News@8PM: iPhone 5 and iPad 3 to land in September? Posted: 01 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Production has reportedly begun on Apple's iPhone 5 as it will supposedly match the iPad 3 release date in September. This news comes on the day that Apple's App store has reached a landmark 100,000 native iPad apps, displaying the popularity of the tablets since their release in April of last year. Apple was not the only one to reach a landmark today, as Twitter reportedly now handles more than 200 million tweets every day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There has also been an influx of smartphone news today, as details of new phones from Samsung and HTC emerged. The Windows Phone 7 HTC Eternity has leaked online and looks to be entering the top end of the market. Meanwhile photos of the Samsung Galaxy Z have been unveiled, though there is no indication of when the phone may be arriving in the UK. Another phone that may not arrive in the UK is the Nokia N9, as it was discovered that the UK was not listed on the availability section of the N9's website.
Video calling is arriving in force as the upcoming Skype update will bring free video calls to a number of Android 2.0 handsets. It has been confirmed by Sony that the PS Vita will also support video calling along with facial recognition software.
Finally, following yesterdays news surrounding Google+, it appears Google are lining up a design revamp for Google Mail and Calendar. These services will be redesigned with the same ethos as Google+, in an attempt to make the interface less cluttered. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
iPhone 5 and iPad 3 release date nears as production begins Posted: 01 Jul 2011 08:32 AM PDT
The Apple iPhone 5 release date looks set to be just a few short months away - possibly being released on the same day as the iPad 3 - with Taiwanese suppliers already reportedly manufacturing parts for both devices
iPhone 5 and iPad 3 component suppliers in Taiwan have begun producing parts for the upcoming Apple devices ahead of an autumn release date, new reports suggest.
Foxconn, the company behind the overall assembly of Apple’s handheld devices, as well as a number of smaller component suppliers responsible for the likes of the units’ cameras, batteries and chassis, are all reported by tech blog Digitimes to have ramped up production ahead of a large order from the consumer electronics giant.
While there have been few reports of what new features any iPad 3 tablet will boast, the iPhone 5 has been a hot topic on the rumour mill for some months. It is believed the device will come complete with an A5 1GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities and a larger, 720p HD display. And in may last year, the rumour mill went into overdrive after Apple iPhone 5 photos were reportedly leaked online. We don't know about you but T3 cannot wait to get our hands on one!
What features would you like to see Apple pack into its upcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 3 devices? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Twitter now handles more than 200 million Tweets a day Posted: 01 Jul 2011 07:34 AM PDT
Twitter hits latest milestone, recording more than 200 million Tweets a day - that's 1.5 billion Tweets per week!
Twitter has announced its latest milestone moment revealing earlier this week that it now handles more than 200 million separate tweets per day, almost 1.5 billion a week.
Founded in 2006, Twitter has seen adoption of its micro-blogging service soar over the past 12 months with the latest 200 million tweets a day figure eclipsing the 65 million tweets the company was handling on a daily basis at the same last year and the two million daily tweets being sent in January of 2009 - the same year it was rumoured to considering a buyout from Apple.
And much like Mark Zuckerberg's creation, the microblogging site has not been shy developing its business by spending some of its hard-earned advertising cash - and this year spent a whopping $40m on a Tweetdeck buyout.
Although Facebook recently announced that it had surpassed the 750 million active user mark, figures from ComScore have suggested Twitter attracted 139 million unique users in May of this year taking the microblogging site past MySpace in terms of global traffic.
Can Twitter catch Facebook in the social media market or is Google’s new service the next big thing? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Little else is currently known about the Nintendo DS-styled Sony S2 tablet with Sony having yet to reveal full specifications or confirmed release details. RIM employee resigns, writes a damning open letter Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:57 AM PDT
What do you do when you leave a company? If you work for RIM, you write a letter slating the company's BlackBerry smartphone efforts and leak it online. It’s the dream of many to leave your place of work in a blaze of glory – going out by telling everyone exactly what you think. That’s exactly what one supposedly high-ranking RIM employee has done, writing a damning resignation letter to the BlackBerry maker that doesn’t pull any punches.

Mobile payments users will reach 2.5 billion by 2015 Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:10 AM PDT
With Premium SMS and ticketing already on the rise, NFC is just one more catalyst in making sure we reach for our phones, not our wallets. Tech research analysts Juniper Research have revealed figures predicting that by 2015, the number of people using mobile payment services will have risen by 40% to 2.5 billion.
This staggering number is in part down to an increase in Premium SMS and transport ticketing services which allow us to buy train and plane tickets on our mobiles and then use the devices as a digital ticket.
Combine that with the growing number of NFC-enabled handsets which allow contactless payment and those figures suddenly start to make more sense.
