News@8pm: Galaxy Tab lands and CoD: Black Ops trailer

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Samsung Galaxy Tab, 7-inch competitor of the Apple iPad has launched across the UK today at a prices starting from just £99. Elsewhere in Galaxy Tab land, T-Mobile has appeared to leak a 10.1-inch Samsung Tablet running Windows OS. What a better time for the Samsung Galaxy Tab's launch than a day when Apple has come under fire. Looks like the clocks turning back has revealed an alarm bug in the iPhones, causing people to be late for work. Oops.

The Facebook Phone is set to enter the realms of reality this week, at least that's what some expect from the Facebook mobile feature unveiling announced today. As if that's not enough, police detectives are now being given Facebook training to help in their investigations. This is Joe Bloggs, he has 256 friends, he likes robbing old ladies, it says so in his status, go and arrest him. Closing on Facebook's tail, however, is micro-blogging site Twitter which is reportedly on target to top 200 million users by the end of the year.

A new CoD: Black Ops trailer has been released today entitled 'Official Launch Trailer.' We don't know about you, but it's got us reaching for our plastic assault rifles in anticipation for its release next week. If you’re also excited about getting a Nintendo Wii this Christmas, don't be. Rumours of a price cut in the Wii have been rebuked. Looks like we're all going to be paying Santa the normal price this year folks or opting for the Move or Kinect.

New PSP Phone pictures  have hit the net in another leak. Sony's PlayStation Phone has once again surfaced well ahead of schedule, this time with some new pics to show it off. If you think that's some stylish tech then you obviously haven't seen the world's first solar powered wireless keyboard unveiled by Logitech. This will really bring some sunshine into your digital life.

Twitter on target to reach 200 million users this year

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 10:16 AM PDT

Micro-blogging site targets Facebook's 500 million

Micro blogging site Twitter is reportedly on target to reach 200 million users by the end of the year as it bids to chase down Facebook’s staggering following.

According to the New York Times, Twitter is now hosting 175 million users, up from the 145 million registered users officially reported by the social networking site back in September.

If Twitter continues to grow at this phenomenal pace, adding 30 million users in just two months, it is expected to breach the 200 million milestone before January 1st roles around to mark the beginning of 2011. Reported users for the end of 2009 saw Twitter sporting just 58 million users.

Whilst these figures are hugely impressive, user retention, an issue that has repeatedly troubled Twitter has yet to be reported for the latest figures.

Have you already signed up to Twitter? If so follow the T3 Twitter page. If you’re are still a Facebook fan, however, fret not, T3 is there too.

Fable III tops UK video game chart after opening weekend

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 09:52 AM PDT

The UK video game charts has a new leader in the form of Fable III

Fable III has topped the UK video game charts just days after launch, outselling its predecessor Fable II in the process with 128, 895 copies of the RPG shifting in its opening weekend.

Lionhead Studio’s Peter Molyneux is reportedly pleased with the opening figures and the news that the latest Fable release has removed title rivals Fallout: New Vegas from the table's top spot and into third place. The UKIE leak also reveals that Fallout: New Vegas has sold 69,613 copies since its release on the 22nd October.

In other chart news FIFA 11 has risen in the league following a strong weekend performance to take second place from Medal of Honor which has dropped to sixth. Weekend newcomer, Star Wars: the Force Unleashed II, that launched on the same day as Fable III, didn’t do too bad as it went straight into the charts in fifth place.

As to how well Fable III will do over the coming weeks, only time will tell. Peter Molyneux was said to want 500,000 people playing Fable III in order to see it a success. With over one fifth of that number reached in just the first several days alone and the Christmas gaming rush on the horizon, we’re sure it will certainly reach Molyneux’s expectations and then some.

Have you bought Fable III yet or are you a Fallout: New Vegas fan? What game do you think should be at the top spot of the UK chart? Let us know what you think on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Apple iPad spotted running iOS 4.2 in online video

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 08:43 AM PDT

iPad caught with iOS 4.2 ahead of global rollout

A video of an Apple iPad running the upcoming iOS 4.2 operating system has emerged online as the new multitasking and Game Centre features get showcased ahead of the OS’s global rollout later this month.

