iPad 3 release to see Apple cut component pricing? Posted: 26 Jul 2011 08:05 AM PDT
Apple's iPad 3 is reportedly set to feature cut-priced parts to make it more competitive Apple is to use lower priced components in the iPad 3 to ensure the third-generation tablet remains price competitive with the influx of new Android tablets, new reports have claimed.
Whilst the retail cost to consumers remained the same Apple reportedly saw component prices increasing from the original iPad to the second-generation model thanks to the inclusion of cameras and a reduction in available touchscreen panels. New reports, however, suggest the Cupertino-based company is to once again reduce costs.
They added: “Apple is now more willing to adopt IC solutions from Taiwan-based IC design houses as it is adjusting the cost structure for iPad tablets in order to compete with an array of tablet PCs to be launched by rivals in the second half of 2011.”
Expected to stick to its annual product cycle and launch the iPad 3 around May of next year, recent rumours have suggested Apple will add a Retina display to the next-gen tablet, a feature that will no doubt up the device’s price point.

Apple App Store to be passed by Android Market in 2012 Posted: 26 Jul 2011 04:40 AM PDT
Google's Android Market is to become the leading App provider in 2012 reports suggest Apple’s App Store is to be overtaken in terms of quarterly sales by Google’s Android Market before the end of 2012, new figures from Strategy Analytics have claimed.
Having pioneered the mobile application industry and sparked a flurry of imitation services, Apple’s App Store is set to be surpassed by Google’s Android offering next year as the growing number of third party Android app outlets offer users more ways to fill their mobile and tablet devices.
Strategy Analytics last week claimed that Apple’s share of the tablet market dropped by almost 30 per cent during the past quarter a period that reportedly saw Google’s Android OS make waves on the tablet scene thanks to the likes of the Motorola Xoom, HTC Flyer and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

iOS 5 expected to make debut in September. iOS 5 might be the talk of the town right now. But Apple has just released its latest version of iOS 4. iOS 4.3.5 doesn’t offer a major boost, but offers beefed up security for the iPhone and iPad.
The security issue relates to certificate chain validation and the update is advisable for all iOS users. The software boost works on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, both the iPad and iPad 2 and the third and fourth generation iPod touch.
This will likely be one of the last updates to iOS before the big release of iOS 5 in the next few months. That change will bring improved notifications and deep Twitter integration to the mix.

No specs, but plenty of gossip surrounding gimmicky Android blower. HTC’s roster of Android phones looks all set to expand, with a new female-focused Android handset, called the HTC Bliss, leaking across the web. This is the first pic of the device, which as you can see comes with its own cradle.
The image, snagged by Pocketnow, backs up plenty of chatter surrounding the device. Word is it’ll have a special notification charm attached to the device so users know when they’ve got an email, text or calendar reminder. The idea is that it’ll make it easier to pull the phone from a bag.
The Bliss is apparently being lined up for the Verizon network in the US. Whether it’ll catch on when most gadget makers have realised that female-focused products are largely redundant and in most cases downright offensive remains to be seen.

Microsoft releases Avatar Kinect Posted: 26 Jul 2011 01:08 AM PDT
Free for all Xbox 360 users until 8 September. Microsoft’s Avatar Kinect, trailed way back at the start of the year and talked up at E3, has finally gone live. The new service allows users to have virtual meet-ups, with the Kinect camera tracking facial expressions to make chats realistic.
What’s more users can record their virtual chats and see themselves as their avatar on what the Big M is calling its 3D stages. There are 24 different themed 3D stages where users can hang out.
Microsoft is hoping that users will download and share their virtual hook-ups, showing the world just how great Kinect is. With millions of the motion-sensing cameras already sold, it’s unlikely that many young gamers need convincing.
Avatar Kinect is for Xbox Live Gold members only, but is free for all until the 8 September. Let us know how you get on with it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

New BlackBerry set for launch today Posted: 25 Jul 2011 11:22 PM PDT
News comes just hours after RIM confirms it's laying off 2,000 staff. RIM appears set to release an all-new BlackBerry today, using its official Facebook page to talk up a phone that’s “social all over” and promising to unveil the details imminently.
In a somewhat cloying update, posted late last night, the BlackBerry maker said, “Hey Team BlackBerry, what's shiny, new and social all over? We want to tell you all about it. Can you guess what it might be? Tune in tomorrow for details!”
The chances are this will be the BlackBerry Torch 2, or the much-touted BlackBerry Touch. The company’s joint CEOs have both said previously that exciting new phones would be outed over the summer.
Whatever the phone is, it’ll have to be very special to save RIM. The company has only just laid off 2,000 staff and posted appalling results for the previous quarter. What do you think this new BlackBerry will be? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
