Hawk-Eye on FIFA shortlist for goal-line technology

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 07:35 AM PST

T3 talks to Sony about its latest broadcasting buy

Yesterday, Sony officially announced its acquisition of Hawk-Eye Ltd and we now have confirmation that the live sports ball tracking system has been shortlisted by FIFA to potentially solve the long-running goal-line technology debate.

T3 spoke to David Bush, Director of Marketing, Sony Professional who revealed hopes for the company to bring the technology to other sports including the 'beautiful game' saying:

"Football is an area of interest. Everything as you know hinges on FIFA and the direction they will take with goal-line technology. FIFA made an announcement at the weekend that there is no firm decision. It’s still positive in terms of direction. But there is still a lot more trials needed. Now we are waiting to here more details about that, but I can say that Hawk-Eye is one of the shortlisted companies taking part in those trials."

Bush also revealed that FIFA is planning to make a decision on goal-line technology early next year, "FIFA outlined a decision point of about this time next year to the equivalent meeting next year around March time when they expect to make a final decision."

Whether Sony have had direct discussions with FIFA, Bush said that none had taken place but that Sony Professional would be "supporting the trials with Hawk-Eye."

As well as continuing to grow the presence of Hawk-Eye in cricket and tennis where the technology is most prominently used, the first steps in the new relationship look set to be focused around 3D. Bush commented that the growing subject in broadcasting was a 'predictable first base," adding, "In the short term we will be looking at things like 3D as the first flowering of that relationship."

Do you think Sony and Hawk-Eye joining forces could finally signal the introduction of goal-line technology? Let us know your thoughts about it via Twitter and Facebook.

Apple iOS 4.3 update to go live 6pm GMT today?

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 07:19 AM PST

Upcoming iOS update due earlier than expected

The latest update to Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 4.3, is expected to launch today as rumours circulate around the imminent update.

The rumours, which come courtesy of tech blog BGR, suggest a “source” has revealed the eagerly awaited iOS release will touch down at 10am PT, 6pm here in the UK, ahead of arriving preinstalled on the iPad 2 when the second-gen tablet touches down in the States this Friday, March 11th.

Whilst unsurprisingly unconfirmed by Apple, an iOS 4.3 release today would see iDevice users given the opportunity to update to the OS and get used to its new features before it starts rolling out of stores already installed on the latest hardware.

iOS 4.3’s killer feature, one which iPhone users have long been awaiting, will see user’s devices transformed into personal hotspot makers. According to the BGR source, the number of devices able to be supported by the iOS 4.3 kit will be set a three with networks able to upgrade this to five. iOS users looking to upgrade will need to ensure their devices are backed up and their computers are running the latest version of iTunes.

Will we really see iOS 4.3 touchdown later today? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and share your thoughts on the new OS features. While you wait iOS 4.3 why not take a look at our hands-on video with the iPad 2.

Philips debuts AirPlay speaker system

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 06:15 AM PST

Stylish dock with impressive sound

Today in Barcelona, Philips introduced its first Airplay speaker system: the Fidelio SoundSphere docking station, which lets you stream music from an iPhone, iPad and MacBook over WiFi without the need for cables.

The system comprises of two speakers with an unusual curved design and a tweeter that 'floats' above. There's a seperate dock for your iPhone 4 or iPad.  As well as looking stunning, the unique design is supposed to project sound in multiple directions, to create a wider sound. T3 was lucky enough to have a demonstration earlier, and they certainly sound impressive.

Previous AirPlay compatible devices such as the Denon Ceol and B&W Zeppelin have been at the premium end of the market, and the Fidelio SoundSphere looks to be in a similar price bracket, with Euro pricing of 799 confirmed, although there's no news yet from Philips on UK pricing.

The Fidelio SoundSphere will launch in May, find out more from Philips

Double Dragon comes to iPhone, gets a revamp

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 05:34 AM PST

New features boost beat-em-up's first mobile outing.

NES fans will be doing cartwheels today with the news that Double Dragon has arrived on the App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

The mobile iteration of the game features a host of new features rather than being just a straight-up transfer of ancient version that we've seen with many iPhone games.

Double Dragon iPhone brings new moves, which can be used against new bosses and enemies. Your success will now be rewarded by unlockable characters and achievements. For more than single player action you can hook-up to a second iOS device using Bluetooth.

