The rugged WG1 compact camera which is both shockproof and crushproof, is also able to withstand a freefall from 1.5 metres high and the pressure of a weight of up to 100 Kg. The Optio WG1 GPS boasts almost identical features but additionally includes geotagging courtesy of a built-in GPS function automatically storing your position. That means when you glance over them at home, you can locate the photos on Google Earth for instance.

In the snapping department, both house a 14-megapixel CCD sensor, a wide-angle 5x optical zoom, and utilize a 2.7 inch LCD screen with a 230 000 dots resolution. There 's also HD video recording (1280x720), and an “enhanced microscope” function allowing you to enlarge pictures by up to 6 times.

Offering something a little more on the stylish side, the K-5 DSLR  now sports a shiny new finish to go with its 16-Megapixel shooting prowess. Other changes include a redesigned handle for greater comfort, and an update with the latest firmware.

Three pancake lenses (smc DA 40mm f/2.8,  smc DA 21mm f/3.2 AL and smc DA 70mm f/2.4) will also be available in silver for the K-5.

The WG1 which comes in black/blue and in purple is set to retail at £269 and the WG1 GPS (available in green and grey/black) at £299. Pricing for the K-5 has yet to be confirmed but there will only be 50 available in the UK. All three models are up for grabs in March 2011.

Gaming giants stumble as both Gran Turismo 5 and Call of Duty: Black Ops came under fire today. Whilst GT has been hit by issues to the GT Academy as it is discovered a large portion of entrants were cheating, Call of Duty has been parodied with the Duty Calls mock minigame release officially topping the 1 million download mark.

White handsets unite
to trump Apple's issue-hit white iPhone 4. Although the white iPhone 4 has edged closer to arrival with the leaking of Best Buy in-store handset signage, the Google Nexus S has been confirmed to have a lighter-hued model launching in the UK shortly and adding extra insult to Apple's very open injury.

New Google Android
devices are no rarity but two of the most anticipated additions to the OS's numerous product list have both appeared today with leaked images of the HTC Desire 2 appearing following the outing of the Motorola Xoom tablet that is to bring Android 3.0 to users for a hefty $800, ouch.

Duty Calls; Call of Duty parody tops 1 million downloads

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 09:11 AM PST

Bulletstorm teaser reaches massive heights

A fully playable Call of Duty parody title that was digitally released last week has topped the one million download mark in a matter of days.

Released to promote the upcoming launch of Bulletstorm, a first person shooter that its developer Epic Games believes will “put the fun back into gun”, the parody entitled Duty Calls repeatedly mocks the Call of Duty franchise that has been often ridiculed for taking itself too seriously.

Proclaiming the landmark download figurers Epic Games tweeted “1.25 million Duty Calls downloads!” via the official Buelletstorm Twitter feed adding: “We say thanks with Duty Calls Wallpapers over at our Facebook page."

The minigame, compiling of around four minutes of humour-filled gameplay, visible below, taunts the CoD franchise with meaningless narrative enhancing dialogue, slow-motion action sequences and cut scenes all coming under fire.

Bulletstorm will officially launch for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on February 25th and will now be tasked with emulating the success of its competitor mocking minigame preview.

Is the Call of Duty franchise the all powerful genre-dominating powerhouse it claims to be or a jumped up franchise too big for its boots? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Gran Turismo Academy hit by widespread cheating

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 08:18 AM PST

Online racing challenge hit by foul play

The second stage of the Gran Turismo Academy 2011 has had to be scrapped after it was discovered a large portion of competitors had been caught cheating during the round.

Having discovered a loophole that allowed racers to go off track and skip a number of long tricky corner sections without punishment, a number of academy gamers were found to be using unsportsmanlike tactics, visible below, in order to gain an advantage over users sticking to the rules, and the tarmac.

