News@8pm: iOS 4.2.1 unleashed and GT5 best price

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple fanbois have plenty to get excited about as iOS 4.2.1 is unleashed to developers, suggesting that we are not too far away from the official launch (we hope) of the iPad-centric iOS 4.2 update. Talk of the iPad 2 continues to intensify as component suppliers prepare for February 2011 shipment as Apple ramps up production of the iPad successor.

Of course, before Apple brought us its 'revolutionary' device, Archos was already well versed in the tablet-making business, and has announced that the Archos 101 10-inch Android tablet is now on sale.

In gaming news, the Call of Duty: Black Ops patch for PS3 and Xbox 360 was made available with the hope of fixing glitches that have since cropped up in the game just a week after it’s record-breaking launch. With one big game launch seemingly after the next, Gran Turismo 5 is finally set to hit the shops next week, and we’ve got a Gran Turismo 5 price comparison to make sure you get the best deal.

Smartphone manufacturers from two different ends of the spectrum have bad news to report as Nokia admits that a number of its flagship device the Nokia N8, currently suffers from a power fault that either stops the device from turning on or turning off. It's also tough times for small Israeli firm Modu the manufacturer who brought us the world’s lightest phone will have to lay off staff after struggling to attract customers with its handset that sports interchangeable 'jackets'. Hmm, I wonder why that didn't work...

Gran Turismo 5 price: Cheapest deals in the UK

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 07:00 AM PST

Gran Turismo 5 prices are wide and varied but who has the best offer?

With Gran Turismo 5 set to hit stores across the UK on Wednesday, November 24th, the pricing wars that have only just subsided following the arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops are striking back up with renewed ferocity.

Here is a breakdown of the best deals and who’s charging what for the long awaited and repeatedly delayed racing sim to end all racing sims, the 3D touting, graphical majestic GT5.

The first highstreet retailer to break rank and reveal its best GT5 offering is entertainment giant HMV which has revealed that it will be offering Gran Turismo 5 for just £4.99. Now, this sub-£5 price does come with a catch but surprisingly it isn’t too unreasonable. Gamers looking to upgrade to GT5 for under a fiver a can do so by trading in their copies of Codemasters’ F1 2010, a game now two months old.

Gamers tempted away from their trusty Xbox 360’s by Gran Turismo 5 can pick up possibly one of the best GT5 deals over at Play.com where the online retailer is offering up a budget priced bumper bundle deal. For a very reasonable £274.99, Sony console adopters can pick themselves up a PS3 Slim with a 320GB HDD and a copy of the Gran Turismo 5 Collector’s Edition. Featuring a copy of the game in Collector’s Edition packaging, this special edition comes equipped with a commemorative slip case and inlay sleeve art, a 200+ page drivers guide, five Collector’s Edition artcards, five CE ‘ChromeLine’ vehicles and an exclusive Polyphony designed dynamic theme.

Leading the online charge for the release of Gran Turismo 5 at present are retailers ShopTo.net and Blockbuster Online who are offering GT5 for £34.85 and £32.99 respectively. Blockbusters low-end price point requires users to pre-order the title ahead of Wednesday’s launch entering the voucher code XMASMEGADEAL as they do so.

Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest Gran Turismo 5 prices as and when they are revealed. Have you seen a better deal for GT5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News: Amazon bombs and Googling toilet business

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 07:00 AM PST

This week's more eccentric tech happenings, in association with Asylum.co.uk

Engineer makes a homeland security weapon at home
Sometimes you need to take matters into your own hands. Doing so normally means defending your home against intruders, but can also include taking the time to build replicas of experimental US government weapons in your garage. Prepare to be dazzled…

Goooooo Science!
At our school, academic interests were the polar opposite of popularity. We’re sure it was the same at yours, but then, we didn’t go to this school, where cheerleaders are encouraged to cheer not the sporting heroes of tomorrow, but… science. Yep: These rather attractive ladies are going mad for equations, Bunsen burners and trapped antimatter everywhere…

Track your toilet flushings
Google Maps has opened a lot of doors. Today is apparently World Toilet Day (definitely needed), and to celebrate a new service – Flush Tracker – has opened online to let you track your business as it careens through the UK’s network of sewers. Sounds odd, but you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it.

