Call of Duty: Black Ops parody released by Epic Games

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 07:59 AM PST

Call of Duty comes under attack from snide rival

Epic Games has made an underhand dig at the hugely popular Call of Duty gaming franchise by releasing a CoD parody game to promote its upcoming release Bulletstorm.

Dubbed Duty Calls the fully playable single level makes snide jibes at the recently released Call of Duty: Black Ops title which took the gaming world by storm following its arrival late last year. This week saw the arrival of the first Call of Duty: Black Ops downloadable content pack, First Strike with a number of new multiplayer levels hitting the first person shooter.

Sure to split opinion the parody release which is available as a download repeatedly targets areas of the gaming franchise that has often been criticised as taking itself too seriously with slow-motion action sequences, narrative enhancing dialogue and enemy communications all coming under attack.

Simplistic and quick to complete, one user has posted a complete video walk through of Duty Calls, visible below, taking just over four minutes of humour-filled gameplay to complete the release.

With Bulletstorm set to be released for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in the UK on February 25th, Epic Games has been heavily pushing the claim that its upcoming title will “put the fun back into gun”.

Are you a Call of Duty fanatic or do you appreciate the lighter side of the gaming genre? Let us know your opinion on the Duty Calls parody via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play PSP Phone video advert leaks

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 07:18 AM PST

Xperia Play outed again in official video

Yet more information has leaked on the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset, formerly known as the PSP Phone, with the latest prematurely released details outing the device’s first video advertisement.

Unleashed by Norwegian website DroidNYTT, the video of what is claimed to be the Xperia Play’s first televised advertisement shows the first official gameplay footage on the long-awaited device with racing sims, sci-fi and combat games all getting the PSP Phone treatment.

Somewhat disappointingly the touted graphics of the Xperia Play do not look of improved quality to other current breed of smartphones such as the Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S.

If legit the leaked advert, viewable below, will run closer to the censors limits and no doubt attract a number of overtly PC and busybody complaints as the Google Android robot logo goes under the knife for a slightly tasteless human thumb transplant.

Although yet to be officially confirmed by Sony Ericsson the Xperia Play, touted as PlayStation certified in the leaked video, is widely expected to be officially unveiled at the company’s pre-MWC 2011 press conference due to take place in Barcelona on Sunday February 13th.

Will the PSP Phone live up to expectation or fall dramatically wide of the mark? Share your thoughts on the upcoming device via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android Market Web App Store launches online

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 04:09 AM PST

Straightforward site makes Android app browsing easier

Among the hubbub of yesterdays Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) announcement, it was easy to miss the unassuming news that Google has completely refreshed the web version of the Android Market. The Market web store, which has gone live now, brings the online presence of the Market in line with what’s currently offered by Apple – namely a list of every available app, with pictures, reviews and charts.

Previously, Android’s web store only sported a ‘featured’ section, and the info on offer was somewhat sparse. This update should allow users to properly scan and compare apps on their computers before downloading. Another update came in the form of in-app payments, which will allow for extra content, such as levels for games to be bought on the go.

In-app payments is a feature sweeping the board at the moment; BlackBerry App World has just received a bump up to version 2.1, which also gifts the purchasing option du jour. What do you make of the new Android Market web store? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

FIFA 12 to get Rooney contract saga-style stories?

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 04:00 AM PST

FIFA gameplay getting 'harder to improve'

Fernando Torres could be on his way out of Chelsea by October time if plans to introduce player stories makes it into FIFA 12.

FIFA creative director Gary Paterson revealed details of possible improvements which could be in store for FIFA 12 with the closed transfer window period a hot topic of discussion.

Speaking to PSM3 magazine Paterson said, "I think the idea of creating stories throughout the year is something we're very interested in as well.

"It's about creating a football world you immerse yourself in, thing like, you know, the Rooney story (when he said he want to leave Man Utd and then signed a new contract). (That's) definitely interesting to us.

"Things to do while the transfer window's closed is certainly something that we're looking at."

Paterson revealed that EA will also look at the matchday atmosphere element adding that is was "something we need to invest in."

