| OnLive UK release confirmed for Autumn 2011 Posted: 02 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT
After a year of faultless running in the US, Onlive Gaming Service is finally heading to Blighty OnLive, the cloud-based gaming service, has announced it will be opening its doors for UK reservations on the first day of E3 2011. By heading over to onlive.co.uk on June 7th, UK customers will have the opportunity to reserve an OnLive Player Tag in preparation for the Autumn launch.
The cloud-based gaming service has currently been fully operating in the States for a year now in which customers, either through the OnLive Game System for TVs or through an app for PCs/Macs can play modern titles at full HD resolution through an internet connection.
On top of this OnLive has confirmed signed deals with HTC and VIZIO to bring the service to tablets and smartphones such as the HTC Flyer. In the same vein of compatability the company revealed that the service would be supported by all Intel powered electronics from TVs to Blu-ray players.
Along with these huge announcements OnLive has said that the service will have full Facebook integration by the time it reaches the UK, making it even easier to belittle and boast to your fellow gamers through the social networking service.
UK pricing and official release dates have not yet been revealed, but rest assured, when onlive.co.uk goes live at E3 2011 on June 7, we'll be there to give you the low down.

| OnLive on the iPad currently in the pipeline Posted: 02 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT
'Real' gaming on the way for the Apple tablet OnLive, the cloud based gaming service looks set to get compatibility with the iPad bringing a whole new gaming dimension to the Apple tablet.
Having now received an official OnLive UK release date, it has been revealed to T3 that the new gaming platform is eyeing up the iPad as one of many internet-enabled devices being investigated for use with the Universal Wireless Controller also announced today.
Currently there is an OnLive iPad Viewer app that let's you watch games being played, but by using the Universal Wireless Controller that connects via a USB dongle or a wireless link, it will enable iPad owners to play top titles right on their tablets.
OnLive and the Universal Wireless Controller will be demonstrated on an Android tablet which will be the HTC Flyer at E3 2011 next week and T3 will be there to make sure you get a first glimpse at it and find out when it's coming to the iPad.

| OnLive Wireless Gaming Controller set for E3 2011 unveiling Posted: 02 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT
As if they weren't smug enough with a year's smooth-running, OnLive now reveals its vision of mobile-gaming. OnLive, the cloud-based gaming service will be unveiling its new OnLive Wireless Gaming Controller at the E3 2011 gaming expo in a few days time with demonstrations on compatible devices.
OnLive has designed the controller to work with almost anything, from a HDTV to a HTC Flyer Android tablet. Using either a USB dongle or a wireless link the controller is designed to meet the requirements of gamers who are perhaps using OnLive on their PCs or Macs or even tablets and smartphones.
It's purpose is essentially to be the main controller for all devices that won't require the MicroConsole (although you can of course use it with that as well). In total the plan is to allow up to four controllers to connect with one USB dongle, whether it's through a laptop or Blu-ray player. So, as long as it's OnLive compatible, it'll work.
There's no pricing details as yet, but T3 will keep you posted when we know more.
Is this the next step in making gaming truly portable? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

| News@8pm: Kal-El superchip looks to alter gaming and Windows 8 details revealed Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. HP head honcho Leo Apotheker has revealed the company will be open to licensing out webOS to other smart phone manufacturers, claiming the system is too good not to share. Elsewhere Skype has played it safe with its HD service, promising customers it’ll work, providing they have forked out for Skype certified webcams with a built in CPU.

NVIDIA has released a video demo-ing the capabilities of its new Kal-El superchip, which looks set to take tablet gaming to another level. Products containing the chip should be surfacing August this year. In other gaming news; Forza Motorsport 4 will have Kinect integration after a video was released previewing a ‘head-tracking’ feature on the Xbox 360 title.
Details of Microsoft’s Windows 8 OS were revealed at this years D9 event. Taking cues from the Windows 7 phone, the system is set to be seen on tablets and top-end PCs at the beginning of next year, and rumours have already been kick started as to who the first developers to use the system will be. A Microsoft video on the building of Windows 8 blurs out a range of tablet-esque designs in the background, thought to be by HP.
More details surfaced about Twitter’s soon-to-be launched photo service . It will be ran in partnership with Photobucket, and will allow users to upload pictures and video to the social networking site, and share via hashtag. Finally, Nokia’s CEO has labelled takeover claims as ‘baseless’, rumours of a Microsoft takeover had started after the companies share prices tumbled earlier this week. | Android app news: TuneWiki Lyric Legend arrives Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:22 AM PDT
It's like Guitar Hero but for the lyrics Popular lyric-guessing game Lyric Legend from TuneWiki has arrived in Beta on the Android Market, following a successful stint on the iOS App Store.
The game, which is free to download, is pretty much a cross-pollination of the Guitar Hero games and that awful-but-strangely-addictive-even-though-Shane-Richie-is-involved gameshow 'Don't Forget The Lyrics.'
The idea is to listen along to the song and hit the correct word bubbles that correspond with the lyrics. When there are no lyrics you tap along to the cascading beat bubbles. Sounds easy, is hard, still pretty fun.
You get a few songs with the nicely-designed application, but in order to get the best out of this game, you'll need to purchase some more well-known songs from within the app. Songs aren't cheap at 99c each, but you can earn them through kicking butt and earning gold stars in the game.
Lyric Legend has garnered an impressive 1.8m downloads on the App Store and we expect the Android version to do equally well. At 24MB it's a pretty sizable download, but represents the potential for a few hours of lyric-learning fun.

