iPhone app news: Dragon Go! Voice control app launched

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 10:45 AM PDT

Voice search arrives on the iPhone

Nuance, the company behind the brilliant Dragon Dictation voice recognition tool, has launched the Dragon Go! app for iPhone to allow easy voice search on the device.

The free app will launch applications and search the internet based on what you ask for, for example if you ask for "movie showtimes for Transformers" the Fandango app will open to present movies, showtimes and ticket purchasing options.

You can also view information on Wikipedia or Google Search, view news on CNN, trailers on YouTube and check out what people are saying about the movie on Facebook and Twitter using the apps centre carousel.

You can also speak specific search terms into the app, such as "smartphone reviews on T3" and you'll get a Google Search results page.

It also boasts links to navigation services, weather and local amenities, and if you're in a place where its not convenient to speak into your phone, you can still type in your request the old-fashioned way. This worked well for us, as the American-flavoured app seemed unfamiliar with the Queen's English.

Dragon Go is a nice alternative to Google Voice Search for iPhone users. There's no iPad version as of yet, but there's always the option of upscaling the resolution if you're desperate to give this app a try.

30K Lady Blanche Apple iPhone 4 unveiled

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 09:17 AM PDT

Gresso White iPhone 4 Lady Blanche unveiled with $30,000 diamond makeover

With the iPhone 5 release date expected to be just a few short weeks away Gresso has announced a limited edition diamond encrusted white iPhone worth $30,000.

Famed for its over-the-top mobile handsets the Swiss company has unveiled its latest creation the iPhone 4 Lady Blanche, a white Apple handset that according to reports boasts three independent Swiss timepieces on the back crafted from pearl alongside a host of individual cut diamonds and encased within diamond-coated mineral glass.

Whilst a release date is currently vague with the device stated as ‘coming out this year’, the iPhone 4 Lady Blanche is hand made using a floating diamonds technique that is claimed to offer a ‘unique dazzling’.

If the $30,000 (£18,607) iPhone 4 Lady Blanche is a little out of your league a lower end handset is available for just $7,000 (£4,342) with Swarovski crystals replacing the pricey diamonds. Alternatively you could wait for the iPhone 5 which according to a report earlier today will be released on August 16th.

What handset or gadget would you like to see get the pimped-out diamond makeover treatment? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PES 2012 trailer reveals a host of new gameplay features

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 08:53 AM PDT

Pro Evolution Soccer targets FIFA as Konami releases the first PES 2012 gameplay trailer

Pro Evolution Soccer developer Konami has released the first official PES 2012 gameplay trailers with the six videos detailing a number of new features from the upcoming football sim.

Totalling more than seven minutes of content the six videos offer a first look at a number of the game’s new features including off the ball controls, zonal marking, dummy runs and overlap play.

Whilst the videos lack the fast paced, exciting and teasing nature of the recent FIFA 12 trailer, the new gameplay footage clearly outlines how PES 2012 will in the words of Konami focus on “the instinctive way the game can be played and on teamwork in particular.”

Despite celebrating a number of years as the best football game on the market, PES has fallen into the shadow of EA’s FIFA franchise in recent years with FIFA 12, due out on September 30th, once again expected to outshine the Pro Evolution offering that is to hit stores on a yet undisclosed date.

Whilst of the big two football titles takes your fancy and cash on an annual basis, PES or FIFA? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 features: panoramic camera mode detailed

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 07:57 AM PDT

iOS 5 features have revealed the iPhone 5 will support panoramic photo capture capabilities

Following reports that the iPhone 5 is to sport an 8-megapixel camera with panoramic shooting modes, updates to the latest iOS 5 beta code have revealed new aspects of Apple’s planned snapshot features.

Officially unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference last month iOS 5 is expected to later this year alongside the eagerly awaited iPhone 5 handset with a section of code discovered shortly after the beta OS was made available to developers suggesting panoramic photo modes are to be one of the key new additions.

Whilst last month's code revealed users will be able to take, save and cancel panoramic shots, the section of code responsible for this photo-enhancing feature has since been extended with new sections revealing that users will need to pan their device from left to right, “tap the Camera button to begin” and “keep the arrow on the center line” to make use of the update.

Despite repeated rumour and comment claiming that Apple will launch the next-generation iPhone  in September a new report released earlier today has suggested that the iPhone 5 release date will actually be on August 16th.

When do you think Apple will finally launch the iPhone 5 and will its panoramic photo capture modes enhance the user experience? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony Reader refresh coming August to challenge Kindle

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 07:16 AM PDT

New Sony eReader to challenge Amazon Kindle and tablet market

Sony is to launch a new range of eReaders in the coming weeks as it looks to challenge Amazon’s market leading Kindle device in the run up to the Christmas shopping period.

