Sony apologise for cyber hack and warn of hit on profits Posted: 01 May 2011 02:41 PM PDT Posted by T3 Online on Sun 1 May 2011 The company faces renewed questions on the risks to PlayStation Network users Sony’s top brass have finally provided a humbling mea culpa to the 77m users potentially affected by the biggest security breach in cyber history which has left users personal data and possibly credit card details open to abuse by hackers. Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony's computer entertainment division, said at a press conference in Tokyo. “We apologise deeply for causing great unease and trouble to our users.” He continued. "We take the security of our consumers' information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. I see my work as first making sure Sony can regain the trust of our users." As the financial ramifications of the hack start to become clear, Sony has admitted that compensating customers forced to cancel their credit cards may affect profits. Sony have already offered one month's free access to its users to deter them from leaving for alternative services, such as Microsoft's Xbox Live. Much of the criticism has centred on the six-day delay in announcing the unprecedented security breach, in case it deflected attention away from the release of two Sony Android tablets that were announced last week, a charge that was flatly denied. The company said PlayStation Network, which gives users the opportunity play each other online and download games and music will resume this week. The service, which in the UK has an estimated 3m players, has been offline since April 20. Is Sony’s apology enough to stop you defecting to one of its rivals? Recent figures from Net Applications show that the browser is closing in on a 12% share, since launching in September 2008. The increase comes as Google prepares to launch its Chrome Operating System on Samsung and Acer netbooks this summer. Chrome gained a 11.9% market share last month, up 0.4%, while Microsoft Internet Explorer continued to lose share, dipping from 55.9% to 55.1%. Apple's Safari browser share rose from 6.6 per cent to 7.1%, while Mozilla Firefox had a slight fall, dropping from 21.8% to 21.6%. Chrome has been making steady gains for the past 12 months though it hasn't enjoyed a full percentage point growth spurt in several months. This news comes as Google’s Chrome Operating System is expected to be introduced in June or July. The Chrome OS is a lightweight, Web-based operating system that departs from Microsoft Windows and Apple style platforms. LG Optimus 2X enters the Guinness Book of Records Posted: 01 May 2011 07:48 AM PDT Posted by T3 Online on Sun 1 May 2011 LG Optimus 2X first past the post in dual-core processor race LG has managed to coerce the venerable Guinness organisation into awarding it a World Record for being the first mobile phone to hit the market with a dual-core processor. They were even awarded a shiny certificate to record their ‘achievement’. Now we didn’t count LG as Roy Castle and Norris McWhirter fans, but the South Korean giant is obviously desperate to prove they are out looking down on rivals in the processor speed race. They’ll also be equally keen to thumb their noses at their perennial Seoul-based rivals Samsung, who are soon to release their hugely capable Galaxy S 2 dual-core model in the UK. The flagship Optimus 2X was released here last week at Carphone Warehouse and packs a blazing NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 4.0 Super AMOLED screen and an 8MP camera. The phone boasts Android 2.2, but with all that power at their disposal, new owners will also be hoping for a 2.3 Gingerbread boost in the coming months. Is this a record worth shouting about or is smartphone success down to far more than processor speed?