The graphics have also been greatly improved, but fans of the original beat-em-up will be glad to know that all of the action takes place on the same stage.

Double Dragon iOS is available to buy now from the App Store for the introductory price of £2.39. Sounds like a deal to us.

New Xbox console plans revealed by jobs listings

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 03:54 AM PST

Upcoming Xbox refresh teased by jobs listings

Microsoft has seemingly outed plans for the next-generation Xbox console as jobs postings for the upcoming gaming device appear online via social job listing site Linkedin.

The three new positions, all of which are expressly said to relate to the Xbox console, are searching for a graphics hardware architect, a performance architect and a hardware verification engineer. Although offering an exciting prelude to an upcoming console release, the position titles suggest the next-gen Xbox is still only in the early stages of development.

Offering little information as to what the next-gen Xbox, or Xbox 720 as it has repeatedly been claimed to be called, will have in store for gamers. All but confirming a new Xbox is in the works, the three jobs listings say successful candidates will be working on “next generation consoles” and “future platforms.”

Having originally launched back in 2005, the Xbox 360 has remained a top seller in the console market, repeatedly topping bitter rival Sony and the PlayStation 3. With its life cycle seemingly coming to an end, Microsoft boosted sales of the 260 late last year with the global launch of Kinect, the Xbox compatible controller free motion gaming peripheral.

Searching for senior Xbox staff Microsoft has declared the graphics hardware architect must have “been the lead architect and/or implementation lead of a 3D graphics core.” Adding: “The candidate must have taken designs from investigation to end-customer shipment during their career.”

News of the next-gen Xbox plans come just a day after Nintendo was rumoured to be preparing the Wii 2 for launch as the second-generation Wii is touted as heading to a June unveiling at E3 with an inbuilt Blu-ray player, quad-core processor and a projector.

Which future console do you most eagerly await the Wii 2 or the Xbox 720? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset will not be released

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 03:02 AM PST

Images are real, but phone won't be hitting shelves says mobile watcher.

The leaked Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset which caused such a stir earlier this week will not be released. That’s according to renowned mobile watcher Eldar Murtazin, who says that the blower was only ever a prototype.

Rumours flew after the photos were first seen, with Sony Ericsson having committed itself to making a Windows Phone before going all in with Google Android. However, while SE could still unleash a WP7 cell, this won’t be it.

Little is known about the prototype, other than its Xperia-esque design and choice of operating system. With SE’s new Android phones so sleek, it’s hard to see where this would fit in right now.

Gutted this isn’t Sony Ericsson’s official WP7 phone? Tell us on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Windows Phone 7: Copy and paste available on HTC Mozart

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PST

Leaked update ROM available to download now...

Windows Phone 7 is an undoubtedly (and somewhat uncharacteristically for Microsoft) slick and pretty mobile operating system, but it does have a few missing fundamental features. One of which is the ability to copy and paste, which these days is a must.

Microsoft is set to imminently release a software update to add that essential functionality, but there’s good news for those who can’t wait – the update has appeared online as a ROM for the HTC Mozart. Install the ROM from the source link below at XDA-Forums, and your Mozart will be gifted the update – known as NoDo – as well as have any network branding (Orange, for example) removed from its OS.

We’re still not sure of the exact date that Microsoft will be rolling out the NoDo update properly, but it should be this month. If you install the ROM, let us know how you get on via the T3 Twitter feed.

iPhone 5 to host 64GB storage following prototype leak?

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 02:52 AM PST

Upcoming iPhone to follow iPhone 4 prototype to 64GB storage capacity

A prototype iPhone 4 has emerged with a number of leaked images showing that Apple was working on a 64GB model ahead of the device’s launch last June.

Although only 16GB and 32GB versions of the fourth-generation Apple blower made it to stores, the leaked images reveal a 64GB capacity handset was in the works, hinting towards a possible larger storage addition to the upcoming range of iPhone 5 handsets.

Snapped touting 59.1GB of free storage space, the prototype device, which has appeared via a Hong Kong website, can be seen with an etched ‘XX’ replacing the device's rear branded storage credentials. Despite not making it into full production, the leaked device gives a tantalising insight into the future of Apple’s market leaking smartphone and what specs the iPhone 5 might launch with.

