Online porn industry to boycott .XXX domain plans Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:03 AM PST Adult industry to boycott planned XX domain suffix Adult industry lobbying group, The Free Speech Coalition, is to hold protests at an upcoming Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meeting over the proposed plans to introduce a .XXX domain.
Announcing the plans via the group’s blog Free Speech Coalition Executive Director, Diane Duke, said, in slightly suggestive terms considering the nature of the protests, "There are two ways to defeat .XXX. One, with a BANG, and the other, with a trickle."
Adding intensity to the upcoming protests Duke’s comments go on to conclude: "Remember, more of these domain names have failed than succeeded, and without the support of the industry it is purported to serve .XXX is history!"
Do you approve or shun the potential introduction of a .XXX adult domain suffix? Let us know your thoughts on the plans via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Zite personalised magazine app lands on iPad Posted: 09 Mar 2011 06:24 AM PST Could this be a better alternative to The Daily? A new iPad app which learns which web content you like to access and loads it all into personalised magazine has gone live on the App Store today.

Call of Duty helps trauma of former frontline soldiers Posted: 09 Mar 2011 04:55 AM PST War sims help those who have faced the real thing War-themed games such as the hugely popular Call of Duty franchise can help former soldiers cope with mental trauma caused by serving on the frontline, a new study has found.
The study, carried out by the New Scientist, found that a group of 98 former military personnel suffered less violent and aggressively themed games when exposed to war-based video game titles prior to sleep. Soldiers who did not play war-themed games reported more violent dreams and a sense of helplessness.
Gackenbach added on the soldiers: “They’re taking PlayStation 3s, Xbox 360s and other consoles into the field and playing them all the time. And it turns out, there may be a good reason to let them do that.”

Apple founder Steve Wozniak speaks out on Jobs' illness Posted: 09 Mar 2011 03:50 AM PST Jobs medical leave fears covered by Wozniak Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out on the fruity tech company and the absence of CEO and former partner Steve Jobs claiming Apple will continue to function fine without the turtleneck-loving head.
Wozniak, who parted ways with Apple back in the ‘80s, remains a major shareholder in the company he helped found with Jobs and has today spoken out on the current medically-induced leave of absence Jobs is undertaking.
Arguably the most recognisable tech CEO, Jobs is currently undertaking his third medical leave of absence since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2004. Having taken time off for a liver transplant in recent years Jobs’ most recent illness related absence is currently shrouded in mystery having announced back in January: "At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.”
Jobs made a surprise appearance at the recent iPad 2 unveiling where he took to the San Francisco stage to officially announce the slimmed-down second-generation tablet that will come boasting a dual-core processor and dual cameras.
Will Jobs’ absence from Apple affect the company’s product output? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and check out our hands-on with the latest Apple product, the iPad 2, below.

BlackBerry PlayBook getting 7Digital Music Store Posted: 09 Mar 2011 01:11 AM PST Move follows tie-up between two companies on BlackBerry phones. We’re still awaiting the BlackBerry PlayBook’s release, almost six months after RIM first showed off the iPad-botherer. But if ever there was another reason to nab one when it finally hits shelves, this is it. The 7Digital Music Store will come preloaded on the PlayBook from launch.
The move means punters will have access to 13 million 320kbps MP3s, all flogged at the same price as tunes found on 7Digital’s regular web portal. The PlayBook version of the store will also pack a recommendation engine, so music lovers can snag more of the tunes they want (and make 7Digital and BlackBerry a pretty penny in the process).
The store will only be available in the US and Canada at launch, with further rollouts planned for later this year. That’s a bit of a surprise seeing as 7Digital’s a British company.
Expect to see plenty more about this hook-up, as the two companies show off extacly how the app works at this year’s South by South West event in Austin, Texas.

Apple iOS 5 and MobileMe event set for April Posted: 08 Mar 2011 11:49 PM PST Details on next-gen OS and updated cloud storage service expected. Apple will officially show off its plans for iOS 5 and its rejigged MobileMe service at an event in April. That’s according to a “trusted source” who has spoken with the German Apple fanatics at Macerkopf.de.
Word is the bash will take place in the first two weeks of next month. The timing ties in with similar event in 2009 and 2010 which touted iOS 3 and iOS 4 respectively.
The updated MobileMe, which is said to include digital locker skills, music and video streaming over the cloud and a new personal web space for each user, had been rumoured to take a bow at last week’s iPad 2 event.
iOS 5 will likely be released in the summer, at the same time as the iPhone 5. That means we can expect to see it some time in June, when Apple holds its annual WWDC event in San Francisco.

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 11:36 PM PST No specs or deets as Sammy keeps everyone guessing. Samsung’s 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab has been talked up no end already. But we’ve not had any official snaps or word from Sammy to go on. Until now.
See, it’s just released a teaser pic, showing the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and promising to reveal all at a special event in Orlando, Florida on 22 March. What’s more, the pic suggests this device could be as slim, or even slimmer, than the 8.8mm iPad 2.
The width of a headphone jack is clearly about as thick as this thing gets, which means we could be looking at some serious design smarts when the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is detailed.
We’ll be bringing you all the official news on the Galaxy Tab 8.9 as it happens on 22 March, so stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
