News@8pm: White Samsung Galaxy S2 and 3DS woes

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

A rather tasty looking pic of a WHITE Samsung Galaxy S II was leaked online today, this coming just days after the phones offical announcement. The mobile retailer Clove announced that the popular 16 GB phone would be available and come in white sometime in mid August. Unfortunately though, there's bad news for the impatient amongst you since Sumsung instead confirmed today that the phone will be released on September 1st.

Following recent rumours of 'mystery delays' in the manufacturing of its new EVO 3D phone, HTC confirmed today that the reports were in fact true. The phone's UK release date has since been pushed back to September. And in other 3D news, further reports revealed today that Nintendo's dramatic decision to cut the price of its 3DS console will result in a loss on each 3DS sold. Ouch!

A report came out today that Apple has a cash reserve of $76.4 billion, a figure that astonishingly, is larger than the entire reserve of the US Government. And that figure looks likely to get even bigger very soon, since what appears to be a photo of Apple's iPhone 5 surfaced today, making that rumoured September release look very reliable indeed.

And last but certainly not least, in gaming news, the Call of Duty championships commence next month, the winner of which will go on to represent Britain in a world event in Los Angeles. And Forza 4 screenshots were released today depicting Top Gear's Reasonably Priced Car Test Track, and not only that, there is apparently be a mode that allows you to actually take on the Stig himself. Great stuff.

Apple richer than American government

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 08:19 AM PDT

Apple is £1.6 billion richer than the US government, official figures reveal. And with the country spending more money than it earns per month, that gap looks set to widen

Perhaps Steve Jobs should run for president?

According to official figures released by the US treasury, Apple has more cash to spend than the United States Government. With a reserve of $76.4 billion (£46.9bn), the tech juggernaut's healthy bank balance overshadows that of the governors of the world's largest economy, which currently has $73.7 billion (£45.3bn) in cash reserves.

The news comes just as President Obama is under tremendous pressure to tackle the country's debt crisis, otherwise it could face defaulting on its loans for the first time in its history.

Following July's quarterly profits call which saw Cupertino-based Apple achieve a 125 percent rise in profits in the three months running up to June, the company’s cash reserves exceed that of the US government's by £1.6 billion.

And that gap looks set to widen with the US Treasury revealing that the US is currently spending $200 billion (£122 billion) per month more than what it collects.

Whilst Apple’s cash reserves have been made open knowledge, it is unknown what the company plans to do with the money. However, that hasn't stopped many from speculating.

"Apple keeps its cards close to its chest," says Daniel Ashdown, an Analyst at Juniper Research. “Industry watchers believe that it is building up a war chest to be used for strategic acquisitions of other businesses, and to secure technology patents.”

Weird News: Killer codes cracked and pervy landlords

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 06:13 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last 7 days

Apple launching TVs?

One of the more outlandish Apple rumours in recent memory, this. We’ve been spoon-fed gossip that the iPhone maker will soon be ditching the Apple TV box, opting instead to spin out enormous 55-inch TVs with the iTunes software built in. Is there that much anodised aluminium in the world?

PES 2012 plays a dangerous game

If you’re looking to launch a rival to what will be one of the biggest games of the year, when would you have it land on the shelves? Presumbaly before said rival? Nope. Konami’s made a very brave move, in setting PES 2012’s release date a couple of weeks after FIFA 2012, which puts it right in the middle of the month, miles from a payday that sees Battlefield 3 released. Brave indeed.

Stealing cars via SMS
Security researchers have found a way to unlock the doors on specific models of cars via text message. This is worrying. Seeing as the kind of hackers that are making headlines seem to be growing in number and power daily, surely it’s only a matter of time before they’ve worked out how to remotely destroy your entire life. If this is where NFC tech is headed, we’re not all that keen.

Zodiac killer mystery solved?
Must be embarrassing if, in your work as a professional code cracker, you spend your entire career trying to figure out the key to the Zodiac Killer’s scrawls, only for some rank amateur to come along and claim he’s sorted it out in an afternoon. Is this what the killer’s ramblings actually meant? Err… we dunno.

“Yeah, I hate my landlord”
You may think you’ve got a pretty poor landlord. That crack in the window has been there for months, and the weird smell coming from the attic remains despite your tireless moaning. But you should probably be thankful that you’re not being spied on by a complex series of hidden cameras, like these girls…

Google thinks you should grow up

Outrage! Shock! Confusion! Just three of the many reactions to the fact that Google+ seemed to be deleting accounts at random earlier this week. It was all getting a bit emotional, until the big G finally revealed its reasoning: Your stupid nickname. Turns out that – as an anti-spam measure – Google only wants people using their real names, as opposed to things like CoolGuy0001, GeekZOMG and the like. Fascists!