With tech blog GeekyGadgets declaring: “this gives us a good idea that the new iPhone 5 will come with 64GB of storage,” the potentially upped capacity of the iPhone 5 is believed to be joined by the same A5 dual-core processor that will feature in the recently unveiled iPad 2 and, if rumours are to be believed, a new metallic back casing with the handset’s antenna built in to the rear mounted Apple logo.

What features would you most like to see on the mooted Apple iPhone 5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. While you wait for the iPhone 5 check out our hands-on video with the latest Apple device, the iPad 2.

Philips 9000 Series Smart LED TV officially announced

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 02:42 AM PST

9000 Series is the fastest LCD screen on the planet. According to Philips...

Philips has unveiled its 9000 Series Smart LED TV that it claims is the fastest LCD screen on the market.

Measuring in at less than 40mm thick, the 9000 delivers full HD 3D using Active 3D technology and also boasts real-time 2D to 3D conversion.

3D Max technology which can process two billion pixels per second ensures great clarity and sharpness, while the fastest response rate claim comes courtesy of a 400Hz Clear LCD display that has a 0.5 millisecond response time.

To give your 3D added brightness, there’s 3D Super Resolution while LED Pro technology gives images extreme contrast. In the sound department, a 40W soundstage should do audio justice to your favourite 3D flicks.

Jumping aboard the Smart TV train, you’ll be able to access movie rental stores, and get access to Facebook and Twitter all which can alternatively be controlled by your smartphone or tablet.

If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, Philips is also offering full-screen gaming that can be either split screen in 2D mode or a 3D mode where each player can simultaneously see his or her view on the entire TV screen.

There has been no confirmation of a release date or pricing for the 9000 Series, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we know more. We imagine it won’t be cheap.

Spotify hits one million paid subscribers

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 01:01 AM PST

Premium and Unlimited offerings help Spotify to one million paying punters in Europe.

Spotify has passed one million paid subscribers in Europe. The Swedish streaming service, which lets you listen to and share playlists with your pals, hit one million users across its free and paid for offerings two years ago.

Spotify founder Daniel Ek said, “It’s a testament to our fantastic users who continue to support us and spread the Spotify word, either by telling friends or sharing some of the 200 million playlists that you’ve put together so far.”

Ek said there were, “…even more cool new features,” to come, but kept tight-lipped on when the much-mooted US Spotify launch would take place.

Paying punters can choose between Spotify Unlimited for £4.99, which offers ad-free playback via PC or Mac, or Spotify Premium, which lets music lovers stream tunes using the service’s iPhone, Android and Symbian apps.

Xbox 360 price cut coming in June?

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 11:48 PM PST

Michael Pachter says Microsoft will slash cost of console this summer.

Microsoft is plotting a price cut for the Xbox 360 this June and will announce its plans at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles. That’s according to gaming analyst Michael Pachter, a man renowned for being on the money when it comes to matters like these.

He reckons that with costs not being officially slashed for 18 months, the time is ripe for Microsoft to steal a march on its rivals, especially with Kinect still riding high. “We believe that Microsoft is in the driver's seat on pricing, and believe that the company may consider a price cut for the core console plus Kinect to under $300 (£185) in June,” he said. Such a bundle costs £255 on these shores at the moment.

What’s more Pachter thinks Microsoft’s move will lead to the PS3 and Wii being slashed in order to compete. He says the Wii’s fading popularity could be tempered by a price cut and expects all three consoles to be $50 cheaper by Christmas.

Are you holding out for a cheap console? Will Microsoft really use E3 to put the Xbox 360 into the bargain bucket? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Google Maps Navigation gets rerouting skills

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 11:32 PM PST

Big G reveal latest add-on to TomTom-bashing freebie.

Google has given its ace Maps Navigation app an update, bringing automatic rerouting to the gratis satnav add-on. That means your phone will now work its way around traffic snarls without you having to do a thing.

The idea, says the Big G, is to get you from A to B as fast as possible, rather than simply picking the fastest route geographically and leaving you to it. The use of real time traffic info is nothing new: TomTom has done it with is HD Traffic and IQ Routes features for years. The difference is, Google Maps Navigation doesn’t cost you a penny.

Google will also be using historical data to calculate the smartest routes for you to take, with the aim of making tiresome traffic jams a thing of the past.
