Tech Today: Anonymous Sony hack denial, iPod nano rival Posted: 05 May 2011 01:30 PM PDT
The tech news that broke after you logged-off Google Earth for Android has been updated to suit Android Honeycomb tablets, Google revealed on Thursday. The app has been optimised for Android 3.0 tablets like the Motorola Xoom, with Google claiming the new experience is like upgrading from TV to iPad.
The Apple iPod nano has a new watch-face-sized rival with the Creative Zen M300 PMP. The device costs about half as much as the 16GB iPod nano and includes Bluetooth connectivity for use with wireless headphones and the opportunity to upgrade the onboard memory with a micro SD card slot. It only costs £80 too.
The Sony PSN hack blame game continues. Earlier on Thursday, Sony had once again pointed the finger at online activists Anonymous, before the group shot back with a statement saying it wasn't interested in credit card fraud, only bringing criminals to justice. Hacks to Sony's online portfolio is believed to have compromised the personal data of up to 100 million users.
The launch of a mobile BlackBerry Playbook tablet has been delayed indefinitely in another blow to the heavily criticised RIM tablet. So far the device is yet to launch in the UK, with a Wi-Fi only device on sale in the US. The mobile data enabled PlayBook was scheduled for a launch ont he Sprint network next Sunday.

News@8pm: Modern Warfare 3 release and iPad 3 goes 3D Posted: 05 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. After months of speculation, T3 finally got it's hands on the BlackBerry PlayBook, a month before it lands in the UK. But is there enough in the offering to lure business customers away from the mighty iPad 2? Read T3's comprehensive review here and decide for yourself. We'd hardly had a chance to swipe across the screen before rumours started flying around about its successor. Apparently, a 10 inch product is in the offing before year end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was another big day for fans of Call of Duty, with an official announcement coming about Modern Warfare 3, possibly in as soon as a week. Fans of the popular WipEout series are also anticipating news, with several factors pointing to new games on both the PS3 and NGP.
It wouldn't be a day of tech news if there wasn't a story or two about the iPhone 5. Today's rumour focuses around wireless syncing, with reports pointing to the next generation device utilising over the air downloads in a similar way to how Android devices update themselves. The rumour comes as Apple releases iOS 4.3.3, aimed at fixing bugs relating to location tracking, following a string of reports about the iPhone’s ability to store a users’ previous locations.
With many shops still out of stock following the release of the hugely popular iPad 2, talk of a third generation device is already rife across internet forums. And the latest morsel has certainly piqued our interest, with the iPad 3 possibly featuring a 3D screen. Excited? We certainly are. Elsewhere in iPad news The Daily, a newspaper specifically tailored to the device has posted $10 million first quarter losses following its official unveiling and release earlier this year. These losses join a $30 million expenditure the project incurred in developing the concept prior to launch and total a near $100,000 loss per each of the tablet publication’s daily editions. iPad app news: Telegraph launches subscription app Posted: 05 May 2011 10:27 AM PDT
Pricey digital version of the paper available now. The Daily Telegraph has followed rival paper The Times onto the iPad by offering a paid-for subsciption service to a digital version of the newspaper.
Telegraph for iPad is free to download from the App Store, but if you buy the paper on a daily basis, it'll cost you £1.19 per issue, or a much more reasonable £9.99 for a monthly sub. Those who still subscribe to the paper edition will get the iPad content free of charge.
The previous version of the Telegraph app, launched in September 2010, had offered free ad-supported access to the content and the new price for the same content has not been met well by users commenting on iTunes.
The new version of the app brings multimedia content with videos and galleries, interactive crosswords and the paper's famous cartoonists and, by the looks of the video preview on the Telegraph's website, a really intuitive UI.
The Telegraph iPad edition will be available to download each morning at 5am and then available to read offline. Readers will also be able to access a 30-day digital archive of previous editions. Ex-pats will be happy to know that the Telegraph iPad edition is also available internationally.

Sir James Dyson expresses concern over British tech Posted: 05 May 2011 06:54 AM PDT
British inventor shares concerns over the future of nation's industry British inventor and vacuum cleaner behemoth Sir James Dyson has revealed he fears for the future of British engineering claiming the UK’s current trend is to be too conservative.
Speaking with gadget blog Tech Radar Dyson declared “We must take more risks,” moving on to add: "When it comes to technology we should be bold in ambition and clear in terms of opportunity - thinking twenty years ahead.”
"The pace of change is faster than ever but the potential is enormous. We have missed out on engineering high speed trains which will travel on British tracks and have not yet decided what direction we go in with renewable energy. "We're behind, and we need quick and bold decisions to give us a competitive edge. Dyson engineers are perfecting technology that won't see the light of day for ten years; it may never see the light of day.”
Keen to stress that there is more to creating a truly great product than that single light bulb moments, and urging the UK’s minds to push forward Dyson concluded: "There is not one 'spark' for invention - ideas need to be developed to be turned into commercial successes. And we have to start now."

