News@8pm: Beatles land on iTunes and Black Ops patch

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple's iTunes announcement was teased yesterday prompting a flurry of rumours and speculation. Top of the expected list was the imminent arrival of The Beatles on iTunes and for once the Apple rumours were spot on as The Beatles back catalogue appeared on iTunes ahead of the 3pm announcement. Apple eventually caught up with itself to officially announce the Beatles' iTunes arrival and end a decade-long rollercoaster ride of when will it happen.

Gaming sales success has been all the rage as of late with the top games releases showing off their weighty sums. Atop today's bragging rights list was Microsoft Kinect which has shifted 1 million units since launch. That's a lot of flailing arms. Topping Kinect, however, was Call of Duty: Black Ops which has reported 2 million UK sales in its opening five days as it announces upcoming Black Ops patch for PS3 users.

Upcoming product launches like to poke their heads out early in the tech industry with BlackBerry and Facebook both outing future product info today. Whilst RIM pitted the BlackBerry PlayBook against the Apple iPad in a war of web rendering, elsewhere Facebook has outlined its messages update with email integration toping headlines across the world.

Racing games galore in today's news as two of the game industry's biggest car titles make the headlines. Whilst this Friday's arrival of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit has been teased by a real life racing trailer featuring The Stig, next week's Gran Turismo 5 arrival has been dubbed the "biggest PS3 game of the year" by online retailer ShopTo.net.

BlackBerry PlayBook vs iPad video shows BB web power

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 08:47 AM PST

Web rendering test shows power of RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook

Despite having yet to announce an official launch date for its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, Canadian tech giant RIM has had a pop at Apple as it pits its 7-inch tablet against the market leading iPad.

In an on-video head-to-head test, RIM has showcased the website rendering capabilities of its PlayBook device compared to the Apple iPad with positive results in favour of the BlackBerry branded unit.

As well as appearing to offer superior rendering skills to the iPad, RIM has pulled out the now standard trump card over any iOS run device, its ability to display Flash video content and websites. Whilst the inclusion of Flash is without a doubt a plus and much desired addition to any internet capable tablet, RIM’s video display appears slightly petty in its display of the well publicised Apple omission.

Announced last week to be prepping for launch with a sub $500 price tag, the BlackBerry PlayBook will sport a rear 5-megapixel camera with additional 3-megapixel front-facing snapper alongside a 7-inch multi-touch LCD display, 1GH dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM.

Are you tempted away from the dominant Apple iPad based on the specs and expectations of RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook? Share your tablet thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Beatles iTunes library arrival confirmed by Apple

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 07:22 AM PST

Beatles land on iTunes at last

Having set The Beatle’s iTunes page live 20 minutes ahead of today’s 3pm announcement, Apple has confirmed that it will be adding the entire Fab Four collection to the Apple iTunes Store ending a decade long feud with record label EMI.

Offering all 13 remastered studio albums from the band that changed the world like no other, iPod owning Beatles fans will be able to get hold of copies of the band’s music from iTunes for the first time with single albums to cost £10.99 each, double albums £17.99 each and individual songs available for 99p a pop.

“We’re really excited to bring the Beatles’ music to iTunes,” said Sir Paul McCartney. “It’s fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around.”

McCartney’s words were echoed, albeit with less sincerity and enthusiasm, by fellow surviving Beatle member Ringo Star: “I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes. At last, if you want it—you can get it now—The Beatles from Liverpool to now! Peace and Love, Ringo.”

John Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono Lennon has also spoken out on the partnership that will see legendary albums such as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles [The White Album], and Abbey Road land in the iTunes store and no doubt, back in the music charts: ““In the joyful spirit of Give Peace A Chance, I think it is so appropriate that we are doing this on John’s 70th birthday year.”

“We love the Beatles and are honoured and thrilled to welcome them to iTunes,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realising a dream we’ve had since we launched iTunes ten years ago.”

Will the new digital availability of The Beatles catalogue encourage the continued success of the most influential band in history? Let us know your thoughts of the Beatles, iTunes partnership via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The Beatles appear in iTunes ahead of Apple announcement

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 06:49 AM PST

Beatles back catalogue added to iTunes library

After seven year’s of wondering when it will happen, Apple has finally added the full Beatles back catalogue to iTunes.

The Fab Four, arguably the biggest and most influential band in history have seen their full collection of albums made available through the Apple iTunes store for the first time with the long awaited arrival appearing ahead of Apple’s 3pm iTunes announcement.

