News@8pm: White iPhone 4 available and GT5 delays

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple's White iPhone 4 is here, well, sort of. A student who sourced parts to convert the standard Black hued iPhone 4 into a sparkly white edition has reportedly made himself a tidy $130,000 owing to the number of people desperate enough to lighten up their Apple handsets. In other Apple themed news today, it emerged that The Beatles will be digitally exclusive to iTunes until 2011 following yesterday's Fab Four announcement. If you have already packed your sixth gen iPod Nano with Beatles tunes and want to show it off take a look at the new Griffin Slap a case come watchstrap from you Apple PMP. Nice.

Panasonic products incoming as the big P announced that not only would it be producing Android powered mobile handsets for launch in 2011 but its 103-inch Plasma TV has been given a Full HD 3D makeover. Whilst some may think that 103-inch of 3D is a tad excessive, we think they are just selling themselves short.

GT5 delays return as the latest official launch gate for the upcoming racing sim gets kicked back in Europe. The news that no gaming fan wanted to hear after five years of waiting, Gran Turismo 5 will now launch in Europe two days later than planned on Friday November 26th. Whilst Sony's flagship title flounders, Microsoft has seen sales of the Xbox 360 soar since last week's Kinect launch, doubling numbers leaving shelves.

App Store updates today have brought us an iOS 4.2 primed version of Twitter as the micro-blogging site prepares itself for the imminent arrival of the Apple's iPhone and iPad OS update. Elsewhere on the app front, after much waiting, the Google Voice Search app has landed in the Apple App Store appeasing any chatty searchers out there.

John's Phone launch marks new era of 'anti-smartphones'

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 08:45 AM PST

John's Phone brings retor appeal to the technophobic

In a mobile market being increasingly dominated by the smartphone powerhouses such as the Apple iPhone 4 and HTC Desire HD, an apparent ‘anti smartphone’ is making waves.

Ditching the HD video recorders, mulit-megapixel cameras and app-happy fillings of the modern breed of handsets, the John’s Phone device, created by Dutch ad agency John Doe, allows users to send and receive phone calls and, well, that’s about it really.

The palm sized pocket blower, which doesn’t even offer a texting feature allows users to turn the volume of the single ringtone up and down, lock and unlock its keypad and even store a speed-dial number for each key. User’s wanting to store numbers alongside names, however, will have to resort to the old pen and paper trick, handily supplied on the rear of the handset.

Whilst this lack of features might not appeal to some, due to its lack of battery supping content, the John’s Phone boast a standby time of more than three weeks making charges via its mircoUSB port a rarity. Available unlocked priced between £60 and £68 depending on colour choice, the John’s Phone is a retro offering for the technophobic moderner.

Could the John’s Phone’s quirky charm tempt you away from your beloved smartphone? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook pages.

Panasonic 103-inch Plasma TV given Full HD 3D makeover

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 06:32 AM PST

103-inch Plasma monster adds 3D credentials

Panasonic has announced that its monster 103-inch Plasma TV first unveiled in 2006 has been given a Full HD 3D upgrade ahead of the upcoming Christmas rush.

Available to pre-order in Japan as of tomorrow, November 18th, the Full HD 3D touting 103-inch Plasma TV is set to cost around £65,000 and weigh in at a hefty 321kg with stand.

Whilst this unit is by no stretch of the imagination just another 3D TV for the home, its overly excessive nature and price tag will be sure to appear to an elite member of the population looking for the ultimate in home entertainment. Sporting a 5,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, the upgraded 103-inch Panasonic setup will require a spacious setting.

No word on UK pricing or information has yet been announced, stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Panasonic giant.

Is 103-inch too excessive for a TV? Let us know what you think to this 3D touting screen via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Gran Turismo 5 release delayed again across Europe

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 06:16 AM PST

GT5 facing new release delay

Having been handed an official global release date of November 24th late last week, the already heavily postponed arrival of Gran Turismo 5 looks set to be hit by further delays, it has been revealed.

Despite confirmed to land next Wednesday, a number of official European PlayStation sites are now displaying the release of GT5 as two days later, Friday November 26th. Both the Dutch and French PlayStation websites have been handed this prolonged arrival time with reports suggesting the rest of mainland Europe will be similarly affected.

Whilst the UK PlayStation site still has the launch of Gran Turismo 5 noted as November 24th, given the repeated delays and frequent incidents of the title being pushed back, it would surprise few if the game that has been five years and $60 million in the making remained unobtainable for a little longer.

Although no specific reason has been given for this latest delay, its short nature would suggest an issue with distribution or production and not a further update to the game’s already meticulous levels of detail.

