Blood donation app wins AppJam award

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 07:33 AM PST

UK's first AppJam took place in Dundee and the top prize for Best Overall App went to iGiveaDam, a blood donor app. This app, the judges felt, could change the way blood is donated.

The contest involved a 48-hour challenge to produce a new phone app. The winning app allows blood donors to connect via social media and reminds them when they can give blood next. In addition the app guides the user towards their closest blood donation centre and sends out general public announcements.

According to the organisers, the app has attracted interest from international firms who might publish it for overseas locations.

Thirteen teams took part in the competition to produce a winning app.

The winners are set to get the latest Nokia handsets and a year's subscription to lynda.com, an online training organisation.

Facebook for Blackberry, v1.9 released with Places

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 03:31 AM PST

Facebook Places comes to your BlackBerry with the new version

RIM and Facebook have updated their Facebook for BlackBerry mobile application.

Version 1.9.0.20 is now available on the BlackBerry App World and can be installed on all BlackBerry handsets running software 4.5 or higher.

A new feature in the updated version is Facebook Places - a location-based service somewhat like FourSquare and GoWalla. Users can check in to places within a 2-kilometre radius of their location and their friends on Facebook are able to see where they are.

Users can comment or like where people check in or tag their friends at different places. Users will be able to see a Facebook Places icon on the top bar.

Apart from this new feature, the old functions of updating your profile, poking your friends and sending messages remain. Other changes in this version include viewing your messages in a list, searching Facebook for people and places and redesign of the friends list.

In addition, while Facebook chat isn't available on this release, it is touted to arrive soon in a future version update.

Have you jumped on the Facebook Places bandwagon yet? We want to know what you think, so pop over to our Twitter and Facebook pages and tell us.

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 02:16 AM PST

The first Apple that started the Apple story heads for the auction block

Around 200 of the Apple-1 computers were made in 1976. Not many are still around today.

Christie's auction house in London though, have put up an Apple-1 for sale. According to reports, the father of all current Apple computers is expected to raise up to £150,000.

The first Apple product that was made by founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in Jobs' family's garage in 1976 was sold for £410 at the time.

These computers didn't have a monitor or a keyboard, but came with a memory of 8Kb. Bet your 1GB iPod is looking good now!

The Apple-1 will be auctioned by Christie's on 23 November. Included with the computer is its original packaging, manuals, a letter from Steve Jobs and an extra cassette interface.
