CoD: Black Ops release ups and downs have made the news today as the latest addition to the war time gaming franchise sees a mixed start to its life in the hands of avid gamers. Which developers Treyarch are reporting more than 1 million Black Ops gamers were competing online just hours after launch, numerous reports have suggested glitches and faults have affect the PC edition of the Call of Duty title. Well, you can't expect a perfect batting average.

Tablet launches loom ever closer as for the second day in a row key information has surfaced around RIM's upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Today's news saw the BB tablet priced as the RIM CEO declared the BlackBerry PlayBook will cost "under $500". Lovely. Joining the PlayBook in the headline was the Samsung Galaxy Tab sporting a 7-inch Super-AMOLED display in an exciting prelude to the next generation release.

Windows Phone 7 expected to take the world by storm when it launched last month. Whilst we at T3 are of the opinion that this is one great mobile operating system, consumers appear less convinced as reports suggest just 40,000 Windows Phone 7 handsets were sold at launch. This disappointing revelation is slightly bolstered by the news that the Slingbox Mobile app is now available on the Microsoft OS.

Sh*t My Dad Says Twitter page hacked by spammers

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 08:02 AM PST

Comedy Twitter page hit by hack attack

Sh*t My Dad Says, one of the most famous and followed Twitter accounts has been hacked with the anthology of one man’s notorious one-liners being abused to try hawk low-end laptops.

With more than 1.8 million followers the Sh*t My Dad Says account is the latest in a number of high-profile Twitter accounts to be targeted by hackers for their immense followings and directed advertising potential. The hacker posted the message "wow I just got a free dell laptop LOL" directing followers by a shortened link to a make-money-fast website.

With a book and a spin off televised sitcom starring William Shatner having come for the Twitter phenomenon, the feeds founder Justin Halpern was forced to respond to the attack tweeting: “Sorry, shit my dad says got hacked. My dad isn't trying to sell you a crappy lap top, I promise. Don't open any links.” The imposing message has since been removed.

"Of course it's serious when such a popular Twitter account has its security breached. In theory, malicious hackers could have posted a link to malware or a phishing site - rather than just what appears to be a more traditional spam page," said Graham Cluely, a Senior Technology Consultant at security firm Sophos.

"It's unclear on this occasion whether the Twitter password was phished, whether it was cracked through a dictionary attack or spyware, or whether the person behind "Sh*tMyDadSays" made the mistake of using the same password on multiple websites.

Slingbox Mobile Windows Phone 7 app available now

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 06:58 AM PST

£22.99 app allows Slingbox owners to go mobile

if you're Microsoft, news that Windows Phone 7 only shipped 40,000 handsets on launch day in the US has to be a bit alarming, but at least the big name apps keep on coming.

Today's new release is Slingbox Mobile, which brings an entirely new WinMo specific interface for the market-leading TV-anywhere service, which allows users to watch television from portable devices over the internet.

The app also enables WP7 owners to control their Slingbox DVRs from anywhere in WiFi and 3G range, and also change channels. The app is also available for iPhone, Android, Symbian, Palm and BlackBerry.

The big question is, with only 40,000 Windows Phone handsets sold so far stateside, how many of those folks own Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox HD set-top boxes? and how many are willing to pay £22.99 for the Slingbox app?

Call of Duty: Black Ops online multiplayer tops 1million users

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 06:52 AM PST

CoD: Black Ops well on way to becoming the biggest game of the year

Call of Duty: Black Ops, the biggest game release of the year recorded 1 million online gamers just hours after its global launch a representative of developer Treyarch has revealed.

“Am I getting solid intel? Is there really almost 1,000,000 players on Xbox LIVE right now?? #CODBlackOps #Launch”. tweeted Trayarch Community Manager Josh Olin at 1am Pacific Standard Time (9am GMT) on Tuesday.

Whilst exact sales figures for the game’s release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC have yet to be revealed, the staggering number of consecutive online gameplay just hours after launch is hugely impressive. The figures also suggest the rise in online multiplayer gaming is helping to push the CoD franchise forward from its already exceptionally strong single player campaign foundations.

Thousands of retailers across the globe opened their doors as the clocks turned to midnight on Tuesday so eager gamers could get their mitts on Black Ops at the first available opportunity. Expected to gross well over £1 billion, it is believed Call of Duty: Black Ops will eclipse the likes of FIFA 11 and Halo: Reach to become the biggest game release of the year.

Bang and Olufsen Beosound 8 iPad dock

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 05:24 AM PST

The best-looking iPad dock yet to hit the shelves

The Bang and Olufsen Beosound 8 is one of the sexiest speaker docks we’ve seen in a long time, and considering it fits the iPad too, it looks like the best thing to happen to your Apple device since Angry Birds.

The cone shaped speakers of the Bang and Olufsen Beousound 8 make it appear to float above the table, though you can place it on a wall bracket if you prefer. And it comes in black and white, with a choice of different coloured speaker covers.

