News@8pm: LG gives NFC a push and The Daily launches

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

LG came out of the starting blocks with a couple of top stories today. First was news that it was giving NFC payment tech in the UK a real push and looking for a way to make the necessary infrastructure a reality with its smartphones (pictured). It also released a bunch of official details on its upcoming tablet, the G-Slate. Samsung brought us further tablet news, with reports that 15 per cent of Galaxy Tabs have been returned since its launch.

The Android gossip wheel kept turning as further news filtered out about the oft-rumoured Google Music. Google made headlines yet again with an attack on Microsoft’s Bing search engine, which it claims is copying its results. Microsoft has bigger fish to fry, however, issuing a ‘critical’ warning over a new bug in IE.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb unveiled in full by Google

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:13 AM PST

Google throws down the gauntlet to the iPad

Google has shown off the long-awaited tablet-friendly Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet at a launch event in San Francisco.

The top-to-bottom redesign of the OS was first previewed on the Motorola XOOM tablet at CES last month but has now been fully unveiled and looks to be a hugely impressive upgrade to rival iOS on the iPad.

The big changes from the mobile version include a completely new tablet-friendly UI, multi-tasking system, fantastic use of 3D grahpics and animations and a new video chat alternative to FaceTime.

The multitasking tab can be brought up on the left hand side of the screen at any time, allowing users to easily navigate through running apps, while non-intrusive notifications and key settings tabs can be summoned from the bottom right.

Perhaps the most impressive new feature shows a complete revolution of the UI with attractive animations and 3D graphics. Transitions between screens and menus are super slick, while the 'bubbled' widgets allow you to easily scan between emails, videos, and books et al while staying on the homescreen.

Android 3.0 also showcases the new RenderScript 3D graphics platform which was best showcased by a new 3D video wall in YouTube and an exquisite page turning animation in the Books that makes the slickness of Apple's iBooks app look old hat

There's also the new "Application fragment" functionality which will allow developers to present information in panes, just like in iPad applications like Twitter and BBC News. Google thinks that it will allow developers to make apps more intuitive.

All in all it was a massively impressive debut for the new OS, which we're likely to see first on the Motorola XOOM tablet set for launch this Spring.

You can see a preview of the OS here:

The Daily iPad newspaper officially launches in the US

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 08:34 AM PST

$39.99 annual subscription given to iPad newspaper

The Daily, the iPad newspaper amalgamation between Apple and News Corp has officially launched with the tablet exclusive digital newspaper available to download from the Apple App Store now with subscriptions costing $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.

Taking to the stage of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch was joined by Apple’s Vice President of Internet Services Eddy Cue to unveil the latest innovative system for providing news content in the digital age.

Singing the praises of Apple, Steve Jobs and the innovative iPad Murdoch announced: “We’re honoured that Apple has put its backing behind this venture,” before adding the rise in the tablet market pioneered by the iPad has required the news industry to rethink its digital position. The media mogul said: “Simply put the iPad demands we completely re-imagine our craft.”

Announcing “Our target audience is the 50 million Americans who are expected to own tablets in the next year,” Murdoch went on the out the intimate details of The Daily which will offer over 100 pages of original news, life, entertainment, opinion and sports-every single day of the year. New York Times launches News.Me answer to The Daily

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 08:21 AM PST

Twitter pull-in system tailors news to the interests of our peers.

The New York Times has attempted to steal the thunder of The Daily launch today by announcing an exciting socially-themed news reader app for the iPad called News.Me.

The application will pull in news that is being read by your followers on Twitter, while filtering the stories based on how many times they're being read and shared, according to TechCrunch, which has the first hands-on with the app.

Whereas News Corp and Apple will today boast of the original content that will be produced by The Daily's 100-strong team of journalists, News.Me will attempt to perfectly tailor existing news content to its readers.

Downloaders will log into their Twitter accounts and immediately be presented with a host of stories that their followers are already tucking into, but unlike Twitter it won't be just links, but the title, picture and first paragraph or so. Naturally, you'll also be able to share the stories through all of the usual means.

