News@8pm: Gran Turismo 5 patch and PSP phone leaks

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Following the launch of Gran Turismo 5 yesterday, a number of issues with the long awaited racing sim have emerged essentially spoiling gamers' experiences with the game they waited five years for. The biggest cause for concern is that online info streaming is causing single player offline modes to freeze and grind to a halt. Acknowledging these problems, Sony has announced it it to launch a Gran Turismo 5 patch this weekend. Bubble burst.

CoD: Black Ops is back in the news and for mixed reasons. Whilst on the positive front the Activision CEO has announced that online Call of Duty content will remain free, a number of PS3 Black Ops users are petitioning Activision for a full refund as the PlayStation edition of the game is considered 'inferior' to its Xbox 360 counterpart.

Upcoming tablet news is never far away and today has dished up two tasty tablet treats in the form of BlackBerry PlayBook pricing and a new Android 2.3 powered device. Whilst the BlackBerry PlayBook is expected to cost $399 at launch early next year the WooW Digital The One Tablet is to launch pre-Christmas running Google's Android Gingerbread OS. Exciting news but a truly terrible tablet name from Woow.

Future Sony products have also been hitting the headlines today as the PSP Phone announcement date leaks pointing towards a December 9th arrival, at least in verbal form if not physical. Elsewhere Sony has declared it is working on holographic and single-screen 3D multiplayer gaming, both tantalising prospects and an exciting insight in to the future of gaming.

Gran Turismo 5 patch coming Saturday to fix online issues

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 09:11 AM PST

Patch inbound for recently released Gran Turismo title

Despite going on sale for the first time yesterday, Gran Turismo 5 is to be on the receiving end of a glitch-fix patch this weekend as Sony attempts to curb faults that have plagued the game’s early adopters.

Set to be released this Saturday, November 27th, the patch will “"refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience" claimed Polyphony Digital head and Gran Turismo creator and guru Kazunori Yamauchi.

"We're going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions. It's like a living creature, dynamically growing as we speak.”

Fans who have already picked up a copy of GT5 following a five year wait riddled with delays and further postponements have reported issues with online updates causing massive delays in loading and decreased gaming power causing games to grind to a halt.

"Online updates are planned of course for leaderboards and matchmaking - [they're] all planned in the process of evolution," added Yamauchi. "The data centre was set up to handle 500,000 connections but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result.”

"The design of the GT game really integrates the online and offline parts. So the problems online actually affected the offline play as well. Right now we've changed the number of simultaneous connections that are possible to one million, doubling the number, and we're trying to gauge what will happen, but we don't know at this point in time."

Have you encountered early problems with your copies of Gran Turismo 5? Let us know what you think of the heavily delayed racing sim via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

On-demand 3D porn service to be introduced in France

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 08:22 AM PST

3D porn available as the French public please

France is to become the first European country to offer a 3D porn video on demand service as Parisian television production company Marc Dorcel announces the arrival of the extra dimensional adult content.

The subscription based service will offer more than 60 exclusive high definition 3D adult flicks from launch on French IPTV platform 3 with additional videos being added on a weekly basis to categories that include “nurses," "fetish," and "girls only”.

Marc Dorcel TV first outlined its 3D porn plans earlier this year at MipTV with the launch content having been produced in conjunction with fellow French firm 3DLized.

Whilst the thought of extra dimension adult content is enough to cause some to blush and others to faint, the adult industry has repeatedly been a pioneer in the promotion and uptake of emerging consumer technologies. With the current low adoption of 3D TV in the home and the limited availability of 3D content deterring many, this porno push could be what the 3D industry needs to get behind for wider uptake.

Does the prospect of the 3D naughty tempt you into the extra dimensional broadcast technologies? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Call of Duty online content to remain free despite rumours

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 07:36 AM PST

Activison online content to remain free to use

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has quashed rumours suggesting the games company was readying a paid-for subscription plan to charged users of its online multiplayer Call of Duty games.

Speaking out against the rumours which had Call of Duty fans across the globe in fear of the currently free to use online multiplayer offerings which are one of the main draws to many games, Hirshberg stated: “Are we going to be charging for multiplayer? The answer is no.”

“The experience you have out of the box, connecting with the online community to play Call of Duty is absolutely integral to the experience and we’ll never charge for that. It’s not going to be something we’ll attempt to monetise; it’s part of the package.”

