Posted: 04 Jan 2011 01:16 PM PST

Can the Galaxy 50 conquer the Apple PMP great?

The Apple iPod Touch has today inherited a new rival to its MP3 player crown as Samsung's Galaxy Player 50 media player goes on sale in the UK.

News@8pm: Microsoft enter TV wars and HTC tablet named

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Microsoft will be pitching into the set-top box wars after reports have revealed it’s close to unveiling its own model. There’s no name yet, but a pared down Media Centre UI to make it user friendly has been mooted. More details will be released at Steve Ballmer’s keynote tomorrow evening. It’s expected to go toe-to-toe with Google TV and Apple TV. Talking of Cupertino’s finest, Apple hasn’t wasted any time nudging their products northwards with the UK’s VAT increase to 20 per cent. The rises aren't too eyewatering, but a £1,999 MacBook Pro will now come in at £2,041.

CES is likely to be going tablet-crazy over the next few days, so getting in one of the first shots is HTC which is expected to unveil its own Scribe tablet, which is expected to run Google’s upcoming Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS. Another Far-Eastern giant looking for a slice of tablet pie is Toshiba. Fresh on from their undwhelming Folio, they have demoed an as-yet unnamed 10in Android 3.0 Honeycomb device. Far more familiar territory for Toshiba is laptops and they are threatening to unveil the Holy Grail of 3D; yep, glasses-free viewing on their new Qosmio laptop.

Following hot on the heels of the Big M’s Kinect is Asus’ very own motion sensing effort, the WAVI Xtion. Expected after Easter, the console will allow users to enjoy and share PC content on TV with gestures. Hoping to add to the commercially successful Kinect is a new service called Avatar Kinect. Not many details are available, but expect gamers’ avatars to hook up via Xbox Live and shoot the breeze virtually. Talking of gaming, Call of Duty, is expected to add paid-for online content to its armoury. Analysts expect a ‘first quarter’ launch for a subcriptions based ‘second tier’ on board COD.

Sony’s nifty little video recorder, the Bloggie is set to receive 3D shooting credentials. Alongside a wealth of new product launches, the pocket friendly shooter will reportedly offer full HD 3D video capture for homemade 3D playback via a 3DTV enabled set. Also fighting to get its share of airtime at CES will be Kodak who will push out a series of eye-catching launches. The Easyshare Touch video camera looks the best bet, packing a 3-inch capacitive touchpanel, 14-megapixel sensor and HDMI for quick transfer to HD TV.

Angry Birds to land on PS3 and PSP consoles this week

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:12 AM PST

PSN first Angry Birds console target

App sensation Angry Birds is set to land on the PlayStation Network within the coming week as developer Rovio continues its multi-platform attack of the bird-flinging game.

To be made available as a downloadable PlayStation mini release for PS3 and PSP gamers, the Sony-bound rendition of the mobile application success will feature 63 levels of pig-attacking fun, far fewer levels than seen on the iOS and Android-based mobile editions.

As if we weren’t all completely aware of the premise of Angry Birds, Sony’s latest PSN press release read: "Angry Birds features hours of gameplay, challenging physics-based castle demolition, and lots of replay value." It went on to add: "Dish out revenge on the green pigs who stole the Birds’ eggs. Use the unique destructive powers of the Angry Birds to lay waste to the pigs’ fortified castles.”

Having dominated the mobile market in 2010, Rovio recently announced its intentions to roll out the Angry Birds game across the three major consoles in 2011, with the PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii to be joined by Windows and Mac computers, the Nintendo DS and Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Has Angry Birds had its day or is it still as perilously addictive as ever? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Cheap iPad sales sluggish say insiders

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:38 AM PST

Report claims cheap iPads have failed to take off as punters put off by lengthy contracts.

The raft of cheap iPad deals before Christmas appeared to finally put Apple’s best-selling tablet within reach of those who didn’t fancy fronting up upwards of £500 for a 3G-packing version. But a new report in The Times has suggested that sales of the subsidised slates have been less than impressive.

