News@8pm: iPad 2 release date and Sony target Kinect Posted: 30 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Sir Richard Branson made sure his iPad magazine, Project, stole the limelight from Rupert Murdoch’s and Steve Jobs’ hyped, Daily, when it was launched as an App on iTunes late last night. Costing £1.79 an issue, it will be updated with new content right up to the date of the next edition. Moving swiftly on, the iPad 2 is due to do battle with BlackBerry’s PlayBook next Spring as their release dates will reportedly coincide. The source at China’s Economic Daily News, also added growing weight to rumours about the integration of FaceTime, a USB port and the much vaunted Retina display. Those who maybe stuck with the very lovely first-gen iPad for a while, include those who take up the offer of a free iPad with Japanese network carrier, Softbank Mobile. The snag, you take up a two-year contract.

Microsoft’s Kinect has been flying off the shelves since its launch earlier this month. So much so, that the Big M has proudly announced sales on 2.5 million, in just 25 days. And according to Don Mattrick, the grand fromage at Xbox, “we are on pace to reach our forecast of five million units sold to consumers this holiday”. None to pleased about Redmond’s spanking new toy is Sony, which has been casting aspersions over the techie fence that Kinect is ‘mostly technological problems’. Playstation Move engineer Anton Mikhailov went on to say ‘it was not up to spec'. Over to you Microsoft.
In the mobile stratosphere, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is rumoured to be having a ‘massive’ update in the New Year, only three months after its much-heralded launch. Microsoft’s engineers have been boasting that “MS took three months to do what Apple did in 3 years”. One piece of hardware not yet out of the traps, is Sony’s rumoured Playstation phone. However, in a word of warning, Nick Gibson of Games Investor Ltd said such a product ‘could do more harm than good”, continuing that he didn’t understand where and how it will fit into the Playstation family.
Here at T3.com we love the countdown to Christmas, so to celebrate, we have unveiled an AppVent calendar which boasts over £3,000 worth of the best Android apps and its all for you. Devs are no longer spreading their creative wares around Apple’s App store, and are busy making hay in Android’s burgeoning Marketplace. Hell, you can even win an HTC Desire HD if you’re feeling lucky. What’s not to love. One Android App in no need of an introduction is Angry Birds. It’s just flown past the 7 million downloads mark. Bravo!

Windows Phone 7 update to bring multitasking in January Posted: 30 Nov 2010 09:52 AM PST New features coming to Windows Phone 7 Microsoft is reportedly preparing a “massive” update to Windows Phone 7 to be made available in January with a host of new features.
Although yet to be confirmed by Microsoft, copy and paste functionality, multitasking support and turn-by-turn for the included Bing maps are all hotly tipped to appear in the forthcoming update following their omission from launch models.
Earlier this year following the October launch of the Windows Phone 7 system, Microsoft suggested that the first update for the well received mobile OS would need to be completed with the assistance of a PC rather than the standard over-the-air system hinting towards a hefty overhaul.
Official word as to an arrival date or full features has yet to arrive from Microsoft. Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Windows Phone 7 updates and let us know what features you would like to see added via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BlackBerry concept phone adds emotion reading tech Posted: 30 Nov 2010 09:03 AM PST BB concept result of RIM funded project A Research in Motion sponsored project has unveiled a groundbreaking concept design for upcoming BlackBerry handsets.
More than just a basic smartphone, the BlackBerry concept phone, dubbed the Empathy and envisioned by a project carried out by the Art Center College of Design, claims the ability to read users emotions and display the emotional states of contacts in a coloured ring bragging social map.
Despite being nothing more than an idea at present, the graphical user interface of the Empathy, seen in the video below, is not a far stretch of the imagination away with interactive social hubs and relevant, updating contact information becoming increasingly integral to smartphone users.