It is, however, not without its risks, with Juniper also warning that while growth is positve, we could also see an increase in fraud levels, highlighting the need for serious changes in how our mobiles are kept secure.
Does contactless payment appeal to you, or are cards and cash more than enough? Join the debate at Facebook and Twitter.

PS Vita video calling to use facial recognition Posted: 01 Jul 2011 01:44 AM PDT
Although in the early stages, Sony has outed a cool new feature which will be arriving with the PS Vita. Sony has outed a video showcasing its facial recognition software which will eventually be used for video calling on the new Sony PS Vita handheld gaming platform.
The technology will be used in conjunction with avatars, allowing your avatar to accurately mimic head/mouth movement and blinking, although that last one may need some work.
It's in the early stages but from what we've seen of the video (see below), it looks very promising, with the technology potentially offering a fun new alternative to video calling while also being more than simply a gimmick.
What do you think, is this just a gimmick or could you see yourself having hours of fun using Sony's new alternative to video calling? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Samsung Galaxy Z new pics revealed Posted: 01 Jul 2011 12:58 AM PDT
New pictures have emerged of the Samsung Galaxy Z, a smaller version of the Korean corporation's Galaxy S2, which gave the Apple iPhone a run for its money following its April release date
New pictures have been revealed of the Samsung Galaxy Z, Samsung's smaller incarnation of the iPhone-bashing Samsung Galaxy S2.
Of course when we say smaller incarnation, the Samsung Galaxy Z still boasts two 1GHz processors powered by Tegra 2 and a 5MP camera with the ability to shoot 720p video.
It's a looker as well, with a few design tweaks giving it a decidedly more premium feel than arguably even the mighty Galaxy S 2, however don't expect it to have the same eye popping screen, with only a 4.2 inch WXGA resolution panel.
That said, it is running Android 2.3 and has 8GB of storage built-in to make sure you'll never run out of space when shooting HD video to your hearts content.
The handset is available for pre-order in Sweden on a £30 per month contract but there's still no word on whether the Galaxy Z will be hitting our shores at any point. Whatever the case, we just want to get our hands on one!
Does the Samsung Galaxy Z appeal, or are the specs just not up to scratch? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Nokia N9 will not get UK release? Posted: 01 Jul 2011 12:18 AM PDT
Just a week after finally unveiling the brilliant N9, Nokia could be keeping Europe out of the loop. Nokia could well be holding back its release of the Nokia N9 MeeGo smartphone to Europe, possibly permanently, instead focusing on Windows Phone 7.
This has come about after it was discovered that the UK, and other major European countries were not listed on the availability section of the N9's website.
Instead it appears as though the N9 will be heading to the Pacific with New Zealand, Malaysia and Australia all being listed, suggesting a very targeted approach for its release.
Coming just days after the leak of several new Symbian phones, it seems odd that Nokia would hold back on a product that has, so far, received very positive feedback from not only Europe but around the world.
If the N9 came to the UK would you switch to MeeGo? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Gmail and Google Calendar to get new look Posted: 30 Jun 2011 11:43 PM PDT
After revealing its latest assault on social networking Google + will be making its mark on Gmail and Calendar. Google is planning a major design overhaul of both Gmail and Google Calendar after it was revealed through their blog that they'll be applying the same design ethos of Google + to all of their services.
Sporting a simpler more spartan look the new Gmail interface is very similar to the old but certainly looks less cluttered, if that was even possible.
According to the official Gmail blog the reasoning behind this change was the feeling that after having added so many new features to the service it needed some cleaning up.
"Over the years, adding countless features to Gmail has made it an increasingly powerful communication hub, but along the way the interface has also become more cluttered and complex."
While only available as a simple beta theme this new look will be rolling out fully in the coming months, with Google Calendar getting an automatic update in the coming weeks.
What do you think, does the new Gmail look better, or was it fine before? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Android app news: Skype update brings free video calls Posted: 30 Jun 2011 11:30 PM PDT
New functionality brings free video calls over Wi-Fi and 3G. Skype has launched a new version of its app for Android 2.0 phones, adding one massive feature - video calling.
The new version of the app will be available to owners of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, HTC Desire S, Google Nexus S and Xperia Pro and will allow free video calls over Wi-Fi and 3G.
As well as that FaceTime-killing piece of functionality, video calls can now also be made between multiple platforms, meaning you can use your Skype enabled Android 2.0 phone to call PCs, Macs, Smart TVs and, yes, iOS devices like the iPhone.
The application, which is only available on an annoyingly-limited number of phones boasting Android 2.0 and above, has also had a lick of paint. You can take a look at the new features in the video promo below.
The new Android 2.0 app comes as Skype prepares to launch an official app for the Apple iPad, meaning there's very few platforms left for Skype to colonise with its free video calling extravaganza.
