You can't really blame tech fans for not leaping out to buy the flagship Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola Xoom. The OS is brand new, there aren't many apps and it's more expensive than the Apple iPad. Well Moto seem to have recognised that and dropped the price of the 10-inch Wi-Fi only tab to $499, the same price as the iPad. Will see a price cut in the UK?

iPad app news: Bing adds Lasso copy and paste feature

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 01:57 PM PDT

New feature tops Apple's copy and paste method.

Microsoft has released an update for its excellent Bing search app, which provides an easy solution to the often-awkward copy and paste experience on touchscreen devices.

The new Lasso feature enables users to draw a freehand circle around the block of text which they'd like to search and the app will automatically copy the text.

Bing will then automatically start a new search based on the text you've copied.

The Lasso method used by the Bing app replaces Apple's own, somewhat clunky, method which involves holding down the touchscreen on a particular word, spreading the highlighted section and hitting the copy button.

Once that is done, you can paste that text into the search bar by pressing down on the empty area and adding your chosen text. The Bing solution is a lot more straightforward.

The new update is available to download now from the Apple App Store now.

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Some of today’s biggest news is the confirmation that Virgin Media has partnered with Spotify. This will bring a music streaming service to Virgin Media customers, providing them with an estimated 13 million streamable tracks.

Google plans to re-brand its Picasa and Blogger services, in a move designed to tie in with the public launch of Google+ some 4-6 weeks away. Since the end of their semi-partnership with Google a few days ago, sources close to Twitter’s financing claim that the social network is now with an estimated £4.4 billion. However, with social networks rapidly expanding and in the wake of the FOX News Twitter hack just days ago, Kaspersky Lab CEO Eugene Kaspersky has warned against the dangers of social networks, claiming that people 'trust too much' and that they 'publish too much personal information'.

Google’s Android OS has increased its market share in the US by 5 per cent between February and May this year, according to a survey carried out by ComScore. Subsequently, Nokia has slashed prices on its N8, E6 and C7 handsets, a move presumably intended to regain some of the Finns’ own market share as their Symbian handsets continue to struggle.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has announced that Nintendo’s Wii U will not be released until after April 1st 2012. Nintendo also fully expects the Wii to continue to sell alongside the Wii U after the launch of the latter. Meanwhile a poll over at playr2.com has voted FIFA as the ‘best video-game series of all time’. No doubt many of you will disagree, which is why we have given you the chance to register your opinions in our own poll.

Fox News Twitter hack: Social networking security exposed

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 08:43 AM PDT

Kaspersky Labs CEO Eugene Kaspersky has spoken out on the dangers of social networking following on from this week's hack on the Fox News Twitter feed

Social networking poses one of the greatest threats to user safety on the web, the head of internet security firm Kaspersky Lab has claimed.

In the wake of the recent hacks on the Fox News Twitter feed that saw attackers post tweets claiming US President Barack Obama had been assassinated in the early hours of Independence Day, security and data protection on social networking is under intense scrutiny.

“There are two issues with social networks,” announced Kaspersky Lab CEO and founder Eugene Kaspersky. “The first issue is that people trust too much, the second is that people publish too much personal information.”

Whilst sites such as Facebook have been repeatedly criticised and attacked over privacy concerns and a lack of user data protection Kaspersky believes much of the problem still resides with the sites’ users. “Most consumers still remember that it’s a bad idea to click on a linked file in an email, so they are aware of the danger from emails, they are aware of threats coming from the web, but when it comes to social networks, it’s gone.

“People are careless, they trust everyone, they think others are in the same community as they are, so they think that friends of friends are the people they say they are when sometimes they are not.”

On the actions needed to be taken to ensure the online safety of social networking users the internet security head said: “I think we need to educate everyone better. Remember, don’t trust everyone and know that if you have published any data, any information on a social network, it’s the same as if you published that in a global newspaper – so be careful and keep your brain switched on.”

Are you concerned for the safety of your personal information on social networking sites or are you ok with the world knowing your secrets? Share your thoughts on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 rumours: Slimmer, lighter form factor incoming

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 07:54 AM PDT

Apple is expected to launch its iPhone 5 handset in September with a new slimmer, lighter form factor

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 handset is to land sporting a slimmer and lighter form factor than its predecessor the iPhone 4, new reports have suggested.