“Industry sources” told the paper that Orange, the first mobile operator to flog the iPad on contract, sold just 1,000 units in its first week. While Orange said sales had, “…grown week-on-week”, it hasn’t refuted the figure.

Three and T-Mobile’s stats are unclear, but it seems that none of the networks have done the business when it comes to the iPad. Orange’s poor numbers are said to be down to the pricey two year deal on offer, that despite the up front price being just £199 for a 16GB Wi-Fi and 3G model.

What’s more, research for Context last November showed that 80 per cent of British iPad owners were plumping for 3G versions. Perhaps it’s simply a case of punters not fancying being tied down and happy to pay for a SIM-free model instead.

Got an iPad on contract? Let us know about your experience with the networks on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

HTC tablet trademarks Scribe title ahead of CES unveiling?

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:16 AM PST

Will the HTC Scribe touch down at CES 2011?

HTC’s much awaited traipse into the land of tablet devices looks closer than ever as the Taiwanese tech giant is granted a trademark to name the upcoming product the HTC Scribe.

Filled on December 26th the patent application secures the Scribe moniker for a “handheld wireless device, namely a tablet computer” and hints towards the imminent arrival of the first tablet from the world’s largest producer of Android powered mobile devices.

Whilst details of the expected HTC tablet, asides from its newly crowned name, remain secret following the patent filing, it is widely believed that the device will launch running Google’s upcoming Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS and thus sport a high-resolution display and dual-core processor.

Expected to be lining up for a CES 2011 or Mobile World Congress unveiling alongside updates to the company’s fleet of high-end smartphones, the HTC tablet looks set to hit UK stores around March or April with, if past launches are a guide, a very competitive price tag.

What features would the mooted HTC tablet need to sport in order to topple the Apple iPad and the expected iPad 2? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 CES 2011 site for all the latest on the fleet of upcoming tablets.

Garmin announces StreetPilot satnav app for iPhone

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:04 AM PST

Better late than never from Garmin.

Satnav giant Garmin has finally arrived on the iPhone with the new StreetPilot application.

Garmin joins the likes of TomTom for iPhone and Co-Pilot on Apple's smartphone and offers turn-by-turn navigation, live traffic updates and up-to-date maps downloaded from Garmin's servers.

There's also speed limit information from major roads as well as the usual dose of interesting places, integration with your contacts book as well as the ability to call directly from a listing. There's also weather updates, 2D and 3D and easy switching between portrait and landscape view.

Naturally there's iOS multit5asking integration which allows you to run the app in the background and control the iPod too.

The move comes after Garmin placed all its eggs in the ill-fated Nuvifone basket, which attempted to combine its satnav expertise with a smartphone with extra large icons. The only problem was that iPhone and Android phones already had top quality satnav apps making their rather basic attempt at a smartphone rather redundant.

The app will cost $39.99 in the US. Can it take on TomTom and win?

Microsoft Apple TV rival set for CES 2011

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 07:30 AM PST

Reports claim pared down Windows device will soon be sitting pretty under your TV.

Microsoft will show off a spanking new set-top box at CES 2011, aimed at taking on both Apple and Google TV. That’s according to a report from the Seattle Times, which has got the inside line on the new telly-loving gadget.

Word to the wise is that it’ll rock a slimmed down edition of Windows, with a Media Centre-style UI to keep things basic and easy to handle. There’s no news on a name just yet, but Windows TV sounds like a good bet to us.

The report also claims the box will clock in at $200 (£128), twice the price of Apple TV. There’s no word on whether there’ll be an embedded version, a la Google TV, but expect to hear more at Microsoft’s CES press conference tomorrow night.

We’ll be reporting live, so stay tuned to our CES 2011 site and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep bang up-to-date.

Toshiba 10-inch Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet demoed

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:59 AM PST

Toshiba to challenge Apple with 10-inch Honeycomb tablet

Toshiba’s yet unnamed 10-inch Android 3.0, Honeycomb, tablet has been revealed in a number of hands-on images ahead of the device’s official unveiling at CES 2011.

