iPhone app news: Thrutu brings in-call multitasking to iOS

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 09:11 AM PDT

Easily share vital information during the call.

The innovative in-call multitasking app Thrutu has arrived on the App Store after proving to be a major success on the Android platform.

The idea behind Thrutu is to enable the simple sharing of information during a phonecall between two users. For example, you can send someone your location information or a photograph from your gallery while you're on the phone to them.

You can also take a photo from the camera and then send it, share a contact or even send a vibrating alert to the other person's phone.

The app will come in handy when you're meeting someone who doesn't know where you are, as you can instantly send someone the location details during the conversation and view each other on a live map.

If you receive a call from another Thrutu user the app will automatically open, but otherwise you'll need to open the application and then make the call in order to make use of the functionality.

The iOS launch comes after the app achieved over 250,000 downloads on the Android Market. It's free to download and it's available from today

Apple MacBook white dropped from Mac line-up

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 07:37 AM PDT

Apple's MacBook Air refresh has seen the white plastic MacBook cut from the product line-up

Apple has seemingly scrapped the hugely popular Apple MacBook white from its range of iconic computers with the ultra-thin MacBook Air looking to have replaced the plastic-clad machine.

Following the official unveiling of the refreshed range of MacBook Airs, Mac Minis and the new Mac OS X Lion operating system, Apple’s online store returned online from maintenance with the former MacBook devices omitted from the line-up.

Whilst the MacBook was an iconic member of the Apple family the entry level machine had become dated as of late with the aluminium encased MacBook Pro and MacBook Air giving the MacBook’s plastic aesthetic a cheapened look.

"It was the most popular mac and an iconic piece of kit," said MacFormat editor Graham Barlow. "I'm sorry to see 'Apple white' removed from Apple's Mac line-up."

With the base model MacBook Air now £849 the MacBook has been carefully squeezed out of the product roll call by Apple although the Cupertino-based firm has yet to formally confirm its culling.

Will the MacBook Air make a suitable replacement to the iconic Apple MacBook white? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release date hinted at by Apple as September

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 03:30 AM PDT

Apple has hinted at a September iPhone 5 arrival during a recent profits call

Apple has hinted at the iPhone 5 release date adding further backing to belief the fifth-generation Apple handset will launch in September suggesting the device will land before the end of Q3.

Whilst revealing record iPhone and iPad quarterly sales that saw the company shift more than 20 million of its market leading smartphones in the past three months Apple has hinted at an imminent new addition to the iDevice family making reference to a “future product transition”.

Having been quizzed on his predicted 12% decline in revenue for the upcoming third quarter concluding at the end of September, Apple’s Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer suggested the drop in profits would be caused by new product arrivals.

"A lot going on in the fall with iOS 5 and iCloud," Oppenheimer announced adding a “future product transition that we will not talk about today" will have an impact on the quarter’s sales figures.

Recent iPhone 5 rumours have suggested the mooted handset will touch down running the same 1GHz dual-core A5 processor found in the iPad 2 alongside an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p  Full HD video recording capabilities.

Earlier this week pictures of a reported iPhone 5 prototype handset leaked online claiming to reveal the upcoming handset’s iPhone 4-esque form factor.

What features does the iPhone 5 handset need to boast in order to reclaim top spot in the fiercely competitive smartphone market? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nikon D3 and D700 replacements coming August

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 03:07 AM PDT

Names yet to be revealed, but expect killer specs when new Nikons officially land.

Nikon is said to be priming two new top-end, full-frame DSLRs for release in August. The duo are set to replace the current top-end DS and D700, according to fan site Nikon Rumors.

A Nikon Rumors reader, who’d spoken with dealers at a special event, claimed that the new models would be “significantly different” to the current D3 and D700 in terms of spec and design.

On top of that, one will be aimed at “expert” snappers, while another will be made for “pros”. Either way, each one will only be meant for those who take their photography a touch more seriously than your average, compact-wielding consumer.

10-inch HTC Puccini tablet leaks as Apple iPad 2 rival

HTC’s expected 10-inch tablet the HTC Puccini has leaked in the US after blueprints for the device emerged during testing at the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

With all electrical devices required to pass FCC testing prior to release in the US, the latest in a long line of leaks from the commission has revealed the 10-inch HTC Puccini tablet could be heading for release in the near future.

Google+ iPhone app outed

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 02:11 AM PDT

Social network app given green light by Apple.

Google has officially released its Google+ iPhone app, with Apple agreeing to include the social network’s mobile offering in the App Store. However, for now it’s iPhone only, with no iPad or iPod touch versions available.

The Big G’s Vic Gundotra announced the app’s arrival yesterday via Google+, saying, “iPhone, meet Google+. Share just the right stuff, with just the right circles.” The app means users can tweak messages to friends in different circles, upload and look at photos and play around with their Google profile.

While the lack of an iPad or iPod touch version does grate, Google has said it’s “working quickly” on updates which will bring Google+ to Apple’s other iOS devices.

White MacBook being killed off?

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 01:01 AM PDT

Analyst claims supplies are running so low that white MacBook could be gone by August.

The white MacBook, so long Apple’s entry level laptop, appears to be on its way out. That’s according to Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has told AppleInsider that supplies of the device appear set to run out in August.

It had been assumed that a new MacBook would be released to coincide with the launch of Mac OS X Lion today. Supplies have been low or non-existent for weeks. But now the plastic model looks set to be gazumped by the new MacBook Air, due for release any day now.

The new MacBook Air, with 4GB RAM and a 128GB SSD, could potentially be sold at the same £867 price tag as the white MacBook. That would undoubtedly be more appealing to punters than the hefty old white model, which still use an ageing Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

All will be revealed soon, so stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for all the news as we get it.

Apple reports massive iPhone and iPad sales

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 11:26 PM PDT

Cupertino continues to make billions.

Apple has reported an astonishing set of quarterly results, with the Cupertino company revealing iPhone sales surged by a massive 142 per cent, while the iPad jumped by a frankly insane 183 per cent.

In total, 20.34 million iPhones were sold during the most recent quarter, with the iPad shifting 9.25 million. The latter figure is sure to strike fear into Android Honeycomb tablet manufacturers, who haven’t come close to matching the iPad’s rampant success.

Financially, Apple’s net profit for the quarter came in at $7.31 billion (£4.53 billion). That’s more than double the same quarter in 2010, which saw Apple make $3.25 billion (£2 billion).

It’s not all plain sailing though. While Mac sales hit 3.95 million, up by 14 per cent, the iPod continued its decline, selling just 7.54 million, a decline of 20 per cent. It’s believed Apple may kill off the iPod Classic during its annual music event in September.