Running across the US, GT Academy will feature a series of online time trials through the repeatedly delay hit but recently released Gran Turismo 5 with the 50,000 registered competitors being whittled down to one eventual winner who will then go on to be a real-life racing driving competing in a race with a Nissan race team in the states.

Having spotted the loophole allowing gamers to unashamedly cheat in their droves on the original stage two track of the GT Academy, developer Polyphony Digital rescheduled the round for another course before the issues once again appeared resulting in the complete cancellation of the stage.

Was Gran Turismo 5 really worth the endless hype and repeatedly prolonged wait? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Last.fm to adopt Spotify-style monthly subscription model

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 08:13 AM PST

Windows Phone 7 users will still get service for free.

Using Last.fm on a mobile device and home entertainment system will now cost £3-a-month as the popular music streaming service seeks to earn some Spotify-style subscription dollar.

The app, which operates on the same premise as Pandora and Slacker Radio in that it allows users to listen to music based on their preferences. Unlike Spotify, which costs £9.99 a month, you can't listen to your songs of choice, only those selected by Last.fm.

The subscription model has been long in the offing. Up until now, it has only been the UK, the US and Germany which has escaped the monthly fee. Last.fm users on the web will still access the service for free while Xbox Live users and Windows 7 Phone owners will not be subjected to the fee.

So what's it going to be folks? Spotify and a world of song choice and offline playlists for a tenner a month or £3 a month to let Last.fm choose your songs for you and help you on the road to discovering new artists?

Apple iPad 2 release date to see carbon fibre body land?

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 07:37 AM PST

Carbon fibre to replace aluminium in iPad 2 design

With the iPad 2 rumour mill seemingly exhausted of new ideas a number of predictions have started to do another round with the second-generation Apple tablet once again pegged to sport a carbon fibre body when unveiled.

Although stating “our source urges caution on this point”, the folks at iLounge have claimed that Apple will do away with the iPad’s current brushed aluminium casing instead opting for a carbon fibre shell to adorn the eagerly-awaited upcoming tablet follow-up.

Tipped as a weight saving, and no doubt money adding, move, iLounge has claimed that Apple “will use a new material similar to carbon fibre rather than aluminium for upcoming iPads.”

With the Cupertino-based fruity tech company having already filled patents on this lighter weight casing move these latest claims add fuel to the belief that the iPad 2’s imminent arrival, expected to be unveiled alongside iOS 4.3 on February 14th, will see a carbon fibre inclusion.

If true the move from aluminium to carbon fibre would not be the first time Apple has shifted body material in a portable device in order to save weight. Have included an aluminium enclosure on the original iPhone, Apple opted for a switch to plastic come the 3G.

Which is more important to you in the upcoming Apple iPad 2, improved aesthetics and weight saving or the improbably inclusion of Flash player capabilities? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google predicts search engine will "just know" user's needs

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 07:00 AM PST

Google to use user location to predict search trends

Google has teased that the future of internet search will omit user input stating that the company’s search software will “just know” what users are wanting to search.

The futuristic claims came direct from Google’s Executive Chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt who, talking with the Telegraph at the World Economic Forum in Davos, declared: "We still think of search as something you type. Perhaps a decade from now, you will think, well, that was interesting, I used to type but now it just knows."

Expanding to explain the theory being this autonomous, pre-emptive search Schmidt said: "How does it know? Well, on mobiles we know where you are, down to the nearest foot. You've chosen to log in, with your permission, and it knows where you are and it can provide a personalised service." Somewhat scarily Schmidt added: "Technically, with your permission, we know where you are, we know your history, we can do data extraction and look at what it tells us."

Keen to express Google is only using data its clients permit it to use Schmidt went on to predict: "In 50 years it is reasonable to assume in technology that all of these distinctions between computers and cloud will have gone away. There will be a ubiquitous computational capability that is just so free and so amazing that people will assume that it is an assistant. It knows who you are, it knows what you do, it makes suggestions, it intuits things for you."