Harry Potter gets his DVDs on the cheap
Retailers are always trying to get one up on each other when it comes to slashing the big titles’ prices, but Best Buy might have missed the mark with its newest Harry Potter deal. Lucky punters will be able to get the HP Blu-Ray boxset and a Toshiba BD player for just £7… if they can prove that their name is Harry Potter, Hermione Granger or Ron Weasley. The rest of us are plum out of luck.

GT5 Fan outdoes Sony
Get a trailer right and you’ll convince even the hardest of sceptics to buy a game or watch a film, but it’s a precise art. Cue one Gran Turismo 5 fan, who’s spent hours toiling on what is probably the best fanmande game trailer ever. Watch it, and you’ll want GT5 even if GT4 stole your last girlfriend.

Mysterious Amazon package not so mysterious
It’s a simple story, this one: Man finds package on his own doorstep, man worries it’s a bomb, man calls police, policeman spots Amazon logo on package, man concedes to shopping on Amazon. It’s a parable of the modern day that further shows our species to be too stupid to deserve planetary supremacy.

…And finaly

Nerdy crimes exposed
From Darth Vader theft to stolen dinosaurs, here are the best crimes perpetrated by the type of people who probably wouldn’t last 5 minutes in prison.

Call of Duty: Black Ops patch released for PS3 and Xbox

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 03:25 AM PST

Treyarch respond to Black Ops glitches

A patch has been released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 renditions of Call of Duty: Black Ops as developer Treyarch looks to rectify a number of glitches that have marred the title’s otherwise hugely successful release.

"Xbox 360 and PS3 #CODBlackOps Updates are LIVE. Be sure to check your platform's respective Sticky post on the forums," Tweeted Treyarch community manager Josh Olin to alert Black Ops’ millions of adopters to the available fixes.

Having taken a reported $650 million in its opening five days to secure the title of the most successful game ever in terms of opening week sales, a number of Call of Duty: Black Ops users have reported issues with online leaderboards and matchmaking features.

This new patch will allow gamers to accurately track kills, deaths and assists as well as adding some new anally-accurate fine tuning of audio levels with footsteps and gunfire having come under the developer’s meticulous eye and ear.

Whilst the release patches cover only PS3 and Xbox 360 issues, Treyarch has announced updates for the Nintendo Wii version of the game will be inbound within the coming weeks. "Thank you for helping us to identify the various connectivity issues you have been experiencing," read an announcement on the CoD forums. "We have fixed many of the problems you have reported and are currently testing those fixes in anticipation of releasing an update."

Have you installed the latest patches for your copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops? Let us know if all your CoD qualms have been rectified via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nokia admits to N8 power issues

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 03:00 AM PST

Warranty covers problems says Nokia's Niklas Savander.

The Nokia N8 appears to have hit a significant problem, with a number of punters reporting that their spanking new Symbian 3 phone just won’t switch on.

Espoo has confirmed that there is an issue with the blower, but top exec Niklas Savander says that it’s only affecting a “small number” of devices and that the warranty will cover a replacement.

Savander said that, “…a limited number of Nokia N8 users are experiencing a ‘power down’ or ‘not power up’”, in a chat with official blog Nokia Conversations. Although it is limited, this isn’t ideal for Nokia. Things had finally started to go quiet after a string of top level resignations and the confirmed delay of MeeGo into 2011.

Have you had problems with your N8? How have you been treated by Nokia? Let us know now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Archos Android tablet: Archos 101 10-inch tab on sale now

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 02:57 AM PST

iPad botherer lands at highly competitive price

Archos has been making tablets in some form or another for years… even before it was cool. You’d expect that experience to shine through on the company’s latest venture, then – a 10.1-inch Android tablet jostling to compete with the iPad.

