Tech Today: Apple iOS Maps, Nintendo Wii 2 storage Posted: 03 May 2011 02:22 PM PDT
It's the tech news that broke after you logged-off Adobe Photoshop for iPad moved a step closer today with the launch of three desktop companion apps, which offer improved functionality with use of the Apple tablet. Photoshop Touch Eazel, Color Lava and Nav. The apps allow you to control the tools over Wi-Fi, mix new colours and, of course, fingerpaint.
Sony chief Sir Howard Stringer is coming under pressure to quit the company following the latest Sony hack which brought down the Sony Online Entertainment portal on Monday. The Welsh CEO could, according to reports, end up being the fall guy after it was revealed that the personal data of another 25 million users had been compromised.
Apple is on the lookout for an engineer to take its iOS Maps app to a new level according to a recent job posting. The company is advertising for someone to work on "innovative features" and "sophisticated user interfaces". Could Apple be about to ditch Google Maps for its own service?
The BlackBerry PlayBook may go 3D with an over-the-air update in the future after RIM showcased 3D content created by The Astonishing Tribe - a recent RIM acquisition. The software update could see 3D content transferred onto a 3D TV using the HDMI adaptor on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
The Nintendo Wii 2 will have just 8GB of storage according to the latest rumour doing the rounds. The successor to the Wii will fall well short of the 250GB hard-drive on the top Xbox 360 and the whopping 320GB hard-drive on the PS3, if that turns out to be true. The Nintendo Wii 2 will be unveiled at E3 next month.

White iPhone 4 thicker than black model reports claim Posted: 03 May 2011 09:03 AM PDT
Apple's repeatedly delayed white iPhone 4 lands with new issues Apple’s long awaited and now available white iPhone 4 has caused quite a stir since its overdue arrival last week with latest reports suggesting the white hued device is thicker than its black counterpart.
Whilst we here at T3 Towers have lined the two devices up and eyed them from every perceivable angle to see that maybe, perhaps, just possibly the new white device is a smidge thicker than a well worn black model, MacRumors has released an image that appears to show a noticeable difference between the two handsets.
One reason being suggested for the white iPhone 4’s slightly increased girth is additional layers of paint, a theory that would fall in line with the painting issues Apple had with the device that caused the lighter toned device to touch down ten months behind schedule.
Have you already snapped up a white iPhone 4 or are you no fussed by the revamped colour scheme of the now aging device? Share your views via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android apps on BlackBerry PlayBook detailed Posted: 03 May 2011 07:15 AM PDT
T3 reporting live from BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida. RIM has just revealed how Android apps will be downloadable from the BlackBerry App World for use on the company's 7-inch tablet, the PlayBook.
We've known for a while that the PlayBook would have some semblence of Android app compatability, but the ease with which they can be downloaded from BlackBerry's own app store will come as a huge boost to RIM fans.
Users will now get a "one store experience" with apps like IMDB and Gamefly looking great and appearing to fit very naturally on the PlayBook, during a demonstration at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida.
Apps will appear in the app tray, work right out of the box and and will not require a clunky emulator, just an Android Player.
Android developers will need to submit their applications to the App World in order to cross platforms. Exciting times.

Bing usurps Google maps and search on BlackBerry Posted: 03 May 2011 06:39 AM PDT
T3 reports live from BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a shock appearance at BlackBerry World to announce that Bing will be the default search and maps app for BlackBerry smartphones.
Bing Search and Maps will replace Google on all new BlackBerry devices as a deeply-integrated part of BlackBerry OS 7, and will first appear on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 handset announced yesterday.
"Effective today Bing will become the preferred search and maps application for BlackBerry," said a typically-excited Bal;mer after he was introduced by RIM President Mike Lazaridis. Ballmer says that Microsoft will be "investing uniquely" in Bing for BlackBerry.
“This goes way beyond a search box, it’s about finding real tools to help people get things done," he added.
BlackBerry owners will now be able to search Bing, even before unlocking the device, as it will appear in the device's lock bar. Searches will feature a social network-based link ranking system.
Bing for BlackBerry will also bring a host of location-centric services including location maps, allowing users to look inside buildings on the map. There'll also be a host of location-based deals, presumably from the likes of Groupon and Foursquare.
The announcement means that Google has been ousted as the default search and maps app for BlackBerry phone. With Bing also performing well on iPad and iPhone, and naturally the default client for WP7 phones, it looks like Google has a real battle on its hand in the mobile search market.