Far from the mind-reading witchcraft it might first appear to be, Schmidt’s predictions of a search engine that will “just know” what users want point towards a predictive search system that will learn from user habits and general surroundings to offer a selection of possible user needs.

What tech service would you most like to see become a thought-reading automated system requiring no user input? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Secret Angry Birds level teased during Super Bowl advert

Angry Birds developer Rovio has announced it is to bring the bird-flinging gaming sensation to the Nintendo 3DS later this year as the title’s iOS and Android offerings add 16 new levels in a free update.

Responding to fan enquiries via micro-blogging site Twitter,  Rovia confirmed it was planning to take its global phenomenon of a game to Nintendo consoles declaring: “Wii and 3DS later in the year.”

The Angry Birds creators went on to add that the Nintendo-bound releases will be available exclusively as a digital download stating: "We prefer downloads and digital distribution on all platforms, it's green like the pigs."

Expanding on exactly what Angry Birds content future 3DS owners can expect, the Rovia Twitter feed went on to say: “we would bring all three current Angry Birds games over,” in reference to the standard Angry Birds title, Angry Birds Seasons and the upcoming movie tie-in Angry Birds Rio.

Entitled Ham ‘Em High, the free mobile platform update, available for download now via Apple’s App Store and the Android market, adds 15 western themed levels to the mobile gaming sensation with a 16th hidden level being teased in a advert for the upcoming film release Rio aired in the US during last night’s Super Bowl.

Canon expand DLSR range with the EOS 600D and 1100D

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 04:36 AM PST

Canon target entry-level DSLR market with two new models

Canon has announced the expansion of its EOS range of entry-level Digital SLR cameras as it officially introduces the Canon EOS 600D and the Canon Eos 1100D.

The two new body models come after the Japanese camera giant announced it had breached a new landmark having produced the 60 millionth EF lens, 24 years after the first unit rolled off the production line.

Sporting an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 4 image processor with Full HD video capture capabilities the EOS 600D will allow wannabe owners the ability to quickly switch between high-end still and video shooting. Attuning itself to the complete DLSR newbie the EOS 1100D will sport a 12.2-megapixel sensor and allow for 720p HD video recording.

Set to launch in the UK in early April of this year the EOS 600D, whilst available in a number of bundle deals with a range of compatible lenses, will set wannabe owners back £679 for the body. The EOS 1100D will launch alongside its higher-speced counterpart priced just £419.

White Samsung Nexus S heads to Vodafone

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 03:42 AM PST

While Apple continues to scratch its head over how to turn the iPhone white, Google's flagship Samsung Nexus S has been given a re-spray.

The Samsung Nexus S spec remains largely the same as its black counterpart - 1GHZ Cortex A8 processor, a 4 inch touchscreen and a 5 MP camera with autofocus – but Google are using this knight in shining white armour to launch Gingerbread, the latest incarnation of Android on this side of the pond.

Unlike the phone’s exterior, the backgrounds on the phone’s OS are now black – which we’re told wasn’t a stylistic choice, but in fact helps improves contrast and battery life.

Other additions include an improved downloads app that let’s you manage PDF and email downloads more effectively, and it’s also the first time Brits will have access to Near Field Communication technology (NFC). In a nutshell the technology allows people to pay for goods and services by simply swiping their phones over an NFC reader.

While the Japanese have been enjoying the benefits of buying cans of pop and cinema tickets (among other things) via their phones, the UK has been strangely reticent towards the technology. Until now it seems.

Vodafone has the bragging rights as first operator in the UK to sell the phone, but they’re remaining schtum over prices and an official launch date.

White iPhone 4 release date imminent as signage appears

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 03:20 AM PST

Apple iPhone 4 to finally see white model

Apple’s elusive white iPhone 4 is seemingly on the cusp of arrival as the long-awaited handset is once again teased with retailer Best Buy reportedly outing its in-store signage for the heavily delayed device.