Are you excited by the imminent arrival of Gran Turismo 5 or put off by the repeated delays to a game that now has to live up to the hype? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Twitter app gets major iOS update for iPhone and iPad

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 05:37 AM PST

Twitter becomes a little more intrusive to your iPhone's homescreen

The Twitter application has had a major update for iOS devices to incorporate push notifications for @replies, direct messages and @mentions.

Twitter v3.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch also fixes a bunch of bugs, enhances the graphics for the smaller devices' Retina Screen and also adds inline media tab for iPad which harnesses all of your saved searches.

There's also one-tap support for geo-tagging your tweets and better displayed shortened URLs. The improved app is free to download or update from the App Store now.

Now every time you're mentioned, replied to or messaged you'll recieve a notification, which for major league Twitter users could become a little incessant.

Xbox 360 sales double following Xbox Kinect launch

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 03:20 AM PST

Kinect launch sees Xbox 360 sales soar

Kinect, the controller-free motion gaming add-on from Microsoft appears to have brought a new breed of casual gamer to the Xbox 360 as sales of the console have reportedly doubled since the peripheral’s launch earlier this month.

Figures collected by MCV of the UK Chart-Track show that 360 sales have been given a massive boost in the past week following the UK arrival of Kinect last Wednesday. The recent arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops, 55 per cent of the game’s 2 million plus UK sales are Xbox, is also believed to have contributed to increased console sales.

With over a million Kinect units having already been sold across the globe, Microsoft show no signs of slowing down with CEO Steve Ballmer declaring he want to sell more than 5 million Kinect peripheral by the year’s end.

"Yesterday we announced that we have sold 1 million Kinects in the first 10 days," said Ballmer."We expect to sell five million units by the end of 2010. Kinect is a revolutionary way to play games with your body and your voice; no controllers, no headsets or wands or wires."

Sony Ericsson Anzu: more details outed

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 03:01 AM PST

Initial plans don't look good for SE's next-gen flagship.

Getting all het up about the Sony Ericsson Anzu? You know, the future X12? If you’d seen last week’s leaks, that’s understandable. All the talk was of a super bright 4.3-inch panel, with the latest Android Gingerbread software ticking along underneath.

Well, now it seems things might not be so rosy. See, Eldar Murtazin, the eminent mobile fanatic, has laid his hands on an Anzu and the news is not good. His model is currently running Android 2.1 and he says Sony Ericsson will out the device with Android 2.2 FroYo, not the next-gen Gingerbread, in the New Year.

This continues Sony Ericsson’s insistence on using old builds of Android on new devices. What’s more, the 854x480 screen is said to be no great shakes, while the processor is 800MHz rather than the 1GHz we’ve come to expect from the best Android efforts. That said, vanilla Android is said to be super zippy, although Sony Ericsson’s plans to add a custom skin could put paid to that.

The Anzu, or X12, is also said to feel a lot cheaper than the X10. But the 12 megapixel shooter with 720p video should make up for apparently cutting corners elsewhere. Tell us what you think of this all-new Android phone on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

White iPhone 4 conversion kit: Student makes $130,000

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 02:44 AM PST

But is Apple about to pounce with a lawsuit?

After the continued delay for the sought-after white iPhone 4, Apple fans can be forgiven for wanting to take matters into their own hands. Few have done so with as much gusto as 17-year-old Fei Lam, though an New York student who has made a killing selling black-to-white iPhone conversion kits.

The teen set up the website www.whiteiphone4now.com, and has managed to sell on huge numbers of conversion kits, each shifting for $300 (£188). The kits are comprised of white front plates, back plates and home buttons, plus the necessary tools required for the switch, and are made up of parts largely sourced directly from Apple’s manufacturer Foxconn.

Lam apparently has a personal contact at the controversial manufacturer, citing that he "knew a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn.” The kits thus far have earned him a reported $130,000 (£82,000).

That attention hasn’t gone unnoticed, though, as Lam has received a letter from a private investigator, claiming that "his parts are either stolen or counterfeit.” While it’s unclear whether this letter has come on behalf of Apple, the notoriously secretive company will no doubt be keen to get Lam to stop his antics soon, with white iPhone 4’s not expected to officially go on sale for some time yet.

Apple iPod Nano turns wristwatch with Griffin Slap

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 02:41 AM PST

Griffin turns new Apple iPod Nano into stylish Slap watch

Apple accessories master Griffin has announced its latest add-on offering for your iProduct in the Griffin Slap watch case for the recently released sixth generation Apple iPod Nano.

