News@8pm: T3 Gadget Awards finalists revealed Posted: 22 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com Leaked pictures of a HTC handset are reportedly of the upcoming HTC Ruby, which the company plans to add to its already impressive smartphone lineup. HTC has been playing a key role in the growth of the smartphone; analysts at Juniper Research stated that smartphone shipments could total 1 billion by 2016.
iPhone 4 stocks are dwindling without replenishment, according to new reports, as Apple prepares to launch the much-mooted iPhone 5. Demand for the new handset will undoubtedly be high, but just make sure you don't buy from one of the fake Apple stores that have been spotted springing up all over China.
Star Wars fans will be able to get their sweaty hands on a new special edition Xbox 360, Microsoft revealed today, that it has been designed to match the aesthetics of R2-D2 and C-3PO. Meanwhile, other gaming fans will be pleased to see Activision have released more Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 screenshots, offering further insight into the first-person shooter.
Virgin Media is now providing fibre-optic 100Mbps broadband to nearly 6.5 million Brits, the company has announced. The increasingly high-speed internet available in Britain is helping the country climb the international rankings. High speed broadband will also have played a part in helping Apple over the last 24 hours, as it recorded over 1 million downloads of its new Mac OS X Lion in its first day since release. Finally, today saw the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 finalists revealed. Head on over to the T3 Gadget Awards to vote for your top tech of the past 12 months now. BlackBerry apps: Android player for PlayBook leaks Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:16 AM PDT
RIM finally set to deliver long-awaited Android app saviour for PlayBook? The long-promised, yet to be delivered Android App Player for the BlackBerry Playbook arrived in Beta form before it was quickly pulled by RIM.
The software update which will allow certain compatible apps from the Android Market to be ported over to the BlackBerry PlayBook was announced when RIM revealed plans for the PlayBook many moons ago.
p>A select number of PlayBook owners were able to obtain the file before it was removed from the BlackBerry.com website, and early reports suggest that it's slow-running and lacks many of the features RIM had promised.
The suggestion is that this version of the Android App Player was an old build and won't be the final version that is offered to PlayBook users. However, its very appearance means that an overdue release is surely imminent.
Probably the biggest hurdle preventing the PlayBook from taking off (aside from the fact that it's not the iPad 2) is a barren wasteland of an App Marketplace. Very few developers have become engaged with RIM's new format, so the presence of Android apps is bound to be a bonus.

Battlefield 3 pre-orders match Call of Duty: Black Ops sales Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:14 AM PDT
EA's Battlefield 3 is matching Call of Duty: Black Ops' pre-order records but trailing the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Battlefield 3 pre-orders are comparable to those of the record breaking Call of Duty: Black Ops release, figures from an industry analyst have revealed.
Ahead of the Battlefield 3 October release date industry analyst firm Cowen & Company has claimed that EA’s first person shooter game is on track to sell 11 million copies by the year’s end matching the pre-order sales of last year’s Call of Duty title.
Doug Creutz, an analyst with Cowen & Company announced that channel checks "indicate that pre-orders are roughly comparable to those of Call of Duty: Black Ops last year, which has gone on to sell over 20 million units."
Despite strong Battlefield 3 pre-orders recent reports have revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders are outstripping those of its predecessor putting the Activision title in-line to become the highest selling gaming release of all time.
Which of the two eagerly awaited first person shooters are you most looking forward to playing? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPod Touch 5th generation leaks online as white components are snapped Apple’s fifth-generation iPod Touch is to follow the likes of the iPhone and iPad and be made available in both black and white colour forms, leaked images of a new white façade have revealed.
The fifth-generation iPod Touch device is expected to follow tradition and make its first official appearance during Apple’s September event ahead of a pre-Christmas release.
The leaks parts, which suggest the upcoming refresh of the iPod Touch range will boast the same form factor as last year’s model, offer the first insight into Apple’s September event that it is expected will see the iPhone 5 release date revealed.
Recent reports have suggested that like the iPad 2 the iPod Touch 5 will land sporting a 1GHz dual-core A5 processor as well as improved cameras whilst consumer demand would see the iPod Touch up its storage capabilities.

HTC Ruby leaks as dozens of spy shots hit Flickr Posted: 22 Jul 2011 07:07 AM PDT
HTC Ruby leaks as possible addition to the HTC Android smartphone family A new HTC handset has leaked online with a number of classically blurry spy shots of the mooted HTC Ruby handset landing on Flickr.
Whilst little information can be garnered from the shots which appear to have been snapped within a HTC manufacturing plant in the reflection of a HTC Flyer tablet device, data connected to the images suggest the photographs were taken with one of the upcoming handsets dubbed the HTC Ruby.
HTC’s current flagship handset the HTC Sensation was today unveiled as the only wildcard entry to make the finals of the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 with the dual-core smartphone going up against the Apple iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S II for the title of Phone of the Year.

iPhone 4 stocks drop hinting at an imminent iPhone 5 release date The iPhone 5 release date is edging nearer as after months of endless rumours and speculation new reports have suggested stocks of the iPhone 4 have dropped ahead of the new handset’s arrival.
Following Apple’s second quarter products call which saw the Cupertino firm hint at a September arrival for the eagerly awaited iPhone 5, new reports have claimed US network provider Verizon Wireless has begun clearing its stocks of the existing Apple handset.
Latest rumours have suggested that the Apple iPhone 5 will launch this September boasting the same 1GHz dual-core A5 processor found in the iPad 2 alongside an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities and a thinner form factor despite leaked pictures of a claimed iPhone 5 prototype revealing an iPhone 4-esque design earlier this week.