So, if for instance, you're a tech journalist who loves Liverpool FC and the odd bit of movies and current affairs, that should be reflected in those you follow on Twitter and then your daily dose from News.Me should fulfil that need ably.

The app is a collaboration between the NYT and app developer betaworks, there's no word of a release data yet, but there's enough here to spark an interesting debate. Do iPad readers want new content or the best of what's already out there delivered to their device. We'd also imagine there'd be no weekly charge for this either.

4HD to land on Freesat this April as fourth HD channel

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 07:19 AM PST

Freesat to add fourth high-definition channel this April

The high-definition version of Channel 4, 4HD is to arrive on digital TV service Freesat this April, becoming the fourth HD channel to be offered by the subscription-free satellite service.

Announcing the addition to the HD roster via its official Twitter page Freesat teased: “"Morning freesaters, we have some news. You might want to sit down for this one..." before adding: "Channel 4 confirms that 4HD will join Freesat in April."

The arrival of 4HD to Freesat will see Channel 4’s HD offering join the high-definition treats of BBC One HD, BBC HD and ITV 1 HD.

Although trumping Freeview with its HD-touting credentials at launch, the recent arrival of Freeview HD, now reported to be in 642,000 homes across the UK with more than 1.2 million units sold, saw Freesat fall by the wayside to its cabled counterpart’s four available HD channels.

With both Freesat and Freeview HD both now offering users the same four HD channels, the increasing market share of Freeview will be solely attributed to its readily available inclusion inbuilt into a range of the latest high-end TVs.

What subscription-free channels would you most like to see make the quality transition to high-definition? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google proclaims Bing 'cheap imitation' of own service

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 06:26 AM PST

'Bing Sting' outs discrepancies in Microsoft service

Search behemoth Google has branded Microsoft’s rival Bing an “incomplete, stale version – a cheap imitation” of its own service following a cross-platform investigation dubbed ‘Bing Sting’.

The sharp tongued Google comments follow the Bing Sting in which Google created 100 nonsensical searches such as ‘hiybbprgag’ for its online service each of which would return one individual fixed result. The Android OS creator then ran the same queries through Bing finding the exact same single response search result, sparking claims of algorithm plagiarism and general copycat tactics.

Whilst Google has described the Bing discrepancies as “plain and simply cheating,” Microsoft has struck back attempting to quash suggestions of foul play accusing the big G of “spy-novelesque stunts”.

Vice President of Bing, Harry Shum has spoken out on Google’s claims announcing: "We do not copy Google's search results. We use multiple signals and approaches in ranking search results." He added: "Opt-in programs like the toolbar help us with clickstream data, one of many input signals we and other search engines use to help rank sites."

Expanding on his distaste for Google’s attempted besmirching of the Bing system Shum said: "It was a creative tactic by a competitor, and we'll take it as a back-handed compliment."

White iPhone 4 release date set for March as delays outed

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 04:33 AM PST

Hampered camera images cause of white iPhone 4 delay

With speculation heating up around the exact date of arrival for the long overdue white iPhone 4 Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has reportedly confirmed past rumours as to the cause of the handset’s repeated delays.

Apple’s last officially word came back in October stating that the lighter-hued handset would touchdown across the globe this spring with the latest round of delays being caused by the white device being “more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected.”

Speaking in an appearance on The Engadget Show earlier this week, however, Wozniak confirmed previous claims from an anonymous tipster with “connections to Apple” stating that the white iPhone 4 has in fact been heavily postponed due to the lighter-toned paint allowing excessive light to leak into images shot with the handset’s onboard camera.

Continuing to discuss the increasingly leaked and rumoured smartphone Wozniak went on to declare that the issues which have plagued the handset’s formerly June arrival have now been solved and eager iPhone fans can expect to get their hands on the white device in the near future.

Wozniak’s claims come on the same day gadget website PocketLint has claimed that an insider source has reported the long awaited fourth-gen Apple blower will hit UK stores at the end of March, nine months late and just three months ahead of the expected iPhone 5 arrival.