Infinity Blade to land on iPhone on December 9th Posted: 30 Nov 2010 07:37 AM PST Medieval multiplayer with Apple's new Game Centre There's a really good chance that Infinity Blade could be the best iPhone game ever and it's coming your way in a little over a week.
The medieval adventure game, created by Gears of War masterminds Unreal Engine, will allow you to control a knight charged with the task of ridding your castle of terrifyingly huge monsters until you reach the end-boss God King.
The game is controled through finger swipes, rather than the traditional digital D-Pad. One swipe will represent a sword swing, while putting together complex combos will do more damage. You'll also be able to upgrade your gear and weapons along the way, RPG-style.
Another big selling point for the game are the console-like graphics that left Steve Jobs 'amazed' and are likely to make full use of the iPhone 4's new Retina Screen. There'll also be some multiplayer action on Apple's new Game Centre portal.
Infinity Blade will cost £3.99 to download from the App Store on December 9th. It will be available for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS as well as third and fourth generation iPod touch devices.

Sony claim Kinect is "mostly technological problems" Posted: 30 Nov 2010 06:32 AM PST Sony takes on Kinect in pre-Christmas banter As the battle of the motion gaming peripherals heats up ahead of the Christmas rush, Sony has hit out at Microsoft branding the recently released Kinect “mostly technological problems”.
PlayStation Move engineer Anton Mikhailov went on to describe Microsoft’s controller-free motion device as “not quite up to spec” and proclaimed that a Move based Lightsaber game would be “damn better than Kinects.”
The outspoken Mikhailov was yesterday reported as claiming that Sony’s PlayStation Move peripheral can be made more accurate stating: “We can certainly update it through firmware. The real question is, do we want to? So far we haven't had any real requests from studios to improve the accuracy. There are a couple of issues here and there we can fix, but the majority the games are not even taxing it to its full accuracy."
Which motion gaming peripheral takes your fancy ahead of the Christmas period, Move or Kinect? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPad 2 release date to match BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 30 Nov 2010 04:28 AM PST iPad 2 and BB PlayBook to go head-to-head The launch of the Apple iPad 2 is to coincide with that of its RIM produced rival the BlackBerry PlayBook sources close the to company have claimed.
Reported in China’s Economic Daily News, the sources claim that anticipated arrivals of the iPad 2 and BlackBerry PlayBook will be within days of each other in April or May of next year, potentially harming sales of either or indeed both products.
In keeping with numerous other rumours on the second gen iPad, the Economic Daily News have pegged the device as hosting an iPhone 4-esq Retina Display and a much desired USB port.
Whilst Apple has yet to shed any light on expected iPad 2 release dates and what features will adorn the new tablet, an April or May launch would fit with the company’s rigorous annual product cycles.

PlayStation Phone could damage Sony, says analyst Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:00 AM PST Imminent launch not universally heralded by tech watchers. The PlayStation Phone is but days away from getting the official nod. But one analyst reckons the gaming blower’s imminent debut could spell trouble for Sony and create a raft of confusion.
Speaking to our pals at Tech Radar, Nick Gibson of Games Investor Ltd didn’t mince his words. “The PlayStation Phone concept is something of an enigma,” he said, citing recent PSP2 leaks and the fact that the PSP is still selling relatively well.
Gibson continued, “Where and how will it fit into the PlayStation family of products? While a PlayStation-branded game phone might make commercial sense to Sony Ericsson, Sony Computer Entertainment’s approach to hardware is radically different, and there are numerous scenarios where such a product could do more harm than good.”
Will the PlayStation Phone hamper efforts to release the PSP2? Or can the two live side-by-side? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Could be, as the South Korean company has just lifted the lid on the Cowon 3D – the world’s first portable media device capable of showing 3D without glasses. Heady claims, but with 1080p HD and an 800 x 480 resolution on its 4.8-inch display, this could be the PMP to rule them all.