With more than one million gamers reportedly competing online by 1am on the launch day of Call of Duty: Black Ops, this confirmation will no doubt appease gamers globally.  However, many PS3 owning Black Ops gamers are currently petitioning Activision for a full refund for what they consider an ‘inferior’ game offering to Xbox users.

Would you have continued with Call of Duty online modes had Activision implemented a paid-for subscription service? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Microsoft Kinect hack: gesture-controlled web pages

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 06:48 AM PST

Minority Report-style web controls come to Kinect

Microsoft’s Kinect has only been on sale a short time, but already it’s been hacked so you can surf the web using gesture controls, a la Minority Report.

A group at the MIT Media Lab Fluid Interfaces Group devised DepthJS, a system that lets Javascript talk to the Kinect to perform actions like navigating web pages. A demo video shows them flicking through open tabs with a move of the hand, making a fist to select. The cursor appears as a blue ball, corresponding to hand movements. Scrolling is a simple case of waving up or down, then holding your palm to the camera lets you pan around the page.

Not all that useful, admittedly, but it makes the iPad look old fashioned. And think of the prospects.

What do you think? Future of failure? Let us know viaTwitter or Facebook.

Gran Turismo 5 release marred by single player delays

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 04:47 AM PST

Online feeds hamper standard single player GT5 content

Having persevered through countless delays prior to the title’s launch yesterday, eager Gran Turismo fans are now experiencing further interruptions as large online demand is repeatedly stalling servers inadvertently affecting single player game play.

As internet connected gamers are also fed regular streams of logs, stats, and profile data from the online community whilst competing alone in single player modes, GT5 users are finding their games crawling to a halt and being hampered by heavily prolonged loading times.

Moving through the game’s numerous menus, an arduous task at the best of times, is reportedly causing internet connected users delays lasting “several minutes” as the hefty racing sim uses “the various screen displays in GT Mode" to access servers.

In an attempt to "temporarily alleviate" these issues, Sony has removed access to the in-game updatable logs and deleted a number of online gamer profiles. Alternatively, gamers could turn their backs on the online multiplayer capabilities of GT5 and disconnect their PS3 consoles from the internet to play without delay.

PS3 holographic gaming currently in the works

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:58 AM PST

3D multi-player action also on the Sony gaming radar

PS3 owners could soon embrace 'holographic' gaming after comments made by a SCEE exec suggested the company is working on the technology for its flagship console.

In an interview discussing the importance of 3D innovation, SCEE studio director Mick Hocking commented on the next potentially innovative gaming step saying, "We also have techniques like holographics for the PS3 that I think will be very interesting for the future 3D games.”

Sony were of course the first and so far the only one of the major console players to adopt 3D gaming and Hocking revealed that the company is already looking at ways of maximising its appeal:

“In regards to that we have some new technology that we’ve shown to developers that uses 3D techniques, it allows two players to play full screen multi-player games but without each being able to see the others view, and they have been massively keen on them.”

Hocking also believes there is more to 3D than just the PS3 saying, “This isn’t just about adding 3D to the PS3 – there’s a whole wave of new technologies and techniques that make use of 3D and the 3D hardware that we can use to enhance our games with in the future.”

With 3Dradar having recently reported that holographic TVs could be with us by 2017, Gran Turismo: Hologram Edition may not be that far away.

BlackBerry PlayBook release price set at just $399

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:43 AM PST

PlayBook to launch below $400 mark

Prices for RIM’s upcoming first foray into the tablet market, the BlackBerry PlayBook, have leaked online with the mooted iPad competitor pegged with a $399 price tag.

The self-proclaimed ‘underground technology network’ Mobility Insider has claimed that it has received pricing confirmation on all three models of the imminent BlackBerry PlayBook release with the 8GB capacity model set to go on sale in the US at a smidge under the $400 mark (£253).

Consumers looking ahead to the 16GB and 32GB capacity PlayBooks are expected to have to fork out $499 (£316) and $599 (£380) respectively. Although the Apple iPad starts with a 16GB offering moving up to 64GB model, prices for the current market leading tablet start at a somewhat hefty £429 in the UK.

