Private profiles not allowed on Google+

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 06:36 AM PDT

Profiles on Google+ have to be public, and only by individuals.

The new social network, Google+, has given users time till the end of July, to make their profiles public, or they will be deleted.

According to the Google+ FAQs, "nearly all Google Profiles are public", and the aim of these profiles is to manage a public identity.

It says: "Private profiles don't allow this, so we have decided to require all profiles to be public." It adds that full name and gender are the only two items that have to be visible on the public profile, while other items can be hidden from public view if needed.

"If you currently have a private profile but you do not wish to make your profile public, you can delete your profile. Or, you can simply do nothing. All private profiles will be deleted after July 31, 2011," according to the website.

In addition, it has been reported that profiles created by and for businesses are being removed from the networking site, as Google is aiming Google+ solely at individuals.

Google+ is now open to anyone with a Google account, and at a recent press conference, Eric Schmidt, executive chairman, Google, said he would "love to have deeper integration with Twitter and Facebook." Techies will recall that Google real time search no longer includes tweets as the deal fell through.

Will it, or won't it?

It's possible we may see the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 earlier than we expect.

The official date for the release of the new BlackBerry is September 15, 2011, but an online retailer is showing a date in August for its release.

Play.com has posted a SIM-free handset on its website, showing a release date of August 12, 2011 as opposed to the earlier announced date.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes in black and white, with the black one officially launching in September by 3 UK, and the white one a month later. O2 and Vodafone plan to stock the phone as well.

The device runs on the new BlackBerry 7 OS, has 768MB of RAM, 8GB storage, a 5mp camera with LED flash and 720p video recording, as well as NFC tech.

It also has its physical QWERTY keyboard along with a touch-screen one.

Broadband map of UK released by Ofcom

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 02:10 AM PDT

What's your broadband speed like? Find out.

An interactive and zoomable map has been launched by Ofcom, which shows details of broadband services across the UK.

The map is created through overlays over Google Maps, using data from ISPs, and is said to be updated every year.

"We are now developing a clear picture of the UK's fixed broadband infrastructure and how it delivers for consumers," said Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive.

"We hope that this information will stimulate further rollout of broadband infrastructure and better performance for households and businesses," he added.

Users can click on a specific area of the map to show detailed statistics of the area. The scale is from 1-5, with colours marking each range, with green showing the fastest and red the slowest.

The map shows that 68% of homes in the UK have a fixed broadband connection, with an average speed of 7.5Mbps. Brighton and Hove show the highest takeup of broadband at 80%, with Edinburgh showing the fastest average speed of 10.1Mbps.

You can view the map here.