Royal wedding breaks online live streaming records Posted: 03 May 2011 04:32 AM PDT
Online stream reaches new heights thanks to Royal wedding demand Last Friday’s Royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton has broken online streaming records touting the largest ever live online audience, new reports have revealed.
Whilst finalised figures have yet to be revealed, the 400 million viewers Google was expecting to the watch the Royal wedding via the official YouTube feed alone was more than enough to topple the previous live streaming record held by President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009 which had an estimated 70 million online viewers.
The rocketing user interest in coverage of the Royal wedding caused a number of key online outlets to struggle to meet demand as the BBC website intermittently displayed an error message saying it was experiencing “abnormal traffic.”
A BBC spokesperson addressing the issues announced: We are experiencing some technical issues with BBC Online due to the sheer weight of traffic, which may cause the site to be slower than normal in some cases."
Were you one of the millions to watch the Royal wedding via online means or did you avoid the celebrations as best you could? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon Kindle tablet PC set for release later this year Posted: 03 May 2011 03:26 AM PDT
Will it run on Android or have its own bespoke OS? The Amazon Kindle is a market leading device and the eReader charged with reviving the market, but it can’t compete with similarly shaped devices (such as the iPad) on any front other than reading. That’s where an Amazon-branded tablet PC would come in - it’s been rumoured to ship in the second half of 2011.
The gossip comes from DigiTimes, who claims that a source close to LCD display manufacturer Quanta is expecting to produce the key components at a volume of around 700,000 units per month, as of H2 2011. The device is also rumoured to have a second touch-sensitive panel, which is being manufactured by E Ink Holdings.

Mac OS X Lion getting iOS style uninstalling Posted: 03 May 2011 03:01 AM PDT
Apple has said previously that OS X Lion will be influenced by iOS. Mac OS X Lion is edging ever closer to release. And as developers delves around its recesses, we’re starting to get a clearer idea of what to expect, including an uninstall mode taken straight from iOS.
Apps loaded up on your Mac from the Mac App Store will be able to be uninstalled by pressing and holding on their icon, with the screen going into “jiggle” mode, just like it does on the iPhone and iPad. You’ll then be able to tap the close button in the right hand corner to wipe it off of your system.
Apple has said before that OS X Lion will take its cue from iOS, as the two systems get closer in style and design. The Cupertino company has promised a summer release for its new desktop operating system.

Ice Cream Sandwich to be name of new Android OS Posted: 03 May 2011 02:58 AM PDT
Tasty new OS to bring tablet features to Android phones? A Google software engineer appears to have unveiled that the name of the next Android operating system will be Ice Cream Sandwich.
Romain Guy, the engineer in question gave the game away when responding to a Google Code issue for Android 3.0 Honeycomb on the Android project hub. Guy posted that, 'a bug fix will be provided in Ice Cream Sandwich.'
Continuing its dessert-based naming convention, Eric Schmidt had previously mentioned that the next update would start with the letter 'i' and Romain's revelation seems to confirm it.
There's no confirmation of whether this will be known as Android 3.1, or whether this will just be an update aimed at Android tablets. There is also every possiblity that Google could be planning to move over some of the functionality of 3.0 to smartphones.
So with 'i' now seemingly covered off by Google we anticipate a huge jelly outside Google HQ for the update to follow.

Bin Laden death reported live via social network Twitter Posted: 03 May 2011 02:48 AM PDT
Twitter touts breaking news credentials once again In the wake of Osama Bin Laden’s death it has emerged that an IT consultant in Abbottabad, Pakistan unwittingly broke the news of the US attacks on the former al-Qaeda head via social networking site Twitter.
Twitter user ReallyVirtual, also known as Sohaib Athar, tweeted remarks about a helicopter which he suggested might not be a Pakistani aircraft hovering overhead at 1am local time shortly before the fire fight that ending in the death of Bin Laden broke out.
Mr Arthar was not aware of the severity of the situation and exactly what events he had been commenting on until US President Barack Obama officially confirmed the death of Bin Laden later that day. His actions were dubbed by one American news outlet as Twitter’s “CNN moment.”
The killing of the terrorist blamed for the September 11th attacks on the Twin Towers in New York almost 10 years ago is the latest in a series of global news events to be broken via the social media outlet. Recently the crashing of a passenger plane in the Hudson River and the announcement of the Royal wedding were broken via the Facebook challenger.
Has the rise in social media on the move given a rise to citizen journalism and user participation in the reporting of news? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PSN outage: Sony denies credit card sales reports Posted: 03 May 2011 02:16 AM PDT
Announcement comes as SOE is also hit by major hack. Sony might now be fighting hackers on two fronts, with the loss of 24 million SOE gamers’ data. But it’s still trying to debunk myths about the PSN outage, being forced to deny that it was offered users’ credit card details in return for payment.
Sony’s Patrick Seybold took to the PlayStation blog to state, “One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list.”
He also said that stories about passwords not being encrypted properly were wide of the mark. “While the passwords that were stored were not ‘encrypted,’ they were transformed using a cryptographic hash function. There is a difference between these two types of security measures which is why we said the passwords had not been encrypted. But I want to be very clear that the passwords were not stored in our database in cleartext form.”
Sony has said it hopes to have some PSN services back up this week. But with SOE now down, it seems this story won’t be going anywhere for now. For more on the Sony hacks, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Nintendo Vitality Sensor delays detailed Posted: 03 May 2011 01:00 AM PDT
Will the Vitality Sensor ever hit shelves? Nintendo’s bizarre Vitality Sensor peripheral, which monitors gamers’ heart rate and stress levels, has been beset by delays since it was first outed at E3 2009. But now Nintendo has gone some way to explaining why the add-on has hit the skids.
Speaking on the official Nintendo website, Ninty boss Satoru Iwata said, "This is a totally new type of entertainment, and there are large individual differences in the biological information of humans. For example, if it was acceptable that only 80 per cent of the users thought the result was natural, then we could propose this to consumers right now. However, we are aiming for a level of quality in which 99 per cent of consumers feel comfortable, and that is why this project is taking time to complete."
However, Iwata wouldn’t be drawn on when the Vitality Sensor would be released, or exactly how it would be used when it does get releases. With the Wii 2 due to be detailed at E3 this summer, it seems likely this extra is one we’ll forever be holding out for.