The three BlackBerry PlayBook models will differ only in their storage capacities with each device set to come equipped with a 7-inch multitouch LCD display, 5-megapixel camera with an additional 3-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM when they launch on a yet unknown date in the second quarter of 2011.

Do you think the BlackBerry Playbook can challenge the Apple iPad with its low-end pricetag? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the RIM tabelt.

Call of Duty: Black Ops PS3 users petition 'sub-par' game

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:18 AM PST

Uneven Call of Duty: Black Ops release angers cheated PS3 users

An online petition demanding a full refund for Sony console owners disgruntled by the ‘inferior’ PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops has sparked a flurry of action amongst angered PlayStation gamers.

Requesting Call of Duty’s publishers Activision supply them with a full refund for their “sub-par” copies of the most successful game of the year, numbers of signatures on the virtual petition have topped the 2,000 mark in less than 24 hours.

“The Playstation 3 version BO was released at the same time and date as the Xbox 360 version. Technically, the Playstation 3 can equal and/or out perform the Xbox 360 on many levels. Yet, the Triple A title BO was released on the Playstation 3 with sub-par graphics, buggy software and less features.” read the petition.

It continued: “Is it fair to charge PlayStation 3 owners the same price for an inferior product, when both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 had the same amount of development time? Is it fair to charge PlayStation 3 owners the same price for an inferior product, when the previous version (Modern Warfare 2) was equal on both systems but the updated version (BO) is not? Is it fair to charge PlayStation 3 owners the same price for an inferior product, when the previous version (Modern Warfare 2 on PS3) looked visually better than BO looks now on PS3? We are requesting a full refund for Call of Duty Black Ops!"

With Xbox’s Director of Entertainment and Marketing, Stephen McGill proudly proclaiming "Obviously everyone knows the best place to play Black Ops is on Xbox 360” and industry-wide acknowledgement of increased functionality and graphical quality of the Xbox Black Ops offering, the irks highlighted by the online petition appear to have a foundation in fact.

“It is appalling a developer or a publisher would release a game on two platforms charging the same price but not offer the same game in terms of quality or functionality” stated one petitioner, Craig Ton.

Publisher Activision has yet to officially respond to the petition.

Samsung Nexus S spotted running Android 2.3

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:13 AM PST

Will it get an official airing at 6th December?

The sequel to the Google Nexus One, the Samsung Nexus S, has turned up several spy shots and videos over the past couple of weeks, taking it further from rumour to reality. Now more images have emerged from XDA Developers, who’ve had something of a hands-on to eke out more details.

Android 2.3 you say?
- See the new Nexus S pictures

While the pictures to the right are of questionable photographic merit, the handset is clearly the Nexus S. The device has a 4-inch Super AMOLED disaply with an 800×480 resolution. It’s processor is a 1GHz ArmV7 processor and it rocks a camera capable of 720p video recording.

What’s new today then? Glad you asked; we have a screen of the device running Android 2.3, otherwise known as Gingerbread. This is the next iteration of Google’s mobile platform after FroYo, and promises a completely overhauled and more polished UI.

Google’s Andy Rubin will be kicking off the ‘All Things D: Dive into Mobile’ event on December 6th, and many expect the device to be officially announced then. Stay tuned for more info as we get it.

Nintendo a no-show at CES

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:02 AM PST

No big stand for Ninty at next year's extravaganza.

Nintendo’s announcement earlier this week that it’d be making an appearance at CES for the first time in 16 years set tongues wagging. Sadly, though, it seems the Japanese gaming giant won’t be hitting the show floor.

Ninty has clarified its position via the CEA, which runs the Vegas gadget gathering, saying it would be holding meetings, but that tech insiders and hacks wouldn’t get the chance to play with the ace 3DS on a big time stand.

It’s a real shame, especially as CES’s focus has been largely on TVs and home entertainment in recent years. A Nintendo stand would certainly have livened things up.

CES kicks off in the first week of January and we’ll be there, bringing you all the tech news that matters as it happens.

Sony: expect Move shortages this Christmas

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 02:12 AM PST

Nab one now or wait well into the New Year says Sony exec.

A Sony suit has said that if you want PlayStation Move for Christmas, you’d better stump up now. It seems the motion controller is in great demand and that the Big S just can’t keep up.

In an interview, Sony’s Peter Dille, who takes care of marketing across Europe, the US and Japan, said supplies were running low. “We have a catch-up problem in all three territories that will last until January or February.” Dille also said that lots of retailers were already running low.