Paper-thin smartphone developed in the US Posted: 05 May 2011 04:32 AM PDT
A new paper thin smartphone is said to be the shape of things to come Ever felt that your treasured iPhone or HTC is just too fat for your pocket? No, us neither, but researchers in America are set on convincing us that thin is the way forward with the world's first paper-thin phone being unveiled on later this month by researchers from Arizona State University, Queen’s University, and Amazon Kindle 2 creators E Ink Corporation.
Albeit still in the concept stage, the so called 'flexible iPhone' does everything a smartphone can, allowing the user the read books, play music, or make calls, however, being as thin as a piece of paper, the phone redefines the user experience, making pinching and swiping a screen so last year.
“This computer looks, feels and operates like a small sheet of interactive paper. You interact with it by bending it into a cell phone, flipping the corner to turn pages, or writing on it with a pen.”
The device will be unveiled officially on May 10 at the Association of Computing Machinery’s CHI 2011 (Computer Human Interaction) conference in Vancouver.

Apple iOS 5 to be available via over-the-air download Posted: 05 May 2011 03:57 AM PDT
Next-gen iOS update to do away with cabled syncing Apple is to do away with compulsory iTunes syncing for the upcoming iOS 5 update allowing instead for over-the-air downloads of the new mobile operating system, new reports have suggested.
Just hours after iOS 4.3.3 was made available to download via iTunes, rumours have surfaced suggesting iOS 5 will allow users to update the mobile OS on their iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices over-the-air, utilising the wireless download tech for all subsequent OS releases.
iOS 5 is expected to launch alongside the mooted iPhone 5, a device that is widely expected to follow Apple’s annual product cycles and touch down at WWDC next month. Numerous reports, however, have suggested the iPhone 5 will be delayed, not landing until September.

The Daily records $10 million first quarter losses Posted: 05 May 2011 03:13 AM PDT
The Daily racks up $10 million Q1 loss despite 800,000 downloads Following its official unveiling and release earlier this year, The Daily, the iPad newspaper collaboration between Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp and Apple has recorded first quarter losses toping $10 million (£6 million).
A hefty loss for its opening three months, The Daily’s first quarter loses join a $30 million expenditure the project incurred in developing the concept prior to launch and total a near $100,000 loss per each of the tablet publication’s daily editions.
Currently available exclusively on the iPad with Android Honeycomb tablet compatibility planned for the near future, The Daily has recorded more than 800,000 edition downloads since launch. Despite these seemingly impressive uptake figures it is currently unknown what proportion of these are made up of the publication’s two week free trial and how many users remained loyal to The Daily once the charges began.
Landing in February The Daily faced a series of delays prior to its arrival eventually touching down with an update to Apple’s App Store services that allowed for the inclusion of in-app subscriptions, a service now fully utilised by T3’s own iPad app.

