BlackBerry set for launch today

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 11:22 PM PDT

News comes just hours after RIM confirms it's laying off 2,000 staff.

RIM appears set to release an all-new BlackBerry today, using its official Facebook page to talk up a phone that’s “social all over” and promising to unveil the details imminently.

In a somewhat cloying update, posted late last night, the BlackBerry maker said, “Hey Team BlackBerry, what's shiny, new and social all over? We want to tell you all about it. Can you guess what it might be? Tune in tomorrow for details!”

The chances are this will be the BlackBerry Torch 2, or the much-touted BlackBerry Touch. The company’s joint CEOs have both said previously that exciting new phones would be outed over the summer.

Whatever the phone is, it’ll have to be very special to save RIM. The company has only just laid off 2,000 staff and posted appalling results for the previous quarter. What do you think this new BlackBerry will be? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