Proclaiming the new arrival of the 16GB white iPhone 4, Best Buy’s signage offers up the lighter-toned Apple blower contract free to Stateside fans on the AT&T network for $599.99, matching the price of the standard black model. Signage for both the 16 and 32GB white iPhone 4 options contracted to the Bell network have also appeared at Best Buy with handset prices coming in at $159.95 and $269.95 respectively.

Originally pegged for arrival alongside its black counterpart back in June of last year the white iPhone 4 has been repeatedly plagued by delays over the past seven months with everything from discoloured home buttons to excessive light entering the handset’s camera being blamed for its continued postponement.

Best Buy’s store pricing leaks are the latest in a recent spate of white iPhone 4 teases that seem to suggest Apple’s previous declaration of a spring arrival could indeed come to fruition. Having appeared on the inventory lists of Vodafone Germany and popped up in the UK via Orange and T-Mobile an apparent inside source has reported the white device will touch down in the UK next month.

Has the time of anticipation and excitement for the white iPhone 4 passed by with the device’s repeated failures to arrive? Share your thoughts on Apple’s lighter-hued handset via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android 2.x now on 90 per cent of Google phones

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Most phones now on more recent versions of Google's OS.

Google Android might be bossing it at the top of the smartphone charts, but it’s still dogged by accusations that the myriad versions of the OS have led to fragmentation and confusion among consumers.

But the Big G’s latest numbers on which versions of Android are being used shows that over 90 per cent of its phones are now rocking Android 2.1 or higher. That at least means ancient builds are being phased out, with the likes of Sony Ericsson finally upgrading their Android phones from 1.6 in recent months.

The stats show Android 2.2 FroYo remains the most popular, with 57.6 per cent of all users. Android 2.1 has a 31.4 per cent cut, while the most recent version, 2.3 Gingerbread, accounts for just 0.8 per cent.

The latter figure is no surprise seeing as the OS is only available on the Google Nexus S. The Nexus One has still not received an over-the-air update to the latest edition of Android.

Is Android still suffering from fragmentation nightmares? Or has Google got the problem licked? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Sony Ericsson XPeria Play: PSP Phone now official

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 02:37 AM PST

Games-loving smartphone is set for an MWC unveiling

Everyone knows that the most expensive and sought-after advertising slot in the world is during half time at the Super Bowl, and last night Sony Ericsson paid through the nose to get its XPeria Play Android smartphone right there. The minute-long advert, the same as was leaked last week (and is below), acts as official confirmation of the handset also known as the PSP Phone.

The Android-running XPeria Play ad showed the phone doing its gaming thing, with Sony Ericsson announcing that the official unveiling will take place at 6pm GMT on February 13th, during Mobile World Congress 2011.

The handset sports a slide-out set of physical gaming controls bearing the official Playstation buttons, plus a couple of touch-sensitive joystick alternatives. Little is known about the launch games, but they’ll be available through the inbuilt Playstation Suite software. Stay tuned for our coverage of the official announcement. In the mean time, let us know if you want the XPeria Play on the T3 Twitter feed.

Motorola XOOM price sighted at $800

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 02:24 AM PST

Premium price expected for Moto tablet

Motorola XOOM tablet fans could be expected to pay around $800 (£496) for the device according to pricing information leaked from a Best Buy advertisement.

Supporting earlier claims that the XOOM would carry a huge price tag around its neck, the latest information appears to confirm that the first tablet to host Android 3.0 Honeycomb will cost $799.

A XOOM release date is also listed as February 24th, while data tariffs ranging from $20 for 1GB to a hefty $80 for 10GB are also revealed.

Unveiled at CES last month, the XOOM is set to come equipped with an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera alongside a 5-megapixel snapper on the rear amongst its notable features.