The FIFA versus Pro Evolution rivalry is one of the longest gaming rivalries going, and with the EA game seemingly stealing a march in recent years, Paterson added that FIFA's gameplay is getting, “harder and harder to improve on.”

EA has not given any word on an official FIFA 12 release date, but we expect it to land in its usual October/November slot, minus a certain Mr Gray commentating on proceedings we imagine.

Sony NGP: Big S wants to match PSP sales

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Kaz Hirai talks up PSP 2 on official PlayStation blog.

With the dust finally settling on the Sony NGP, or the PSP 2 as it’s still known round these parts, the Big S’s Kaz Hirai has started talking up plans for the next-gen handheld.

Speaking in an interview on the official PlayStation blog, Hirai says that Sony’s initial hope for the NGP is simple. "One of the things we want to accomplish with the NGP is match - number one - the install base that we have on PSP worldwide."

The original handheld had shifted just over 62 million by September last year, meaning Sony will need to work hard to ensure it can reach that number, all while taking on the might of the Nintendo 3DS.

Hirai reckons the inclusion of 3G and touch panels on the front and back will help the NGP best its predecessor and stake its claim as the number one handheld out there. He also took time to show off some of the new titles, including the awesome new Uncharted game.

The NGP isn’t out until the end of 2011. Make sure you tell us what you think of Sony’s new effort on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb: Google unsure of smartphone plans

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 02:01 AM PST

Google exec admits Honeycomb will be tablet only for time being.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb is undoubtedly going to give Apple’s iOS a hell of a lot to think about when it lands on a slew of killer tablets in the next few months.

But the latest version of Google’s open source OS, revealed in full at a San Francisco event yesterday, is still some way off heading to smartphones. That’s according to Google’s Hugo Barra, who admitted that plans to move cross platform were still sketchy.

Quizzed about when Honeycomb’s features would be heading to Android blowers, Barra said, “We really don’t know,” he said. “That’s a conversation we are just beginning to have right now internally with the team.”

That will no doubt concern those who think Android, while surging ahead, is becoming fragmented beyond repair. Barra did say, though, that some Honeycomb skills will be heading to mobiles at some point. “A lot of the things we have created for Honeycomb will make their way back into phones as well–things like the visual themes, some of the thinking on notifications, for example.”

That suggests that any mobile update will have a different code name, with Honeycomb reserved solely for slates. Is Google allowing its OS to become fragmented too easily? Or do you prefer its open platform? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Apple enforcing mag and paper in-app purchases from 31 March

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:52 PM PST

Tightening up comes as Apple looks to squeeze more money from publishers.

It seems Apple’s rejection of the Sony Reader iPhone app was just the start on a new front in its war to keep control of all content sold through its App Store. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that as of 31 March, publishers will be have to offer in-app purchasing for mags and papers.

The news comes just a day after The Daily was unveiled, with Apple clearly keen to stamp out the practice of publishers sending punters away from apps and onto websites to snaffle new content.

Apple’s Eddy Cue, who helped unveil The Daily yesterday, has said the option to buy new content from websites will be available as long as in-app purchases are supported too. This rule has been in place for some time, but Apple has decided now’s the time to start enforcing it properly.

The aim is to ensure Apple maintains strict control over the App Store, as well as make money from publishers. The new App Store rolling subscription service, revealed at The Daily launch, means Apple makes cash from Murdoch and co’s new iPad-only venture.

Is Apple exerting to much control over publishers and devs? Or is it right to try and squeeze every last penny from its online emporium? Tell us what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

iPad 2 spied at The Daily event

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:31 PM PST

iPad 2 front-facing camera spotted by eagle-eyed hack.

The Daily might have grabbed the headlines yesterday, but the iPad 2 is back under the microscope again today, after a prototype of the next-gen tablet was apparently spotted at the unveiling of Murdoch’s new news venture.

Spied by a “Reuters eyewitness”, the updated iPad apparently sported a front-facing camera sitting atop the screen. Described as a “working model”, Reuters was unable to get a longer look at the device to confirm whether it packs a SD slot.

Apple and News International have unsurprisingly kept schtum about the apparent leak. But with The Daily finally unleashed, surely it’s just a few short weeks until we see the iPad 2 head into the wild.
