News@8pm: HTC to pass RIM and iPhone 5 in September? Posted: 05 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.
Rumours are gaining momentum by the day that Apple plans to release the iPhone 5 in September, and has supposedly ordered 15 million units of the new smartphone from Taiwanese manufacturer Pegatron Technologies. The iPhone 5 is expected to be accompanied by the iPad 3, though if this is the case then the latter could face tough competition from Sony as its S1 and S2 tablets are also expected to become available in September. Meanwhile, a leak of HP's product release plans suggests the American firm's intentions to release a 64GB TouchPad in August.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vodafone has released an update for Desire S users that should fix a number of problems with the handset's native applications. Rival network Three has confirmed that it will be offering the Nokia X7, as the new symbian handset is to be made available immediately. HTC is set to overtake Blackberry creator RIM in total smartphone sales by next year, thanks to the success of handsets such as the Desire, Wildfire and Sensation.
Toshiba has unveiled the Qosmio F750 3D, which will be the world’s first glasses-free 3D laptop when it launches in August of this year. Also arriving soon should be the new MacBook Air, albeit with another new solid state drive even though Apple plumped for high speed Toshiba SSDs less than a year ago.
L.A. Noire became one of the success stories of the year so far when it finally hit the charts after seven years in development. A number of leaked emails appear to suggest that developers Team Bondi will not have the support of Rockstar Games for the eagerly anticipated sequel, a development that could leave L.A. Noire 2 dead in the water.
Finally, Google’s Realtime Search will no longer include Twitter updates as the agreement between the two ended on July 2nd. Google instead intends to link in real-time data from Google+ as well as a number of other sources. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
iPhone 5 specs will only see minor updates on iPhone 4 Posted: 05 Jul 2011 08:33 AM PDT
Apple's delayed iPhone 5 handset will see a September release date with only minor updates to the device's hardware Apple will only make minor alterations in the next refresh of its iPhone handset as the iPhone 5 “does not seem to have any major updates from the iPhone 4”, new reports have suggested.
The claims, which come courtesy of Taiwanese tech blog Digitimes suggest that the next-generation Apple handset which missed the company’s usual annual product cycle and a WWDC unveiling last month will pose only minor updates from its predecessor, the still hugely popular Apple iPhone 4.
Further recent iPhone 5 rumours have seen the mooted handset pegged as landing with a new slimmer form factor with a larger 720p HD display and metal casing whilst others have suggested the device will touch down sporting an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities, a 1GHz dual-core processor and the recently announced iOS 5 operating system.
What features would you like to see Apple include in the upcoming iPhone 5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy Z release date: Will not launch in the UK Posted: 05 Jul 2011 07:56 AM PDT
Budget-friendly Samsung Galaxy not coming to the UK. Just days after new pictures of the Samsung Galaxy Z handset appeared online Samsung has announced that Sammy fans in Blighty will not be seeing the cut-down version of the Galaxy S II on these fair shores anytime soon. "There are currently no plans to launch the Galaxy Z in the UK market" a spokesperson for Samsung has revealed to T3.
The Galaxy Z looked to be a more budget-friendly version of the UK's current leading smartphone, the Galaxy S II. With a 1GHz dual-core processor, the Galaxy Z is slightly out-specced by its 1.2GHz-toting bigger brother, with the handset's display also on the receiving end of a downgrade having been cut from a retina-burning Super AMOLED screen to a more standard Super Clear LCD. The camera also takes a hit in the name of pricing, dropping from 8-megapixels to a lowly 5.
Are you disappointed that the Samsung Galaxy Z will not be hitting UK stores in the near future forcing consumers to splash out on the premium priced Galaxy S II? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Vodafone HTC Desire S update released Posted: 05 Jul 2011 03:01 AM PDT
Peep and SMS niggles ironed out. Vodafone has unleashed a new update for Desire S owners using the network. The software bump is a simple tweak rather than a change to the version of Android on the device, but should make the top-end blower work better.
Changes in the update include improved HTC Peep, the native Twitter client which forms part of HTC Sense, as well as a new Desk Dock mode and a fix to an SMS problem which caused the sender’s details to be shown incorrectly.