In other Motorola XOOM-related news, the first official advert for the Android tablet popped up in one of those lucrative Super Bowl slots (remember the Megan Fox Motorola Devour one from last year?) clearly taking a little inspiration from Apple's infamous '1984' advert. If you didn't stay up to watch the Packers versus the Steelers, you can see the Motorola XOOM video below.

iPad 2 event set for end of February?

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 02:04 AM PST

Yet more iPad 2 release chatter hits the web.

With iOS 4.3 mooted for release this time next week, it’s perhaps not unreasonable to surmise that the iPad 2 won’t be far behind the software update. And that’s exactly what Japanese Mac site Macotakara reckons, claiming Cupertino is plotting an iPad 2 event for the end of February.

It says that following a small gathering to unveil the second-gen slate, Apple will look to release the iPad 2 at the start of March, although it says it’s unclear on whether this will happen simultaneously, or be staged by territory as it was with the original iPad last year.

With a slew of case and screen leaks in recent weeks, there’s no doubt that the iPad 2 will soon be with us. But until Apple sends out event invites and gets the tech world jabbering excitedly, an exact date remains unknown.

Does the end of February seem like a likely date for the iPad 2 release? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Toshiba glasses-free 3D TV struggles in Japan

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 01:18 AM PST

Small sizes and epic price tags do for Tosh's latest line-up.

Glasses-free 3D might be the holy grail for many gadget fans. But it seems Japanese tech lovers are not so keen on Toshiba’s spanking new GL1 range, with disappointing sales figures suggesting punters aren’t quite ready to make the jump to three dimensions minus the specs.

The 20-inch GL1 shifted just 500 in its first month on Japanese shelves, while the positively postage-stamp sized 12-inch effort apparently sold even less. Tosh had hoped to sell 1,000 of each after they both launched back in December.

It’s perhaps no surprise. The 20-inch version costs a massive £1,805. For that you can get two 40-inch Toshiba Regza WL768B sets on Amazon and still have a fiver left to go down the pub and toast your new purchases.

Toshiba has admitted that size is also an issue, with the company’s Masaaki Osumi saying, “What the numbers say to me is that if you offer bigger sets, you get a better, more positive reaction.” That’s handy seeing as it unveiled 56 and 65-inch 3D glasses-free TVs at CES back in January.

HTC Desire 2: new pics and details outed

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 11:46 PM PST

Top-end cell set to be unveiled at MWC next week.

The HTC Desire 2 now looks like a dead cert for Mobile World Congress 2011, which kicks off in Barcelona this time next week. The new top-end Android blower has been spotted in a series of leaks, with stacks of details on what we can expect.

- HTC Desire 2 pictures

The sequel to the best-selling, Android-defining Desire rocks a 3.8-inch Super AMOLED screen, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread under the hood. The guys at Android Forums reckon its about 5mm smaller than the original, with a front-facing camera and a sturdier battery cover.

The pics show a phone that’s been tweaked rather than changed completely, but inside it’s said to have a lightning fast chip. Late last week, the blower showed up in Vodafone Germany's inventory lists, meaning a launch can’t be that far away.

iOS 4.3 landing 14 February?

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 11:35 PM PST

Latest gossip follows welter of rumours surrounding latest iOS upgrade.

Apple will release iOS 4.3 next Monday 14 February according to a new report from the Cupertino fans at MacStories. Word comes from a “reliable source”, with the date tying in with previous rumours surrounding the operating system upgrade.

Last week gossip was rife about iOS 4.3, thanks largely to the release of Rupert Murdoch’s The Daily newspaper for iPad. The paper requires a new in-app purchasing function in order to work, but is being given away for free during its first two weeks on the virtual news stand.

Once that grace period runs out, Apple will have to release iOS 4.3. Apple’s Eddy Cue admitted at the launch of the paper that it would making an announcement about the update soon.

The MacStories report says the update will be released at 10am PST on 14 February, so expect to see the Wi-Fi hotspot-packing software boost land on UK-based iPads and iPhones from about 6pm.