Are you still aimlessly holding out on the white iPhone 4 or did you cave and go for the standard black model long ago? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

For those seeking close quarters multiplayer action, there's the "Stadium" map which is set against the background of a sports complex.

Samsung Galaxy Tab: 15 per cent returned?

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 03:01 AM PST

News comes after two million sales figures were called into question.

The problems appear to be mounting up for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Just days after being forced to admit that those two million sales were actually to distributors rather than gadget fanatics, one Wall Street firm is claiming that as many as 15 per cent of the slates have been returned.

The news comes from the New York Post, which does not specify which Wall Street outfit is making the claims. If true though, it represents a massive issue for the Korean tech titan, with the iPad suffering a far lower two per cent return rate.

The stat covers the period from launch until 16 January, with users apparently unhappy with the user experience. It appears Samsung’s decision to enter the tablet game early with Android FroYo, rather than wait for Honeycomb, has backfired.

With the Galaxy Tab 2 a dead cert for MWC, Samsung probably won’t be too concerned. But this, combined with the bluster about sales, will surely give Apple hope that it can see off the upcoming slew of Android tablets.

LG G-Slate: official details

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 02:55 AM PST

3D, HDMI, storage, and more

Made official at CES, the LG G-Slate’s specs have nevertheless been kept under wraps by LG and T-Mobile. Until this morning, as T-Mobile punted out a press release to US press giving the fully skinny on the tablet. And the big news is you’ll need glasses to enjoy its 8.9-inch 3D screen.

Rear-facing stereoscopic cameras capture 3D video in 1080p, but it’s not clear whether you’ll need active or passive glasses to see into the third dimension. As well as 3D video you can capture 5-megapixel stills, and use an LED flash for low light conditions.

Under the bonnet you get a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 32GB flash storage, a gyroscope and accelerometer. It'll run Android Honeycomb, Wi-Fi comes as standard, and it’ll have 4G for super fast download speeds. Plus an HDMI socket is on board for piping video to your TV for big screen action. T-Mobile is saying a Spring launch, but LG insists it’ll hit the US as soon as March. There’s no word on a UK launch as yet.

Microsoft issue "critical" warning over new IE bug

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 02:51 AM PST

Data loss and computer hijackings result from latest IE issues

Computer giant Microsoft has issued a global warning to users of the Internet Explorer web browser announcing the software could leave your machine open to malicious attacks.

Microsoft has announced that a recently discovered loophole in the web browser, reported to affect all 900 million IE users around the world, has been given a “critical” warning to alert users to potential hack attacks that could see users lose private information or have their computers hijacked.

The system vulnerability which is actually inside the Windows operating systems but appears only when carrying out certain tasks in Internet Explorer is said by the software manufacturers to make users vulnerable to the downloading of malicious files by simply clicking open a web link.

"When the user clicked that link, the malicious script would run on the user's computer for the rest of the current Internet Explorer session," announced Angela Gunn, a representative for Microsoft. She added: "Such a script might collect user information, e.g e-mail, spoof content displayed in the browser or otherwise interfere with the user's experience."

Unable to remotely remove the bug from its software Microsoft has declared that it has already issued a temporary patch that will fix the issue whilst it works on a more permanent solution. All Internet Explorer users are being urged to download the patch at the earliest convenience.

LG pushes for NFC payments infrastructure in the UK

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 02:40 AM PST

But haven't we been here before?

LG has announced plans to stock NFC in all its future phones, and push for a realistic infrastructure in Europe to allow for contactless payments. With this uptake, LG joins Samsung, Nokia, RIM and possibly Apple as one of the group of smartphone producers in favour of bringing NFC to fruition.

Details are thin on the ground, but it is understood that LG is currently testing the point of sale technology, which will allow users to pay for items under a specific price by simply waving their handset past a sensor. It will be aimed at quick payments and small businesses such as pubs. LG’s initial testing ground is Europe and the UK.