Reputable news outlet the Wall Street Journal has claimed that the iPhone 5 will be “thinner and lighter” than previous models whilst sporting a widely expected 8-megapixel camera and September release date.

Quoting sources at component suppliers, WSJ suggest that in the midst of a legal battle with the Korean tech giant Apple’s next-generation smartphone will do away with the current breed of Samsung CPUs instead opting for a Qualcomm produced processor. Heading for a predicted September release, recent reports have suggested Apple has order 15 million iPhone 5 handsets for launch.

"Apple's sales estimates of the new iPhone is quite aggressive,” one supplier told the WSJ. “It told us to prepare to help the company meet its goal of 25 million units by the end of the year. The initial production volume will be a few million units... we were told to ship the components to assembler Hon Hai in August."

Apple iPad secrets: Man who leaked specs faces prison

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 06:59 AM PDT

A man who sold secret information about the Apple iPad prior to launch faces 30 years in prison

An American man is facing up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to leaking information on upcoming Apple products.

Walter Shimoon has revealed that he leaked confidential information on the original iPad tablet prior to the device’s official unveiling, selling the insider knowledge to industry figures with prosecutors claiming Shimoon also sold information of the iPhone 4 before its arrival including details on its dual-camera credentials.

Shimoon who worked at Flextronics International, a component manufacturer which supplies Apple and other leading tech players, made a reported $27,000 (£16,900) selling Apple’s secrets before being arrested in December of last year. He will be sentenced in July 2013.

Alleged with selling details on the iPad, codenamed the K48, Shimoon was caught on tape announcing in a phone conversation that Apple was so protective of the K48 project that you could be fired if "outside of a meeting that doesn't have K48 people in it.” He added: “That's how crazy they are about it".

Nokia N8, E6 and C7 prices slashed

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Drop could spark price war according to analysts.

Nokia has slashed the price of its N8, C7 and E6 Symbian smartphones by 15 per cent, in a move which is being seen as Espoo’s latest attempt to regain its popularity in the smartphone space.

“Two industry sources” told Reuters that the trio of top-end phones weren’t the only models to see price cuts. Other, unnamed phones are also being dropped in price, on a scale which, “…has not been seen for a very, very long time.”

Analysts warned that the cuts could lead to a price war, as rivals like Samsung look to drive home their advantage and ensure that Nokia doesn’t regain its position at the top of the smartphone charts.

Will you be seeking out a new Nokia phone now the prices are coming down? Or can’t you face the idea of using Symbian? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Twitter now worth £4.4 billion

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Still no plans to take social network public.

Twitter is worth around £4.4 billion. That’s the word from sources close to the social network’s latest round of financing, with the service looking to raise more private funds to continue its work towards ad-supported world domination.

What makes that eye-watering figure even more impressive is that a similar financing round just seven months ago valued Twitter at £2.3 billion. That suggests its value has soared by almost half since the start of 2011.

Twitter still doesn’t have plans to float on the stock market, unlike other big time players such as Zynga and Groupon.

Is Twitter really worth that much? Or are investors playing up the site’s importance to raise more funds? Tell us what you think of this story now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nintendo Wii U release date after 1 April 2012

Posted: 05 Jul 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Release details and more info on Wii U revealed in interview.

The Nintendo Wii U will not be released until after 1 April 2012. That’s the word directly from Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo America’s top exec, who was speaking in an interview with Forbes.

Answering a question about how the original Wii and Wii U would exist side-by-side, Fils Aime said, “[The Wii U] is a device that will launch in 2012, after April 1st, so we will deal with that situation at the appropriate time.”

Fils-Aime added that he was confident the current version of the Wii would still sell well, citing the longevity of the Gameboy Advance, which sat on shelves for two years after Nintendo launched its first DS handheld.

Plans to allow streaming content on the Wii U’s hulking controller were also hinted at, although specific details were not handed over. For more on this and the rest of the day’s gadget news and gossip, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.