Microsoft Xbox 360 TV service in the offing Posted: 30 Nov 2010 02:12 AM PST TV package might not land for 12 months though, say insider. Microsoft is working on a new TV service built around the Xbox 360. That’s according to sources speaking to Reuters, who say they’re close to the Big M’s negotiations with US networks about a potential Apple and Google-rivalling package.
Word is that the new service will let punters use their Xbox 360 as TV set top box, accessing cable channels across the pond for a monthly fee. There is also talk of interactive skills being brought to the party, with viewers able to chat and watch together, much in the same way movie parties currently work on the Xbox.
Packages of programmes are also said to be under development, as well as plans to sell single channels. UK users can already access Sky as long as they pay up the requisite fee to Murdoch’s men and subscribe to a particular package.
It’s been suggested by these insiders that Xbox 360 TV won’t launch for another year. But with Apple and Google hard at work on plying their own web TV offerings, Microsoft will surely want to have something primed and ready-to-go sooner than that.

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 01:09 AM PST Japan's Softbank Mobile touts bargain deal for 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G model. Orange’s iPad contract deals are undoubtedly welcome. But at £27 a month for new punters, with 2GB of data and free Wi-Fi, all after stumping up a minimum of £199, you do wonder if there’s a better deal to be had.
Step forward Softbank Mobile, the Japanese network which has just confirmed it will soon be touting the 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G for free as long as you pay the equivalent of £36 a month over two years.
Now, there’s no denying that’s attractive, what with not having to front up for the hottest gadget of 2010. But the two yearly term will end up costing Japanese punters around £864. That compares to £847 on the Orange deal.
The question is, however, would Orange be better off charging more every month and just giving away the iPad for nowt? It would certainly be a ploy that would raise awareness and ultimately make them more money.
Of course, contracts are all about spreading the cost and both of these deals work out cheaper than if you bought a 16GB 3G iPad for £529 and spent £15 a month over two years on data (that clocks in at £889). The only catch with a contract is, of course, that you can’t ditch your deal when you want and nab a spanking new next-gen iPad whenever it takes your fancy.
Contract or SIM-free? When it comes to the iPad, which do you prefer? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Project iPad magazine hits UK App Store Posted: 30 Nov 2010 12:05 AM PST New mag costs £1.79 a month and comes stacked with content. The Daily might be the iPad paper that’s got tongues wagging. But Richard Branson has ensured that he at least gets some of the iPad limelight, with his much-touted Project magazine landing in the UK App Store last night.
The new mag, which features Jeff Bridges on the cover, will cost £1.79 an issue, including “updating content”, which should make it relevant right up until the next issue hits virtual shelves.
You’ll need to download a free reader app to get going, and there’s no word on whether this will be subject to the hotly-tipped new subscription system which Apple is said to be readying for The Daily. Word is Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch will share a stage next week to unveil their plans.
For now though, you’ll have to content yourself with Project. Let us know what you think of it, and whether it can see off Apple and News Corp’s joint challenge, over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Kinect hits 2.5 million sales in 25 days Posted: 29 Nov 2010 11:46 PM PST Convenient numbers give Microsoft a handy PR boost. 2.5 million in 25 days. Sounds like a mighty convenient stat to wheel out, but Microsoft has officially said that’s just how many copies of Kinect it has now sold. The figure comes after Redmond totted up Kinects sold during last week’s annual Black Friday shopping spree in the States, but covers worldwide sales.
By comparison, Sony announced at the end of October that it had shifted one million copies of PlayStation Move in the US and 1.5 million in Europe. However, it took over a month to reach that figure, and no more numbers have been forthcoming.
The Big M has previously said it’s on target to meet is five million target for Kinect and today’s boast certainly suggests that’s the case. Microsoft’s main Xbox man, Don Mattrick, said, “With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of five million units sold to consumers this holiday.”
Mattrick said just last week that stock would be running low as Christmas approached. But you can bet Microsoft’s factories will be working overtime to ensure Sony gets a proper smackdown in the burgeoning motion control wars.