Samsung’s Nexus S currently sports NFC tech, as does LG’s Optimus Black and Optimus 2X. It’s estimated that by 2015 860 million NFC-capable smartphones will be in use, but do you think the system will take off? O2 trialled the tech some 5 years ago (with O2 Wallet) to no avail, after all. Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Nintendo 3DS Super Mario Bros "soon"

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 02:09 AM PST

Will new-look version of game be ready for 25 March launch?

Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Mario, has confirmed that he’s already hard at work on a Super Mario Bros Nintendo 3DS game, with the aim of touting the new title, “… as soon as possible.”

Speaking on the official US Wii website with Ninty boss Satoru Iwata, Miyamoto said, “In the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system.”

Iwata added he wanted to show the world just how a 3DS version of Mario would work. The title was not part of Nintendo’s European 3DS launch in Amsterdam, but will surely be clamoured after on release.

With the Nintendo 3DS due out on 25 March here in Blighty, don’t expect to see a finished version of Super Mario Bros for some time. Can’t wait to get a 3DS? Or holding out for a Sony NGP instead? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iOS 4.3 edges closer to release

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 01:01 AM PST

Will iOS 4.3 come alongside The Daily?

iOS 4.3 has edged closer to release, with devs being seeded the latest version of the mobile operating system to tinker around with. The new effort, which is set to rock personal hotspot smarts, has yet to be pegged with an official release date.

The new version of iOS 4.3 is said to come with the ability to delete apps mid-download, giving you one last chance to kill off a purchase before it’s too late. You’ll be able to delete said apps by holding down the home button, entering wiggle mode and pressing the close button, just as you do with apps already on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

AirPlay tweaks and the iPad’s side switch getting mute and orientation lock skills have already been billed as iOS 4.3’s other main features. Recurring subscriptions are also being planned for the revamped OS as part of The Daily’s release, scheduled for today.

With the News International and Apple tie-up due, could we finally get an iOS 4.3 release date today as well? Stay tuned here, and to our Facebook and Twitter pages, for more as we get it.

iPad 2 display revealed

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 11:56 PM PST

Display points to thinner, slimmer iPad 2.

There’s a veritable smorgasbord of iPad 2 rumours out there. But as Apple gossip goes, few things are better than a parts leak. And the chaps at 9to5mac have dutifully obliged by purportedly laying their hands on the second-gen slate’s display.

The screen is apparently 1mm thinner, with the bezel stripped back from its current, rather capacious state. What’s more, the Mac-obsessed site has got the part number for the iPad 2 display: LP097X02-SLN1.

One wily user has done some sleuthing and claims the part number points to a 9.7-inch panel with a 1024x768 resolution. It’s yet more evidence that the iPad 2 will not come with a Retina Display as some had hoped.

There’s still no word on when we can expect an official iPad 2 announcement. But with this many leaks, surely it’s just a matter of weeks before Apple finally reveals all about its new tablet.

Google Music and Android Market web store launching today?

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 11:37 PM PST

New offerings were touted at last year's Google I/O event.

Still guessing as to what Google will reveal at its Honeycomb-themed event this evening in San Francisco? Well, insiders claim to know just what the Big G has planned, with Google Music and its already-touted web-based version of Android Market set for release.

Both offerings were shown off at May 2010’s Google I/O event. One source, who has spoken to Android And Me and has, “…provided accurate information in the past”, says the new version of Google’s app store is ready to roll.

The web-based edition of Android Market will let punters scout round for apps on their PCs before sending them over-the-air to their phones. It should give Google the impetus it needs as Apple surges ahead with over ten billion app sales.

Elsewhere, Business Week says it has spoken to a number of sources who say Google Music is on the verge of release. The new service, which will let you upload tunes to the cloud and stream the remotely, thus doing away with the need for local storage, is finished and just needs final legal approval from the big four record labels.

With deals apparently close to completion, there’s a good chance we could see an iTunes/Spotify rival land later today. Expect to hear more about Honeycomb too, including just when it;ll be heading into the wild.

Stay tuned right here for all the news from Google’s Honeycomb event as it happens and remember to keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.