Rumours and speculation was sparked yesterday when Apple unveiled a seemingly cryptic event announcement declaring: "Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget. Check back here tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes.” alongside an image of four world clocks for California, New York, London and Tokyo.

Whilst many predicted the arrival of the Beatles back catalogue, many iTunes users and industry experts will still be turning their heads to the Apple event in the hope of the announcement of live streaming or a Mac App Store, two of the other hotly rumoured inbound iTunes updates.

The Beatles albums are available to download from iTunes now with prices starting at £10.99. The full Beatles Box set collection will set wannabe downloaders back £125.

With The Beatles catalogue landing in the iTunes Store will that see John, George, Paul and Ringo shooting back to the top of the charts as a new era of music fans discover the magical delights of the infamous band from Liverpool? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google Nexus S touted by Eric Schmidt

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 03:00 AM PST

Unofficial airing for much-rumoured successor to Nexus One.

Still not sure whether the Google Nexus S is the real deal? Well how about the Big G’s Eric Schmidt busting one out in public for all to see? Because that’s exactly what the main did last night, touting the Gingerbread-packing phone at the Web 2.0 summit across the pond.

Word is the new phone has a concave design, actually getting thinner in the middle. There’s an AMOLED panel slapped on the front, with volume controls down the side and a black plastic back.

Schmidt said that Android Gingerbread would be out “in the coming weeks”, but refused to say when the Nexus S would be making an official appearance. The manufacturer’s label was covered on his prototype, although it’s an open secret that Samsung has made this Nexus One successor.

Call of Duty: Black Ops patch coming for PS3

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 02:53 AM PST

Black Ops patch coming as sales top 2 million units in the UK

Call of Duty: Black Ops might have broken all UK and global launch day records when it landed last week but many gamers have reported faults with the first person shooter, errors that developer Treyarch is set to rectify with a downloadable patch.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 edition of the Call of Duty title appears to be worst affected by the gaming glitches with a number of improvements having already been issued for the PS3 edition of the game. Latest incoming patches, however, are set to correct issues with the online leaderboard stats that were incorrectly reporting kills, deaths and assists, as well as improvements to the matchmaking and match and host selection features.

Despite the number of irks in the system, Call of Duty: Black Ops has confirmed its title as the biggest ever game launch shifting more than 2 million units in the UK in its opening five days. The figures, which came from the trade body UKIE, Black Ops has bagged publishers Activision Blizzard  £81.9 million in the UK, up 21 per cent on last year’s Call of Duty record breaker, Modern Warfare 2.

Internal Activision estimates put opening day Call of Duty: BlackOps sales in the UK and US at roughly 5.6 million units, eclipsing initial Modern Warfare 2 sales of 4.7 million copies.

HTC Legend and Dell Streak get Android 2.2 update

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 02:45 AM PST

Vodafone and Dell bring things up to speed

There’s nothing worse than signing a fat, two year contract for a phone and then watching it get neglected by either the network or the manufacturer when newer devices land. Thankfully for Dell Streak and HTC Legend owners, that pain will soon be over, as Android 2.2 will be coming to the devices imminently.

The Dell Streak, which launched sporting the now archaic Android 1.6, will be getting the update courtesy of Dell, following a string of customer complaints that the oversized device was out of touch. Dell will be rolling out the OTA update over the next few weeks.

That’s the same time frame that Vodafone has proffered for the HTC Legend’s 2.2 update. The diminutive handset has been somewhat overshadowed since launch by its bigger brother the HTC Desire, but Voda has promised that the FroYo update will begin today.

What will FroYo mean to your handset?

Gears of War Kinect on the way

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 02:38 AM PST

Hardcore Kinect games on the Microsoft agenda?

A Gears of War game compatible with Kinect is rumoured to be in the works, which would support Microsoft's intentions that the motion-sensing controller will appeal to more than just casual gamers.

IGN have been tipped off by an unnamed but 'realiable' source who claims that a Kinect-friendly Gears of War title will be unveiled at the Spike TV Video Games Awards next month, amongst other notable game announcements. There was no indication whether this would be an entirely new game or a previous title given Kinect support.

Since the tip off was revealed, Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski tweeted,"No Kinect in Gears of War 3", which could suggest if the rumours are true that it will be a brand new GOW title.

The Xbox 360 add-on, which has sold one million units in ten days, has faced some criticism over the fact that Kinect launch games have been more family-orientated.

Giving the multiplayer shooter its place amongst Kinectimals and Joyride would clearly help to ensure that Kinect has genuine hardcore gaming credentials.

Microsoft and Gears of War developers Epic Games have yet to comment on whether the game is set for release.