iOS 4.3.3 location tracking update incoming Posted: 02 May 2011 11:45 PM PDT
No release date yet, but full update plans revealed. Apple is all set to release iOS 4.3.3, the update which will apparently fix the myriad location tracking bugs which led to such controversy last month. There’s no word on an exact release date, but the full details of the software boost have already emerged.
The guys at BGR have already snagged a copy of iOS 4.3.3 and have been told it will stop the iPhone’s location data being backed up to iTunes, delete the database when a phone’s location awareness is toggled off and also cut the size of the location database.
Those are some pretty hefty changes, especially considering Apple said last week that the only real bug came with the iPhone tracking data of users who had switched off location services. Steve Jobs denied Apple was tracking iPhone users, but it seems Cupertino is well aware of the bad feeling this has caused among its faithful punters.
BGR says iOS 4.3.3 should be out in the next fortnight. Tell us what you think of the update on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sony Online Entertainment hacked: millions more details stolen Posted: 02 May 2011 11:31 PM PDT
24.8 million users' details stolen, credit card information also at risk. Sony has confirmed that it has had details of 24.8 million gamers stolen from its Sony Online Entertainment MMO service, including some credit and debit information. As part of its investigation into the separate loss of 77 million users’ data from PSN, Sony says it discovered this latest “security breach”, taking the service down yesterday.
Despite only taking action yesterday, and confirming the breach in a statement last night, Sony says the attack happened on 16 and 17 April, the same time as PSN was hit by hackers.
Sony says the investigations of engineers and security specialists, “…showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007. The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.”
As with the PSN breach, Sony has confirmed that users’ name, date of birth, address, password, phone number, email address and gender have been compromised. Customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain could also have had their bank account number, account name and address exposed.
Sony said that it has moved as swiftly as it possibly could in shutting down and informing SOE customers about this latest breach, but punters will once again be asking why it took so long to detect such a massive security failure. Tech Today: Apple iOS 4.3.3, BlackBerry Bold 9900 Posted: 02 May 2011 10:19 PM PDT
Bank Holiday Monday's biggest tech news. Smartphone giant RIM has announced the handset many of its loyalists have been waiting for. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 sees the candybar Bold boast a touchscreen for the first time. T3 got a hands-on first look at the device today and it may be the most impressive RIM has offered in quite some time.
Sony has exposed its PlayStation Network account holders to years at risk from identity theft according to security experts. The company, which hopes to have its online gaming portal back online this week after a hack compromised the data of millions of gamers, has sacrificed the names, addresses and mother's maiden names of up to 100 million people according to an article on Business Week.
Twitter has finally acquired Tweetdeck for between $40-50 million according to sources familiar with the talks. Tweetdeck will now be an official Twitter app. Twitter grabbed the London-based social networking platform from under the noses of UberMedia who had previously bid less for the popular third party app. Let's see what Twitter does with Tweetdeck in the immediate future
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apple's fix for the location-tracking bug which sparked controversy last week will arrive sooner rather than later, according to reports on Monday. The initial build for iOS Software Update 4.3.3 was handed in on Monday with the release set to be rolled out within two weeks. Despite widespread cynicism, Apple is adamant that the amount of location data iOS stores is just an oversight.
Wikipedia founder Julian Assange has been off the radar for a little while, but has returned to the limelight to take aim at social networking giant Facebook. In an interview with Russia Today the demonised exposé master says "Facebook in particular is the most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented. Here we have the worlds most comprehensive database about people, their relationships, their names, their addresses, their location their communication with each other, their relatives...all accessible to US intelligence."