Apple outs iPod Touch
Apple normally drums up a bit of hysteria before announcing a new product, so it was most unlike the FruitCorp to silently unveil a new, 3G-packing iPod Touch by just dumping it on one obscure corner of its site, this week. Odd behaviour or colossal mistake? We hope no one’s been fired.

And finally…

The Apple Store challenge
Speaking of Apple, have you ever noticed that you seem to be able to get away with doing whatever the hell you like in the Apple Stores? This guy has…

iPhone 5 picture leak claims handset was spotted in use

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 04:49 AM PDT

Ahead of the iPhone 5 release date, set for the end of September, new pictures supposedly of the much anticipated Apple handset have leaked online

A mystery Apple device that is being tipped as the yet unannounced iPhone 5 has been spotted in San Francisco in the hands of an Apple employee, new reports have claimed.

The latest in a recent flurry of claimed iPhone 5 pictures sees what is being touted as the next-generation iPhone being used by a reported Apple employee ahead of the expected iPhone 5 release date in September.

The picture, which comes courtesy of Apple blog 9to5Mac shows what appears to be a smartphone handset with Apple branding and a new curved metal, rounded-edged form factor fitting with the design that has been repeatedly rumoured in recent weeks and months.

Whilst the validity of this claim cannot be tested, the recent increase in reported iPhone 5 leaks and spotted outings would suggest the handset, which is expected to have a dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera, could be with us in a matter of weeks.

Is this the eagerly awaited iPhone 5 or nothing more than an elaborate hoax and another sham rumour? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

3DS price drop: Nintendo to lose money on each unit sold

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 04:15 AM PDT

Nintendo 3DS price cut to result in Nintendo losing money on each 3D console sold

Having announced it is to slash the price of the Nintendo 3DS in the wake of poor sales it has been revealed that Nintendo will now make a loss on each of its 3D consoles sold.

With just 710,000 3DS consoles being sold worldwide in the three month period up to June Nintendo announced earlier this week that it is to lower the price of the 3DS in all markets with the UK pricing set to drop by around a third.

Bloomberg’s Japanese operation, however, these hefty price cuts will see Nintendo make a loss on each hardware unit sold with profits needing to be recouped via increased software sales.

Whilst Nintendo has previously operated on hardware profits, Sony and Microsoft already record losses on sales of PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles respectively with profits made later from software licensing.

Will a reduced price point tempt you into splashing out on the Nintendo 3DS? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy S II white picture leaks ahead of launch

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 03:30 AM PDT

It looks al'white! Pictures of Samsung's new white Galaxy S II handset leak online, ahead of its August 15th release date - and it doesn't look bad either!

Just days after online mobile phone retailer Clove announced that a white Samsung Galaxy S II will launch in August, official looking images of the lighter-hued handset have leaked online.

“We can confirm that the massively popular Samsung Galaxy S II 16GB will be available from Clove in WHITE from approximately the 15th August,” the phone retailer announced via a blog post on Wednesday.

Looking set to follow in the footsteps of Apple’s iPhone 4, albeit in more timely fashion, Samsung is expected to launch a white rendition of its market leading Galaxy S II handset next month with the device to sport the same 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and 8-megapixel camera as its black counterpart.

Earlier this week Samsung announced that in just 85 days from launch it had shifted more than 5 million Galaxy S II handsets worldwide, all before the Android device launches in the US.

Tech Today: First iPhone 5 picture revealed

It's the tech news that broke after you logged-off.

First pictures of the Apple iPhone 5 uncovered?
An Apple employee has been snapped on a train in San Francisco wielding what looks like a brand new, previously unseen iPhone (pictured). The photographer, who revealed his picture to the 9to5Mac site said that the pictures didn't do the device any justice. From what we can make out, the handset looks to have a curved back, which would back up the design of purported iPhone 5 cases revealed earlier this week.

You're not living the American dream unless you've been sued at least once and it took all of two weeks for Spotify to feel the wrath of the legal culture in the US. The music streaming giant has been issued with a patent infringement writ by the PacketVideo service, which claims - in very complicated legal jargon - that Spotify is stepping on its toes by, well, streaming music.
