News@8pm: iPad 3 release as iPad HD and OS X Lion Posted: 08 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Your daily round-up of the day's top tech new from T3.com There is a lot more Apple news today as it appears OS X Lion will be available to Mac users within the next seven days. New reports also suggest that semi-upgraded iPad due for release in September could be the ‘iPad HD’ and would sport a new high-quality 2048 x 1536p resolution panel. The conclusion of all this week's iPhone rumour-mongering is that Apple will launch two new iPhone handset in September, with one being aimed directly at the mid-range market. Not everything Apple touches is coming up roses though, as one developer Gus Pinto found out when his charger cable caught fire whilst upgrading his iPhone 4 to iOS 5.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The release of two new patents seem to indicate that Apple is considering production of a stylus for its current generation devices, despite Steve Jobs’ dismissal of the stylus last year. Following its decision to cut prices on the Xoom tablet in the US yesterday, Motorola has come bearing gifts for its UK customers as well. Anyone who has bought a Xoom since July can send proof of purchase to Motorola, who will be happy to send out a free Xoom-specific keyboard and mouse.
Take Two has registered the domains rockstarfilms.com and rockstarfilms.net, sparking rumours that films based on games such as Grand Theft Auto and Read Dead: Redemption could be on the cards.
F1 racing driver Mark Webber has spoken to T3 about the boundaries between motorsport and day-to-day driving, claiming that F1 is restricted by its responsibility to pioneer road car technology. Finally, the new football season is fast approaching, and Sky has announced that its Sky Go service will be available for iPhone and iPad users before the season kicks off in August. Apple iPhone 4 bursts into flames after iOS 5 download Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:04 AM PDT
An Apple iPhone 4 charger cable has reportedly caught fire after the handset's owner downloaded iOS 5, Apple's new mobile operating system An app developer in the US has claimed his Apple iPhone 4 burst into flames whilst charging after he had upgraded the device to the upcoming iOS 5 mobile operating system.
Making the claims via Twitter, Gus Pinto, who describes himself as an iOS, Mac and Android developer, tweeted that the iPhone’s charging cable ignited whilst in use, following an update to the developer code version of the recently announced iPhone and iPad operating system.
A second tweet at 1:05pm revealed Pinto had longstanding concerns for his Apple handset following his adoption of the latest software update. He wrote: “scary stuff. I've been complaining my iPhone has been way too hot since I upgraded to iOS5...”
iOS 5 was officially unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in California last month with the new mobile operating system expected to land in September, alongside the mooted iPhone 5 with integrated Twitter accessibility.
T3 has contacted Gus for further comment. Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest updates. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

iPhone/iPad app news: Sky Go coming before football season Posted: 08 Jul 2011 07:18 AM PDT
It's like Sky Mobile TV, just with a little more Go. Sky has confirmed that the iPhone and iPads for its rebranded Sky Go service will arrive in time for the Premier League football season in August.
The service formerly known as Sky Player arrived in its new, somewhat similar guise, for Mac and PC this week, but the launch of the iOS apps will come slightly later. Until that time, existing Sky Mobile TV users will be able to continue using their iOS apps.
The new iPhone, iPad and iPod touch app, which is free to all current Sky TV subscribers, will allow users to watch all five Sky Sports channels (1, 2, 3, 4 and News), as well as ESPN and Sky News, on the go if you have the corresponding TV package.
The company says that it plans to add more channels and devices to the service over time and that the roll-out is supported by its recent acquisition of The Cloud, which offers free Wi-Fi in over 4,500 locations across the UK.
If you don't have a Sky home subscription, you'll be able to sign up for a Sky Go package costing between £15 and £40 a month from August.
We like this news, it makes us feel like the footy season is just around the corner.

Apple launch 2011: iPhone 5 release to see two handsets? Posted: 08 Jul 2011 07:12 AM PDT
Apple's iPhone 5 release date is set for September with a new form factor and a second budget iPhone Apple is set to launch two all new iPhone handsets in September with the eagerly awaited iPhone 5 to land boasting an all new form factor alongside a second, lower speced iPhone sibling, new reports have suggested.
The reports, which come courtesy of 9to5Mac and quote an “iPhone source that has been reliable in the past”, claim Apple is planning to launch two new iPhone handsets this autumn with the high-end iPhone 5 to be joined by an entry level device set to challenge the masses of the mid-range Android handsets currently available.