A manual room adaption switch lets you tweak the settings to suit where you’ve placed it, so you don’t have to worry if you want to fill a large lounge or a titchy kitchen. If you don’t own an iPad or iPhone you can hook up a different MP3 player or your PC or Mac, and it’s set up for networking using Apple Airport Express, so you can stream straight to it from your computer.

The only downside looks to be the price – a cool £895, when it goes on sale later this month. Ouch.

What do you reckon? Is it topping your Christmas list? Let us know via Facebook and Twitter.

Call of Duty: Black Ops lag issues strike PC users

Call of Duty: Black Ops has rocketed to success with more than 5 million people registered to play it online, according to Activision insiders.

However, PC players of Call of Duty: Black Ops have reported running into intermittent lag issues in the game's multiplayer modes.

The Treyarch Studio has acknowledged the problem, with multiplayer design director David Vonderhaar Tweeting: "I don't have any intel at this time. I am not in the office but I know they know about it."

Twitter user @xfire commented: “Gah. Fed up with COD black ops and it's performance on PC. Guess it's time to start waiting for a patch...”

iOS 4.2 launch expected on November 12th

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 03:44 AM PST

Latest OS update for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch to arrive this week?

Apple's iOS 4.2 operating system update is expected to launch on Friday a day after the Gingerbread OS update for Android smartphones is expected to land.

An unnamed source from US network provider AT&T revealed to MacStories that the latest iOS update would be available on Friday 12th November 10AM PST which in UK time is around 6pm.

The same source also leaked details of today's Mac OS X 10.6.5 launch, and claims the iOS 4.2 OS GM update was supposed to be with developers from October 26th.

Further evidence to support an imminent launch arrived yesterday courtesy of an email sent by Apple to iOS developers stating that, ‘iOS 4.2 will soon be in the hands of millions of customers’.

The iPad is set to benefit most from the iOS 4.2 bringing all the new features of iOS 4.1, allowing wireless printing so you can print from apps, and possible internet tethering which was spotted in a beta version of iOS 4.2.

John Bramley, an iPad app developer shared his views with T3 on iOS 4.2 saying, "My initial thoughts on iOS 4.2 on iPad are that it's a big improvement - loving the ability (as with iPhone) to have multiple apps within folders and the new mail seems smooth".

Good news for Apple smartphone owners is that iOS 4.2 is also expected to ship with a fix for the alarm bug that recently affected iPhone users across Europe. So you can't use that excuse anymore...

Tron: Legacy new trailer and the gadgets that go with it

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 03:38 AM PST

As well as film-related gadgets you can buy

A new Tron: Legacy trailer has just surfaced online, and while it takes a while to get going, when it does kick off it looks phenomenal.

There’s also a host of gadgets to coincide with the December the 17th launch. If you want to watch the film in style, the Oakley Tron Limited Edition 3D Gascan glasses should suffice, with graphics from the film down the side. The lenses are curved, maximising your field of vision, and a three point fit means they’re nicely balanced, alleviating stress on pressure points. The Oakley Tron Limited Edition 3D Gascan glasses are £115 available online, from the Oakley Store in Covent Garden, London, or the Sunglass Hut flagships on Oxford Street and in Covent Garden.

Or how about a trio of games controllers? PDP Collector's Edition Tron controllers are available for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360, with the lighting imitating that seen in Tron: Legacy. They all ship this month and cost $50.

Finally, the Razer Tron: Legacy mouse leaves a light trail behind it when used with the mouse pad, just like the bikes in the movie. It’s $50 from Razer.

Will you be watching Tron: Legacy on December 17th? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter.

Windows Phone 7: Only 40,000 sold at launch?

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 03:21 AM PST

Market research claims WP7 hasn't made big impact across the pond.

Windows Phone 7 finally hit US shelves on Monday, but it seems things didn’t quite go to plan for Microsoft. The Street reports that a market research source, specialising in tracking phone sales, is saying only 40,000 handsets were sold on day one.

Being from market research, this number should be taken with a truckload of salt, but it will no doubt create plenty of cause for concern at Redmond. Analysts are already claiming that Microsoft is offering too many phones at launch, confusing potential buyers.

Still, when you compare this meagre figure to Apple’s 1.5 million iPhone 4 sales on its first day and Android’s 200,000 daily activations, you get an idea of the mountain Microsoft needs to climb.

However, with Christmas looming and big sales in US stores forthcoming, Microsoft should be able to get itself back on track, say insiders. Whether it can eke out a position from which it can bring down the might of Google and Apple, however, remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab update to get Super-AMOLED display

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 02:54 AM PST

Samsung set to bolster tablet offering

The Samsung Galaxy Tab might only have hit UK stores last week but that hasn’t slowed Sammy down as the Korean company displayed its 7-inch tablet sporting a Super-AMOLED display today.

Rumoured last week the 1200 x 600p resolution display has been demoed at the FPD International Expo in Tokyo trumping the current 1024 x 600p TFT-LCD offering.