Handed over to the folks at CNET, the Toshiba tablet, which features a 10.1-inch glass-covered, capacitive, LED-backlit display with multi-touch capabilities and a 1280 x 800p resolution will come sporting an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor and Adobe Flash support when it hits stores in the first half of 2011.

Running Google’s upcoming Honeycomb edition of the Android mobile operating system, much like the 10-inch Motorola device used by Google’s Andy Rubin to demo the future software release, Toshiba’s tablet offering is to come equipped with a bevy of connectivity options with a HDMI port, USB, mini-USB, SD card, in-built Wi-Fi, Bluestooth and GPS all as standard.

Further adding to areas missing from the current Apple iPad, the 10-inch Toshiba tablet is to pack dual cameras with a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper to be joined by a 5-megapixel camera on the rear.

Whilst Resolution+ video enhancement will allow for the upscaling of standard definition videos to that of near HD colour and contrast ratios, the upcoming device’s party piece comes in the form of its removable battery, a feature that none of the current breed of portable tablets boast.

Can the 10-inch Toshiba tablet challenge the iPad atop the tablet charts? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 CES 2011 site for all the latest from the Consumer Electronics Show.

Asus WAVI Xtion: Kinect-style motion controller incoming

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:28 AM PST

New offering set to debut in second quarter of 2011.

Microsoft isn't bringing Kinect to the PC just yet, so Asus has decided to prep its very own motion sensing effort and get itself a slice of the action. Dubbed the WAVI Xtion, it’s a joint venture with PrimeSense, who worked with the Big M on Kinect.

Due to drop some time after April, the WAVI Xtion will, “…allow users to enjoy and share PC content on TV with gestures.” It’s even got a dev kit, so wily developers can set about building dedicated apps, which punters will be able to snag at the Xtion store.

The device itself bears more than a passing resemblance to its Microsoft-made motion rival, but it could well do the business if Microsoft’s maintains its position of keeping Kinect tied to the Xbox 360.

Expect to see and hear more on the WAVI Xtion at CES 2011. You can get all the news from the Vegas gadget bash over on our dedicated microsite. And don’t forget you can keep bang up-to-date on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Call of Duty online content to add subscription-based tier

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:15 AM PST

COD to get paid-for additional online content

Online multiplayer modes of the phenomenally successful Call of Duty franchise are to be given a subscriptions-based “second tier” within the coming months, new analyst reports have revealed.

The predictions from industry analysts Wedbush Securities claim that the introduction of a monetised element to the COD online features will “occur during the first quarter of 2011" and build upon the franchise’s huge fan base that has already seen latest release, Call of Duty: Black Ops, record 600 million man hours of online game play in the opening 45 days from launch.

Discussing the possible introduction of paid-for online gaming modes, Wedbush’s January newsletter read: "Activision remains a top pick, primarily due to the company's potential to create and monetize a second tier of multiplayer online gaming for its Call of Duty franchise.

Back in September Activision hinted towards the imminent arrival of some form of subscription-based additional online content when it revealed “new service offerings” designed to “enhance” online revenues from the Call of Duty franchise were “in the pipeline”. At present it is unknown exactly what online content would be included within any such subscription-based offering.

Would you fork out extra for additional online Call of Duty content? Let us know your thoughts on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Toshiba glasses-free 3D laptop touted

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 03:36 AM PST

Tosh's new machine could spell the end for donning stupid specs for 3D fun.

Toshiba has pulled the wrappers off of a new Qosmio 3D laptop, which doesn’t require users to slap on stupid specs in order to chow down on three dimensional content.

It rocks two LCDs in order to serve up 3D images and even tracks punters eyes using the on-board webcam so you can watch in 3D when you’re not looking at the screen straight on.

Initial hands-on reports suggest it’s not quite up to scratch just yet, and while Tosh will have it at CES 2011, it’s not planning on releasing it, or a similar model, until the back end of 2011. Still, it’s one more thing coming out of Vegas to get het up about.