Olympus E-PL1S unveiled

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 02:21 AM PST

E-PL1S is world's lightest interchangeable lens camera says Olympus.

Still not jumped on the Olympus PEN bandwagon? Holding out for something even lighter? Then how about the new E-PL1S, which has just taken a bow over in Japan.

The new effort is really just a minor tweak to the already brilliant E-PL1. ISO has been pushed up to 6400 from 3200, and the battery has been changed from the E-P2 and E-PL1.

The big draw though is the fact that both frame and the new M.ZUIKO lens tip the scales at a mere 454g, making this the world’s lightest interchangeable lens camera. We’re sure the likes of Sony and Panasonic will have something to say about that in the coming months.

The E-PL1S is due to land in Japan in April next year, with no word yet on when us Brits will get a slice of the action. Stay tuned to T3.com for more news as we get it.

iTunes announcement: The Beatles are coming

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 01:11 AM PST

Beatles albums finally on way to iTunes today according to Wall Street Journal.

Cloud-based storage? A new streaming service? Today’s iTunes announcement has caused a flurry of new rumours, but it seems all are wide of the mark. Because new reports are suggesting that The Beatles’ back catalogue will finally make its way to Apple’s virtual music store.

The Wall Street Journal has spoken to “people familiar with the situation”, who say that execs from Apple met with The Beatles’ representatives and suits from EMI last week and thrashed out a deal.

Likewise, Billboard reckons the Fabs will be landing on iTunes today, citing similarities between Apple’s announcement teaser on its website and the cover of The Beatles’ album Help. The clocks on Apple’s announcement mirror the arm positions of John, Paul, George and Ringo, while the red ring can also be seen on the album artwork. Tenuous? Or great detective work? You decide.

Either way, it seems a streaming service is unlikely, with insiders claiming they’ve heard no chatter about the major deals Apple would require to get such an offering off of the ground.

If it is The Beatles, are you disappointed? Or is it about time the biggest band ever went digital? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Microsoft Xbox Kinect: one million sold

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 12:02 AM PST

Redmond reckons it's on track to smash 5 million mark by year's end.

Got Kinect yet? If so, you’re not alone. Microsoft has just come over all boastful and confirmed that it sold one million of the motion sensing cameras in just ten days. What’s more, it reckons it’s bang on track to meet its much-mooted target of five million by the end of 2010.

The announcement comes as the price for a Kinect bundle here has fallen to just £235, with Tesco leading the race to the bottom. And with the post-Thanksgiving Black Friday event set to kick off Stateside next week, expect more price cuts to push Microsoft’s effort ahead of PlayStation Move.

"This is a great start to the holiday season,” said the Big M’s Don Mattrick. “We will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5 million Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year."

It seems nothing can stop the controller-free package. Sony’s Move managed 1.5 million in its first month in Europe and a million in the States. The question is, can it go toe-to-toe with Kinect and come out on top? All will be revealed after Christmas.

Got Kinect? Tell us how you’re getting on with it on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Facebook Messages update detailed

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 11:48 PM PST

Text, Chat and Email all set to land in one unified Facebook inbox.

Facebook’s much-hyped email service is here. But it’s most definitely not the epic Gmail rival that some tech fanatics were hoping for. In fact, it’s more of a reboot of the entire Messages offering on the social network, allowing you to access Chat, Email and text messages all in one place.

At the heart of the changes is what Facebook calls ‘The Social Inbox’. This means only messages from your friends, and their friends, will show in your main mailbox. Spam, or mail from people who aren’t on Facebook, will land in the ‘other’ mailbox. However, these can easily be moved to your main folder and you can tweak settings to allow as many or as few important messages through into your central inbox.

There’ll be full conversation history access, so you can see all of your messages with one friend, or a group, in one place, whether they’re emails, texts and IMs. And best of all, messages don’t just have to come from the Facebook service, so your pals who aren’t on board can still get hold of you easily.

And while all Facebook users will be able to get an @facebook.com email address, Zuckerberg and co are keen to emphasise this isn’t your standard email offering. There’ll be no cc or bcc functions and you’ll be able to send messages by simply hitting enter. Rather, this is a way of bringing together all types of messaging in one place and not prioritising one over the other.

The service is due to begin rolling out ‘in the next few months’, and while you won’t be able to plugin mail clients owing to a lack of IMAP support, Facebook says it will eventually play nice with the likes of Mail and Outlook.

Excited? Disappointed? Let us know what you think of Facebook’s new email package on Twitter and, of course, on Facebook now.