Whilst the current iPhone 4 retails for more than $600 in the US, £510 in the UK, new reports hint at the new low-end iPhone sporting a minimalist $229 (£144) price tag alongside a slower CPU and lower-res camera than the existing Apple handset.
Joining the reported two new iPhones at Apple’s September event will be a revamped iPod Touch which according to 9to5Mac’s source “will get updated in September as well.”
Previous rumours have suggested Apple will launch two new iPhone handsets in September as well as a potential, iPad 3 device that could be known as the iPad 2 Plus or iPad HD.
What gadgets would you like to see come out of Cupertino this September? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Formula 1 restricted by push for road car tech says Webber Posted: 08 Jul 2011 06:26 AM PDT
Formula 1 is being restricted by the need to further technologies for road cars says F1 racing driver Mark Webber
Formula 1 racing driver Mark Webber has told T3 he believes F1 is spending too much time developing technology for future road cars and not on racing.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s British Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Australian Red Bull Racing driver said whilst technologies that filter down to road faring vehicles are a by-product of Formula 1, the sport should not be based around enhancing these technologies.
With eco-friendly engines set to be introduced to F1 in the coming years, the pinnacle of motor racing is set to go green in order to set a good example and further the research into carbon-friendly vehicles.
“We have 20 events a year, there’s more fuel burnt by aeroplanes taxi-ing out to runways so it’s absolute peanuts what we do in the scheme of things, it’s more of a messaging thing obviously,” said Webber on the F1 green initiative.
“If you want to have that technology helping road cars, there’s no better place than F1 to put it."
Should Formula 1 be pushed into furthering the possibilities of road cars or should it concentrate solely on the racing experience and let technologies filter down naturally? Share your thoughts on the matter with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Apple iPad 3 or iPad HD pen to launch Posted: 08 Jul 2011 03:16 AM PDT
Apple has filed two new patents that suggest it's possibly working on a new electronic pen, which is rumoured to be launching in conjunction with the Apple iPad 3 or iPad HD in September
Apple CEO Steve Jobs famously dismissed tablets that don’t use solely touchscreen technology last year, saying: “If you see a stylus, they blew it”. But now it seems US-based Apple is coming around to the idea of bringing a dedicated pen to its iPhone and iPad devices, with the release of two new patents.
The first shows a heated electronic pen or 'stylus' - which could give better precision when used with iOS devices - that all pack capacitive touchscreens. Word is the heat will stop the end of the pen from wearing out, while the pen itself could possibly be docked in the iPhone or iPad to charge.
More interestingly, the second stylus wouldn’t work as a traditional virtual pen. Instead it will wirelessly communicate with the iPad or iPhone, allowing users to write information onto another source and have it instantly appear on their iOS device. The patents were filed back in January, prompting rumours it could be launched in conjunction with the Apple iPad 3 or iPad HD in September.
Will Apple really release a stylus? Or will Steve Jobs stick to his guns and claim that users are happy simply prodding screens with their fingers? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days
RoboCup: Football playing robots Steely hinged footballers are descending on Istanbul to take part in the RoboCup 2011, the robot equivalent of sport’s biggest tournament. Intended as a project to help develop artificial intelligence, GB’s entrant into the RoboCup is the team from the University of Edinburgh’s Subramanian Ramamoorthy, sadly as the robots were trained in Scotland football is not their strongpoint.
3D printers are the future. Chocolate 3D printers are the future of tasty treats. Marked as the world’s first ‘food-printer’ the University of Exeter has developed a 3D printer that forgoes the usual ink innards for a tasty chocolate offering that adds layer upon layer of the food stuff to physical 3D products.
The world’s smallest Space Invaders arcade machine has been unveiled with the tiny gaming classic measuring in at just 7 x 3.5 x 4.5 inches in size whilst sporting all the same buttons and arcade stick found on the full size original just on a smaller scale.
The excitement of buying a new console game to get it home, tear open the plastic wrap and get it in the console is one of life’s great joys. A man in the US, however, has collected every PS2 game ever made and kept them in their pristine conditions still in their wrappers and untouched. He really should have bought the console first so he could have given them a play.