Sony Walkman Music Clip official Posted: 05 May 2011 03:01 AM PDT
2GB and 4GB models of small-time Walkman. Sony has just come over all official with its new Sony Walkman Clip. Undoubtedly going after the iPod shuffle, this new dinky MP3 player still manages to pack some smart features into its tiny frame.
Tipping the scales at just 28g and measuring under 10cm long, it has a detachable clip so you can wear it out running or down the gym. It has so-called Zappin tech for finding the tracks you want, letting you play a short clip of a track before choosing to listen to the whole thing.
There’s 18 hours of battery life, with a quick charge function delivering 90 minutes of tunes after just three minutes of the Walkman Clip being hooked up to the mains. There’s only support for MP3 and WMA files though, so don’t go thinking you can load up your DRM-free AAC tracks from iTunes.
There are 2GB and 4GB models up for grabs. The Walkman Clip goes on sale mid-May. Let us know what you think of Sony’s latest effort on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
BlackBerry PlayBook: 10-inch version incoming? Posted: 05 May 2011 02:18 AM PDT
Report suggests next-gen PlayBook will land with extensive software update. The BlackBerry PlayBook has barely been on US shelves a month, but already attention is turning to its successor. Or rather, its new stablemate. See, the rumour mill reckons there’ll be a BlackBerry PlayBook 10-inch out by the end of the year, to go alongside the current 7-inch model.
BGR says it’s got the inside line from a string of sources about the new tab. The screen size is the big selling point here, playing up to Steve Jobs’ claim that 7-inch slates are “tweeners” that would be “dead on arrival.”
It’s hoped the new version of the PlayBook will land alongside a software update that brings native email and BBM, features which are distinctly missing from the current version.
The PlayBook has been the star of the show at this week’s BlackBerry World in Florida. We’ve been going hands-on with RIM’s iPad-botherer, as well as its new BlackBerry Bold Touch smartphone. iPad 3: Apple plotting 3D skill Posted: 05 May 2011 01:01 AM PDT
Will Apple follows LG's suit and bring 3D skills to its next iPad? iPad 3 rumours are already beginning to gather pace. And the latest morsel has certainly piqued our interest. RCR Wireless is reporting that it’s spoken with numerous sources who say Apple is planning on loading up 3D viewing smarts onto it’s next-gen slate.
The gossip comes from ‘a Hollywood insider’, who said, “The fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert.” What’s more, they reckon studios in LA are rushing to get content ready for the slate’s release, which some say will be later this year.
This rumour has apparently been backed up by a number of staffers at Foxconn, Apple’s main Far East manufacturer, who have spoken with RCR’s ‘close industry sources’.
Of course, LG’s already released a 3D packing smartphone, so such an idea isn’t so far fetched. But with the Nintendo 3DS struggling to do the numbers, would Apple really be willing to bet the farm on adding three dimensional savviness to its best-selling tablet? Posted: 04 May 2011 11:39 PM PDT
Release comes just days after plans for software boost were leaked. Apple has released its latest software update for the iPhone and iPad, iOS 4.3.3. The iterative boost is aimed at fixing bugs relating to location tracking, following a string of reports about the iPhone’s ability to store a users’ previous locations.
On its official website, Apple said, “This update contains changes to the iOS crowd-sourced location database cache including: reduces the size of the cache; no longer backs the cache up to iTunes; deletes the cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.”
While Steve Jobs said in an interview last week that the latter was the only bug that needed fixing, it seems the update as a whole addresses wider concerns about so-called location tracking. Apple appears to be responding to users’ concerns following the recent row by limiting the amount of data it takes.
Have you installed iOS 4.3.3. How’s it working out for you? Tell us now in our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
PSN outage: Sony implicates Anonymous Posted: 04 May 2011 11:28 PM PDT
Open letter to US Congress from Kaz Hirai blames Anonymous for attacks. Anonymous, the hacking collective which famously hit Amazon and a string of other major online presences last year, has been implicated in the current PSN outage by Sony. Just last month, Anonymous claimed it had nothing to do with Sony’s PSN problems.
In an open letter to US Congress, responding to a series of questions asked by the Washington-based legislature, Sony’s Kaz Hirai said, “We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named ‘Anonymous’ with the words ‘We are Legion.’”
In addition to this latest news, Sony also said it was confident that the loss of credit card details had not resulted in any fraud. Hirai said, “As of today, the major credit card companies have not reported any fraudulent transactions that they believe are the direct result of this cyber attack.”
Sony has still not brought back PSN or its SOE service, the latter having been taken down earlier this week following a separate attack on 16 and 17 April. Either way, it seems Sony is finally starting to get to the bottom of who’s behind one the biggest hacks ever seen.

Tech Today: OTA iOS software updates, Wii price cut Posted: 04 May 2011 09:00 PM PDT
It's the tech news that broke after you logged-off The Nintendo Wii price has fallen again in the United States, with the motion sensing console now available for just $149 with a copy of Mario Kart and a steering wheel. That works out at about £90. Nintendo is obviously trying to rid themselves of the original console before the Wii 2 arrives next year, but that's still some bargain.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apple is planning to launch Mac OS X Lion via the Mac App Store say reports from Apple Insider. The new version of its laptop and desktop software may be available to download, without an install disk, directly from the Mac App Store according to those familiar with the matter.
Intel has unveiled a new 3D chip design that will enable more processing power to be crammed into even smaller spaces, while costing less and also consuming less juice, the company has said. The newly designed chips, which feature tri-gate tech that Intel has been working on since 2002, will show up in computers, phones and tablets later in 2011.
In yet more Apple news, reports suggest the next version of iOS might feature over-the-air software updates, meaning the days of plugging in your iOS device to your computer to get the latest version would come to an end. Apple is said to have been negotiating the deal with US carriers according to the reports.