Whilst the iPhone and iPod Touch have been on the receiving end of major operating system overhauls in recent months, Apple’s market leading tablet device has remained untouched and devoid of the key features that have appeased previously disgruntled users.

The new video, which appeared on YouTube, offers a comprehensive look at the upcoming OS and the features it is to bring to the iPad such as the coveted multitasking, which like its pocketable siblings will be accessible via a double-tap of the home button, and the Game Centre feature which was introduced in September alongside the latest generation of iPods.

Whilst an exact date of arrival has yet to be announced of iOS 4.2 on the iPad, Steve Jobs declared back at the iPod unveiling that the update would land in November bringing wireless printing to the tablet device, amongst a range of other features.

What functions would you like to see added to the Apple iPad? Share your thoughts and hopes with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. For all the latest on iOS 4.2 and its UK arrival stay tuned to T3.com.

Moves made to lay foundations for Kinect UK launch

Microsoft has pushed up the prices of Xbox Live subscriptions on the same day it also announces the arrival of the latest Xbox Live update.

UK gamers will only experience a price hike for one month subscriptions which goes from up from £4.99 to £5.99, in comparison to Xbox 360 owners in the US where one month subs go up from $7.99 to $9.99, three month plans up from $19.99 to $24.99, and a year-long membership rise of $59.99 which is up from $49.99.

The better news is that the new Xbox LIVE update also launches today in preparation for the arrival of Kinect which is available in the US from November 1st, and from November 10th in the UK.

Notable new additions include a revamped Sky Player which sports a new interface and gives Gold LIVE members the opportunity to access a back catalogue of Sky content and recommend shows to fellow users.

Zune Movie marketplace is now available for Xbox LIVE users in the UK adding on-demand movies from the likes of 20th Century Fox and MGM, and allowing users to stream rented movies to a Windows PC or sync with a Windows Phone 7 handset. Zune Pass subscriptions which will set you back £8.99 per month gives Gold LIVE members access to unlimited streaming music.

As Kinect is likely to lead to more family-led gaming, Microsoft has also announced the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack which will offer up to four individual Xbox LIVE Gold memberships for £69.99 a month and has added new settings such as access to monitoring reports and the Family Centre.

Facebook Phone incoming at 'Mobile Event' this week?

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 07:07 AM PDT

Facebook promises new Mobile features this Wednesday

Facebook has announced it is to unveil new mobile features this Wednesday, November 3rd, as rumours continue to flow around a mooted Facebook Phone from the social network king.

Invites to Wednesday's California event have been sent out to the press giving little away on the announcement's content: “Please join us for a mobile event at Facebook HQ.” The invite’s graphic, however, suggests that some sort of communication oriented aspect will be the main focus of the announcement, as it shows the Facebook Friends symbol with a cup and string phone to both ears.

Although there is much speculation most rumours point towards either the unveiling of the fabled Facebook mobile phone, a desktop feature for mobiles or a new type of instant messaging. Whatever it may be, we won’t know until Wednesday.

Other rumours surrounding the event are suggesting the social network's announcement will involve the company's recent acquisition of Drop.io, the file sharing service, similar to Dropbox.

What do you think might be the subject of this coming announcement from Facebook? Is it a new phone or something Drop.io related? Let us know your opinions via our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Apple iPhone alarm bug emerges as UK clocks change

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 05:28 AM PDT

Apple leaves iPhone users sleeping

A bug in Apple’s iPhone has reportedly cost thousands of users an hour of their lives and resulted in missed appointments as the handset’s alarm failed to recognise the change in the clocks over the weekend.

Whilst the timekeeper on the portable Apple blower had no-problems auto-adjusting to the European clock changes, numerous user reports have revealed recurring pre-set alarms were delayed by an hour as the handsets alarm system continued to run to the previous time zone.