Speaking with the Bloomberg news agency Sony’s vice president of digital reading, Phil Lubell revealed that the Japanese tech giant is to complement its upcoming S1 and S2 Android tablets with a new eReader that will feature “hardware and software improvements.”

Reportedly heading for an August release the new Sony device is likely to land prior to the official arrival of Amazon’s next Kindle reader, a device that is expected to tout a new touchscreen interface and touchdown alongside the online retailer’s first foray into the Android tablet market.

Whilst the leading tablet devices now all feature dedicated electronic reader applications Sony is adamant that this will not spell the death of the dedicated eReader that it helped pioneer.

“We think there will still be a market for dedicated readers as long as tablets remain in the $500 price range,” Lubell announced.

Can Sony’s new mystery eReader compete with the existing or even upcoming Kindle or has Amazon cornered the market? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple's UK App Store sees 17 per cent price rise - but Aussies get price cut

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 07:00 AM PDT

The great price hike: Apple increases the minimum price of its apps by almost 20 per cent, while App Store users in Australia, Switzerland and Japan enjoy a price slash...

After learning that Apple has today increased the minimum price of its apps in its UK App Store, it has now emerged that the consumer electronics giant has slashed prices in Japan, Switzerland and Australia, bringing the latter it in line with US prices. However, UK App Store customers will still be paying more than their US counterparts.

Customers in Australia, which has seen a sudden surge in its dollar currency, were until today paying more for their apps than US customers. Earlier today, T3 reported that Apple introduced the new minimum charge, which will see British customers pay £0.69p per app.

A spokesperson for Apple said the price hike was due to a shift in foreign exchange rates and local tax laws. However, it seems odd that Britain should see a price hike when the US dollar recently fell against the sterling.

The success of Apple’s App Store has largely been because of a huge amount of free and cheap software. Developers and users alike have largely jumped on board with the UK minimum price of £0.59p, which is why it seems a bit fishy that Apple has now decided to increase its original minimum price.

As of this very minute, the minimum price of apps on the app store has risen to 69p in the UK – a difference of 10p. There are still tens of thousands of free apps available to download, but it’s this minimum price point that could possibly spark an app riot.

Frustratingly, this price point works out at around $1.11, meaning that users in the UK are now paying more for apps than the $0.99 minimum enjoyed by customers in the US and other countries across the globe.

There’s been no word from Apple as to why this is although the company hasn't changed its 30 per cent share policy in app revenue from developers.

This may work out as good news for developers, assuming users get on board with the new price point.

Were you happy with 59p apps? Are Apple trying to rip us off? Do you only download free apps? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Apple App Store to introduce Volume Purchasing Program

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:47 AM PDT

Apple iTunes App Store to add Volume Purchasing Program for business customers

Apple has announced it is to introduce bulk application purchases in the near future with businesses able to easily buy multiple copies of business-centric applications to equip their staff’s iOS and Mac devices.

Pegged as ‘coming soon’ and scheduled to roll out initially exclusive to the US market, Apple’s App Store Volume Purchasing Program for Businesses will offer a simple way for business to equip multiple devices with the same application-based software.

Set to offer a time saving, streamlined purchasing process for corporations, the upcoming Apple service will see businesses select the number of copies of an app they want to purchase with a unique redeem code that can then be distributed to the desired Apple hardware touting staff supplied for each copy.

“Whether you’re providing apps to two employees or ten thousand, the Volume Purchase Program makes it simple to find, buy, and distribute the apps your business needs,” the Apple announcement declared.

News of the App Store Volume Purchasing Program comes just hours after Apple raised the minimum price of applications in the UK to fall in line with US pricing. Formerly available at 59 pence apiece thousands of iPhone, iPad and Mac applications have now been re-priced at 69 pence each seemingly without prior notice being give to app developers.

Are you a business owner, would the new Volume Purchasing Program benefit your needs? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nokia Windows Phone: £80m campaign planned

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Will Nokia really be able to succeed with its all-new, Microsoft-backed blowers?

Nokia is set to spend a colossal £80 million on ad campaigns and branding for its new Windows Phones. Word is that Espoo will start splashing the ads from October, when the devices are set to hit shelves.

The campaign is set to run for six months and once again shows how much the Finns are hoping that Windows Phone is their saviour. The company has been in freefall over the past few years, as Google and Apple dominate the smartphone space.

Nokia will also be hoping that they can help Microsoft improve on their minimal smartphone share, which Steve Ballmer said earlier this week was “very small”. It’s believed to be no more than 4 per cent globally.

Are you holding out for a Nokia Windows Phone? If so, tell us why on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer testing ramps up

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has brought in external testers for Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer modes

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 developer Infinity Ward has hired a team of intense testers to weed out any and all glitches and bugs in the upcoming game’s multiplayer content, new reports suggest.