Apple iPad tablet market share drops as Android soars Posted: 22 Jul 2011 03:29 AM PDT
Apple vs. Android moves in to the tablet market Apple’s iPad has remained the world’s most popular tablet device as tablets running Google’s Android OS encroach on Apple’s market share, new figures from quarter two have revealed.
Having boasted a 94.3 per cent share of the tablet market at the close of the first quarter of 2011, Apple has since seen fierce rival Google make waves in the tablet market reducing the Cupertino firms share drop to 61.3 per cent, figures from Strategy Analytics have claimed.
Whilst Apple is expected to follow tradition and unveil its third-generation iPad in April or May next year Google’s tablet offering looks set to be boosted in October with the expected arrival of the mooted Android powered Amazon tablet as the retailer looks to build on the success of the Kindle.
"If Amazon decides to enter the Android tablet category later this year, that will bring fresh excitement and buzz to the Android community, but Amazon will need to deliver a truly standout offering if it really wants to make headway against the popular iPad," Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics said.
Other surprises in the tablet quarterly market share figures revealed tablets running Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS are more popular than the QNX running BlackBerry PlayBook.
What is the best tablet on the market right now? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and make your opinion matter by voting for the Tablet of the Year in the T3 Gadget Awards 2011.

Apple Mac OS X Lion gets 1m downloads Posted: 22 Jul 2011 01:30 AM PDT
Apple enjoys huge success with its Mac OS X Lion desktop operating system, recording over 1m downloads on the day of its release
Having recently enjoyed a successful MacBook Air launch this week, Apple has something new to be smug about after recording over 1m downloads of its new desktop operating system, the Mac OS X Lion, a day after it was made available to download.
At £20.99 the update to Mac OS X was made available to download via the Mac App Store by Apple in an effort to make it easier for users to get the latest upgrade.
With around 250 new features, Mac OS X Lion is a definitive step in the direction of merging Mac OS with iOS, the company's mobile operating system. As mentioned in T3's Mac OS X Lion preview, features such as Launchpad and programs such as Apple's Mail App have all been given the iOS treatment in an effort to simplify things ever further.
With the Flash version of Mac OS X Lion on the way shortly, and the Mac App Store available in 123 countries, it'll be interesting to see what these figures will be like in a week, no doubt surging even higher.
But as one giant rises through the ranks, another falls. Yesterday, T3 reported that Nokia, once the biggest phone company in the world, had recorded a humiliating loss of £323m, despite receiving over £400m from Apple following a legal dispute. Should Apple enjoy their success while they can?

Google virus affects 1 million users Posted: 22 Jul 2011 01:00 AM PDT
Google was today hit by a search-hijacking virus that directed 1 million of its users to third-party sites Google has been hit by a ‘search-hijacking’ virus, installed by hackers, that is believed to have affected more than 1m of its users. Until earlier today, when the problem was rectified by Google engineers, the malicious software directed users to third-party sites that paid the hackers to divert traffic to their web pages.
Luckily engineers noticed the virus when performing routine maintenance and have been able to address the issue by alerting those affected. It's believed the virus was downloaded through fake web-security software known as 'scareware' which then infected the Windows computers and begun redirecting searches.
Google has made sure that all those affected will be made aware through a yellow warning bar at the top of the screen when users search through their website. They will then be given the correct advice on how to remove the 'scareware' which is causing the disturbances to their website.
Have you been affected by this virus, or had a yellow warning bar appear when using Google? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Virgin 100Mbps broadband now in 6.5m homes Posted: 22 Jul 2011 12:30 AM PDT
With the UK slowly climbing the tables in internet speeds the public is finally seeing the results Virgin has announced that it's fibre-optic 100Mbps broadband could now be accessed by nearly 6.5 million people in Britain, offering a drastically increased speed to that of just a year ago.
Aimed at being the equivalent of BT's own fibre-optic to the home service, the 100Mbps option is now available to more than a quarter of British homes meaning more of us will be able to stream films, download games and use the internet faster than before.
This is just the start for Virgin who are apparently already running 200Mbps trials across the country and are in fact testing 1.5Gbps in East London. While there is no info on when we might be seeing these speeds, it's reassuring to know that the company is at least looking forward.
Aimed at customers who are willing to pay a premium, the 100Mbps service offers HD streaming, smooth gaming and excellent upload speeds, and with Virgin aiming to hit 13 million homes before the middle of next year, it's also growing fast.