Dille’s words echo those of Microsoft’s Don Mattrick, who last week made similar noises about Xbox Kinect. Far be it for us to show our cynical side, but could both major gaming players be trying to push punters into shops and part with their hard-earned? After all, both have got heady targets to meet.

Have you already got a Move controller? If not, will Dille’s words make you drop everything and grab one stat? Let us know on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

PlayStation Phone: 9 December launch primed

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 01:19 AM PST

Is the much-hyped PSP phone finally round the corner?

PlayStation Phone gossip hasn’t exactly been hard to come by in recent weeks. But the latest tidbit to cross our desks here at T3 Towers has really got us het up.

An invite to a Sony event in France has been unearthed by Nowhereelse.fr, with some very telling graphics and a very specific date. The invite clearly shows the four famous PlayStation symbols, as well as a phone icon cosying up next to them. The gathering is pegged for Thursday 9 December, just two weeks away.

The mail out reads, “Pierre Perron and his team invite you to the most anticipated presentation of the past 10 years… Thursday, December 9th, at 8pm”. Perron is the boss of Sony Ericsson across the channel, so there’s no doubting this has a ring of truth to it.

The PlayStation Phone hadn’t been expected to rear its head until next February’s Mobile World Congress bash in Barcelona. Now it seems we’ll at least be getting a teaser of the next-gen Android blower this side of Christmas.

Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.

SlingPlayer Mobile lands on iPad

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 12:30 AM PST

Nab the ace looking Sling app for your iPad now.

Sling Media has finally seen its ace-looking SlingPlayer Mobile for iPad app land in the App Store, having teased us with some smart official video just a few days ago.

The add-on costs £17.99 on these shores, but before you baulk at the price, remember this will let you watch TV, catch up on your favourite shows and chow down on recorded movies wherever you happen to be, as long as you’ve got a SlingBox sitting pretty under your boobtube.

Well, not just any SlingBox. See, the app comes with a rather nasty surprise. It won’t work with the SlingBox Pro. Sling Media says this is down to Apple demanding high resolution shows only on the iPad, but it still means only the Pro-HD and Solo models will work with the app.

That’s a huge miss and one which really hampers an otherwise ace extra for Apple’s slate. Has it put you off completely? Or will you be buying the SlingPlayer iPad app regardless? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Risque Android apps to get Mature content rating

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST

Apps to be rated, All, Pre-teen, Teen and Mature

Google Android Market apps will be required to have a content rating following concerns that the store exposes children to unsuitable content.

Starting over the course of the next few weeks, Market apps will all have one of four different ratings; All, Pre-teen, Teen and Mature, initially rated by the developers themselves.

Developers of current apps will be required to add ratings in the coming weeks, with those that aren't automatically labelled as Mature. The hope is that the more risque content on the Android Market will no longer make it onto the phones of minors.

In a blog post, Google revealed that it was responding to "a top request from Android users."

Eric Chu, who works with the Android Developer Ecosystem says: "Starting in a few weeks, we will be showing content ratings for all applications on Android Market. This new capability will provide users with additional information to help them select the best applications for them."

In the past Google has been criticised, namely by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, for its somewhat laid back attitude towards vetting apps in the past, compared to Apple's total porn lockdown.

Google Chrome OS hits the skids

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 11:46 PM PST

Acer boss says "consumer launch" coming next year as Google's new OS slips.

Chatter about Google Chrome OS being pushed back into 2011 has been flying round the web all week. And now it looks like the netbook-friendly system definitely won’t get a full launch until next year.

Acer’s Jim Wong has said that while his people are working on a so-called ChromeBook, it won’t be out until 2011, when Google plans to hold its “consumer launch”. However, recent stories about the OS getting a soft launch in 2010 have gained traction, with Engadget learning that Google will release its very own ChromeBook for “friends and family” this year.

Word is that this will be built by a third party, in the same vein as the Nexus One, although it’s likely to be for devs only. Google has confirmed that it’ll be making some kind of announcement before the year is out.

So, if you were hoping to get your own ChromeBook this year, it looks like you’re bang out of luck. Unless you’re a dev that is. Gutted? Or hoping that Google has applied the brakes so it can get it right straight out of the box? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