Joining Infinity Ward’s already extensive offering of in-house testers the developer has reportedly hired the services of the mapMonkeys, a team of gamers with a reputation of being the pinnacle pre-release testing priding themselves on outing glitches and sections of broken code that could give gamers an unfair advantage in multiplayer modes.

“They’re a great addition to an already rigorous QA process that the internal team here at Infinity Ward / Sledgehammer and additionally at Activision have been doing since development began,” Robert Bowling a creative strategist at Infinity Ward said.

“While we’ve been hammering away testing on it since it’s been up and running, these guys focus specifically on exploits that can potentially be used to an unfair advantage, such as getting outside a map’s playable area, inside geo, or find weapon / equipment exploits that were not intended by the designer so that we can catch and address these before it gets out to the public.”

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release date has been set for November 8th with the world’s gaming fans likely to top the record set during last year’s Black Ops release which saw more than 1 million gamers playing online multiplayer modes on the night of launch.

What new multiplayer features would you like to see Infinity Ward and Activision make available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

RIM to launch 7 new BlackBerry handsets this year

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 02:22 AM PDT

BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 to be the first of a series of new handsets by Research In Motion (RIM) and they'll all be sporting the new BlackBerry 7 OS mobile operating system

BlackBerry’s parent company Research in Motion is to launch seven new BlackBerry handsets this year, one of the company’s chief executives has announced.

Speaking to shareholders at the company’s annual meeting earlier this week, RIM’s co-chief executive Jim Balsillie revealed that despite delays in the release of the company’s next-generation mobile operating system the Blackberry 7 OS, seven new handsets will be released in 2011, with the first being the Blackberry Bold Touch 9900.

With RIM share prices being halved to $13.6 billion (£8.5b billion) in the past year - the company was valued at $75.2 billion (£46.6 billion) in August 2008 - could it be a sign of the times that Blackberry is struggling to match up to Apple's globally successful iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 handsets?

The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900, the latest handset to be unveiled by RIM, is set to launch in the UK on September 15th with the full QWERTY keyboard touting handset to sport a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, a 5-megapixel rear mounted camera and inbuilt Near Field Communication technologies. Yesterday it was revealed that BlackBerry App World has recorded its 1 billionth BlackBerry App download. So it's not all bad news for Blackberry, we suppose...

What features would you like to see land in the new BlackBerry handsets and operating system? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon Android tablet primed for October

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 02:05 AM PDT

Much-rumoured tablet looks like it's almost good-to-go.

Amazon’s much vaunted Android tablet is set to be unleashed in October. That’s according to “people familiar with the matter,” who have spoken with the Wall Street Journal about the online retail giant’s plans.

As per previous rumours, these insiders say the Amazon slate will tout a 9-inch screen and pack in Android Honeycomb, but won’t have a camera. Amazon is said to be working out how to sell it successfully alongside the Kindle, itself set for a refresh later this year.

Interestingly, these sources also say that while an Asian gadget maker has designed and built the Amazon tablet for Jeff Bezos’ company, 2012 will see a new version created by Amazon itself.

Analysts reckon Amazon will try and sell its tab at a lower price than the iPad, even if that means making a loss to start with. It’ll need to sell millions in its first few months in order to stand any chance of catching Apple’s all conquering tablet.

iPhone 5 release date now 16 August?

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 11:29 PM PDT

Apple seeking 'full-time iPhone staff' from 16 August. Will it really launch new iPhone then?

Could the iPhone 5 be launching on 16 August? That’s the rumour sweeping the web this morning, after CNET got its hands on an Apple job listing looking for, “…full-time iPhone Sales Staff,” from that date until 29 October.

The listing, posted by UK recruitment agency Reed, covers a slew of areas across the UK and seems to specifically be targeting workers to look after iPhone concessions in larger department stores.

The date has led to speculation that Apple is looking to launch the iPhone 5 on or around that date, falling weeks earlier than its much-mooted September release date. It had been assumed that Steve Jobs would use his annual iPod keynote to tout the next-gen blower.

For now, we’re taking this one with a huge pinch of salt. But Apple’s notorious when it comes to pulling surprises. Will the iPhone 5 be outed on 16 August? Let us know what you think now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Spotify US launch today

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 11:16 PM PDT

Free, Unlimited and Premium packages all up for grabs.

Having announced plans just last week for a US launch, Spotify has at last confirmed that the service will go live across the pond today, 14 July. It’s a huge day for the Swedish streaming service, which has been hoping to open a Stateside version for over two years.

Spotify has confirmed the US offering will include the same packages available here in the UK and across the rest of Europe. There’ll be ad-supported free access, as well as unlimited access for $4.99 a month and premium access for $9.99. The latter will include offline storage on iPhone and Android devices.

How Spotify will go down in the States remains to be seen, especially as other streaming services are already dominant. But with prices for the ad-free packages so low, it’s likely plenty of punters will be keen to sign up.

Tell us what you think of Spotify’s expansion now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