The arrival of the Super-AMOLED display on the Android 2.2, 1GHz processor powered Samsung Galaxy Tab further reinforces rumours of an updated model of the dual-camera boasting tablet coming early in 2011.

Also on display from Samsung at the FPD International Expo is the heavily rumoured 10.1-inch edition of the company’s iPad challenger. Sporting an enlarged edition of the current LCD display the iPad-esq sized tablet sets up an exciting battle for tablet supremacy in 2011 alongside the expected Apple iPad 2 and the soon to launch BlackBerry PlayBook from Rim.

What features would you like to see added to the second generating Samsung Galaxy Tab? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Galaxy Tab updates.

BlackBerry PlayBook slapped with price tag

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 02:13 AM PST

Main man promises "very competitively priced" slate when it lands early next year.

Can’t wait till February to get your hands on a BlackBerry PlayBook? We feel your pain. But RIM’s Co-CEO Jim Ballsillie has some good news. The main man says the iPad-battler will come in under $500 when it hits Stateside shelves.

Whether that really translates to £312 on these shores remains to be seen. But Ballsillie says the slate will be “very competitively priced,” essentially code for wanting to match or undercut the most affordable iPad at any cost. The 16GB version of Apple’s tablet currently costs $499 across the pond, although this is expected to drop when the iPad 2 lands early next year.

Of course, RIM doesn’t only have Apple to think about. There’s Samsung’s recently unleashed Galaxy Tab, plus a slew of new machines set to get an airing at CES next January. That means it’ll need to drive costs down in order to get sales flying.

Will you be buying a BlackBerry PlayBook? Or are you waiting to see just what Steve Jobs has in store for the iPad 2? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Palm Pre 2 landing in UK this Friday

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 01:07 AM PST

No word on SIM-free pricing, while network support remains MIA.

The Palm Pre 2 will go on sale SIM-free here in Blighty this Friday, HP has confirmed. Currently, only French phone fanciers can play nice with the world’s first webOS 2.0 phone, with a yet-to-be-dated US release also planned.

Sadly, HP hasn’t been forthcoming on how much the handset will cost. But with no networks yet to jump on the Pre 2 bandwagon, it looks like this is a phone you’ll need to pay a premium for if you want to get involved.

For those lagging behind, the Pre 2 is loaded up with webOS 2.0, alongside a 1GHz processor, a touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keyboard, with a 5 megapixel camera round the back.

Will you be buying a Pre 2 direct from HP? Or will you be holding out for a network to flog it and help spread the financial burden? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Xbox Kinect UK release today

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 11:58 PM PST

Nab yourself Kinect now and be sure to tell us what you think of Microsoft's revolutionary new system.

Almost 18 months after it first reared its head at E3 2009 as Project Natal, Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360 has finally gone on sale here in the UK. The new motion-sensing camera has been the centre of intense hype, but now, finally, you can get involved and see what gaming minus a hulking great controller really feels like.

- Win Kinect, an Xbox 360 and Sonic Free Riders game: Click here

The camera itself will set you back around £130 with Kinect Adventures thrown in. If you’ve not got an Xbox 360 already, you can nab a Kinect bundle for £250. There are 19 games being released for Kinect this month, although just getting to grips with using your paws to control games should really be your number one priority.

Whether Kinect can see off the intense competition from PlayStation Move remains to be seen. Only yesterday, US retailer Gamestop claimed that Microsoft would beat down Sony in the run up to Christmas. The Big M has said it hopes to shift five million units before the big day.

Are you buying Kinect today? Or are you eagerly awaiting delivery? Let us know all your musings on Microsoft’s awesome new effort on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

AirPrint for Mac and PC hits the skids?

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 11:31 PM PST

"Indefinite" delay for AirPrint support on Mac and PC.

Steve Jobs practically wet himself when he touted Apple’s admittedly slick AirPrint function back at the unveiling of iOS 4.2 in September. But now it seems support for the breezy tech will not stretch to shared printers on a Mac and PC.

So what? Well, that means the hyped-up feature will most likely only work directly with five HP printers which can play nice with AirPrint. That means it falls well short of the revolutionary status Apple had been gearing up it up for, where you could print to any machine via your Mac or PC.

AppleInsider has confirmed that the final version of iOS 4.2, due out this Friday, contains no reference to AirPrint working with either Mac or PC. Release notes state, “iOS 4.2 devices can print wirelessly only to printers that support AirPrint and are running the latest available firmware." Previously, Apple had made a point of stating its support for Mac and PC, with Phil Schiller even talking up its prospects.

What’s more, one Apple dev has taken to Cupertino’s official discussion boards to claim Apple Tech support told him, “Support for AirPrint for Windows and Mac has been cancelled.” If this really is the case, it puts paid to one of the headline features of iOS 4.2 and truly limits its ability to become a go to feature for millions of iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users. Who really wants to buy a new HP printer just to use it?

We’ll know more once iOS 4.2 busts out later this week. In the meantime, tell us what you think of the AirPrint debacle on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