The problem, which was originally reported by iPhone users in Australia and New Zealand back in September when their clocks moved forward, is currently awaiting a fix that Apple suggests will come with iOS version 4.2 later this month.

Advice given to iPhone users unable to make use of this additional hour in bed each day is to set alarms daily instead of relying on recurring ones. Oceania users reported that the fault corrected itself after a number of weeks.

Nintendo Wii price cuts will not happen ahead of Christmas

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Thinking of getting the Nintendo Wii for a cheaper price this Christmas? Think again.

Bad news for Christmas shoppers who were hoping to bag a Nintendo Wii shaped bargin this year, as Japanese company annouces new competitors and big losses will not result in price cuts.

Satoru Iwata, CEO of Nintendo said that “Of course, we cannot say it will never happen, but we are not thinking of it for the near future.”

Iwata went on to explain that “Those who really wanted it would have already bought it, so now we need to reach those who considered it but never got around to buying it."

The only incentive Nintendo has launched this festive period is the release a new red hued edition  of the Wii in celebration of Mario's 25th anniversary.

Iwata’s rebuke of a Wii price cut comes as somewhat of a surprise after the company recently announced massive quarterly losses as well as facing fierce competition in the motion gaming market for the first time as both Sony and Microsoft launch gesture gaming peripherals in Move and Kinect respectively.

What do you have to say about it? Will the Wii soon be obsolete? Does Nintendo have to do a lot more than just bring out a Wii in a new colour in order to gain your approval? Let us know via our Twitter and Facebook pages.

T3 Readers: iPad to dominate over new MacBook Air

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 04:37 AM PDT

The iPad remains the top dog in this battle for computer supremacy

Last week’s T3 poll results are in and we asked you if the new MacBook Air would usurp the iPad. Well, faithful readers, you have spoken and the iPad stands proudly triumphant over the sorely beaten MacBook Air.

With a majority of 64.12% of the votes, you decided that the MacBook Air was not worth £900 for a ‘glorified notebook.’ One reader commented: ‘as with all Macs it’s a high quality product aimed at people who care more about their tech being cool than actually useful...900 quid for a premium Netbook...no thanks.’ By the look of the results it seemed most of you agreed.

As for the 35.88% that voted for the MacBook Air it seems that you’ve lost this battle in the T3 polls. The MacBook Air might prevail in the end, however, given its release was just a few short weeks ago, so it has plenty of time to catch up yet.

Until that day, if it ever comes, T3's Gadget of the Year looks set to reign supreme and dominate not only the tablet market but the battle of the Apple powerhouses.

Samsung Galaxy Tab UK launch prices revealed at £99

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 04:11 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy Tab priced for UK launch

As Samsung’s 7-inch iPad competitor the Samsung Galaxy Tab is officially launched across the UK today, network providers are slowly breaking rank to reveal their prices for the ultra portable computing device.

Three Mobile was the first to reveal its prices for the 1GHz, Android 2.2 powered tablet setting prices through the Carphone Warehouse that sees the Galaxy Tab available from as little as £99.99 upto £349.99 depending on contract length and inclusive data.

With the device priced at a one-off £99.99, Three customers will have to fork over £40 per month for two years with 5GB of inclusive data for company. Whilst Three is currently not offering any voice plans for the Galaxy Tab, wannabe owners will be able to pick it up for £149.99 on a 24 month £35 per month deal with 5GB of data and 200 text messages thrown in for good measure.

Whilst Orange has followed Currys and Amazon in offering the Galaxy Tab for £529 pay as you go, O2 has fallen wide of the competitive mark pricing its PAYG Galaxy Tab deal at £599.

Orange’s pay monthly contracts start from a £5 per month 1 month rolling contract with the tablet priced £529 to 1 year, £15 per month contract that will set customers back an initial £499 for 1GB of anytime data and 1GB of quiet time (12am – 4pm) data.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest prices for the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

10-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab leaked running Windows OS

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 03:58 AM PDT

Samsung to launch 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab?