Call of Duty 4: Galactic Warfare Activision’s hugely popular Call of Duty franchise has seen a new mod released that has transformed the classic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare release into a Star Wars spoof with Storm Trooper clad soldiers seen scattering through inter-galactic lands. OS X Lion: new software out next week Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT
Lion set to be sitting pretty on new Macs in a matter of days. Apple’s much-anticipated release of OS X Lion is set to happen next week. That’s according to Apple Insider, which says retail staff have been told to make imperative RAM updates to in-store Macs no latter than Sunday 10 July.
The news comes from insiders with access to Apple’s retail news service. Word is that overnight training shifts will take place next week in order to get staff fully up to speed with the iOS-influenced software.
It all means Mac fanatics will be able to grab OS X Lion from the Mac App Store in the next seven days. The same report claims that customers could even attend an Apple store to download the update and get training to get to grips with its new features.
The release also points to the imminent release of updated MacBooks and MacBook Airs. Both machines have been the subject of intense rumour, with Apple holding them back to ensure they had Lion on board from the get go. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
GTA and Red Dead Redemption movies incoming? Posted: 08 Jul 2011 01:01 AM PDT
Internet rife with gossip about plans for GTA and Red Dead flicks. Take Two, the company behind the GTA franchise, has registered two new websites which suggest films based on the best-selling games franchise could soon be on the way.
Rockstarfilms.com and Rockstarfilms.net have both been picked up by the gaming giant, as well as a trademark for Rockstar Films. The latter covers, “Animated motion picture films featuring entertainment, namely, action, adventure, dramatic, comedic, children's and documentary themes.”
A GTA film has been mooted for years, but Rockstar and Take Two have previously said they weren’t keen on taking the title to the big screen. Talk of a Red Dead Redemption movie has also been swirling.
Is turning the GTA franchise into a film a smart idea? Or should Rockstar and Take Two stay focused on gaming? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Motorola offering free keyboard and mouse to UK Xoom owners Posted: 07 Jul 2011 11:32 PM PDT
Motorola is offering new UK Xoom owners a free keyboard and mouse with their purchase, after the device failed to make an impact in the highly competitive tablet market
Just a day after Motorola slashed the price of its Xoom tablet in the US, the mobile maker has just announced it will be giving away a free keyboard and mouse to new UK owners, as well as to those who purchased their tablet in July.
The so-called promotion covers all Xooms that have been bought in Britain since the start of July. To get hold of one, users need to send their receipt into Motorola, who will then send out the Xoom-specific accessories. The consumer electronics firm says the deal will continue “while stocks last”.
The company has struggled to sell large volumes of its tablet in light of the release of the Apple iPad 2, and a string of other models which use Google’s Android Honeycomb. After launching at the end of Feburary 2011, the Motorola Xoom recorded paltry sales of 100,000 units in April, forcing Moto bosses to slash the price of the tablet in the US. And as mentioned in T3's Motorola Xoom review, the tablet was far too overpriced and the media performance failed to reach our expectations.
We think it's time they changed their infamous logo to: 'Goodbye Moto!'
Has this convinced you to buy a Motorola Xoom? Or is Moto simply trying to clear stock ahead of a planned sequel? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple iPad 3 to launch as iPad HD? Posted: 07 Jul 2011 11:22 PM PDT
Sources have revealed Apple is working on a predecessor to the iPad 2, the Apple iPad HD, which will sport a high definition 2048x1536 resolution panel
Earlier this week, T3 reported on the prospect of Apple launching a third-generation iPad, the iPad 2 Plus, in September. Now sources claim that Apple is indeed plotting a slightly improved slate for later this year, although it will be called the iPad HD, not the iPad 2 Plus, as previously reported.
The slate itself will only be a minor tweak on the current best-selling classic, with a 2048x1536 resolution panel, hence the HD moniker. The report suggests it will be marketed as a ‘pro’ model, with versions of top-end software such as Final Cut available for the tablet.
If the iPad HD does come to pass, it will give Apple a sleek new model to sell in the run up to Christmas, as well as offering it the chance to diversify the iPad range, much as it did with the iPod and iPod Mini in the early noughties.
It has been a rocky week for Apple. Yesterday, Apple's App Store recorded its 15 billionth app download but earlier, had lost its high profile App Store trademark lawsuit against Amazon.
The sources are also saying that Apple is not viewing this as the iPad 3, rather an iterative update ahead of the major sequel which will come next year. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more on the iPad HD as we get it.