When the latest Nano incarnation was unveiled by Steve Jobs back in September, one of the first alternative uses spotted for the 1.3-inch multitouch touting PMP was as a nifty Apple branded wristwatch thanks to its square form and large screen come clock face.

Giving a distinct nod to the wrap-around Slap bracelets of the 80s, the Griffin Slap for iPod Nano will allow you to show off your Apple device whilst attached to a spring-steel band covered in a healthy dollop of coloured soft silicone to keep it protected against knocks and bangs.

Covering the Nano’s dock connector and volume controls under malleable silicone, the headphone port is left open on the Slap allowing for users to use their iPods as nature, and Apple, intended. The Slap, which can be seen in the video below, supports both 8GB and 16GB sixth generation iPod Nanos.

Set to cost £19.99 each, the Griffin Slap will be available in black and pink from Apple stores nationwide next month with the full range of blue, red, purple, orange, green and yellow models to be available via the Griffin website.

What do you think of the Griffin Slap and the current trend of iPod Nano come wristwatch accessories? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Beatles iTunes exclusive until 2011

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 02:10 AM PST

Revelation comes day after Beatles finally land on Apple's music store.

The Beatles back catalogue will be exclusive to iTunes “into 2011” according to EMI, which refused to be drawn on when rival download stores would be able to sell the works of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Speaking to All Things D, EMI’s Dylan Jones responded to being asked about a possible launch date for the likes of Amazon MP3 by saying, “That’s a question, isn’t it?” It appears EMI wants to try and build hype around future releases in the same way it’s tried (and arguably failed) with iTunes.

It means Amazon and 7Digital could be left waiting months to get hold of one of the most prized back catalogues in music. However, at the time of writing, not one Beatles song had made the UK iTunes Top 10. Perhaps Apple has overestimated just how much people want Beatles downloads, especially when the world and his wife already own most of the tracks on other formats.

Bothered by The Beatles? Or just think Apple is riding the hype machine again? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

LG Optimus One hits a million

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 01:11 AM PST

Android effort now LG's fastest selling phone ever.

The LG Optimus has already hit the one million mark, just 40 days after its initial release, making it the fastest selling phone in the Korean tech giant’s history.

The Android effort, which crams in the latest FroYo software alongside a 3.2-inch HVGA screen and a pared back 3 megapixel camera, is a bargain blower, but still came out with 4 stars when we put it through its paces.

LG is understandably chuffed, proving that loading up your phones with the up-to-date FroYo pays dividends. Sony Ericsson take note. The Koreans reckon the Optimus One can become LG’s first ten million selling handset. The fact it’s available on 120 networks worldwide suggests they won’t be far off that headline number.

Got an Optimus One? Tell us what you think of LG’s bestseller now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Panasonic Android phones incoming

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 11:48 PM PST

Google-backed blowers set to land in Japan next year before going on world tour.

Panasonic gave up selling its mobile efforts around the world in 2006, instead choosing to hunker down in its own backyard of Japan. But now Panny has announced plans for an ambitious comeback, which will see its first Android smartie hit Japanese shelves in 2011.

What’s more, the blowers won’t just be confined to Japan, with plans for a global rollout in 2012. Whether by that point HTC and Samsung will have finally sewn up the market for Android cells remains to be seen.

Speaking to Reuters, Panasonic’s Osamu Waki said, “We misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market. With the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly."

Panasonic reckons it’ll be able to shift 15 million phones a year around the world come 2015, an ambitious target compared to its 5.5 million blowers sold in Japan last year. Still, it’s great to see another tech giant realise that selling smartphones to the masses is where it’s at.

Now, what do you want from a Panasonic smartphone? Let us know your dream spec on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Official Google Voice App finally hits iPhone

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 11:32 PM PST

Free texts and cheap international calls for US users. So when do us Brits get a piece of the action?

The Official Google Voice App has finally landed on the App Store, bringing an end to over a year of controversy. The add-on was initially banned by Apple for breaching its strict guidelines, but has been allowed in following a relaxation of the rules a couple of months back.

The extra, which is already available as a web app, allows punters in the US to make bargain international calls, send free texts to US numbers and even offers voicemail transcription. It had been stopped in its tracks by Apple because it mimicked core iPhone functionality.

Push notifications will let you know when you’ve got messages and a special Direct Access Numbers feature will let users makes calls as quickly as if they were using a non-VoIP service.

The official app follows the unofficial GV add-on, which rocked up in the App Store earlier this year. Sadly, Google says this is very much a US only effort right now, with no word on when Big G fans in the wider world will get a chance to play.