As the Samsung Galaxy Tab officially hits stores across the UK today, an online faux pas by network provider T-Mobile has seemingly outed a 10-inch model of Sammy’s iPad rival.

The page, which appeared on the T-Mobile website before quickly being taken down, touted a seemingly new breed of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, not only sporting an iPad comparable 10.1-inch screen but running Microsoft’s Windows 7 Starter Edition operating system.

The first Samsung Galaxy Tab is today hitting the market in the UK as the 7-inch Android 2.2 powered pocketable tablet is launched across a number of network providers and with a number of Carphone Warehouse stores opening early in expectation of keen interest in the first true iPad competitor.

Like the launched 7-inch model, the leaked 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab is, according to the T-Mobile spec sheet, still to sport a 1024 x 600p resolution display. Other than that, however, the new 10-inch device appears to be a step forward in tablet computing with a 1.66GHz processor, whopping 160GB harddrive and 1GB of DDR2 RAM.

Whilst this improved and enlarged Galaxy Tab is yet to be mentioned by Samsung and UK pricing and release dates are but a pipe dream, this leaked specsheet opens up a lot of expectation in what is becoming a fiercely competitive and crowded tablet market.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on the expected 10-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Future mobile networks could be "wireless" humans

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 01:32 AM PDT

Want access to the internet? Get a human.

Experts from Queen's University Belfast believe that humans wearing wireless sensors can be the backbone of powerful mobile Internet networks, which can provide constant access to the World Wide Web.

High-bandwidth networks on these sensors would do away with the need for a large amount of mobile phone base stations.

Dr Simon Cotton says, "In the past few years a significant amount of research has been undertaken into antennas and systems designed to share information across the surface of the human body."

He continues to say that research on how to transfer information to another location, ie outside of the body, has been limited. In his opinion, the benefits of humans wearing such sensors would be improvements in mobile gaming and remote healthcare.

Calling it body-to-body networks or BBN, the next generation of smartphones could be the main carriers of the new technology.

Dr Cotton and his team have been awarded a five-year Research Fellowship by the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and the Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC) to further research and develop this concept.

BT broadband restored to affected households

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 12:39 AM PDT

Back to browsing the web

After being without broadband for most of the weekend, BT has restored access to broadband to the thousands of customers who were affected.

BT customers in Northern Ireland, the North of England and part of Scotland were affected by the issue caused by a technical fault on Friday evening.

Phone services were available during the affected times. No comment was made about what caused the technical fault.

BT has advised its customers that if they haven't been able to get online to switch off their device for 10 minutes and then switch it out again.

Broadband has been a long-discussed issue recently, with speeds the major talking point.

BT has spoken about a fibre-optic rollout to all its broadband customers, and is behind installing the first underground wi-fi connection at Charing Cross.

Facebook lessons given to detectives

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 12:05 AM PDT

Catching the bad guys just entered the web 2.0 phase

If there's a crime, detectives going over to Twitter and Facebook might be the next logical step.

Police detectives are being trained to use Facebook and Twitter to catch killers.

Social networking training is being introduced by The National Policing Improvement Agency in order to bring its training in line with current times.

Deputy Chief Constable Nick Gargan, acting head of the NPIA, said: "This programme is a vital part of the career pathway for detectives and the new training covers sensitive areas of policing where limited guidance existed previously."

The challenges of modern policing is behind the introduction of these new training methods. The new training procedures will cover topics such as how to gather evidence from mobile phones, computers, CCTV and National Footwear Reference Collection images.

The NPIA's Initial Crime Investigators Development Programme is taken 3,500 students each year who will benefit from these changes.

With all the privacy issues surrounding Facebook and users being quite free with what they put online, here's hoping more criminals are apprehended via social media.

Do you think Facebook/Twitter training can help police catch criminals? Click to T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and tell us what you think. Follow us for regular updates on all things tech.