| Apple tops nominations for T3 Gadget Awards Posted: 02 Jun 2011 09:33 AM PDT
Apple has casually shrug off 'Antennagate' and managed to come out fighting, wiping the floor of our nominations. Apple has made its position clearly known with 20 nominations in 13 catagories, making it the most highly nominated brand.
While the list has included two of their latest products the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4, the company has also been gaining favour in more traditional areas such as their desktops and laptops.
The MacBook Air has with no shock at all made its way into the T3 Design Award list while still being able to rub shoulders with the iMac in the Computer of the Year Award.
Of course what must be the biggest revelation was Apple's iPad 2, thinner than thin and able to waltz into both the Tablet of the Year Award and T3 Design Award. Apple's also managed to nab some kudos for its innovative side with the Smart Cover being nominated for Gadget Accessory of the Year.

| Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to get wave of new titles Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:46 AM PDT
Despite fairly standard sales, Sony Ericsson has remained quietly confident, now it has some ammo to back it up Sony Ericssson has announced that it will be showcasing over 20 new titles for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, among those will be some fan favourites and 10 exclusives.
Included in this list will be the Gameloft porting of Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard which will be making a rebirth on the Android powered phone after having already appeared on other mobile devices.
In a slightly more unexpected move, the cult-hit Minecraft will also be making it's way to the device. The game which originally started with a small following has boomed and now has over 8 million registered users that have fallen for its retro charm. This will be the first time the game has moved onto a mobile device and Sony Ericsson will no doubt be hoping this will be their secret weapon.
Finally alongside these Android exclusives will be a range of PSone titles which have been adapted for the gaming phone, these will making their debut alongside the other games on the Sony Ericsson stand at E3.
Has this influx of new modern titles made you think again about the Sony Ericssson Xperia Play? Let us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter.

| HP could license out webOS to other manufacturers Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:31 AM PDT
Company wouldn't rule out a deal with HTC. HP CEO Leo Apotheker has stated that he would entertain the idea of licensing WebOS to other manufacturers.
With version 3.0 of the system already set to launch on the Pre 3 phone, and HP’s TouchPad tablet, Apotheker revealed he would be open to allowing other companies, including HTC, to use it as well, stating:
"I happen to believe that WebOS is a uniquely outstanding operating system. It's not correct to believe that it should only be on HP devices."
Apotheker also spoke of the integration of WebOS into consumer products beyond smartphones, saying appliances could be networked together and use WebOS to communicate with each other and for user interaction.
Although most contracts will surely be tied up in businesses, Apotheker’s words have clearly opened the door for other manufacturers to come in and negotiate the use of WebOS as a platform. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
| Nokia CEO calls takeover claim 'baseless' Posted: 02 Jun 2011 06:21 AM PDT
Ironically after the heavy drop in shares, this rumour had momentarily made them rise again. Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop has called the claims that Microsoft was thinking of buying out Nokia as completely 'baseless'.
The Espoo boss was talking at the D9 conference with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and both were clear to highlight the strength of their new found relationship, clearly a move to try and calm investors who have grave predictions for the company.
The cause of all these concerns came after Nokia announced that there was a high risk the company wouldn't break even this quarter. With the company's costly and gradual transition to Windows Phone 7 this news was hardly a surprise, however the reaction by investors certainly seemed to come as a shock to the company chiefs.
Was Nokia moving to Windows Phone 7 the right move, or should they have invested more in Symbian or MeeGo? Join the debate at Facebook and Twitter. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
| Apple iPad and iPhone 'connected' on Orange Posted: 02 Jun 2011 04:26 AM PDT
Realising that having two plans; one for tablet, one for phone can be a chore, Orange has the solution. Orange has announced the first Apple iPad/iPhone 'connected' plan which allows you to have a iPad 2 3G and iPhone 4 all under the same contract.
The 24 month contract costs £65 per month, but for that you get 2GB of data allowance, shareable over both devices, unlimited access to BT Openzone WiFi and 600mins and unlimited texts for your shiny iPhone 4.
While the price is fairly spot on with having two seperate contracts, Orange is hoping its main selling point will be the ease of use in having just one contract. By sharing the data between both products, it's effectively letting you choose how you use your data.
Has this new plan convinced you to go all out with Apple's twosome or is the price too high? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

| Skype only certifies CPU webcams for HD calling Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:42 AM PDT
Skype has decided to keep it safe, promising customers HD chats but only if they pay a premium. Skype is refusing to certify webcams that do not have their own CPU's built in for it's Skype HD video calling which offers 720p resolution. That doesn't mean non-certified webcams won't work, just that Skype isn't saying by any means that they will.
One example is the Creative Live! inPerson HD which handily has it's own CPU built in allowing it to process the images on a laptop that normally wouldn't have been able to cope. It's a clever idea but does come at a premium, the inPerson HD costs a cool £109.99.
Of course once you have a HD webcam all of this is then reliant on how good your internet connection is. In essence this is Skype covering all the bases making sure their HD service is exactly and only what they're promising.
Is Skype HD worth the webcam premium or is it just too much hassle? Let us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter.