So what are we looking at? Aside form the aforementioned screen size, the Archos 101 comes running Android 2.2 out of the box (with Flash support), has Bluetooth, a chassis just 12mm thin and an HDMI output for sharing video with your TV. It comes in miniscule 8GB or 16GB flavours, although that can thankfully be bolstered via SD card.

The damage is £269.99 for the lesser model and £299.99 for the 16GB, which puts it comfortably at the low end of the current tablet cost spectrum. Given Archos’ decent reputation, don’t go thinking that this is a budget tab of the same ilk as the wholly disappointing joojoo. We’ll have a full review soon, just to be sure.

You can order yourself an Archos 101 here.

Modu hits the skids

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 02:11 AM PST

Basic blower only launched in UK this summer after lengthy development.

Remember Modu, the micro mobile that changed personalities by donning different “jackets”? Well, it seems the future’s not so rosy for the leftfield gadget, with its Israeli owner having to lay off staff, with plans for an Android phone looking distinctly unlikely to come to fruition.

Speaking to reporters, Dov Moran said, “This is not the end of Modu. We will try to raise money from other sources of capital. The company will continue to sell its products.” But with only 30 staff on board, most of whom are likely to be shown the door, it remains to be seen whether this neat smartphone alternative can truly survive.

Moran continued: “We did not manage to persuade people that Modu has great potential, and that hurts a lot. It's my failure." Sadly, Modu landed at the same time as the boom in smartphones started. Its Android plans look great, but with big players unleashing phones on a seemingly monthly basis, it was always going to be hard to compete.

Let us know what you think of Modu’s impending demise now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Portal 2 release date pushed back again

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 01:02 AM PST

Makers Valve not fussed about delay, pointing out Portal suffered a similar fate.

Portal 2 has been delayed again, with makers Valve now saying the must-have follow up will not hit shelves until the week of 18 April 2011. The game had been pegged for release on 9 February next year, having initially been slated to arrive this side of Christmas.

However, Valve clearly sees no issues with the delay. In a jovial statement, it said, “[The] two month slip not only marks the shortest delay in Valve's proud tradition of delays, it represents the approaching convergence of Valve Time and Real Time. Though this convergence spells doom for humanity, it will not affect the new Portal 2 release date."

The statement also points out that Portal missed its release date and still went on to score 30 game of the year awards. Clearly Valve has no concerns that Portal 2 will do the same.

Gutted? Or are you happy to wait for Portal 2? Let us know now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad 2: suppliers prepare for February 2011 shipments

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 12:05 AM PST

Dual cameras, faster processor and more RAM pegged for Apple tablet update.

Insiders have revealed that three component makers have been brought on board by Apple to help build the iPad 2, as Cupertino preps itself for the forthcoming release of the successor to its wildly popular tablet.

Digitimes has got the inside line, claiming that three companies, Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies, are all involved, and that Apple will be adding more suppliers in February, when it plans to ramp up shipments ahead of launch.

That date suggests the next-gen slate will land less than a year after the iPad first hit shelves in the States. The Wi-Fi only model first went on sale in April this year.

iOS 4.2.1 unleashed to devs, so when's iOS 4.2 coming?

Posted: 18 Nov 2010 11:44 PM PST

iOS 4.2 bugs said to have delayed its release.

Apple has released another version of iOS 4.2 to its devs, suggesting that final tweaks are being made ahead of a reported release next week.

iOS 4.2.1 was unleashed last night, with devs reporting that only minor tweaks had been made. iOS 4.2 has already been delayed, with suggestions of issues with the new AirPrint function, as well as reported problems when using VoIP apps.

It had been hoped that iOS 4.2 would be out on 8 November. Apple claims there has been no delay, having said initially that the iPad-centric update would only be out at some point in November.