Lenovo updates entire laptop and All-in-One PC line

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 03:26 AM PST

See pics of the full Lenovo range at CES2011.T3.com

Lenovo, purveyor of some of the most criminally underrated PCs and laptops in the business, has rocked up at CES this year with an absolute arsenal of new machines. The laptops and all-in-one desktops are pretty beasts, but seem to have some pretty healthy specs to boot. Read on for the full details; we’ll try to do this as painlessly as possible…

Y470, Y570 and Y570d IdeaPad Laptops
The Y Series laptops are comprised of one 14-inch and two 15.6-inch LED models. While all three comfortably fit Intel Core i7, 8GB of DDR3 RAM and up to 1TB of storage into their seams, the Y570 stands out by boasting 3D, and a pair of 3D specs as standard. The base price will be $900 (£575) When they land in May.

V370, V470 and V570 IdeaPad Laptop

13.3-inch, 14-inch and 15.6-inch multimedia machines with varying levels of NVIDIA GeForce graphics, Blu-Ray drives and HDMI outs on top of similar specs to the Y Series. Yours for $600 (£383) in April.

Z370, Z470 and Z570 IdeaPad Laptop
The Z Series models have the same screen seizes as the V, but are the big daddies of the new lineup. They have Core 2011 CPUs, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, up to NVIDIA GeForce 525M 2GB graphics and Blu-Ray. The Z’s release date and cost remain a mystery, but we’ll keep you informed.

T3 at CES 2011
- See more pics of new the Lenovo range

A320 IdeaCentre All-in-One
The A Series is the slimmest, most attractive number, with a 21.5-inch full HD screen. It’s somehow stuffed with a 2.30GHz Intel Core i5 2nd generation CPU, 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM and a maximum of 750GB internal storage.

B520 IdeaCentre All-in-One
The B520 ups the ante to a 23-inch display, 16GB of RAM, Blu-Ray support and a whopping 2TB hard drive. There’s also Lenovo’s clever three-in-one mouse, which doubles as a Wiimote-style wand for wave-controlled browsing. The A and B Series desktops will be out in June, starting at $700 (£447).

C205 IdeaCentre All-in-One
Sitting on the budget end of Lenovo’s All-in-one spectrum, the C Series PC brings the screen size down to an 18.5-inch display. That said, there’s still AMD Radeon HD 6310 Series graphics, 8GB of RAM and 500GB internal storage. It’ll set you back just $450 (£287).

Sammy's flagship TV peaks out early

The latest edition to Samsung’s 9 Series range of 3DTVs has leaked ahead of its expected CES 2011 official unveiling later this week.

With dozens of 3DTVs expected to be unveiled and showcased at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sammy’s new flagship model has been snapped by Samsung Tomorrow sporting what is sure to be a show-stealing asymmetrical design.

Whilst full specs and pricing on the upcoming 9 Series LED-backlit 3DTV have yet to be revealed, the previewed images of the new model show a devilishly slim and slick design that thanks to its offset single stand and metallic construction will no doubt stand out from the waves of lifeless black boxes on display in the Las Vegas conference halls.

Apple prices up as VAT rise bites

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 02:41 AM PST

Cupertino chooses not to suck up new tax rise.

Apple has upped the price of all its products after VAT rose to 20 per cent here in Blighty at midnight. While many gadget purveyors are sucking up the tax hike in order to keep consumers on side, Cupertino has decided to pass it on to tech lovers instead.

Following the overnight rise, a basic 16GB Wi-Fi iPad costs £439, up from £429. The pricey Mac Pro has gone from £1,999 to £2.041. The iPhone, iPod touch and MacBook ranges have all been bumped up too.

While the rises aren’t too hefty, there’s a chance that sales could slow as punters across the UK look to tighten their belts. Apple, however, is clearly not too fussed.

Has the VAT rise put you off buying a new Apple toy? Or will you be dropping the last of your Christmas cash on an iPad or MacBook anyway? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