The update comes in two parts, with Vodafone Desire S owners prompted to install an update for the phone’s updater, followed by a message saying the software itself is available.
Have you got a Desire S from Vodafone? Let us know how the update goes on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

LA Noire: Rockstar won't publish next game by developer Posted: 05 Jul 2011 02:21 AM PDT
No backing from GTA maker for next Team Bondi game. What does it mean for LA Noire 2? Team Bondi, the developer behind LA Noire, appears to have irrevocably lost the support of the title’s publisher, Rockstar Games. Word is that the latter will not publish Team Bondi’s next game, meaning it will be looking elsewhere for a backer for LA Noire 2.
The news comes from a series of leaked emails written by Team Bondi staffers and accessed by Gamesindustry.biz. The raft of messages focus on poor working practices and claims that Rockstar had to ride to Team Bondi’s rescue on a number of occasions in order to ensure LA Noire’s eventual release. The game took a colossal seven years to make.
One ex-staffer from Team Bondi said, “I've heard a lot about Rockstar's disdain for Team Bondi, and it has been made quite clear that they will not publish Team Bondi's next game.”
The same person goes on to say, “Rockstar are the ones who saved the project. They continued to sink money into LA Noire, and their marketing was fantastic. Without their continued support, Team Bondi would have gone under several years ago."
What this means for LA Noire 2 remains a mystery. But those hoping for a quick fire sequel will be disappointed. Without the backing of Rockstar and a slew of bad publicity, Team Bondi, the next edition of the bestseller could be many years away. Google Realtime Search Twitter results killed off Posted: 05 Jul 2011 01:00 AM PDT
Google and Twitter deal comes to an end, as Big G switches focus to Google+. Google’s Realtime Search, which saw live, continuous Twitter updates appear as part of search results, will no longer include tweets. The reason? Twitter and Google’s hook-up simply expired on 2 July.
The Big G has said that it will now aim to replace Twitter-supplied news with that from its new Google+ social network, as well as, “…realtime data from a variety of sources.”
Twitter and Google say this isn’t war and that the two tech titans will work on various projects away from Realtime Search. It does, however, make live information delivered through Google a lot less richer.

iPhone 5: Apple orders 15 million new phones Posted: 04 Jul 2011 11:42 PM PDT
New report claims Apple is gearing up for major release in September. The iPhone 5’s release date is edging ever closer, with Apple reportedly ordering 15 million units of the next-gen smartphone. That’s according to Digitimes, which says it’s been told about Cupertino’s plans by, “…sources from upstream component makers.”
The report says Jobs and co have sent word to Taiwanese gadget manufacturer Pegatron Technologies that they want the new phones primed and ready to go by September. Pegatron has not commented, but having been key in the production of the iPhone 4, it’s highly likely that it’s been chosen once again to make the new version of the best-selling blower.
Digitimes says the iPhone 5 will not represent a “major update”, seemingly reiterating rumours that Apple is working on a minor boost rather than a complete overhaul.
For all the latest on the iPhone 5, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New MacBook Air: speedier hard drives planned Posted: 04 Jul 2011 11:24 PM PDT
Move comes less than a year after Apple plumped for high-speed Toshiba SSDs. Apple’s new MacBook Air will come with new, lightning fast solid state drives. That’s the word from fan site Macotokara, which has been speaking with a source at, “…an Asian electronics component company,” about the plans.
The new SSD will run at a mind-blowing 400MBps and will be smaller than the current version, supplied by Samsung. Toshiba built the first run of SSDs for 2010’s pared down line of MacBook Airs.
What’s more, the hard drive will be soldered onto the base circuit of the new MacBook Air, making it even harder for users to upgrade or change it if they want to. Thunderbolt connectivity and Intel’s newest processors are expected to join the new hard drive under the hood of the updated machine.
When will the new Air be on shelves? It seems Apple is happy to keep users waiting, with multiple sources claiming it won’t be released until Mac OS X Lion is also available. Expect that at the end of July or beginning of August.