| Nvidia Kal-El quad-core hands-on revealed Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:28 AM PDT
New NVIDIA chip aims to leap frog Apple in next-gen market. NVIDIA has shown that its new SoC, dubbed Kal-El, is set to take next-gen tablet gaming to a whole new level, after the unveiling of a ‘Glowball’ game video.
The impressive video shows the systems ability to emulate dynamic lighting and real time physics, thanks to the 12-core NVIDIA GPU and four 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 cores that have been rammed onto the chip.
The first products to contain Kal-El are due to be out this August, with rumours suggesting that Motorola’s Xoom 2 is the most likely candidate, with smartphone releases thought to arrive in 2012.
It seems highly doubtful that Apple’s A5 processor will be able to match Kal-Els graphic qualities, and with NVIDIA claiming that they expect a 25-30% rise in performance by the time products reach production, if developers come flocking they may really be able to get a jump on Apple.
Check the awesome power of the system for yourself in the video below.

| Twitter launches photo sharing service Posted: 02 Jun 2011 02:58 AM PDT
It seems that Twitter is getting twitchy over its dominance, first TweetDeck, now Photobucket. Twitter will soon launch its own official photo service direct from Twitter.com enabling tweeters to upload pictures, videos and then use the improved search engine to see what's been happening via a hashtag.
It's a neat idea, working on the same principle that Flipboard operates, the search engine gives you the ability to upload a picture of, for example, an event, hashtag that event then see who else has uploaded pictures.
The upload service itself is in partnership with Photobucket, and while it may not be the expected yfrog or Twitpic, the company certainly has experience in handling photo-uploading.
In essence it's a move that's aimed at bringing everything together, presumably making it easier for us, the customer, but it's also sure to scare third-party developers who will no doubt feel Twitter is moving towards being more isolated.

Expect to see new OS on slates and PCs from next year. Microsoft has given a sneak peek of Windows 8 at this year's D9 event in the States. And if the one officially released screengrab is anything to go by, the new OS is going to be something completely different.
Taking its cue from Windows Phone 7, the new Start screen, pictured here, shows open apps as tiles which can be prodded or clicked on easily. All programmes can be seen as tiles, with the grab also suggesting that emails can be pinned to the Start screen, exactly the same as with Windows Phone.
There are set to be stacks of HTML5 and Java-based widgets and apps, with Internet Explorer 10 set to host these add-ons in a stunning fullscreen mode. As you can tell, the Big M wants Windows 8 to be as tablet-focused as possible.
Windows 8 is expected to be released next year, with tablets and top-end PCs feeling the love. Already it looks as if this will be a huge step up from Windows 7, giving Android and iOS plenty to think about when it comes to slates. What do you make of Windows 8? tell us what you think now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

| Gmail accounts hit by Chinese hackers Posted: 02 Jun 2011 01:19 AM PDT
US officials also have Gmail accounts attacked. Google has said that the email accounts of US government officials and Chinese political dissidents have been targeted by hackers based in Jinan, China. The Big G says it discovered plans by hackers to steal passwords and monitor emails.
The attack was apparently part of a 'spear phishing' scam, which convinces users they are logging into their Gmail account when in fact they are heading over login and password details to hackers. While it's unclear exactly who is behind the attacks, the complexity of them has led to fears that the Chinese government is involved in some way.
The saga is set to increase tensions at a time when the US government has decided to classify cyber-attacks as acts of war. Google's China operation has been at the centre of controversy ever since it launched, the Mountain View company almost leaving China completely over the issue of censorship.
Google's report on the hacks says they could have been going on since February this year. In an official statement, the search giant said, "Google detected and has disrupted this campaign to take users' passwords and monitor their emails. We have notified victims and secured their accounts. In addition, we have notified relevant government authorities. We believe that this campaign to steal users' passwords originated from Jinan, China. We can't say for sure who is responsible."

| iCloud free for Mac OS X Lion users? Posted: 01 Jun 2011 11:52 PM PDT
Certain parts of iCloud expected to be free at launch, music streaming not included. Apple is looking to offer its new iCloud service for free to those who upgrade to its next gen OS X Lion software, or buy a new Mac with the operating system baked in. That's according to, "...people familiar with Apple's plans," who have dished the dirt to AppleInsider.
Word is that those who decide to stick with Snow Leopard, and Windows 7 users, will have to pay for the cloud storage solution. But Apple reckons that free access to iCloud will help it shift millions of copies of its new-look OS. Apparently it will be cheap in order to get more people to upgrade.
While this freebie is welcome, the insiders say that it will only apply to certain aspects of iCloud. That means the music streaming section is unlikely to be free, unsurprising seeing as the record labels will want their slice of the pie.
Will free iCloud be enough to tempt you to upgrade to Lion or even switch to Mac? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
