Tech Week: The Daily launches and iPad 2 spotted

Posted: 05 Feb 2011 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
This week’s most high-profile launch was that of The Daily, the first iPad specific newspaper which has come from an Apple and News Corp joint venture. Having leaked just minutes before its official unveiling we were privy to The Daily’s details ahead of hearing confirmation from the mouth of Rupert Murdoch. Having been officially unveiled with 100 pages of original daily content, interactive design features and a US-only readership for $40 a year it was just a matter of days before the full Daily offering was to be discovered available completely free online.

Following The Daily’s arrival one eagle-eyed attending journo announced he has spotted the iPad 2 at the newspaper app unveiling sporting a front-facing camera. Following this claimed sighting details have emerged around a possible unveiling next week as the mooted tablet is pegged as sporting a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Whilst insider sources have claimed SD card slot inclusion rumours are wide of the mark, others have suggested the second-gen iPad will boast an anti-reflective screen.

Nintendo’s 3Ds is now less than two months from its UK arrival with the glasses-free 3D pocket gamer set to touch down at £199.99 via Sainsbury’s the first major retailer to offer the upcoming console for under the £200 mark. With the announcement that Super Mario Bros will be made available for the 3DS shortly after launch we at T3 went for an in-depth hands-on with the 3D gaming device to test out a couple of titles that will be available at launch. For our full expert opinion, hands-on pictures and a little video, read on. Not fussed about our opinion, check out what the T3 readers think will triumph in the battle between 3DS and Sony's NGP.

Holographic security staff materialise at UK airports

Posted: 05 Feb 2011 05:03 AM PST

The future is here, and it wants you to remove your belt and shoes.

Holiday makers jetting off from London Luton or Manchester airport will be greeted at security by a pseudo-holographic double team of staffers in a bid to speed up security checks.

The two new virtual members of staff, named Holly and Graham (geddit?) are tasked with reminding passengers to take off shoes and belts, remove laptops and advise them on the restrictions on liquids in carry-on luggage as they pass through security.

The virtual staffers are, according to managing director of Luton airport Glyn Jones, far from just gimmicks. "They are absolutely remarkable to look at," he said to the BBC, "they will catch people's attention and also be really consistent in the message that they give." He'll get no argument from us - watch the BBC clip in full yourself for a peek.

What other space age touches would you see added to the UK's airports? Let us know via e-mail or on the T3 Twitter feed.

O2 to launch NFC mobile payments app

Posted: 05 Feb 2011 03:51 AM PST

O2 planning a mobile wallet app for its phones with NFC capability.

NFC (near field communication) has already arrived in the UK - sort of. Allowing users to make payments using their handset is one of the proud boasts of the Google Nexus S - even though right now there aren't really any places to use it in this country.

O2, however, is jumping on the future-technology-of-the-moment, according to a spokesperson who announced the company's plans to introduce a "mobile wallet" with compatible handsets sometime later this year.

Full details are being withheld until closer to the mooted release date (we're hearing sometime in the second half of 2011), but the same spokesperson did reveal that O2 were planning to use the tech for mobile payments, person-to-person money transfer and top-ups for its Pay and Go smartphones.

This makes O2 the third provider to express interest in the NFC technology, after the Orange/T-Mobile tag team Everything Everywhere made a similar announcement earlier this week. Aside from the Google Nexus S, the next hot-tip smartphone to incorporate the NFC technology is rumoured to be Apple's iPhone 5 - we'll know more when MWC rolls around on February 14th.

LG Optimus 3D to arrive on 3

Posted: 05 Feb 2011 03:17 AM PST

LG's 3D MWC contender teased for release on 3.

A tweet-person for 3 made the announcement - somewhat cryptically - by posting the message "Something is coming" to the 3 Twitter feed, followed by a link to an Optimus 3D YouTube trailer.

OK, so it's not that cryptic, but 3's Twitter followers chased it up anyway, asking for clarification on whether this meant the LG smartphone - with its dual-video 3D recording on top of its 3D display - was indeed to be sold on the 3 network. To this, 3 responded: "Yes, it's coming to Three".

No further details were wrangled out of the anonymous tweeter, and while no release date has been disclosed, 3 are promising that they "will keep everyone updated".

App week: The Daily launched, DS emulator for Android

Posted: 05 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

PlayStation Suite for Android incoming
In a landmark week for the iPad, The Daily newspaper has finally left the digital printing press following a saga more drawn out than Fernando Torres leaving Liverpool. The News Corp Apple hook up is the first publication produced exclusively for the iPad. Is The Daily going to change the way you consume news? No iPad? Fear not, you can read it for free everyday thanks to this lovely gratis loophole

Android 3.0 opens doors for top apps
The worry about Android tablets has been the distinct lack of specifically-designed apps, but that's all about to change thanks to Wednesday's launch of Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which promises to be a godsend for app developers. Bubble widgets will display different layers of content on the homescreen, app fragments will give apps a new sense of usability, while YouTube looks great with the 3D graphics

NIntendo DS games on your Android?
It's getting better, but Android just doesn't offer the top-level marquee games that the App Store does. So how about throwing a Nintendo DS emulator into the mix? Beta app Tiger Lab shows the possibilities with this proof-of-concept app that allows you to play your ROMs on your Android phone. Beware, it's a very, very early prototype, though.

Android Market web store
It has been a massive week for the Android Market. The announcement that Google was finally launching a web store for it's Android Market was a more footnote in the Honeycomb presentation, but an important one at that. Now Android owners can install apps on their phone directly from their computers, with no cables. Hooray!

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

A five star Windows Phone 7 game
The Windows App Marketplace is developing quite nicely, with a host of top level apps scoring highly. The Impossible Game is the latest app to excite our team of app reviewers. It's a simple game, but no matter how skilled you become, you'll still need up to 100 tries at each level. Sound infuriating or illuminating? Give it a try.

Smartphone apps saved the radio star
TuneIn Radio has been tearing up the competition across multiple platforms and now it debut's on Android ready to do the same. With access to the web streams of thousands of stations worldwide and a smashing interface, it's really a no brainer. Get your BlackBerry tuned in with a free download

FIFA 11 scores on the iPad
Remember the days when EA's FIFA franchise was to ProEvo what Emile Heskey is to Didier Drogba? Well those days are gone, with the behemoth spreading out to the iPad. As a straight comparison to the console giant it doesn't quite match up, but you won't find a better footy sim app than FIFA 11 on the iPad.
